The Iona Legion in partnership with Naturally Active for Life Victoria County (Est. 2011) and CB District Health Authority wish to promote healthy living and exercise by hosting monthly Family Square Dancing Ceilidhs. We would like to have strong interest from all ages so that we can have individual sets for school age, adults, and seniors on the floor at the same time.

This will be a great opportunity to teach our youth traditional Scottish dancing, excellent form of exercise, and all while having fun for all ages.

We are also looking for leaders to help organize and assist with this venture. if interested, please let us know that you are willing to help us out.

The first Family Ceilidh is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 17th from 7-9 PM

This is a half marathon distance which starts at Boularderie Elementary School, Victoria County. Hot showers are available to warm you up and a pasta dinner provided by Boston Pizza will be served after the race. There is an 11 am start time for “slower” runners and the official start is at 12 noon. In the event of a storm the race will then place on the January 19, 2017.

Challenging Watch for the Franey Trail Road sign on the Cabot Trail in Ingonish.Please note: Pending conditions, parking at the trailhead may not be accessible and a snowshoe to the trailhead from the secondary road may apply.

This hike includes a climb of 366 metres in 3 hours or less. Enjoy a panoramic view of the Clyburn Valley and Middlehead. We will hike through mixed woods to a cliff-top look off providing breathtaking views of the Clyburn Valley and the surrounding highlands, extending ridge upon ridge into the distance.

                                                             The Seniors Advisory Committee of District 5, in conjunction with the NS Department of Seniors is pleased to announce “Sessions For Seniors” to take place in Ross Ferry and Big Bras d’Or.  The first of these sessions will take place on Feb. 26th in Ross Ferry and the 2nd session on Sunday March 5th in Big Bras d’Or.

The topic of the first session will be “Food and Nutrition.” In this session, participants will prepare a meal and of course enjoy the results of their hard work. Throughout the session cooking and nutrition tips will be discussed. You only need to bring an apron, small cutting board and a peeling & paring knife and lots of appetite.

The session in Ross Ferry will take place at the Ross Ferry Hall on Sunday February 26, 2017 from 1:00pm until 5:00pm. SPACE IS LIMITED.  Register before February 22, 2017 by emailing Lars [email protected]

Big Bras d’Or Fire Hall10:30 am – 12 pm

Provides yoga and drum workout that doesn’t need prior experience but requires participants desire to do simple movements to music. It’s designed for the participant to be able to workout while having fun, do basic yoga poses and keep a beat while moving in a facility that is open, clean, safe, friendly and spacious providing a desirable environment for conducting community activity

During the 90 minute program, the leader will introduce an activity that is comfortable and non-competitive focusing on breath and basic yoga asana performed to music. The second half of the program will be an active drumming session using chairs, drums and sticks. A Savasana will conclude the session. After the class, there will be an opportunity to socialize while drinking Chai Tea!

The activity will require a yoga mat and drum sticks which will be provided. Yoga poses will be simple and done slowly and safely. Drumming will involve basic dance steps to a drumbeat using drumsticks, drums and chairs. This style of yoga and drumming is unique and not done anywhere else in Cape Breton!

Snowshoe Walk around Hector’s Point1:00 pm – For 2017, the Iona Heights Inn & the Highland Village are hosting six separate “Hector’s Point Snowshoe Walks”

This will be a hike around the Highland Village. It will be approximately 3km, and end at the pub with a 10oz pint (for those that are 19/over), or a cup of Jill’s Hot Chocolate. Walk is for all ages. Shorter routes available if need be.
