ADVENT Beginning the Church’s liturgical year, Advent (from, “ad-venire” in Latin or “to come to, arrive”) is the season encompassing the four Sundays and weekdays leading up to the celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord at Christmas. The Advent Season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24 focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of Our Lord. Advent devotions including the Advent wreath, daily devotionals, Lessons and Carols, or services based on the Seven O Antiphons remind us of the meaning of the season. 5 th ANNUAL DURYEA CHRISTMAS STROLL Join us once again for our 5 th Annual Christmas Stroll down Main Street! Help us kick off the season with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and our local businesses and institutions, all on Main Street. An evening of fun is promised with shopping, kids’ activities, and plenty of Christmas treats! There will be live animals, horse-drawn carriage rides, prizes, baskets, and much more! Nativity of Our Lord Senior Choir will be singing on the Main Street, with Holy Rosary School providing a living nativity, and members of our Word Team will be handing out treats and things, all in a space provided through the kindness of Joanne and Karen Orlowski. Come join in the Christmas fun and support our local community. SATURDAY TRAFFIC CHANGES NEXT WEEK – Attention 4:00 pm Mass attendees: On Saturday, December 7, Main Street Duryea will be closed from Swetland Street to Lackawanna Avenue, and Stephenson Street will be closed from the tracks to approximately the Community Park, from after 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm in conjunction with the Christmas Stroll, for the safety of all involved. Questions for personal reflection based on this Sunday’s readings…

Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.

Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." ~Matthew 24:42-44

What am I doing that I would not want seen in the light of day, or at an hour I do not expect?

What do I need to do to change this?

Our annual TREE OF HOPE outreach is under way. Coordinated by our parish Women’s Society, this program helps those who for whatever reason might find nothing under their tree or in their stocking. At times you will see a gift card requested, as quite a few recipients use these cards to pay for pharmacy bills or groceries. Simply take a tag, and as you do your Christmas shopping, return the item wrapped with the tag attached and place in the totes in the vestibule of the church, or drop off at the rectory – Please have Items in by December 15. .

RELIGIOUS ED NEWS AND NOTES There are NO CCD classes today (Sunday). CCD classes for grades K-7 will resume next Sunday at 9:45 am with grade 8 meeting at 5:15 pm.

The FIRST FRIDAY of the month occurs this week. Home visits with Holy Communion will be made as the schedule allows. Telephone calls will be made to set up times for the visit.

HOLY HOUR IN ANTICIPATION OF OUR PARISH FEAST DAY

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 17, at 6:30 pm when our parish will gather for a Taizé inspired service on the Seven O Antiphons of Advent, verses that focus our attention on the Glory of Christ, who is born to us at Christmas. Most parishes celebrate their feast day, but few overlap with the great festival of Christmas. Take an hour off from your Christmas rush to reflect on all that we are given through this feast, and through the Savior it honors.

PARISH CHRISTMAS COOKIE SALE before and after all the Masses on Saturday, December 14, and Sunday, December 15, in the RECTORY. Homemade cookies of all varieties will be available for purchase right in time for the Christmas holidays. We ask the bakers of our parish to contribute by baking some of their favorite cookies and sharing them with us. If you are able and willing to do this, please contact Lois Hanczyc at 570-457-2482 or 570-313-8188.

CHRISTMAS BREAKFAST NEXT WEEK - Our parish Men’s Society invites you to their 5th Annual Christmas Breakfast on Sunday, December 8th, 8:30AM to 12:30PM at Sacred Heart Hall, Featuring: scrambled eggs, pancakes, keilbasa, ham, homefries, juice, coffee & danish. CEMETERY NOTES We kindly ask that no permanent winter decorations be left at the graves of your loved ones for safety reasons. Christmas decorations may be in placed from now and left until January 15 to accommodate the Epiphany, and those following Eastern calendars. After that, decorations will slowly be removed and discarded as weather permits, according to cemetery regulations. Spikes, wire stems from flowers, etc., can be dangerous if dislodged by weather conditions, particularly when the need for digging a grave under a blanket of heavy snow arises. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

MEMORIAL TREE Remember your loved ones in a most special way this year by offering an ornament in their name. Our tree will be displayed near the Mission Crucifix shrine, in order to allow family members an opportunity to privately view their treasured ornaments and offer a special prayer.

IN THE COMMUNITY GIVING TUESDAY This year for the first time, Catholic Social Services is participating in Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving, having accepted a challenge from AllOne Foundation & Charities in Wilkes-Barre. Because CSS received grant funding from AllOne this year, the organization has been invited to join its Giving Tuesday leaderboard of worthy causes. We’ll be raising small and large donations from the day before Thanksgiving until the day after Giving Tuesday, so from Wednesday, November 27, until Wednesday, December 4. We’re not only trying to raise $1,000 but trying to raise the most money and the most individual donors so we can receive additional funds from All One for the important work of CSS. This year’s cause is local hunger, and the beneficiaries of all funds raised will be the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen and all CSS food pantries. Our hope is that enough money will be raised so that pantry shelves will never be empty again, as they were earlier this year for a brief period. As part of the “fun-raising”/fundraising, we’re trying a TacoGivingTuesday theme and selling socially conscious taco T-shirts to raise money for the campaign now. The more shirts we sell before Giving Tuesday closes, the more matched funding we’ll get from AllOne.

A COOKIE WALK will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 215 Lackawanna Avenue in Dupont, on Saturday, December 7, from 3:30-5:30 pm and on Sunday, December 8, from 9:00 am-12:00 pm in the church hall. This is a great way to add some delicious homemade goodies to your Christmas table. A large variety of homemade cookies, candies and fudge will be available at a cost of $8 per pound.
