PASSING ON THE FIREMy great-grandfather Wilhelm Swarovski, who founded
SWAROVSKI OPTIK, was an enthusiastic lover of nature.
One of his favorite spots was the imposing Habicht mountain
in the Stubai Alps, where he used to go to relax, recharge
his batteries, and work on new ideas, visions, and projects.
He also enjoyed observing the native wildlife, and was abso-
lutely fascinated by the majestic hawks, renowned for their
extremely powerful vision. When looking for an animal as a
company crest for SWAROVSKI OPTIK exactly 30 years ago,
the hawk was the obvious choice, representing, on the one
hand, the company’s deep roots in Tyrol and, on the other, the
precision that SWAROVSKI OPTIK has been aiming toward
ever since with its long-range optical products.
Decades have passed since then. Many things have changed,
but a lot remains the same: the hawk is still the company crest –
the clear acknowledgement of the location and also the
constant endeavor made by everyone to continually improve
our products.
In this respect, we view tradition at SWAROVSKI OPTIK not
in terms of worshipping the ashes, but of passing on the fire.
Our highly skilled staff, who drive forward developments with
a pioneering spirit and a love for detail, carry this flame in
them. Revolutionary innovations, such as the brand-new
ATX/STX spotting scope system, are testament to the fact
that we not only want to do things better, but also differently.
Whenever you hold and look through one of our products, and
experience a very special moment with SWAROVSKI OPTIK,
I want you to sense the same joy and fire that we also feel
every day for our work. After all, the world belongs to those
who can see beauty.

Our product innovations are clear proof that SWAROVSKI OPTIK is consistently breaking the
mold. The revolutionary modular ATX/STX spotting scope system or SWAROVISION technology
are worth mentioning here as outstanding examples of this.
This spirit of innovation pervades the entire company at SWAROVSKI OPTIK. Deliberately
conceiving and creating things in a new and exciting way, in keeping with the times, was
our main inspiration for this brochure. Our wish is to provide you with a variety of interesting
features to read that illuminate all aspects of nature observation, travel destinations, culture,
and birds worldwide.
The sections are therefore arranged according to areas of use, rather than being strictly divided
up based on product groups. We believe that this is a more modern and attractive way to
convey our message. The products presented in each section are the top recommendations
from our experts.
The articles were also produced with the assistance of our colleagues who work for
SWAROVSKI OPTIK across the globe, and who are keen to share their priceless expertise
with you. We would like to thank them for their help!

just thinking about the next five or ten years,
but about future generations.

look at where and how a company manufactures
its products.

beyond purely technical aspects. The whole
package matters to us: outstanding optics,

GOOD. BETTER. AWESOME!The most important thing you need to be a better birder is dedication.
Or, as renowned birder Kenn Kaufman puts it, “Birding is something
we do for enjoyment; so if you enjoy it, you’re a good birder. If you
enjoy it a lot, you’re a great birder.” With the help of dedicated birder
Martin Garner, we have compiled a list of the best tips to help you go
from being a good to an outstanding birder.
ADOPT A CHILDLIKE PERSPECTIVE AND RETAIN A SENSE OF WONDERIt may sound simple, but just think back to that moment when, for
the very first time, you really took notice of a bird and remember
the unique feelings associated with it. Many a birder will be able to
describe this wonderful experience to you in precise detail. If you
can learn to embrace the same enthusiasm, joy, curiosity, and sense
of wonder every time you go birding, you’ll automatically become a
better birder.
FIND OUT HOW YOU LEARN BESTDon’t limit your expectations in terms of what you’ll discover or experi-
ence the next time you go birding. Many people only see what they’ve
been told they will see beforehand, or they just notice what they expect
to see. But there are so many opportunities for you to be able to
broaden your horizons. Many learn best by reading up about birds,
some prefer listening, and others have to be out and about. If you
discover what your favorite method of learning is when you’re birding,
you’re onto a winner.
OVERCOME THE LIMITATIONS OF BOOKSMost people who are just getting into birding start off with an appropriate
reference book. Over time, the books you read usually become more
comprehensive and specialized. But you should bear in mind that books
can also impose limits. No matter how detailed a book is, it won’t cover
many aspects of birding, such as unusual behavior, meaning it shouldn’t
necessarily be regarded as the be all and end all. It would be better to
start off by asking bird biologists questions and thinking about their
responses. And don’t forget, in addition to all the books, to go out into
nature every day and watch birds, no matter where you are.
IMPROVE YOUR VISUAL ACUITY: SEE THROUGH THE EYES OF A HAWKAccording to an old birder adage, the eye can see better with practice.
The more you observe birds, the more you’ll notice and the sooner
you’ll be able to recognize and identify things. However, the human
eye, by its very nature, also has finite limits. Anyone looking through
a modern spotting scope for the first time will be overwhelmed by
the clarity of detail, brightness, and by how close you can get to
birds. Through the brand-new ATX/STX spotting scope system from
SWAROVSKI OPTIK, you can see fine details on a distant sandpiper
that you never would have dreamed possible – almost like through the
eyes of a hawk. Never before has there been a spotting scope with
such outstanding detail resolution with up to 70x magnification. And
with the EL 50 binoculars you are also best equipped to experience
indescribable detail and viewing pleasure.

Learn, depending on your situation, how you
can get closer to the birds in your surroundings
and interact with them.
Make mistakes, knowing that everyone else
makes them too.
There’s no such thing as a bad day’s birding.
Go out for as long as you can, even if it’s only
for ten minutes.
Make your locality your favorite place for
birdwatching and find out what you can learn
and discover there.
12 simple tips for better birding
FOCUSED VIEW
Specialize in one subject, for instance
identifying hawks, garden bird behavior,
or recording bird sounds.
Set yourself a specific goal, such as you’d like
to discover a particular species. You won’t
always be successful, but you’ll learn an awful
lot in the process.
Make lists of the different areas for watching
birds in your locality, and visit them as often as
you can to find out what potential they offer.
Collect information in a structured manner
by making individual recordings and sketches,
taking photographs, writing observations down,
sharing what you’re learning with others and,
very importantly, seek the company of birders
who can encourage and challenge you.
Watch birds every time as if you were
doing it for the first time.
Expect to learn something every time,
even if you’re only watching in your
immediate surroundings.
Retain your desire for discovery and
constantly ask questions.
Develop your own methods for describing
and remembering both what you see and hear,
and avoid using mundane descriptions.

WHERE THE VULTURES CIRCLESpain’s Extremadura region is regarded as the dream destination for birders and digiscopers in Europe. This area in western Spain, which is relatively sparsely populated, is home to as many as 337 bird species, including 194 breeding birds, in the course of a year.
DIVERSITY OF BIRDING
The Monfragüe National Park is located in the
province of Cáceres, in northern Extremadura.
Here, the partially dammed Tagus and Tiétar
Rivers join together to form the ideal breeding
ground for birds of prey, thanks to the deep
rocky gorges. The national park is bordered in
the north and south by grazed “dehesas,” oak
woodlands, which also provide a source of food
for many bird species.
This expansive area offers several vantage points
that are extremely conducive to digiscoping. One
example is the Castle of Monfragüe. This for-
tification dates back to the ninth century and
provides a striking backdrop in the midst of this
bird kingdom, as well as a magnificent view of
the turquoise waters of the Tagus.
However, the main attraction in Monfragüe is
undoubtedly the “buitres” – the vultures, with
the park being home to a large number and
variety that cannot be found in any other region
in Europe.
But Monfragüe is arguably most famous for
its Eurasian Black Vultures. With a wingspan
of nearly 3 meters (9.8 ft), they are one of the
largest flying bird species in Eurasia. Being
able to observe these powerful, imposing birds
of prey up close is a unique privilege and a
really humbling experience for any birder.
In Monfragüe there are more than 330 pairs
of these remarkable scavengers – the largest
concentration of Eurasian Black Vultures in the
whole of Europe.
Many of the rocks are a hub of frenetic flying
activity all day long, especially since the Eurasian
Black Vultures are not the only vultures in the area.
In fact, according to current estimates, the popu-
lation of Griffon Vultures is at least twice as high.
This species has a surprisingly long neck – useful

This is precisely why it is important that our binoculars can also perfectly handle the broadest range of environments perfectly. The EL 42 binoculars are particularly multifunctional and versatile. SWAROVISION technology and a large field of view bring all bird lovers closer to vultures, eagles, or even butterflies, as well as to the bird species that you have in the forests near your home.

PRECISION IN ACTIONAn unrivaled close-up setting of 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) and the rapid, reliable focusing mechanism make the EL 42 a real multitalented product for birders who also like wandering in the forest.
for reaching in to carcasses – and can be seen
nesting in their hundreds on the jagged rock
faces in the park.
There is yet another species of vulture here that
can inspire spectacular photos: the Egyptian
Vulture. Around 30 pairs of these vultures visit
Monfragüe in the spring and summer months.
One fascinating feature of this vulture, one of the
smallest of the vultures, is that while spending
their winters in Africa, they have been known
to break large ostrich eggs using stones. This
remarkable talent for using tools or implements
is only known from a few bird species.
The vultures arouse great fascination among
visitors, yet they are just one of many species
of birds on display in the colorful bird world
of Extremadura. There are also numerous
endangered species in the region, such as the
Spanish Imperial Eagle or Black Stork that take
refuge there.

OUT OF LOVE FOR NATURECountless people all over the world have been fascinated by birdwatching over the last few decades. A brief, historical outline of how birdwatching evolved and its close relationship with environmental protection from the outset is presented below.
Before the 18th century, birds were regarded
either with fear and distrust, as a bad omen, or
they were seen merely as a source of food. It
was only when Gilbert White, a Hampshire vicar,
came along that this image was transformed.
He didn’t want to accept the common practice
of having to shoot a bird first in order to be able
to determine its species. This made him one of
the first birdwatchers. His book “The Natural
History and Antiquities of Selborne,” written in
1789, remains one of the most published books
in the UK to this day. This highlights the great
interest in the subject and also why England
is seen as the home of birdwatching. In the
late 19th century, institutions like the Audubon
Society in the USA or the Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds in the UK started their work
to protect birds.
After the Second Industrial Revolution in the
early 1920s, the first major movements to
embrace the notion of environmental protec-
tion emerged – and these were also in the UK.
People no longer lived in and with nature, but
instead visited it at weekends, and they had a
concern for the protection of unspoiled areas
from industrialization.
In the UK, birdwatching became known and
popular as a mass movement mainly in the
1960s and 1970s. One of the main reasons
for this can be traced back to the wide range
of TV shows devoted to birds and nature.
Their presenters became celebrities, and this
development continues to this day, with the
successful BBC shows “Springwatch” and
“Autumnwatch.” The enthusiasm shown
for these programs encourages people to
connect more with their environment and
stand up for nature conservation.
And there’s no sign of the popularity of bird-
watching waning. According to recent surveys,
there are around 6 million Britons and over 46
million Americans interested in birdwatching.
Not to mention the growing number of celebri-
ties that are said to be birdwatchers, like Mick
Jagger, Daryl Hannah, and Cameron Diaz –
these celebrities suddenly make it cool to be
interested in nature.
The growth in popularity and importance of
birdwatching has also been accompanied by
a constant improvement in the equipment
available to birdwatchers. The success of
SWAROVSKI OPTIK, therefore, goes hand
in hand with that of birdwatching, with the
evolution of the SLC 42 binoculars showing
this beautifully. The SLC range of binoculars,
with reliable high-precision optics and a sturdy,
solid design, was first presented in 1989. In the
same year, the first British Birdwatching Fair
also took place in Rutland Water, which has
since grown to become a major crowd-puller.
The aim of the organizers, namely to protect
nature, was backed by SWAROVSKI OPTIK
right from the start. The latest, third generation
of these popular multipurpose binoculars stands
out thanks to a smaller, more compact design,
crystal-clear, lifelike color reproduction, and a
price-performance ratio that is second to none.
This makes them a very sensible choice for bird-
watchers wanting to explore the beauty of nature,
and for those committed to the environment.
SWAROVSKI OPTIK was founded by Wilhelm
Swarovski more than 60 years ago with the
aim of bringing nature closer. The company
has continued to develop in this direction, with
environmentally sensitive production processes
and the support of numerous nature conser-
vation projects. Conservation work with Le
Balkan Foundation, a small NGO in Bulgaria,
has brought positive results for the threatened
Dalmatian Pelican. Continuous work with the
colony since the late 1990s has taken the form
of, amongst other things, the protection of an
important breeding colony and the provision
of numerous breeding platforms to protect
breeding birds from roaming predators. In
addition, SWAROVSKI OPTIK has joined forces
with the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection
of Birds) as the “Species Champion” of the
Sociable Lapwing in BirdLife International’s
“Preventing Extinctions Programme," helping
to ensure a deeper understanding of the trans-
regional threats to the species and actively
working at all levels to ensure its long-term
survival in the wild.

SWAROVSKI OPTIK North America Naturalist
Market Manager Clay Taylor shares this
opinion, and has already been on many a trip
to this natural paradise.
Any birder or nature lover traveling to Costa
Rica for the first time is likely to be over-
whelmed by the huge diversity of flora and
fauna. It is normally a good idea to join an
experienced nature guide, like Alex Villegas
from San José. For more than 20 years, Alex
has been guiding people with great enthusi-
asm, collecting an invaluable treasure chest
of knowledge and insider tips on the best
places. As more than a quarter of Costa Rica’s
land area is protected, there are more than
25 wildlife parks – so you really have a myriad
of options open to you.
On their most recent trip through Costa Rica,
Clay Taylor and Alex Villegas visited the Los
Quetzales National Park. Set up in 2005, one
of the park’s main aims is to preserve the
natural habitat of the gorgeous Resplendent
Quetzal. Getting a glimpse of this “luck-bearing
bird of god,” as it was described by the
Aztecs because of its rare, enigmatic beauty,
is definitely one of the highlights for anyone
traveling to Costa Rica.
The reverence for the Resplendent Quetzal
goes way back to the pre-Columbian tribes,
who hunted it for its magnificent tail feathers.
But anyone who killed this bird, which was
honored as a deity, was sentenced to death
by the Aztecs. It is a symbol of freedom and
decorates the national emblem of Guatemala.
BIRD PARADISE ON EARTHJust imagine 850 species of birds in an area of just 51,000 square kilometers (19,691 square miles). The Central American country of Costa Rica is one of the most dreamt-of holiday destinations for birders and nature lovers.

The male birds, with their scarlet belly, are
the main focus of attention, but discovering a
Resplendent Quetzal in the cloud forest areas
is a particular challenge. When searching
for them, Clay and Alex rely not only on their
intuition, but also on their equipment.
“You’re definitely at an advantage if you’re
using good optical equipment when birding
in the rainforest. The small, light, crystal-clear
EL 32 binoculars do a brilliant job and are
great for finding the tiniest of birds even in
foggy and rainy conditions,” says Clay Taylor.
Alex Villegas is excited about the new modular
ATX spotting scope system: “Compact design
and light weight are essential when making
arduous journeys through the rainforest.
With its relatively small 65-mm objective lens
diameter, the ATX 65 is the perfect travel
spotting scope, and you don’t miss out on
top-class optical performance, a large field of
view, and an impressive close focus.”
The pair were rewarded with many unique
viewing experiences during their trip. In
addition to their pursuit of the Resplendent
Quetzal, other highlights of this spectacular
journey included a Silvery-throated Jay, Black-
crested Coquette, and the tiny Snowcap (a
type of hummingbird).
LIGHT AND HANDYIts small objective lens diameter and modular structure mean this travel scope has a compact design.
LETTING YOUR EYE ROAMOutstanding optical quality brings you close to your subject, even in faraway countries.
ATX/STX 25-60x65BETTER OVER LONG DISTANCES
In distant countries exotic birds frequently appear before birders’ lenses. On these occasions it may take some time to capture a picture. But the wait is worthwhile when you experience, close up, the wonderful array of colors in the plumage through a high-quality spotting scope. The ATX/STX 25-60x65 provides you with special views because this lightweight, compact scope is the perfect companion on every trip. GO WEST!
We’d like to share with you the most beautiful
and spectacular highlights, and the best bit of it
is that having CL Companion binoculars in my
luggage made it an even more intense experience.
Vancouver: it was good to move around after
endless hours on the plane. We rented bikes
and went off to explore Stanley Park, the largest
in Canada. Half a million trees welcomed us as
we leisurely cycled around the park’s sea wall and
visited the eight native Indian totem poles. Lo and
behold: having binoculars meant that we could
make out their colorful details even better.
Next stop, Seattle: we chose to travel from Canada
to the US by sea, and we didn’t regret it. On the
crossing, which lasted around three hours, we
not only saw the most wonderful landscapes, but
were also incredibly lucky to be able to watch
whales from the ship. Good thing we had the
CL Companion binoculars at hand.
Next stop, San Francisco: we traveled by car to San
Francisco via Portland and discovered the lovely
coast of Oregon en route. Many feel that this is
where the Pacific is at its most beautiful, which is
a view that we happily subscribe to. We were par-
ticularly impressed by our trip to Redwood National
Park with its huge California redwood trees. After
so many spectacular impressions of nature, we
enjoyed the colorful contrast offered to us by Frisco,
the popular Pacific metropolis.
Destination Los Angeles: having escaped the
hustle and bustle of the big city, we longed for
nature again. The divine Big Sur coastal section
didn’t disappoint at all in this respect. Using the
CL Companion binoculars we spotted sea lions,
sea otters, and gray whales. After this, we were
all geared up for the biggest city on our trip: LA.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to see
that many attractions, sights, museums, etc. But
one thing is for sure: we’ll be back!
There’s a succession of features of natural beauty along the west coast of the US and Canada. A wonderful journey of discovery for the whole family took us from Vancouver in Canada to Seattlein the US, and from there along the famous and breathtaking Highway 1 to Los Angeles via San Francisco.

TO THE END OF THE WORLDBy exploring the remotest corners of Alaska by ship, you can take in some of the most magical landscapes in the world while tracing the journey of great explorer Vitus Bering, although in much greater comfort. Untouched, unspoiled nature, impressive animal habitats, and countless impressions that you will never, ever forget. The trip of a lifetime.
SPECIAL FEATURE: ADVENTURE CRUISE
TRIP HIGHLIGHT: KODIAKThe National Wildlife Refuge of the same name is home to more than 2,000 brown bears and 600 pairs of bald eagles. All five species of North American salmon are found in its rivers, and the coastal waters are, at times, used by more than 1.5 million seabirds. In a word: incredible.
TRIP HIGHLIGHT: SHUMAGIN ISLANDSOne sight worth seeing on this group of islands is the petrified trees that have been declared a National Natural Landmark. There is also a completely open view of the 2,700-meter (8,858-ft) Pavlov Volcano, one of the most active in the region.
TRIP HIGHLIGHT: YUKON DELTAEven back in 1909, US President Theodore Roosevelt recognized the significance of this tundra plain when he declared it a conservation area for native birds. With an area of 77,000 km2 (29,730 square miles), this delta between the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers is one of the largest nesting sites for waders in North America. The courses of the river also offer spawning and retreat areas
for 44 fish species, while the uplands are inhabited by brown and black bears, as well as moose, caribou, and muskox. On the coast, whales pass by on their migration.
TRIP HIGHLIGHT: BAR-TAILED GODWITNo bird flies further than this long-distance migrant. In 2007, a bird tagged with a mini-transmitter and nicknamed “E7” was shown to fly 11,500 km (7,146 miles) or nine days non-stop to its first stopover – from Alaska across the Pacific to New Zealand. The Yukon Delta also plays a major role in this, allowing the birds to build up their strength in summer for their trans-Pacific flight, with a large supply of food and few natural enemies.
TRIP HIGHLIGHT: EL 32 Always ready at hand to capture awesome impressions up close. Enjoy unusual iceberg formations, animals that you’ve never seen before, or simply the beauty of nature. The lightweight design means that the EL 32 binoculars can fit into any travel kit, and their crystal-clear optical quality lets you discover details that would have left even Vitus Bering speechless.
EL 32A PERFECT SEA VIEW
If you’re exploring distant countries or unique landscapes, this imposes particular demands on long-range optical systems. If you’re watching dolphins swimming alongside the bow of your ship, or birds approaching land, you need binoculars that are particularly com-fortable to hold and offer crystal-clear optics. The EL 32 binoculars can offer all this and much more. They are small, light, and com-pletely ergonomic. The large field of view and SWAROVISION technology provide you with true-color, sharp, high-contrast images.
CRYSTAL CLEAR ON THE HIGH SEASBrilliant SWAROVISION technology allows you to see true-color, sharp, high-contrast images. An optical system that sets the benchmark in this area.
CLASSIC DESIGNThe ultimate in binoculars that combines light weight, perfect handling, and a refined design.
COMFORTABLE VIEWSThe large field of view gives you a better impression of what is going on.

What makes digiscoping so fascinating?
DALE FORBES: What makes digiscoping
most special is that it allows you to capture
moments at a distance, without needing to
get too close to the subject. For instance,
nowadays practically anyone can take great
photos of rare or beautiful birds even if they
are far away, something that was previously
only possible with big, heavy telephoto lenses.
Why is digiscoping so popular among birders?
DF: Birding is not a passive hobby, but one
where you’re on the move and outside a lot.
Digiscoping complements this well, as the
equipment tends to be relatively light and
when you come across something spectacu-
lar or discover something unusual – even if it
is shy or at a distance – you can easily take
a photo or make a short video. This can be a
great addition to field sketches and notes, and
often proves to be invaluable when trying to
identify rare or unusual species.
But surely, the point of digiscoping is not just to identify species of birds or animals?
DF: That’s right. Digiscoping is much more
than just a means of identification. For many,
the main aim of their photos is to capture
an awe-inspiring experience of nature or a
moment of beauty or action. These images
can be just wonderful to look at.
What equipment do you recommend for digiscoping?
DF: It depends entirely on what you want to
use it for. We basically offer two adapters: the
DCB II for compact cameras and the TLS APO
for DSLR cameras. The former is ideal for those

who are mainly out birding but would also like
the option of quickly getting a camera set up
for a photo if something interesting happens.
The latter, on the other hand, enables keen
nature photographers to take outstanding
photos with an entire system designed around
taking great photos. Both adapter systems
provide an impressive focal length range, with
the new ATX/STX spotting scopes starting at
about 750 mm and going well over 3,000 mm,
depending on the camera.
What subjects are particular favorites and are there any subjects that are particularly suitable for beginners to practice on?
DF: Brightly colored birds like bee-eaters
and bluebirds are very photogenic and will
always be loved by digiscopers. Shorebirds
are another great subject, albeit for a very
different reason. It never hurts to have a little
video of hard to identify species, but the best
practice targets are often just the birds on a
bird feeder, the ducks in a local park, or the
zebras in a zoo.
What role does sharing experiences play in digiscoping?
DF: For a start, digiscoping doesn’t have to be
something you do on your own. It’s a hobby that
you can arrange to enjoy with lots of other
people. Exchanging information is an important
aspect for many digiscopers, whereby they
share information not only about the best shots,
but also about the best places and how to
improve their technique. This is done very often
via the Internet, with lots of digiscopers choosing
to share their photos on social networks like
Facebook or on their own blogs.

HONING YOUR SKILLS
TIP #1No matter whether you are using a digital compact,
system, or DSLR camera, you should play around
with it to find the best performance settings for
your setup. It is definitely worthwhile exploring your
camera’s features, including ISO, aperture priority,
countdown timers, and focus settings. Furthermore,
a good tripod – ideally in combination with a stable
spotting scope rail – is most often a basic require-
ment for producing good images.
TIP #2Ease yourself in slowly. Choose subjects that are within
close range for your first photos, and use the lowest
focal length possible. The reason for this is simple –
the larger the focal length you use, the more suscep-
tible your photos are to movement and the more likely
it is that your images will be blurred. As you develop a
better feel for the equipment, you can try varying the
magnification and try out longer distances, but as the
distances increase, the effect of heat shimmer and
air impurity will become increasingly critical.
TIP #3Animals are often on the move, making it difficult to
focus the shot when they suddenly appear. If you are
waiting somewhere for something to happen, try to
predict the distance at which an animal may appear
and pre-focus your digiscoping setup. That way, when
an animal does appear, you will just need to correct
little differences in focus and you are ready to go. This
is particularly useful for larger birds like gulls and
vultures that follow regular lines of flight. If, however,
you have an animal sitting still, you will typically want
to make sure the eye is in perfect focus. Using live
view (and a digital zoom function) can be very useful
to tweak the focus and get the sharpness you want.
TIP #4Try out different viewing angles. Most birders start by
taking photos of birds in classic profile shots, but if
you want to challenge yourself, you might want to try
digiscoping rare, shy, or fast-moving species. Another
somewhat more artistic challenge is to try to find unusual
angles to capture interesting photos of other subjects,
such as butterflies, frogs, and lizards. After all, it is
precisely by adopting an uncommon viewing angle that
you will add a particularly exciting touch to your pictures.

How can we make our products even better? This is precisely the question that staff in our many
departments rack their brains over. What do we need to change to make our products easier to use?
Which materials are sturdy and feel nice? How do we get as close as possible to achieving perfect
optics? The way these issues are tackled is what distinguishes SWAROVSKI OPTIK’s products
from many others. Ultimately, it’s not about improving individual aspects, but about always enhancing
the whole product. After all, anyone who opts for a quality product from SWAROVSKI OPTIK should
simply expect the best.

“You have to imagine product development at SWAROVSKI OPTIK as being – figuratively speaking – like interlocking cogs. One leads on to the other. At the end of the process you have a product whose optical attributes, ergonomic design, and materials are in perfect harmony. The process of creating our products involves merging future-oriented technology and traditional manufacture to form a whole.”

PERFECTION REVEALED IN OPTICAL PERFORMANCEThe centerpiece of every SWAROVSKI OPTIK product is its optics. Different usage requirements place high demands on our research and development team. SWAROVSKI OPTIK follows a strategy aimed at making its mark with a perfectly harmonious total package. An excellent example of this in terms of optical performance is SWAROVISION technology, which makes the EL binoculars and ATX/STX spotting scopes the top products on the market.

STANDARD Color casts occur without optimized coatings
FIELD FLATTENER LENSES These produce a virtually flat image.
This means that even the finest structures and smallest details are
reproduced with razor-sharp clarity right up to the periphery.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Edge-to-edge sharpness supports totally
comfortable observation across the whole field of view. This saves
time refocusing, and details can be captured at lightning speed.
HIGH DEFINITION Lots of products are labeled “HD,” but what
does this mean in terms of optical performance? In the case of EL
and SLC binoculars and the ATX/STX and ATS/STS spotting scopes,
it means highly innovative optical design, combined with fluoride-
containing lenses that minimize interference from color fringing.
This enables maximum color fidelity and leads to a significant
improvement in resolution and contrast. SWAROVSKI OPTIK can
then achieve a new, pioneering HD standard that is second to none.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? The high-definition optical system
produces an extremely high-contrast image with natural colors
and razor-sharp outlines. This enables you to make out crucial
details even better.
100% FIELD OF VIEW EVEN FOR THOSE WHO WEAR GLASSES The
biggest challenge facing SWAROVSKI OPTIK is how to combine the
biggest possible field of view and an edge-to-edge sharp image. If
it works, we can view it as a perfect optical achievement that those
who wear glasses can fully benefit from too.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? A large field of view is absolutely key
to success in a rapidly changing viewing situation. The benefit,
particularly in poor light conditions, is that you can identify details
much more easily. The mechanism for individually adjusting the
twist-in eyecups that SWAROVSKI OPTIK offers with its binoculars
and spotting scopes guarantees the best possible optical quality
for everyone.
OPTIMIZED COATINGS The enhanced lens and prism coatings
(SWAROBRIGHT, SWAROTOP, SWARODUR) give noticeably
better color reproduction, combined with even greater transmission.
SWAROCLEAN, the coating on the outer surface of the lens,
provides a non-stick finish.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Viewing experiences are even more
impressive, even at twilight, and cleaning the lenses becomes
significantly easier.

WITH JUST ONE HAND The zoom ring’s new position, now immediately
behind the focusing ring, makes it even easier to handle.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? You’re now equipped, thanks to
ATX/STX spotting scopes, for moments where every second
counts, for instance if a plover appears at the coast for a brief
moment, before soaring into the air.
Only the combination of optical performance and perfect ergonomic design can provide maximum viewing comfort.
PERFECTION REFLECTED IN ERGONOMIC DESIGN
EL WRAP-AROUND GRIP The EL family of binoculars are in a class
of their own. One reason for this is the legendary and unique wrap-
around grip. All the primary parts are manufactured from high-
quality light alloys and give the products a low, balanced weight.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? This particularly ergonomic design
means the binoculars fit perfectly into your hand. As a result, you
have, in the truest sense of the phrase, everything at hand – in just
one hand.
ERGONOMIC PRODUCT DESIGN For binoculars and spotting scopes
alike, every one of our products must stand out for being particu-
larly user friendly. They will always be comfortable to use and to
carry even after a long period of time.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Greater viewing comfort. A secure grip
for comfortable handling over a long period of time. And above all,
a lot of enjoyment because your SWAROVSKI OPTIK product feels
really good to hold.
ATX/STX SYSTEM CONCEPT A brand-new modular design offers
unimaginable possible uses, catering to personal preferences
and different situations. This is because the performance of
ATX/STX spotting scopes can be changed for the first time via
the size of the objective lens, marking the scope’s reinvention.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? The modular system provides you with
different zoom ranges, depending on what you’re using it for. Not
to mention that the scope can be used extremely quickly, as the
zoom and focusing rings are arranged next to each other. The
modular design also allows you to store or carry the objective and
eyepiece components separately.

NATURE CONSERVATION PROJECTS
SWAROVSKI OPTIK attaches huge importance to showing respect for
and protecting nature and the animal world. Environmental awareness
is deeply rooted in our company philosophy. Our involvement in
nature and species conservation projects, as well as partnerships
with selected organizations is our contribution to preserving habitats
and protecting endangered animal species.
Visit WWW.SWAROVSKIOPTIK.COM for an overview of our nature
conservation projects.
SUPPORTING THE SOCIABLE LAPWINGSWAROVSKI OPTIK has joined forces with the RSPB (Royal
Society for the Protection of Birds) as a “Species Champion” as
part of BirdLife International’s “Preventing Extinctions Programme.”
SWAROVSKI OPTIK is the only optical manufacturer involved so far,
and is providing ongoing support for an initial period of three years
by sponsoring the Sociable Lapwing.
This bird species is indigenous to the Eurasian steppes region
(Kazakhstan and the adjoining Russian regions) and migrates to
the Middle East, north-east Africa, and northern India in winter. For
reasons that are as yet unexplained, the population has seen its
number drop by more than 90% in the last 25 years. The Sociable
Lapwing has been on the International Union for Conservation of
Nature (IUCN) list of endangered animal species since 2003, and is
at the highest level of risk.
COLORFUL PUFFLEG PROJECT (COLOMBIA)The Colorful Puffleg (Eriocnemis mirabilis) is one of the most
mysterious and also, unfortunately, most seriously endangered
species of hummingbird on the American continent. Its habitat
is restricted to a small, extremely wet area of the rainforest in
western Colombia.
In collaboration with the organizations “American Bird Conservancy”
and “ProAves Colombia,” SWAROVSKI OPTIK is instrumental in
protecting the endangered Colorful Puffleg from extinction, as
a mere 50 to 250 birds still exist. As part of the project,
SWAROVSKI OPTIK funded the purchase of 2,000 hectares of
land where the Colorful Puffleg makes its home alongside another
16 endangered bird species, two endangered species of frog, as
well as other birds, amphibians, butterflies, and plants, many of
which are exclusive to this area.
