NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT – STRATEGIC
PLANNING
Enhanced socio-economic benefits and employment
creation for the present and future generations.
A department that is fully capacitated to deliver its
services efficiently and effectively.
To ensure safe, healthy and a sustainably managed
environment, which provides critical eco-system
services as a foundation for economic and social
development.
It also aims to intensify its fight against existing
invasive alien plants, wild fires, wetlands, land and
forest degradation, improving river health.
Strategic goals of the department
South Africa faces the challenge of deteriorating
environmental quality due to pollution and natural
resource degradation and destruction.
The increasing rate of alien species invasion
threatens biodiversity, water availability, agriculture
and rural livelihoods in general.
South Africa is a water-stressed country and face
future drying trends, the deteriorating quality and
quantity of water also remains a serious challenge.
Challenges and barriers
Contribute to sustainable development, livelihoods,
economic growth through skills development,
employment creation and infrastructure development.
Facilitate Environmental Education and render effective
and efficient communications service through training,
awareness, raising and improving access to information.
Effective bio-security system in place.
Strategic plan
WORKING FOR WATER:
WfW aims to eradicate alien invasive plants, eradicate
poverty
and create job opportunities.
WORKING FOR ECOSYSTEMS
WfE aims to improve the sustainability of livelihoods
and to
promote economic empowerment in rural areas, the
development of a market for ecosystem services. II
Partnerships
(Eastern Cape Thicket restoration initiative)
(Vuvu Grassland Restoration)
Environmental programmes
WORKING FOR FOREST
WfF promotes the conversion of invading alien plants
into
utilisable resources for meeting basic community
needs.
WORKING FOR ENERGY (BIOMASS TO
ENERGY)
This programme will promotes the general use of
biomass
through biogas, in providing energy and jobs to the
rural poor.
Environmental programmes
ECO FURNITURE PROGRAMME
The EF programme make use of the biomass cleared
through the
Working for Water programme, with a particular
emphasis on the
needs of disadvantage schools (school desks,
benches) as well as
Eco-coffins.
WORKING ON FIRE
This programme aims to create a platform for fire
awareness and
education amongst land users and the general public,
enhance
sustainability and protection of live, livelihoods and
ecosystem
services.
Environmental programmes
WORKING FOR WETLANDS
Working for Wetlands protects, rehabilitates the
sustainable use of
South Africa’s wetlands, rehabilitated wetlands
improve
livelihoods, protection of agricultural resources and
cleaner water.

Re-active APPROACH
• Wetland (water course) has
long since been washed
away
• Mass Gravity Structures
• Expensive material
component
• Engineer design required
• Re-create “man made”
Wetland
• Intrusive type of intervention
PRO-ACTIVE APPROACH
• Low material
costs
• Labour
intensive
• Semi-skilled
• Non intrusive
pONDING
• To traps fine silt
• To enhance absorption of water into the soil
• Creates environment suitable for plant growth
RE-SLOPING AND VEGETATION
• Slows the speed of flow and facilitates absorption
• Soil blanket and mulch are added to help stabilise the
soil and create favourable conditions for germination
