Chemical-free water garden and swimming pool. The plant portion, or regenerationzone, is separated from the swimming area by the wall seen a few inches below thewater’s surface. www.naturalswimmingpools.com(http://www.naturalswimmingpools.com/aboutus.htm)

The pools have skimmers and pumps that circulate the water through the regenerationzone and back into the swimming area. The aquatic plants filter out contaminants anduse nutrients from the water as food which helps prevent algae. Then rocks, such asgranite river rock or haydite, to which friendly bacteria attach, act as biological filters.More questions answered here: www.ecodesignscape.co.u(http://www.ecodesignscape.co.uk/ecodesign/media/naturalSwimmingPoolsPublic.pdf)k& www.gartenart.co.uk (http://www.gartenart.co.uk/Your-Questions/Attractive-all-year-round.aspx)

There are many options as to design. Beneficial bacteria (micro-organisms andmicrobes) colonize the rock and help cleanse the water. www.clear-water-revival.com(http://www.clear-water-revival.com/)

Natural predators such as water striders and dragonflies will come to live in theenrichment area and feast on mosquitoes. If you chose to have a skimmer installed thiswill keep mosquitoes in check as well. Woodhouse demo pool -www.naturalswimmingpools.com (http://www.naturalswimmingpools.com/)

A hybrid natural pool usually has two circulation pumps. One where water is circulatedthrough the plant and rock filters before being discharged back to the bottom of thepond. The second surface circulation system pulls water through one or two skimmersfiltering out floating debris. Water drawn through the skimmers passes through sometype of filter system, such as a UV filter and/or a biofilter—essentially a box filled withbacteria-laden bio-media—before returning to the pool. A waterfall helps withoxygenation. South Africa: www.naturalswimmingpools.co.za(http://www.naturalswimmingpools.co.za/gallery.html)

Plants instead of chemicals -- have you ever thought about how many pounds ofchemicals go into a typical swimming pool?

Plants: A range of aquatic plants are used -- submerged (oxygenators), floating, shallow marginals, deep marginals, bog/marsh and waterside species. Wheneverpossible, it is best to use indigenous plants. Some examples of typical water plants:cattails, bulrushes, sedges, duckweed and water lilies.

natural pool builders in OregonReply #109 on : Wed August 19, 2015, 10:48:43

natural wetlandsReply #108 on : Mon August 10, 2015, 11:35:45

This does not have to be so complicated. I installed a wetlands filter in my Koi pond 17 years ago and thepond is as clear as tap water. I have large Koi, some over 30" and as one would suspect, they product aconsiderable amount of waste. The natural wetlands filter works perfectly and there is NO maintenance. My fish pond is 14' x 17' and 4 feet deep so I am confident that this would work perfectly for a larger bodyof water.

I have a question about the filtration system in the regeneration area is the system available or can it bemade with PVC pipe? I was thinking of doing a concrete pour with drainage trays you would use in adriveway and running PVC conduit to pump station via manifold. Will this work or is there a differentsystem under the stone?

The Question Is!Reply #106 on : Sat July 25, 2015, 18:51:47

Of course it would work. But can you afford it? Like one commenter said, when I win a $M, it'll be the firstthing I do. Add an aerator to the bottom, and you could have fishing, as well. Build it big enough, and youcould add a motor boat. Put in a big fan, and you could even sail a boat.I suggest you go to a real lake or pond to swim, just like most people do. Get real.

Africa's tropical climateReply #91 on : Mon June 16, 2014, 15:28:30

HiWe are building a house in the equatorial region of Africa in the tropical rain-forest. As we are trying tomaintain the biodiversity of this area, we would like to build our own water reservoir/natural swimmingpool. However I'm concerned about that the temperature will be too high for us to take a dip in it. Wouldplanting trees in tree-islands and around help or is it failed attempt already?Any suggestions are gratefully appreciated.Broni

Establishing pondReply #83 on : Mon December 16, 2013, 06:18:16

Please if you can help me with some advice. At the moment I try to arrange the garden. I also want to setup a pond. Specifically that the land is sloping and on the slope have lake . Pond at the moment is filledwith small natural spring water and has a depth of 0.5 m I want to dig to a depth of 2 m is also filled withmace . Wonder if there sap springs give even more ? Pond being in the slope when it rains very hardwater in the yard is it possible to drain even if terrace land . My idea would be to do it in a more natural ,without PVC film or membrane and structure it with natural stone and sand on the bottom and the sides ofstone rock . I think that the film becomes unsightly with time and in case of leaks in the pond can not befiled only on the bottom and no filters anywhere. Maybe there is the possibility of draining the lake insummer , spring flow depends here I need to check . But that would be the ideal solution ? I'd go with the

Removal of Dirt on bottom.Reply #80 on : Sat August 31, 2013, 23:22:54

We have a large swimming pond with a concrete like bottom. Above we have the plants, waterfall andbubbler in the main swimming pond. It sounds like a lot has been done right. However, the bottom hasprobably a foot of mud like dirt and muck. How do I get this out of the bottom? We have used a net toremove it from the shallow ends, but there is too much in the deep end and the nets are not strongenough anyhow to withstand the weight. Please help with any advise.

Existing PoolReply #79 on : Wed August 28, 2013, 11:19:28

Anyone in Costa Rica that can convert an existing pool for us?

You missed one....Reply #78 on : Thu August 22, 2013, 19:17:34

These companies use the same copycat technology. What you missed in your photos are the mostnatural ponds I've seen. Since we aren't allowed to use links here, try doing a search for natural pondslakes and streams by spring creek aquatic concepts. There you will see what you really desire. Theirponds seem cleaner and a lot more natural appearing. It could be because they are actual Biologists.

Interested in electricity costReply #77 on : Mon August 12, 2013, 20:10:17

How much does electric bill go up to keep the stream going 24 hours all summer long? Also, not reallyclear how to clean it every month (seems like a lot of maintenance). Other than that, looks pretty neat!

A Natural Swimming Pool can be built in any climate that water and aquatic plants coexist. Use the plantsthat are native to your area and you will have a healthy regeneration area. Providing that it is designedand built right.

I already have a built in poolReply #75 on : Sun July 28, 2013, 10:51:26

For what seems like a year I've been searching for some kind of instructions that would tell me how I canconvert my built in cement pool into a bio friendly pond, chemical free. Everybody wants to sell you theinstructions. I don't have the money to pay everyone for info that doesn't tell me anything more then whatI can see and guess from web photo's. There are not that many naturists left in the world I guess, that justwant to share the love because it's the right thing to do for the environment. Anyone have a suggestion, alink, a video, something that will tell me things like: will I need to raise the level of my pool or what plantare the best for natural algee filtration.

Existing PondReply #63 on : Wed January 23, 2013, 14:08:42

Is the liner absolutely necessary? I have an existing pond that would not be too difficult to separate adeep side for swimming, and a shallow side for plants/filtering, but would like to avoid the added cost of aliner.

Re: Natural Pools or Swimming PondsReply #62 on : Sun January 06, 2013, 14:49:06

I have an indoor pool, but really hoped to put in a lap pool outside. This would be a terrific way to do this.We would probably need a separate pond to satisfy the lovely Blue Herons, but that can be easily done. All would be in keeping with the natural and green place we are fortunate to have, and add to our sons'inheritance and love of this wooded and field place where they have grown.

They're beautiful but too many straight lines for 'natural' pools.

I LOVE the swimming pond idea but i am nervous about building one in South Texas where a poisonoussnake, the Water Moccasin is quite common.
