Dear Friends,

FROM THE PRESIDENT

My first year as Nativity Prep’s president was full of daily joys, inspirations, lessons learned and grace-filled moments. Greeting students at the front door with a handshake each morning, welcoming young alumni as they return to Nativity to meet with our Graduate Support team, following our graduates’ journeys from high school to college to career - through all of this, I’ve had a privileged view of the transformative power of a Nativity education.

That transformative education, and the lifelong opportunity and support that comes with it, is made possible entirely through your generosity. By making a gift to Nativity, you have invested in the future of incredible young men from low-income Boston families and shown them that you believe in their potential. On behalf of the entire Nativity Prep community, thank you.

Thanks to your support, there is something even deeper going on here at Nativity, which we would call the “magis” in Ignatian terms. Your gift and investment in Nativity not only transform a young man’s life, but will have an impact on his family, his community, his workplace and our city. In many ways, Nativity Prep - symbolized by the shining Nativity star - is Lighting the Way in Boston.

Our city of Boston has seen exciting and unprecedented growth over the past decade, yet not everyone has been able to share in those opportunities. We have also seen rising income inequality, a lack of quality and free education options and a dearth of workplace

diversity. Nativity Prep is providing opportunity to marginalized communities through a tuition-free, private education that forms “men for others”. For nearly 30 years it has been an educator of young men of color, a leader at providing top high schools and colleges with student diversity, an innovator at improving college persistence, and a key supporter of alumni as they pursue professional careers in Boston’s private, public and non-profit sectors. Thanks to your partnership, we are grateful to be able to deepen our service and broaden our impact.

Inside, you will find many exciting and inspiring examples of how Nativity Prep, our alumni, and you are Lighting the Way in Boston. Thank you for being a part of the Nativity family and for your continued support of our mission.

Gratefully,

Brian P. Maher President

If anyone could trailblaze in a new environment, it would be the always personable and conversational Ramsey Martinez. Ramsey is the first Nativity alumnus to attend Dexter Southfield School thanks to his own academic achievement and the Graduate Support program’s efforts to increase opportunities for graduating 8th graders.

Nativity accepted me for who I am, showed me that I am not alone, formed me into a man for others and taught me how to ‘set the world on fire.’ I’m so thankful for all of the people who were a part of my Nativity narrative.

When he’s not working hard at his dual Bachelors degree in Arts and in Engineering at Dartmouth, Quang is busy being a “man for others” by volunteering as a mentor to low-income high school students in the Hanover, NH region.

The most important lessons I carry with me from Nativity are not about Pythagoras’ theorem, but how firm a handshake should truly be, what it means to be a person for others, what it means to be a professional in the workplace, and what it means to do work you are proud of. Above all, in good times and in bad, Nativity has taught me to always put God first, ad maiorem dei gloriam.

Alumni have and continue to serve as Nativity Teaching Fellows, Board Trustees, Evening Study tutors and Alumni Council members, sharing their own Nativity experience with current students.

Alex’s own Nativity experience led him to want to support the next generation of Nativity young men as a Teaching Fellow, as he taught and coached soccer and basketball. When the Assistant Director of Graduate Support position opened up, Alex was the perfect candidate to guide Nativity’s 8th graders through high school applications and to support Nativity “men for others” in high school.

A lot of the Nativity men who graduated before me came back and taught and were big influences on me. Learning in college about the state of our educational system, I felt the need to try to impact the community I came from in a positive way, and the first place I thought of was Nativity and the way it had done that for me.

After finding the power of community at Nativity, Anthony has become deeply involved in building communities and serving others wherever he is. A Gates Millennium Scholar at Boston College, he won the Alfred Feliciano & Valerie Lewis Award for service to the BC minority community, is the president of the Cape Verdean Student Association, and is a group leader on BC’s Campus Ministry Magis Sevice Immersion trip to Jamaica.

Despite all the preparation and opportunities while at Nativity, the school has become an even greater resource since I have left, supporting me academically, emotionally, socially, and financially. How many people can say that for their middle school?

LIGHTING THE WAY

IN STUDENT FORMATION

Forming “Men for Others” for Boston2018 Alumni HighlightsFollowing the mission of Jesuit schools set by Fr. Perdo Arrupe, SJ, Nativity’s culture forms students into “men for others” who seek to serve and support in all contexts - their families, communities, workplaces and more. The 360+ Nativity alumni “men for others” are all “Lighting the Way” in Boston in their own way.

Today our prime educational objective must be to form men-and-women-for-others; men and women who will live not for themselves but for God and his Christ...men and women who cannot even conceive of love of God which does not include love for the least of their neighbors, men and women completely convinced that love of God which does not issue in justice for others is a farce.

In college, Danielson matched an interest in politics with a passion for service that had been nurtured at Nativity. As Boston’s Chief Diversity Officer, Danielson continues to make Nativity proud by working on many of the issues the school was founded to address.

Nativity laid my foundation. My love for service was born from the realization of what those services did for me and the impact those educators had in my life.

LIGHTING THE WAY

ON TEACHER TRAINING

Training the Next Generation of Skilled, Ignatian EducatorsTeaching Fellows ProgramNativity Prep’s Teaching Fellows Program has formed and trained dozens of passionate teachers, administrators and education policymakers. Thanks to the generosity of our benefactors, Nativity is able to provide a two-year apprenticeship with direct teaching experience, professional development, housing and a stipend that launch education careers serving low-income communities.

MEREDITH SMITHDirector of Student Support Services, Nativity Rochester Boston College (‘16) Boston College Lynch School of Education (G‘18)

Guided by a love of service and Jesuit education from her experience at Boston College, Meredith served Nativity as a Teaching Fellow and coordinated the school’s extensive community service opportunities. She is now putting her Teaching Fellow experience into action as Director of Student Support Services at Nativity Rochester.

The Teaching Fellows Program allowed me not only the opportunity to pursue post-graduate service and a graduate degree at the Lynch School, but more importantly the ability to understand and find a passion for urban education. I entered the program with the intention of later pursuing work in policy, but instead found myself driven to continue working “on the ground” with students and families at Nativity Rochester due to the incredible community and family I found at Nativity Boston.

From starting at Nativity knowing little English to now managing marketing for a tech product used by 6 million clinicians, Joel has always expressed his gratitude to the place where he got his start by being involved. Joel now serves on the newly formed Alumni Council.

I grew up in the Dominican Republic and had only been in the US for two years prior to starting at Nativity. The four years I spent at Nativity taught me to identify my limits and to push past them; to never settle for mediocrity; to be self-aware. I credit Nativity for instilling in me the confidence I needed to then apply to Roxbury Latin and continue to pursue my goals long after graduation.

LIGHTING THE WAYON COMMUNITY BUILDING

A “Community for Others”Coming Together to Serve TogetherAt Nativity Prep, the spirit of transformation is not confined to our students and alumni alone. The Nativity spirit of service, excellence and love is shaped by - and shapes - all who take part in the life of the school. At a time of polarization and echo chambers, Nativity brings together volunteers of all types, supporters from diverse communities, staff and faculty from a variety of backgrounds, families from all walks of Boston neighborhoods, and religious and lay allies from many creeds and charisms all for our common mission.

Now an Associate at TCW Direct Lending, Hudson often shares how the character, discipline and call to be his “best self” at Nativity stuck with him at each stage of his education and career. Never forgetting his roots, Hudson now offers an important alumni perspective on Nativity’s Board of Trustees.

Nativity is a place where high expectations are placed on every student, and where students are provided the means to meet those expectations. Simply hoping for the best for our students is not what happens here at Nativity. The community expects great things out of their graduates, and we support one another to ensure our success.

Welbis’ mother enrolled him at Nativity when she heard that it was a “really hard private school with shirt and ties”. As Welbis describes it, she could never have imagined that a middle school would go on to encourage and support him at Noble and Greenough, Boston College and the trading floor of Wellington Management.

Although my parents are some of the hardest working immigrants on the planet, never in a million years could they have predicted that me going to a small Jesuit school in Jamaica Plain would have such a major impact on my future. How many people can say that about their middle school?

Nativity Prep not only sets up young men for professional success, but often forms them in a sense of mission and the importance of educational justice. Lilu fully embodies that mission today in his work as Chief Diversity Officer of Lesley University.

Of all of my educational experiences, Nativity has probably had the most profound impact on me. I gained a lot of skills and learned in a space that was culturally affirming of my identities as a young man of color with a cultural heritage from outside of the US. While my Nativity experience was over 20 years ago, it guides my work with young people and communities of color. Nativity and higher education have a similar mission of providing equity, access to education, and successful outcomes in an environment that allows all students to participate

and thrive as their full authentic selves.

Nativity gave Claudio the platform he deserved to aim high in his education and profession. From Roxbury Latin to Duke to UMass Medical School, Claudio now serves Boston through his own pediatric practice.

Nativity formed the basis for my academic career, turning from an undisciplined C and D student in the Boston Public School system to a focused, regimented student. I became aware of what I was capable of, and accepted nothing less from myself. It guided me to apply to Roxbury Latin, which opened doors for my future success. The impact it made on my life compared to my peers at the time can’t be overstated.

The Mission

Nativity Preparatory School is an accredited, tuition-free, Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston.

Staffed by experienced teachers and dedicated volunteers who work closely with families, the school prepares students for success in high school

and college. Nativity’s academically challenging and highly structured environment helps students grow in a love for learning and an abiding sense

of responsibility to their community. In the Jesuit tradition, the school promotes the intellectual, spiritual, social and physical growth that inspires

boys from Boston to become men for others.
