It is knitted in exquisite baby-alpaca yarn,with only the simplest embroidery andribbon bow details—a perfect project to useup any scraps of yarn left over from makingthe classic cardigan.

Approximately 31⁄4in/8cm in diameter
MATERIALS
1 x 13⁄4oz/50g ball (131yd/120m per ball) of RowanPurelife Organic Cotton DK Naturally Dyed (or asimilar double-knitting-weight organic cotton yarn)in ecruPair each of sizes 3 and 6 (3mm and 4mm) knittingneedlesSmall amount of natural organic cotton stuffing Small bellScraps of contrasting yarn for embroidery10in/25cm of 5⁄8in/1.5cm wide ribbon
GAUGE
25 sts and 35 rows to 4in/10cm square over St stusing size 3 (3mm) needles. Always work a gaugeswatch and change needle size if necessary.

RATTLE RING
With size 6 (4mm) needles, cast on 26 sts.Change to size 3 (3mm) needles and work as follows:
Row 1 (RS) [K1, k into front and back of next st—called kfb] to end of row. 39 sts.Beg with a p row, work 3 rows in St st.Row 5 [K2, kfb] to end of row. 52 sts.Beg with a p row, work 13 rows in St st.Row 19 [K2, k2tog] to end of row. 39 sts.Beg with a p row, work 3 rows in St st.Row 23 [K1, k2tog] to end of row. 26 sts.Bind off using size 6 (4mm) needles.
HEAD
With size 3 (3mm) needles, cast on 16 sts.Row 1 P.Row 2 [K1, kfb] to end. 24 sts.Beg with a p row, work 12 rows in St st.Row 15 [P2tog] to end of row. 12 sts.Cut yarn, thread through rem sts, pull up tightly, andsecure firmly.
EARS (MAKE 2)
With size 3 (3mm) needles, cast on 11 sts.Beg with a k row, work 2 rows in St st.Cont in St st, dec 1 st at each end of next row and 3 foll RS rows.Next row P3tog and fasten off.
TO FINISH
Sew together row ends of ring piece, using mattressstitch. Graft the cast-on and bound-off edges together,pushing stuffing into the rattle as you proceed.Sew head seam, leaving cast-on edge open. Stufffirmly with bell inserted in the center. Run a threadaround cast-on edge, pull up tightly, and secure.Sew ears to head and sew head to rattle.Embroider face with a cross-stitch and two Frenchknots as shown. Tie ribbon around neck and trim.
