In your upcoming orders, you might not recognize your favorite Springtime products because they have a fancy new redesigned label. Some of the verbiage

on the label has changed as well, but rest assured that none of our products or formulas have changed. These remain the Springtime products you have loved and trusted for your animals from the beginning. Here are some answers to a few questions you might have.

Why change the labels?

For starters, we updated our logo and branding and couldn’t wait to show it off on our product labels. We hope you like the new clean, clear look and feel. By joining the NASC (see above), our product labels were redesigned to meet the NASC standard, and better yet, provide clarity and consistency to the industry we serve.

Why does it look like the ingredients have changed?

Rest assured that none of our formulas or products have changed — only the way we label them has changed. The NASC has specific labeling guidelines as it pertains to the dosage, the order of the ingredients, and how those ingredients are quantified. The NASC also designates products either as a feed supplement (nutrition) or as a dosage form animal health product (addressing a bodily mechanism), and you will see the ingredients listed under either the Guaranteed Analysis or Product Facts, respectively. The ingredients will be presented somewhat differently depending on this designation. We have updated our labels to meet these requirements. Why are there cautions and warnings on the label?

NASC Guidelines require cautions and warnings to be prominently displayed. Cautions inform of you of any special considerations regarding your animals. This could be information regarding pregnant or nursing animals or helpful instructions to avoid common mistakes or issues. Warnings are the same thing, but these are considerations for human safety. These statements are for you and your family to be mindful of when animal products are in your home.

1) Weight Is your pet carrying too much weight? Leaner pets tend to be healthier and have fewer diseases. However, obesity can lead to diseases such as diabetes, arthri-tis, and heart conditions among others. In addition, that added weight could be aggravating already sore joints and potentially causing further damage. If your dog is too large to weigh at home, most veteri-narians will allow clients to come in and check their pets’ weight without an appointment or fee.

2) Body Condition Does your pet have a waist? Most people don’t think about it, but your pet should have an hourglass fig-ure. Stand over your dog and look down. If your dog’s waist doesn’t narrow at least a little bit before the hips, he or she may be carrying extra pounds. Now we look at the pet from the side: Does his or her belly start to tuck behind the rib cage? You should be able to feel, but not see, your pet’s ribs. If your beloved furry friend is barrel-shaped, then it might be time to reduce your dog’s caloric intake. Please remember: You’re the one in control of filling the food bowl, and your pet is only in control of emptying it.

3) Ears As you look into your pet’s ears, they should be clean and pale pink (or skin colored depending on breed and coat color). There should be no brown, black, or waxy build-up. The ears should also be odor-free. Chronic ear goo could be another sign of allergies, and you may want to consider upgrading the diet or adding a supplement containing natural support for a healthy allergic response, such as bee pollen or spirulina (Longevity, Fresh Factors, etc.).

4) Skin Appearance & Itching Itchy skin can be caused by a variety of factors. The first step is to ensure that your pet does not have fleas. By using a simple flea comb and running it through your dog’s fur, you can check for fleas or “flea dirt.” It’s important to get the comb down to the skin as you brush it through, checking for tiny fleas or bits of black flea dirt. If you find either of these, you can use Diatomaceous Earth to rid your dog of fleas naturally, as well as any infested areas, such as bedding, couches, carpets, etc. Once the infestation is resolved, you can prevent future flea attacks with daily Bug Off Garlic.

If you don’t find any evidence of fleas, it is possible your pet is suffering from allergies or simply dry skin. When you part your pet’s fur and examine the skin underneath, the skin should be relatively pink (or comparable color, depending on coat color) and even-toned without any redness, bumps, flakes, or patches of moisture. You can take a good sniff while you’re at the skin level. Does it smell like “dog” or do you smell a yeasty or infection-type smell? These are further signs of allergies, and you might want to eval-uate your pet’s diet and perhaps consider upgrading.

A healthy allergic response can be supported by adding either Fresh Factors or Longevity to your pet’s meals. When fed daily, the nutrients in these two products nourish healthy skin. For healthy itch-free skin, consider adding Omega 3-6-9 or Skin & Coat Oil to the diet. Watch as the your pet’s coat shines with a healthy luster. Let’s think of it like this: Someone who eats fast-food hamburgers and fries every day isn’t going to have perfect skin and hair, but if they improve their diet, their acne and greasy hair will clear up.

5) Stool Appearance Stool appearance and consistency are important signs of your pet’s overall health. Your pet’s stools should be solid and formed but not hard. Coloring will vary depending on what is being fed (if a variety goes in, a variety will come out). You do not want overly soft stools. Also keep an eye open for para-sites. Regular stool sample checks by your veterinar-ian will ensure your pet remains worm-free.

Dear Springtime:

I have a rescue Pitbull/Boxer mix that I got when he was only 4 weeks old and on death’s door. The woman that I got him from was headed for the dump-ster with this puppy in a box, saying he wasn’t worth the time anyway. I couldn’t let this happen, obvious-ly, so I scooped him up and did my best to save his life that he hadn’t even begun to live yet.

I work in my local animal rescue as a foster coordina-tor, so working with sick puppies is nothing out of the norm for me. I started treating this puppy for his severe parasite infestation, muscle development issues, and skeletal problems. We almost lost him many times. My plan was to get him better and then find him a forever home through the rescue I work at, but he took so much work to keep alive that he ended up winning us over with his amazing spirit, infectious smile, and will to live! We named him Banks.

When I first started treating Banks, he had internal issues that were so bad that he had very thin, patchy hair, he could hardly walk, and his belly was so very bloated. Since the worms were taking all of his much needed nutrients, Banks suffered from many prob-lems. I decided I had to give him some sort of supple-ment in addition to the food he was on to really set him up for success.

I started feeding Banks your Fresh Factors when he turned about 6 weeks old and could finally eat solid food. I started with the maximum dose, because I knew he needed anything he could get to help him. In just two weeks, I couldn’t believe the improve-ment! We had just gotten him to be a normal puppy and there he goes getting himself trampled! Thankfully, he had no severe bone breaks, but he now walked with a limp. After all the work I put into him, I could not stand for him to be limping for the rest of his life. Enter Joint Health Chewables. Again, two weeks of the maximum dose and he was back to his normal self! I was in awe.

Now, Banks is 3 years old and gets 2 Fresh Factors and 2 Joint Health Chewables daily. He adores both, which is amazing, because he is NOT a fan of most treats. Dear Springtime:

Hugo is my 6-year-old, 125-lb American Bulldog. At 4 years old, he injured his knee in the dog park. I took him to the vet where he was x-rayed and put on a strong medication. The vet recommended a $3,000.00 operation with no guarantees. Huh? What does that mean? It means that he may have to stay on the drugs after the operation for a long peri-

od of time. Wow! I was in shock. This dog was hob-bled, couldn’t walk, and wouldn’t eat. I wasn’t sure what I should do. The price of the operation, the ongoing drugs, the liver tests, the post-operative care for a dog of that size — I even had thoughts of putting him down! It was very sad.

I declined the operation, used up the medication I had, and took it real easy for a while. Then I started your Springtime products! Day after day, week after week, he just kept getting better and better! And now, and for a very long time, he’s been just fine!

He runs around, goes for long walks, jumps up on the couch, and rolls on his back, kicking all four legs in the air. He does everything a dog should be doing! Boswellia (also known as frankincense) is an herbal supplement with potent health proper-ties made from the resin of the boswellia ser-

rata tree. For thousands of years, boswellia has been prized for its health properties, including support of a healthy inflammatory response.

Studies have shown that boswellic acid supports a normal inflammatory response by blocking the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase which then inhibits the synthesis of leukotrienes. It has also been shown to support healthy cartilage.

Chondroitin sulfate is a naturally occurring molecule found in the cartilage and connective tissues of people and animals.

Chondroitin is the substance that enables cartilage to provide cushion to healthy joints, and it is what the body uses to make new cartilage. Chondroitin also serves a vital role in the maintenance of healthy skin/coat. Chondroitin can be taken as a supplement to maintain healthy cartilage, joint lubrication, and healthy skin, nails, and hair.

Not all chondroitin is created equal

The chondroitin used in dietary supplements is extracted from the cartilage and connective tissues of animals. The most common animal sources are cow, pig, chicken, and shark. Chondroitin varies depend-ing on the source, and scientists have separated it

into three distinct classes: A, B, and C. This is important because chondroitin A has greater health benefits than B or C, and some animal sources have more chondroitin A than others. Customer Corner: Skin & Coat Oil and Omega 3-6-9


Skin & Coat Oil has solved a big problem that I haven’t been able to solve, even with different vets.

I have had Kipper, a rescue dog for 5½ years now. When I adopted him, he had a bad habit of sucking on one of his rear paws. The foster home who kept him told me that this was an ongoing thing, and although their veterinarian couldn’t find a solution, it didn’t seem to be a big problem. For 5 years he and I lived with it. Our veterinarian couldn’t find a solution either, other than several baths a week using an antibiotic shampoo. That didn’t cure it.

We moved across country, to a totally different environment, and it got much worse. Even with the veterinarian’s help, his leg became discolored, and he was nibbling at it constantly. Then came Skin & Coat Oil. After three days, he was nibbling at his leg and hind quarters far less. Since then, it has stopped completely. He is no longer sucking at his rear paw, either. The coloring is almost completely normal. He is resting well, and not in constant irritation, so his temper is better, and he has more energy.

I am attaching a recent photo of Kipper. He is 24½ lbs. and on a strict diet. He would be much heavier if I let him eat all that he wanted. In fact, he was much heavier when I got him. He is half Pembroke Corgi,

and half French Bulldog, and he is adorable. If Kipper had a Facebook account, he would have many, many friends, much more than I do. But he wouldn't keep it up, so he can’t have one!

I have used Springtime products on my dogs since 1986, and I recommend them to everyone with a dog.

How garlic works as a bug repellent: “It would seem that the powerful compounds such as allicin which garlic releases are inimical to mos-quitoes. They have therefore evolved to avoid garlic. Another possibility is that the strong smell of garlic overwhelms the mosquito’s sense of smell and pre-vents them from finding the prey. Whatever the mechanism, garlic’s ability to repel a variety of pests has been proven scientifically.” (Mendham, Trevor. “A Natural Mosquito Repellent: Garlic for Mosquito Control.” Garlic Central. 2003-2005.)

Garlic safety: Springtime has sold literally tons of garlic a year for over 20 years, and in that time, we have talked to plenty of customers concerning garlic’s efficacy, health benefits, and safety for both dogs and horses. There is a lot of misunderstanding about garlic, and most of the confusion stems from a single study in Japan where four dogs were force-fed extremely large amounts of raw garlic. Garlic preparations vary in chemistry, and the air-dried garlic we use con-tains very little of the oxidative component that may cause problems if used in excess, so it is gentle and absolutely safe for everyday, year-round use. We feel you may give our garlic with complete confidence.

Garlic for pregnant, nursing, and newborn animals: Many of garlic’s nutritional and protective proper-ties are passed on from the mother to the baby during gestation. The customers who have had the best experiences with nursing animals and garlic have introduced it very slowly, taking at least 10 days to ensure acceptance. Foals or puppies can be given garlic as soon as they are weaned. Many breeders report great results with this.

Increasing garlic with the change of seasons: Customers report best results when they give Bug Off Garlic year-round, and double or triple the dosage in the spring and the fall. Most people are aware that spring can be very buggy, but it’s less well known that fall is a concern, too. Insects like ticks surge in the fall, desperately looking for a last blood meal to survive the winter. We recommend giving Bug Off Garlic daily, year-round, because it can be challenging to re-introduce Bug Off Garlic after a hiatus, particularly with picky animals.

Garlic for animals other than dogs and horses: Our customers have used garlic successfully on miniature horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, rabbits, alpacas, llamas, deer, and cats as well as many other farm animals. You can calculate the correct dose by body weight according to the dog recommendations for smaller animals or the horse recommendations for the larger animals.

Garlic as a dewormer or heartworm preventative: Although Bug Off Garlic is helpful in reducing both internal and external parasites, you may wish to consult your practitioner for these issues. For dogs, mix-ing the granules with a little bit of a favorite canned goods, plain yogurt, liverwurst, or peanut butter, often helps.

G arlic (Allium sativum) has been valued for thousands of years for its medicinal purposes. Five thousand year old Sanskrit

and Chinese medical manuscripts describe the bene-fits of garlic. Today, garlic is grown all over the world and is making a strong comeback as a potent, effec-tive, natural remedy.

Garlic is a member of the lily family and of the same genus as the onion. Garlic has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal herb; in fact, Hippocrates advocated garlic for infections, cancer and digestive disorders. The great Roman naturalist, Pliny the Elder, also recommended garlic for a wide variety of ailments, ranging from the common cold to epilepsy and cancer.

Modern science has also established the fact that gar-lic boosts immunity, gets rid of bacterial, viral and fungal infections, enhances liver function, helps detox-ify the cells in the body, lowers cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood and even fights cancer.

Raw garlic cloves contain a high amount of a com-pound called alliin, as well as the enzyme alliinase. When garlic is crushed or diced, the alliin comes into contact with the alliinase enzyme and the compound allicin is formed. Cooked garlic is not nearly as therapeutic as freshly crushed or finely diced raw garlic.

A Victim of Poor Press Recently, the safety of garlic for dogs has come into question. That’s because one research study used a huge amount of garlic in their test dogs. When garlic is fed in very large amounts to dogs, it can cause oxidative damage to red blood cells, leading to a med-ical situation called Heinz body anemia. Knowledge is a powerful thing, but astute pet owners should gather all the data about garlic before shunning this cele-brated bulb.

Ironically, garlic is approved as a flavoring, spice or seasoning for use in pet food, yet the FDA has listed garlic in its poisonous plant database. That’s because a study suggested that when garlic is fed in excessive quantities (5 grams of whole garlic per kilogram of the dog’s body weight), it might cause damage to the red blood cells of dogs.

Considering the data presented in this study, the aver-age 75-pound Golden Retriever would need

to eat five full heads of garlic or about 75 cloves of garlic in each meal before there would be any adverse effect on the red blood cells. Similarly, a dog weighing a mere 10 lbs would need to eat 25 grams of garlic – about half an entire head of garlic, or about 6 to 8 garlic cloves in every meal to experience any adverse effects.

How many dogs do you know who would either be given or would want to eat that many cloves of garlic? Drinking too much water can kill you, but we all drink water. In fact, we all know that drinking water is a healthy thing to do. So what’s healthy and what’s too

much? It’s obvious that all this “garlic is bad for your dog” hype has been taken totally out of context.

Furthermore, the total reported adverse affects from garlic add up to a non-event over the past 22 years. The National Animal Supplement Council responsi-bly records both Adverse Events and Serious Adverse Events resulting from the use of natural products.

A Serious Adverse Event is defined as: “An Adverse Event with a transient incapacitating effect (i.e. ren-dering the animal unable to function normally for a short period of time, such as with a seizure) or non-transient (i.e. permanent) health effect.” 900 million doses of garlic over a 22 year time span resulted in only two Serious Adverse Events and these episodes

could very well have been due not to garlic, but to another ingredient in the mix. This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the risk of using garlic is so low that it’s statistically insignificant.

It’s Time to Reconsider Garlic What is significant is all the positive research delin-eating the medicinal powers of garlic. Among garlic’s reputed benefits, perhaps the best known is its natu-ral antibiotic activity, with reports going back through history. In fact, Pasteur noted garlic’s anti-bacterial benefits in 1858. Modern researchers have compared the effectiveness of garlic with that of antibiotics and have found that garlic has a broad spectrum antibacterial effect. Additionally, bacteria don’t seem to build up a resistance to garlic as they do to many modern antibiotics.

But that’s not all. Garlic increases the immune activ-ity of Killer Cells (cells that seek out and kill invading bacteria and cancer cells). Uncooked garlic also helps lower blood triglycerides and cholesterol, making it useful for certain breeds (Schnauzers and Beagles) that are predisposed to this problem.

A 1988 study found that diallyl sulfide, a compound in garlic, prevented tumor formation in rats. Other studies have shown that garlic inhibits various forms of cancer growth in the body. Garlic also enhances overall liver function and triggers enzyme responses to help break down waste materials before they go into the bloodstream. In other words, garlic helps the liver out – and in today’s toxic world, our dogs’ livers need all the help they can get.

Additionally, garlic has been fed to dogs to help pre-vent flea infestations. There are many products on the market containing garlic for this very purpose. Both powdered and raw garlic are effective, although raw garlic has significantly more health benefits.

How to Prepare Garlic To release its medicinal properties, garlic first has to go through a chemical process so the allicin can be created. It’s best to finely chop or crush the garlic clove, then wait a few minutes to allow the chemical reaction to occur. The healing allicin is unstable when exposed to air and heat, so don’t wait more than 20 minutes before you top your dog’s meal with some healthy raw garlic.

A host of studies provide evidence that the allicin in garlic works to inhibit cancer formation. With cancer being the number one cause of death in dogs in the United States, let’s all get going with garlic! Buy a garlic press or simply

chop some up. You can then mix it in with your dog’s meal.

While cooking garlic destroys allicin, other compo-nents in cooked or powdered garlic continue to pro-vide some benefits to your dog’s health. The cooked garlic will still function as an antioxidant and help flush toxins out. If you cook meals for your dog, it’s totally fine to add garlic as a flavoring and for improved health.

It’s no wonder garlic has been valued for thousands of years for its medicinal purposes. 1. Hide & Seek

This classic game is excellent for practicing your pup’s waiting skills, as well as teaching them to search. Plus, seeing them get excited every time they find you is a great perk for your rainy day.

2. Shell Game The Shell Game is perfect for your mutt’s mental stim-ulation. Take two opaque cups and turn them over. With your dog watching, place a treat under a cup. Give your dog the cue to come turn over the cup and get the treat. Do this a handful of times, letting your dog really understand the game. Then, alternate which cup you place the treat under. When your dog selects the correct cup, let him have the treat. If (and when)

he doesn’t select the correct cup, show him the treat under the correct cup but don’t let him have it.

If your dog mas-ters this, it’s time

to challenge him even more. Place a treat under the left cup, and then slide the cups to switch places, so that the cup with the treat is now on your right. Amp up the game by adding more cups.

3. 52-Toy Pickup

Start with the “drop it” command. Getting your dog to drop on command is essential for this cleanup game.

Start training your dog to drop toys in a basket or box. Treat the stages of the behavior a little at a time, such as whenever your dog heads toward the basket with the toy, or dropping the toy near the basket. Eventually, your dog will understand that a command like “put away” means to drop the toys back in the basket.

After this part is mastered, build up the number of toys your dog picks up. Start with rewarding your dog each time he puts a toy away. Then reward him only after he

puts away two toys, then only after three toys and so on. Eventually, the reward will only come when every toy is put away, and a command like “clean up” will have your dog running around the room finding every toy as quickly as they can to win the big jackpot of treats.

4. Go Find It Similar to Hide-and-Seek, Go Find is for searching for a treat, as opposed to searching for you. This game is great for learn-ing self-control and the “wait” command, as your pup is stuck in the sit position while you hide treats in a variety of places. Once you say “go” he will run around to get them all.

5. Teach your furry friend a new trick! If your pet has already mastered “speak”, “lay down” and “roll over”, add to their performance list with tricks such as standing on their hind legs, jumping through a hoop, playing dead, or bringing their leash to you.
