letterfrom theeditorJennifer [email protected]

Im the ultimate skeptic.

I have a hard time with people who say theyre psychic or in touch with the spiritual world. Intuitives give me pause. Feng shui, you say? Sounds delicious... So I question everything. If youre the real deal, prove it. If I think youre successful, then maybe Ill come around to your point of view. If not, at least Im entertained for a bit. Needless to say as editor of a healthy living magazine I meet a lot of proponents of these types of beliefs. And despite being skeptical, I always try to have an open mind. In fact, I never dismiss anything outright; I just need a bit of convincing before I get on board with whatever belief or healing modality you ascribe to. So imagine my surprise when I met Jesse Martinez of Mystical Earth Gallery (MEG), Appleton. Despite being a healer and psychic, he feels the same way I do about these things. His skeptical attitude, rather than give me pause, just made me all the more intrigued. During our conversation he offered to give me a psychic reading. I havent taken him up on his offer as of this writing, but perhaps I will. (Curiosity killed the cat, and all that) Read more about what he and the folks at MEG have to offer starting on page 50. One thing I know for sure is that were in the last weeks of summer before school begins. Talk to any parent and youll soon learn the anticipation he or she feels in the days leading up to the first day of school is akin to that of waking up on Christmas morning. (Of course, talk to any school-age child

and their attitude is usually the opposite.) Of course I love my kids. And I love the care-free days of summer just as much as they do. But around this time theyre ready for something more. Schedules and structured learning beckon. They do well with those things, as do I. The takeaway? Savor the remaining days of summer. Take each day as it comes without thinking too far ahead. Back to the grind will be here soon enough. Peace,

Jen

Dealing with genital hyperhidrosisBy Guy Kitchell Genital sweating is not something most people are comfortable talking about. But the reality is that millions of men and women are affected by it. The good news is that not only do we talk about genital sweating we also treat it. Aside from the embarrassment and the discomfort, genital sweating can lead to chafing, rashes, odor and even infection. Excessive genital sweating is actually a skin disease called genital hyperhidrosis,

(groin sweating)and it is hereditary. Chances are that someone else in your family has it. Many things can exacerbate genital hyperhidrosis: Exercise Anxiety Menopause Stress Hormone imbalance Heat and humidity The bodys nervous system sends strong messages to some peoples genitals when they are nervous or excited, which can produce a lot of moisture. Sometimes, the nervous system becomes confused and keeps sending the message to produce moisture long after it should. Many people find this moisture (and the odor) embarrassing. This can make it difficult to interact with other people outside of the home. Not only is it embarrassing, but it causes discomfort, blisters, peeling skin and unfortunately odor. Treating your groin with a regular deodorant or antiperspirant can help a little bit in minimizing the odor and wetness, but these products are made for the underarms, which have much thicker skin. It takes a specialized product to gently and effectively treat the groin and protect it from skin rashes and over-drying. Luckily, there are new ways to treat this problem. You can purchase an aluminumfree antiperspirant serum for the genitals to stop the sweating, or you can purchase underwear sweat pads.Guy Kitchell is with Klima Health Solutions, 6621-B Century Ave., Middleton. Klima specializes in natural products and clinical strength products for many ailments like hyperhidrosis, body odor, acne, keratosis, eczema and more. For more information, call toll free 877.295.5462, or visit www.klimadeodorant.com. Discover the talents of therapy dogs

M

any people think of therapy dogs as guide dogs leading the blind, or dogs sitting with seniors at an assisted living facility. While therapy dogs are responsible for these jobs, they do so much more including acting as a trusted companion for someone diagnosed with cancer. Although many therapy dogs are specially trained in their roles, just about any well-mannered dog can serve in a therapeutic capacity. People may be surprised at the many assistance roles dogs can play. Help children read: Dogs are not judgmental and offer no criticism, which makes them prime helpers for children who

need help learning to read or who have stage fright. Children can read stories to dogs that listen quietly and build up their confidence levels. Some schools and libraries even institute programs where dogs are invited as the audience to student readers. seizure alert: Some dogs are trained to alert epileptics and those with seizure disorders to an upcoming episode, although this method of detection is not always foolproof. In general, seizure dogs provide companionship and security to a person during and after an episode. Cancer therapy: Getting diagnosed with cancer can be a stressful event. Going through chemotherapy and radiation can take its toll on the body. Cancer patients often need all of the love and affection they can get or sometimes just a quiet companion. In a program like Pets for Pals, therapy dogs sit with cancer patients, often sensing what ill people need. Dogs have the innate ability to love unconditionally. Having a dog around gives patients a different topic of conversation other than their health and treatment. Petting a dog has been known to lower blood pressure and reduce stress as well. Helping hands: Individuals who are handicapped may rely on dogs to do tasks around the house, from turning on lights to grabbing remote controls. Some dogs help companionswww.naturespathwaysonline.com

move around a space by offering stability and a handhold. security: Dogs have long been used as security guards. But even if a dog isnt a trained guard, he or she can alert if something is amiss in the house or if someone is at the door or outside of the home. Individuals who live alone can benefit from the companionship and level of security that dogs provide. Many therapy and service dogs start their lives as stray dogs or shelter dogs. Some training facilities actually seek out calm, well-mannered shelter dogs and give them a new lease on life as a persons helper or companion.SOURCE: Metro Creative Connection

Hypnosis for a beautiful birthing experienceBy Trish Poole Dr. Julie Wyss says her first pregnancy was not what she expected. She and her husband, Dr. Skip Wyss, sought out natural healthcare and planned as much as possible. As educated pediatric chiropractors, they thought they were in good position to experience a positive pregnancy, and then labor and delivery. But the pregnancy didnt progress as her obstetrician wanted so he started interventions to speed it along. There were no relaxing thoughts or calming words from our medical staff, just unneeded stress, fear, tension and worry, Julie says. I wanted the complete opposite for our second pregnancy. She chose two wonderful midwifes and the Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing for the delivery. I led them through the HypnoBirthing classes, helping the couple through hypnosis to let go of the past trauma and fears (fear-tension-pain syndrome) that Julie had from her past delivery experience and life in general.

I am proud to say that with Trishs help, and the help of hypnosis, we were able to have the non-medicated birth experience we wanted, Julie says. A healthy baby boy was born (15 hours later) into a calm, loving environment. Breckin was adjusted just minutes

Hypnosis was able to give me the birth experience that my husband, baby and i wanted; more relaxing, and a calm and pain-free delivery.after being born into his fathers hands, and has never been healthier. Hypnosis was able to give me the birth experience that my husband, baby and I wanted; more relaxing, and a calm and pain-free delivery. In our office we stress how important the birth experience is because we see newborns, infants and toddlers all day and can tell from the childs spine, health and behavior what kind of a birth the Mom went through. A womans body is created with birth in mind. Yet women fear it and doctors medicate it. Natural, calm births dont make for good drama so we rarely hear about those but they do happen and they are possible as the Wyss can attest. HypnoBirthing focuses on using the state of hypnosis (kind of like the state between awake and asleep) to create positive expectation; especially a calm, relaxed sensation during birthing, as well as the ability to transfer numbness or, what we call in hypnosis, glove anesthesia, to any part of her body to numb out any discomfort. There are four meetings with Mom and her birthing companion to practice, train and eliminate any fear blocks to birthing naturally. Focus is given to eliminate the fear-tension-pain syndrome, to teach the birthing companion how to help the mother go deeper into relaxation during birthing, to creating glove anesthesia that she can use anywhere on her body before, during and after birthing and to plan the birth as well as transform any post-birth concerns to positive expectations. Heres another womans story about how hypnosis for natural childbirth has helped her: HypnoBirthing has impacted my life in many magical ways. The biggest transformation took place with my fears about giving birth. I had a lot of fears from my first pregnancy. Through HypnoBirthing, working with Trish, the exercises, meditating and the daily affirmations, I was able to heal my fears and believe in myself, says Christa Rose. The confidence I gained allowed me to relax and enjoy being pregnant. I was nowww.naturespathwaysonline.com

longer getting caught in the fears of labor that took me away from the moments of life itself. When my water broke, I smiled and enjoyed every second of it. I even giggled to myself about how I should tell my boyfriend its time. It felt fun and exciting, and I feel thats very important. I also felt spiritually closer to God and the angels. Another beautiful thing of HypnoBirthing was the depth my boyfriend and I connected on through HypnoBirthing practice and classes. It brought out a voice in him which had such a tender pureness that held my most innocent vulnerability and trust. Healing and bonding started to

grow between the two of us. I dont believe this would have taken place anywhere else but HypnoBirthing. It is so healthy for the baby, which gave me peace and strength. My birth plan helped me greatly. I didnt have to worry about a thing, knowing all the nurses were on the same page through reading my plan. I used the affirmation cd while I was in labor and found it very helpful. The explicit beauty of my experience with Trish and HypnoBirthing has been long lasting. I still hold the confidence as I did 2 years ago when I birthed my son. That is such a gift! I recommend HypnoBirthing to everyone who wants a calm birth.Patricia Trish Poole, CH, EFT-CC, Reiki Master Teacher uses a combination of powerful mind-body-spirit techniques to help her clients and students break through blocks, heal and accomplish their goals. The healing power of a funeral

By Nancy Freier recently attended the funeral services of one of my favorite uncles. I knew it would be a big day emotionally speaking and I guess, like in most families, there are rifts and ridges between the family members that need healing. As I drove to the church, I said a prayer asking to know what to say and to whom to say it. We celebrated his life and amid the emotional windy and rainy day, said our goodbyes as we laid him to rest. I looked around at all who were gathered there and also felt the spirit of those who had previously passed. Grandma and Grandpas graves were just down the way. We filled their empty urn with fresh daisies from my uncles casket spray. Another Uncle had lost his wife some 10 years earlier and he looked thin and frail. I could still see the grief in his eyes. My dad, the eldest brother, died three years ago. My cousin (whose father was being laid to rest) was gone too soon in 1999 of breast cancer. As we were gathered under the old oak tree (how perfect, I thought), led in prayer by a minister, my eyes welled up and I couldnt stop the tears. Where had the time gone? Here was a man whose life was well spent, his widow deeply mourning her loss. Their son, my cousin, I didnt recognize. I hadnt seen him in years. He came over to me and we cried together. He told me he forgot how pretty I was. Sweet. Another cousin I hadnt seen in years sat with me as we ate dinner after the burial. I learned some things about him I hadntwww.naturespathwaysonline.com

it was a surge of healing that came as a tidal wave in my heart. it was palpable. We all felt it.known before and we connected on a very cool level. I came away feeling I had gained a new friend, but was somewhat sad it took so long to unfold. Where does life go? What had stopped us from connecting earlier? Does life get in the way while were living our lives? My emotional body was all over the place. I understood clearly why people hate going to funerals. Raw emotions run rampant that must be dealt with, and I came away with far more than mascara-smeared eyes and wet tissues in my pocket. I had experienced spurts of growth and gained much wisdom that was just as free-flowing as the tears. Another Uncle whom I had always avoided because of our different religious views was there from Michigan. I found myself automatically walking right up to him to share our condolences. We embraced, and whatever ill feeling that was there before dissolved in that moment. I pretty much stayed around him the rest of the day, praying, even singing with him as we visited an Aunt with Down Syndrome in her nursing home. Yes, I said, singing! And there was another Uncle who I had always felt didnt like me and the inner voice inside my head was opening my heart to see him differently. I sat at the same table with him during the funeral luncheon, and somehow found things to say that engaged his interest and sparked some happy childhood memories he had of his brothers while growing up. All who were sitting at the table reminisced about the fun things they did earlier in life. I felt the spirit of my dad and my grandparents present, who seemed to breathe life into this moment of sharing memories. I saw my uncle look over to me several times and tell me stories about my dad, something I have never experienced

before with him. A miracle had happened here this day. A funeral, yes, but it was much, much more. It was a surge of healing that came as a tidal wave in my heart. It was palpable. We all felt it. I believe I buried my old hurts then and there, along with my uncle. Driving home I cried a little bit more, but this time it was for the wasted time spent in unforgiveness. The rain stopped and the sun peeked through as I made a new commitment to waste no more time mourning any loss, but to step life up a notch, and get on with the business of living it to the very fullest. This sounds much more appealing than holding grievances and grudges that eat away at the soul like cancer. And, when the time comes for my funeral, may the people gathered there agree that I lived a beautifully awesome life. What more can one hope for?Nancy Freier is a professionally-trained Essential Feng Shui consultant and intuitive healer. Her passion is helping people live a happier, more fulfilling life. You will be inspired to take time to slow down so you can reconnect to your spiritual heart, or inner sun, and achieve your personal goals. Deb works hard to connect with the community and others involved in the natural health industry to be able to offer special workshops to go along with yoga classes. My favorite class was Yoga in the Gardens in Oshkosh. There is no better way to connect with earth and your spiritual self than to be doing yoga outside smelling beautiful flowers at the Paine Art Center. Another great example is the self-guided class with drummer Preach Freedom from Rusted Root. Although it is great to do the special workshops offered, I really

enjoy going to the studio which is a gorgeous green studio. Deb worked hard to maintain the beautiful brick architecture, while at the same time adding a cork floor and zoned heat to maintain eco-friendliness. You truly get the feel of calm and serenity while you are doing your yoga practice. The greatest part is that I am certainly not an expert yogi and Deb and her other instructors understand that everyone is at different levels. During my Vinyasa (heated, more active) yoga classes she would come around and adjust you as needed. You also have to try the chanting yoga classes as the energy with all the students combined is unbelievable. You just have to experience it! From restorative to breathing, to classes with more movement, there is truly a class for everyone. Deb also offers private classes for those looking for more individual support. Private energy work is also offered. Whatever level you are, or if youre someone looking for something new to try to re-connect with yourself and wellbeing, Inner Sun Yoga is the place to do it. There is also still time to sign up for the Summer Yoga retreat at Camp Lakotah on Little Hills Lake in Wautoma Aug. 12-13. Check out the Web site at www.innersunyogastudio.com for more information. Then it hits you: this place carries a lot of stuff! Youll find nutritional supplements, gluten-free bread, natural shampoos and beauty supplies, goats milk and cheese, and an amazing selection of fresh olive oils that are probably the most delicious form of antioxidants around. Whats the big deal about hair?

WHair loss in womenHair loss is a common problem for women, which can be distressing. Hereditary hair loss is a medical condition that affects about 30 million American women. in quality-of-life studies, women experiencing hair loss reported a higher incidence of behavior that interfered with their daily lives including a significant loss of selfesteem, being introverted, feeling less attractive and tense feelings in public places. the average person loses 50 to 80 hairs per day.

By Mark P. Brettingen hy do people put so much energy and time into what is on top of their head? Why do they spend so much time focusing on what is no longer on top of their head? Think about why hair causes so much emotional turmoil in our minds. It makes us feel great or, in contrast, it makes us upset. Its just hair, right? Today lets delve into this at a deeper level. How we perceive ourselves and how we feel about how others perceive us, is fueled by a mere glance in a mirror. We look at our hair, or our facial features, with hopes of feeling good about that reflection. Bygenetic syndrome or hormone-related disorder. the pattern of hair thinning (localized or diffused) can determine the reason for hair loss.

Hair loss in menHereditary hair loss is a medical condition that affects about 50 million American men. Hair loss can be inherited from either the mothers or fathers side of the family. A man has a 50 percent chance of experiencing hair loss by his 50th birthday. this hereditary condition, clinically termed androgenetic alopecia, is characterized by a receding hairline as well as a loss of hair on top of the scalp. treatment options that include topical minoxidil and oral finasteride have been shown to help in the regrowth of hair or slow hair loss. Hair transplantation is another treatment option that offers a permanent form of hair replacement using surgery to move some existing scalp hair to bald or thinning parts.SOURCE: American Academy of Dermatologywww.naturespathwaysonline.com

Youth Leader Muzatko a Goodwill Outstanding AchieverBy Karen Kramer A youth leader from its GLBT Partnership program in Green Bay has been named the Outstanding Achiever for Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin. Eighteen-year-old Abbey Muzatko, who is a recent Preble High School graduate, was chosen for this honor because of her work in helping to establish a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) youth community in Green Bay through Goodwills Harmony Caf. The GLBT Partnership is an ongoing leadership development and support group for young people ages 14-18 who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT), as well as allies, regardless of sexual identity, orientation or gender expression. Muzatko is a member of the steering team that began working in October 2010 to form a GLBT Partnership in Green Bay. She continues to serve as a youth leader for that group, presenting programs on everything from gay animals, anti-bullying campaigns, to Riot Grrrl music and culture. She has also participated in Pride Alive at the booth for the GLBT Partnership and in community service projects through her schools Gay Straight Alliance. Abbey is a truly remarkable teen humble, intelligent, progressive and extremely motivated, said Deanna Tappy,

program coordinator for Harmony CafGreen Bay. She is one of our outstanding youth leaders. Muzatko is also a talented artist. This fall, she will be attending The Art Institute of Chicago where she will pursue her passion for painting one that she shared with the community during her art show, titled To Be Translucent, at Green Bays Harmony

Caf earlier this year. Her art presented the female figure as a matrix, commenting on perceptions of gender, sexuality and familial connections. Muzatkos leadership in the GLBT community and her artistic endeavors recently earned her a national 4-year, full scholarship from the Point Foundation. With this scholarship, she is required to create a community service project. She already has plans to start a nonprofit in Chicago to provide a safe space that would serve as an art studio, classroom and gallery for GLBT youth. Any 18-year-old with this much under her belt is impressive enough on paper, but to really understand why Abbey deserves being named Goodwills Outstanding Achiever, youd have to meet her face to face, Tappy said. Her intellect, commitment and attitude are impressive. She has read the work of Albert Camus and spoken about her motivation and moral responsibility to her peers and the GLBT community. Muzatko said her experiences with Goodwill and Harmony Cafs GLBT Partnership have helped her become more of a leader, and a better leader. She credits Tappy for

pushing her to succeed and supporting her. All of us at Harmony Caf and Goodwill are very proud of Abbey and her accomplishments, Tappy said. She has had a positive impact on the GLBT youth community in Green Bay, and will surely continue this work through her efforts in Chicago. Each month, Goodwill NCW selects a program participant or volunteer like Muzatko for its Outstanding Achiever recognition. Honorees come from one of Goodwills 22 store communities, its Menasha campus or its Ralph B. Shiner Center in Appleton. Keith Wilk, COO of Programs & Services at Goodwill, noted this award provides the means to recognize the strides that individuals have made, in part, because of their involvement with programs through Goodwill. Each honoree receives a certificate of achievement and Goodwill merchandise.

It covers 35 counties and includes 22 retail stores and training centers in communities from Manitowoc to La Crosse, and as far north as Rice Lake and Rhinelander. Expert answers to your health and wellness questions

Calories, menopausal weight gain and magazine fitnessweight accumulates in these areas is because of the effect that estrogen has on the body. However, as you reach your menopausal years, your estrogen levels drop. As a result, the ratio of estrogen to testosterone drops as well, and, low and behold, you end up storing that extra weight where men tend to gain their weight specifically the mid-section. Im sure youre not all that thrilled to hear this, but its just a fact of life. Naturally, most women want to know what they can do about it, but aside from preventing weight gain in the first place (which can be difficult), there isnt much you can do. Just be diligent with your diet and exercise as you approach menopause, and try to accept the age-related changes that all of our bodies go through. Question: Can I get your thoughts on all of the nutrition and fitness information that you find in the popular magazines? What do you think of Fitness, Runners World, Mens Health and the like? answer: Thats a great question, especially since many people get all of their health and wellness information from these sources, and others. Ive written for several different magazines, and Im on the advisory board for one publication, and I can say that the content is probably better than its ever been. Years ago, most of the articles were full of myths, inaccuracies and marketing hype. And dont get me wrong, you can still find this in certain articles in some of the most popular magazines. That said, many publications now hire editors that have solid credentials in nutrition,

By Karmen Nenahlo Question: I have a simple question for you how many calories does one need to eat to lose weight? answer: That does sound like a simple question, and I could give you a simple answer, but it might not be all that accurate. It would be easy to say that the average female should take in about 1,200-1,500 calories to lose weight, and maybe 1,8002,100 for males, but that doesnt mean that these numbers will necessarily work for you! The ability to lose weight depends on a number of variables, including your resting metabolic rate, your activity level (both general daily activities and exercise), and even the calories you burn while digesting food. These all factor into the expenditure side of the energy balance equation, which then helps to determine the intake side as well. If you want the best and most accurate calorie estimate, you need to take a personal inventory. Talk to a trainer about getting your resting metabolic rate tested, and then have him/ her determine how many calories you expend each day. This will go a long way to establishing a recommended calorie level for weight loss. Good luck! Question: Im smack dab in the middle of menopause and, as expected, I seem to be gaining weight. However, the weight seems to be finding its way to my mid-section, which is odd for me personally. Any logical explanation? answer: You might not want to hear this, but yes, there is a logical explanation. As youre probably aware, many women seem prone to gaining weight in their hip and butt areas. Part of the reason that26Natures Pathways | August 2011

fitness, or disease prevention and management, and they have researchers on staff as well. Plus, many editors want to see the sources that their writers use before they approve an article. Historically, the focus was always on selling magazines, and that hasnt really changed, but the magazines themselves have come to realize that wellresearched, accurate content does just that. If youre ever confused by something you read in a magazine, just ask a local expert (trainer, dietitian, or health professional) to give you their honest feedback. The power of color

I

By Teresa Van Lanen always find it interesting to figure out what draws us to certain colors and how we respond to certain colors over others. Color is studied not only in the artistic world, but also in the world of science, medicine and spiritual practice. So is it more than what strikes our fancy and can be used to balance ourselves on various planes? I will explore this idea in this article and expand on more ideas in next months article as well. Color is a big part of all of our everyday lives, even for the non-sighted or color challenged. Research has looked at color in more

We are all creative beings and that creativity feeds our spirit. Creativity can be a catalyst for positive change in your life. scientific detail to explain how this can be. I have read a few books on the topic including Healing with Color by Ted Andrews and Color Medicine by Charles Klotsche. These books reveal the healing properties of color through harmonic vibrational frequency. It is believed that the color frequencies can help with organ health along with balancing emotions. Treatments may include special healing properties through lights and color filters but also through the color in our clothing and our environment. This healing can be enhanced with other vibrations such as through musical tones. Each of the colors has it is own frequency from the violets on the low end of the wave length/frequency scale, to the reds at the higher end (ultraviolet to infrareds). Reading about this I reflected on an example of how color frequency affected some clients I worked with. Years ago I worked at a center where our whole team participated in a workshop to learn more about the use of color for emotional balance. The presenters believed that the color pink was a calming color. As a result of what we learned, the team decided to implement the painting of our calming room to pink. Much to our dissatisfaction, when the paint dried the color was a hot pink. And when clients used this room to calm, it gave the

reverse reaction. Considering the vibrational frequency of the hot pink color being so close to the highest end of the scale, I can see why the clients were anything but calm! Other related articles I have read have compared color frequencies with energetic chakra balancing/health. There are many references available to discuss this in more detail; one that I have referred to here is from Sonia Choquette called True Balance. You can wear or bring these colors into your life more often if you feel you are imbalanced or lacking in a certain chakra. Or, on the flip side, if your chakra is oversaturated, then you may wish to use less of this color on your person and/or environment. An example of this from my own life was during a turbulent relationship a few years back. I had many red accents and articles of clothing that I wore; basically shades of red surrounded me. As you can see on the following page, the color red is seen in our root chakra which deals with physical safety, security and grounding. Unbeknownst to me I was using this color to help balance this part of my life inwardly as it was unbalanced outwardly. As the relationship ended, I began to systematically replace the red in my environment with cooler tones. Reflecting back on this, although I deliberately chose colors at the time that appealed to me visually, I unconsciously had beenwww.naturespathwaysonline.com

tissue allowing the energy to be delivered precisely to where it will be most productive. Ultherapy triggers the bodys natural response mechanism, which is to rejuvenate tired collagen and supplement it with fresh, new collagen. Ultrasound energy has a proven track record, with use in medical imaging for over 50 years. In addition, the procedure has been cleared by the FDA after demonstrating safety in clinical studies, and tens of thousands of treatments have been performed worldwide without any significant adverse events. Full face and neck Ultherapy treatment takes 60 minutes and a partial face treatment can take as little as 30 minutes. After an Ultherapy treatment, improvements can begin immediately with some contraction and firming. Just as with building new muscle, however, the building of new collagen to lift and tone skin occurs gradually over the two to three months that follow treatment. Its a wonderful option for someone looking for a non-surgical way to counter the effects of gravity on the skin. For patients, there is some discomfort while the energy is being delivered, which is temporary and a signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated. A board-certified plastic surgeon will take measures to make the experience as pleasant as possible with a pain management program. Patients treated with Ultherapy still have fresh young collagen after a years time following the procedure. Yearly touch-up treatments can help keep pace with the aging process. The majority of patients only need one treatment, while those with a fair amount of laxity may need more than one treatment. Annual touch-up treatments can help slow down the rate of skin aging. There is a broad range of men and women who can benefit from Ultherapy, but typically those in their 30s and older are candidates. While this is not a replacement for surgery, there are many people who want some lifting, in order to look more refreshed and toned but are not ready for surgery. And then there are younger people who want to stay ahead of the game as well as those looking to prolong the effect of surgery.Dr. David Janssen is a board-certified plastic surgeon with Fox Valley Plastic Surgery, based in Oshkosh. The practice, co-owned by Dr. David Janssen and Dr. William Doubek, offers facial aesthetics, breast surgery, body contouring, advanced laser services, vein care, medical weight loss and MediSpa services. Customizing lawn care, organically

Y

By Lisa Reissmann our lawn is different than your neighbors, right? Why treat the lawn the same as everyone else on the block? A reputable lawn care company will always start out by taking sample cores of the lawn they are about to treat, and testing those samples to see what the soil needs to grow grass, and not all weeds. This test shows many things, and with the correct amendments added to the soil, you can get amazing results on the lawn! Most companies do not do this. Basically, whats ever on the back of the guys truck is whats going on your lawn. Sure, this saves them money, but does nothing to amend your soil. This is just putting a Band-Aid over the lawn, and when the treatments stop, the lawn becomes all weeds and bare spots. Some companies will do a soil test, but they charge for it, as well as any amendments the lawn needs separately to the treatment price. I dont get that either. I like to know what Im up against before I start a job. Customizing a lawn organically is difficult. It takes patience, both on the part of the lawn care provider as well as the customer. When you add amendments, you create a lot of growth. Some of that growth can be weeds. A true customized approach to lawn care is not only mixing fertilizers and amendments, but adding a high-quality grass seed as well. The thicker you can get a lawn, the more you choke out the weeds naturally. While this process does take time,

You simply cannot get a healthy lawn with using chemicals. Chemical lawn care is extremely dangerous to your health and that of your family and pets.

it is worth it in the end. Correcting the soil and thickening the turf makes your lawn healthy. You simply cannot get a healthy lawn with using chemicals. Chemical lawn care is extremely dangerous to your health and that of your family and pets. The organic transition does take patience. The results are proven, and last longer. The process becomes less and less expensive over time, because once you correct the soil, it is a matter of easy maintenance. Those chemical companies want to come out more and more, sometimes as much as seven times a year, just to fertilize! Do the math on that. Thats paying a bill for lawn care almost every three weeks. That is unnecessary! Call me and see what hundreds of people in the Fox Valley have already figured out: that going green is the only way to go!

Are you oxygen deprived?By Angela Saunders Are you fatigued? Stressed? Eating fast food more than you should? Are your thoughts cloudy and you feel run down? Nervous? Do you have a headache? Are you having trouble remembering things? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are most likely oxygen deprived. It happens to us all. You are not alone.

Why are we so deprived of oxygen when its everywhere?

There are many reasons we have trouble getting enough oxygen in our system. Among them is pollution which robs the air we breathe of oxygen. Second, did you know that food contains oxygen? Some fruits and vegetables are up to 50 percent oxygen

stress depletes oxygen because when we are stressed out, oxygen is required to produce the hormones and adrenaline that kick in.while less quality foods contain less than 15 percent oxygen. When the body assimilates low-oxygen foods, it has to use extra oxygen to convert them into energy. This means that the oxygen is not able to be used for things like blood flow, brain function and the immune system while youre digesting your favorite junk food. Oh, well. At least we know why we lack energy afterwards. Third, stress depletes oxygen because when we are stressed out, oxygen is required to produce the hormones and adrenaline that kick in. And finally, infection will of course deplete the oxygen reserve and make it harder for you to combat bacteria. These are a few of the reasons we do not or cannot get enough oxygen.

gently forces more oxygen to be absorbed by your body to make up for the unfortunate lack of it. Some people wait until they have a health crisis to try it, but if you keep your body refreshed with oxygen on a regular basis, you can hopefully avoid it having to get that far. At the very least, you can relieve that headache, improve your bad memory, feel calmer and fight off a cold. Its comforting to have options when it comes to your health. We can breathe easy about that...

What hope is there?

How can we get more of this valuable fuel to replete the inevitable deficit that our lives and environment create? There are many options, one of them being hyperbaric medicine. Its been around for a very long time (since the 1600s). It consists of simply breathing in pure oxygen while in a pressurized room or chamber. It

The right candy can be good for your teeth

IGo to School!SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL MASSAGE AND THERAPEUTIC BODYWORK

By Dr. William Twohig have been an active dentist for 35 years. One of the most frustrating problems dentists face is preventing or stopping decay. I have tried everything that has come along. Preaching brushing and flossing helped many people, while alienating more. The national brand toothpastes and mouth rinses should surely have stopped decay by now. Fluoride, which is now the standard for care, should have eliminated decay. Until now I have always had a portion of my clients who have recurring decay regardless of what we have tried. First we must look at the science behind decay. Certain bacteria in our mouths live on the refined carbohydrates such as sugar. Their by-products produce an acidic environment. This environment pulls the calcium molecules from your teeth resulting in decalcification and breakdown of the dental enamel. Thus decay.

Within six months, the harmful bacteria are totally eliminated from your mouth.Six years ago, I was introduced to mints, candies, gums and fluoride-free toothpaste that claimed to help eliminate tooth decay. To make a long story short, they worked! These products contain 100 percent xylitol, which is a natural product. It is found in birch trees and grasses. It is as sweet as sugar and has a low glycemic index which makes it safe for diabetics. When the decay-causing bacteria absorb the xylitol they cannot metabolize it and then die off without reproducing. Within six months, the harmful bacteria are totally eliminated from your mouth. Studies from the University of Michigan and University of Southern California have shown it to be effective. In Finland where xylitol has been used for years, 80 percent of high school graduates have no decay. In the U.S. the National Center for Health Statistics reports by age 17, 80 percent have had decay.

Strive for five

Children and adults need 6-8 grams of xylitol per day. It is best if broken up into 5 doses per day. Brush w/xylitol toothpaste 2x = 3-4 grams; a piece of gum or mint after every meal 3x = 3 grams, a piece of taffy, a sucker = 2 grams, chocolate, or granules (1 tsp. in a water bottle, and sipped throughout the day = 4 grams). The xylitol that you are using will also neutralize the acids in your

mouth to provide a pH that encourages beneficial bacteria to survive. Xylitol comes in many forms: gum, mints, chocolates, taffy, lollipops, candies and toothpaste. They are delicious. Shouldnt every dental office have a display area which looks like a candy store? Visit these leading Web sites to learn about xylitols benefits and where to purchase products: www.emeraldforestxylitol.com (A great source for U.S. xylitol made from birch trees) www.zellies.com (Dr. Ellie Phillips wrote the book Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye about Xylitols benefits) www.drjohns.com (Dr. John has a large variety of chocolates and candies) www.xlear.com (Makers of Spry products including baby gels and dry-mouth products) Check with your dentist or local natural health food stores and pharmacies. When purchasing products look for products which clearly show how many grams per serving and that they are 100 percent xylitol. Look for xylitol as the first ingredient and there should be no other sweeteners listed.
