Significant parcels of State Government land within and adjoining the City of Burnside 57 Cleland Conservation Park 54 Mount Osmond Reserve 27 Ferguson Conservation Park 21 Horsnell Gully Conservation Park 90 Greenhill Recreation Park NATIVE PLANT & ANIMAL SITES Many of Burnside’s native plants and animals still survive, but the natural woodlands and grasslands that once supported them have almost been lost (see small map showing original distribution of woodland types in the Burnside area). By looking after the indigenous plants of Burnside we are providing food and shelter for wildlife, including small birds, butterflies and lizards. We are also looking after a landscape that has survived for thousands of years and could soon be lost forever. The City of Burnside has shown that it is possible for natural heritage to survive and even flourish in an urban setting. We aim to protect, conserve and restore native vegetation and wildlife habitat and, in the Hills Face areas, to create landscapes which are easier to maintain and are less of a fire hazard. Depending on the needs of the site, we remove invasive weed species, allow natural regeneration and establish indigenous plants grown from locally collected seed. Some of the weeds that are displacing native plants and animals are trees and shrubs that have escaped from gardens. Examples are olive, pine, buckthorn and hawthorn. People should not be concerned about the gradual removal of these plants as they have little habitat value and constitute a major fire hazard. They are being replaced with indigenous vegetation that is far more useful to native wildlife. We also - rescue local plants from development sites; propagate local plants; make local plants available for planting in parks and reserves; provide advice about the conservation of remnant indigenous trees and native vegetation; develop and maintain walking trails through the Hills Face reserves; and eradicate newly-arrived weeds such as Monadenia and Bridal Creeper to prevent them from becoming established in Burnside. Volunteers are a big help in looking after native flora areas. We have volunteers from the Trees for Life program assisting in the Hills Face areas and several residents are helping with urban sites. Volunteers help with propagation, weed removal and planting, and learn about the local natural environment. People sometimes try to help but do damage by pulling up plants they don’t like and adding plants they do like. They also add their lawn clippings and other garden material to sites. All this can do a lot of damage, so it is important to contact Council before doing voluntary work on any site. FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL BURNSIDE’S GROUP LEADER, CONSERVATION AND LAND MANAGEMENT ON 8366 4267. Plants The local native plants once formed various grassy woodland communities dominated by BLUE GUM, GREY BOX, RED GUM, SHEOAK or NATIVE CYPRESS PINE. Under these trees grew a wide range of native grasses and wildflowers as well as shrubs that occurred either scattered or in thickets. The original ground flora is now either extinct or extremely rare in the urban areas, although quite a range of wildflowers and other plants can be found at some places on the Hills Face. Wildflowers that we are reintroducing into urban sites include the CLASPING GOODENIA, GARLAND LILY AND NATIVE BUTTERCUP. Mammals and reptiles GOANNAS are occasionally seen by residents near Slapes Gully. They are rare in the settled areas. ECHIDNAS are seen in most Hills Face reserves. Although now rare over most of the State, BRUSHTAIL POSSUMS are common and the shy RINGTAIL can also be seen. BLUETONGUE LIZARDS are still common, but are declining due to increased urban development and traffic. SHINGLEBACK LIZARDS are less common. There are several kinds of SKINK and a LEGLESS LIZARD in the Hills Face reserves. SNAKES are also common in the Hills Face areas and near creeklines. They are native animals and play a valuable role in the balance of nature. Care is obviously needed when you see a snake. BATS can be seen flying at dusk particularly in places where there are big gum trees or other roosting sites. FROGS generally lack suitable wetland habitat in Burnside. The MARBLED FROG (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis) is found in most wetland locations and al least two other species occur in First and Second Creeks. KOALAS were introduced into the Adelaide Hills in the 1920s and are now often seen in the eastern parts of Burnside. Birds Some common generalist native birds, such as MAGPIES, MINER BIRDS and several kinds of parrot, live throughout Burnside and adapt well to urban development. Many small birds have more particular habitat requirements and need native vegetation to provide their livelihood. Birds such as the WOOD SWALLOW, the EASTERN SPINEBILL and the CRESCENT HONEYEATER can still be seen in the Hills Face areas of Burnside. Several species of small birds, such as PARDALOTES and THORNBILLS, are important for controlling leaf-eating insects on gum trees. Establishing local shrubs will provide habitat for these birds and enable them to live in the urban areas. YELLOW-TAILED BLACK COCKATOO is frequently seen in the eastern parts of Burnside leaving its usual habitat in the hills to find seeds of the introduced pines. Its preferred food plant is HAKEA CARINATA, of which very few remain in Burnside. We are propagating this and other food plants and reintroducing them into the Hills Face to provide food for the cockatoos as we gradually remove the exotic pine trees. Butterflies More local plants will attract local butterflies. For example, a range of native grasses provides food for the COMMON BROWN and mistletoes provide food for the small blue OGYRIS butterflies. Others that are often seen in Burnside hills face reserves include the MEADOW ARGUS, the PAINTED LADY, the ADMIRAL, the GRASS YELLOW and the LESSER WANDERER. Urban sites Urban sites may be reserves, verges and traffic islands, and other small areas of land not used for other purposes. In some cases remnant native plants are being conserved and restored. In others, plants are being re-established. Where native vegetation is being conserved or re- established, we aim to - Conserve all indigenous plants on the site Plant only flora local to the area Eliminate weeds - completely for revegetation sites and gradually as appropriate for sites where naturally occurring local flora survives Maintain in a tidy condition Install minor infrastructure - paths, edging, erosion control Place blue markers so that Council staff and contractors can clearly identify these areas Hills face reserves and roadsides The Hills Face reserves are extensive areas of very degraded native vegetation that still contain a large diversity of flora and fauna. Vegetation improvement is a long-term program. The aim is to - ensure that native vegetation is properly protected and managed provide general support to contractors and volunteers reduce weed levels and increase local flora across the Hills Face provide a network of well maintained walking trails Alan E Cousins Reserve, remnant site MAP REFERENCE: 78 AREA: 0.5ha DESCRIPTION: Important remnant grassy woodland in urban setting; weeds include olives and various herbaceous species. NATIVE PLANT & ANIMAL SITESMany of Burnside’s native plants and animalsstill survive, but the natural woodlands andgrasslands that once supported them havealmost been lost (see small map showingoriginal distribution of woodland types in the Burnside area).

By looking after the indigenous plants ofBurnside we are providing food and shelter forwildlife, including small birds, butterflies andlizards. We are also looking after a landscapethat has survived for thousands of years andcould soon be lost forever.

The City of Burnside has shown that it ispossible for natural heritage to survive and evenflourish in an urban setting.

We aim to protect, conserve and restore nativevegetation and wildlife habitat and, in the HillsFace areas, to create landscapes which areeasier to maintain and are less of a fire hazard.

Depending on the needs of the site, we removeinvasive weed species, allow natural regenerationand establish indigenous plants grown from locallycollected seed.

Some of the weeds that are displacing native plantsand animals are trees and shrubs that have escapedfrom gardens. Examples are olive, pine, buckthornand hawthorn. People should not be concernedabout the gradual removal of these plants as theyhave little habitat value and constitute a major firehazard. They are being replaced with indigenousvegetation that is far more useful to native wildlife.

We also - rescue local plants from development sites; propagate local plants; make local plants available for planting in parks

and reserves; provide advice about the conservation of remnant

indigenous trees and native vegetation; develop and maintain walking trails through the

Hills Face reserves; and eradicate newly-arrived weeds such as

Monadenia and Bridal Creeper to prevent themfrom becoming established in Burnside.

Volunteers are a big help in looking after nativeflora areas. We have volunteers from the Trees forLife program assisting in the Hills Face areas andseveral residents are helping with urban sites.Volunteers help with propagation, weed removaland planting, and learn about the local naturalenvironment. People sometimes try to help but dodamage by pulling up plants they don’t like andadding plants they do like. They also add theirlawn clippings and other garden material to sites. All this can do a lot of damage, so it is importantto contact Council before doing voluntary work onany site. FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL BURNSIDE’S

GROUP LEADER, CONSERVATION AND LAND

MANAGEMENT ON 8366 4267.

PlantsThe local native plants once formed various grassywoodland communities dominated by BLUE GUM,

GREY BOX, RED GUM, SHEOAK or NATIVE CYPRESS

PINE. Under these trees grew a wide range of nativegrasses and wildflowers as well as shrubs thatoccurred either scattered or in thickets. Theoriginal ground flora is now either extinct orextremely rare in the urban areas, although quite arange of wildflowers and other plants can be foundat some places on the Hills Face.

Wildflowers that we are reintroducing into urbansites include the CLASPING GOODENIA, GARLAND LILY

AND NATIVE BUTTERCUP.

Mammals and reptiles GOANNAS are occasionally seen by residents near

Slapes Gully. They are rare in the settled areas. ECHIDNAS are seen in most Hills Face reserves. Although now rare over most of the State,

BRUSHTAIL POSSUMS are common and the shyRINGTAIL can also be seen.

BLUETONGUE LIZARDS are still common, but aredeclining due to increased urban developmentand traffic.

SHINGLEBACK LIZARDS are less common. There are several kinds of SKINK and a LEGLESS

LIZARD in the Hills Face reserves. SNAKES are also common in the Hills Face areas

and near creeklines. They are native animals andplay a valuable role in the balance of nature.Care is obviously needed when you see a snake.

BATS can be seen flying at dusk particularly inplaces where there are big gum trees or otherroosting sites.

FROGS generally lack suitable wetland habitat inBurnside. The MARBLED FROG (Limnodynastestasmaniensis) is found in most wetland locationsand al least two other species occur in First andSecond Creeks.

KOALAS were introduced into the Adelaide Hillsin the 1920s and are now often seen in theeastern parts of Burnside.

Birds Some common generalist native birds, such as

MAGPIES, MINER BIRDS and several kinds ofparrot, live throughout Burnside and adapt wellto urban development.

Many small birds have more particular habitatrequirements and need native vegetation toprovide their livelihood. Birds such as the WOOD

SWALLOW, the EASTERN SPINEBILL and theCRESCENT HONEYEATER can still be seen in theHills Face areas of Burnside.

Several species of small birds, such asPARDALOTES and THORNBILLS, are important for controlling leaf-eating insects on gum trees.Establishing local shrubs will provide habitat for these birds and enable them to live in theurban areas.

YELLOW-TAILED BLACK COCKATOO is frequentlyseen in the eastern parts of Burnside leaving itsusual habitat in the hills to find seeds of theintroduced pines. Its preferred food plant isHAKEA CARINATA, of which very few remain inBurnside. We are propagating this and other foodplants and reintroducing them into the Hills Faceto provide food for the cockatoos as wegradually remove the exotic pine trees.

ButterfliesMore local plants will attract local butterflies. Forexample, a range of native grasses provides foodfor the COMMON BROWN and mistletoes providefood for the small blue OGYRIS butterflies.

Others that are often seen in Burnside hills facereserves include the MEADOW ARGUS, the PAINTED

LADY, the ADMIRAL, the GRASS YELLOW and theLESSER WANDERER.

Urban sitesUrban sites may be reserves, verges and trafficislands, and other small areas of land not used forother purposes. In some cases remnant nativeplants are being conserved and restored. In others, plants are being re-established.

Where native vegetation is being conserved or re-established, we aim to - Conserve all indigenous plants on the site Plant only flora local to the area Eliminate weeds - completely for revegetation

sites and gradually as appropriate for sites wherenaturally occurring local flora survives

Maintain in a tidy condition Install minor infrastructure - paths, edging,

erosion control Place blue markers so that Council staff and

contractors can clearly identify these areas

Hills face reserves and roadsidesThe Hills Face reserves are extensive areas of verydegraded native vegetation that still contain a largediversity of flora and fauna. Vegetation improvementis a long-term program. The aim is to - ensure that native vegetation is properly

protected and managed provide general support to contractors and

volunteers reduce weed levels and increase local

flora across the Hills Face provide a network of well maintained

walking trails
