since Daiveun Curry-Chapman tallied 19 over a pair of games during the 2010 campaign.

SUTTON HONORED AS BIG SKY POW• Junior Wes Su on was named the Big Sky ROOT SPORTS Defensive Player of the Week announced by

the conference offi ce on Monday following his performance in the Northern Arizona football team’s fi rst win of the season on 9/23 at Cal Poly.

• Su on led a Lumberjack defense that limited Cal Poly’s triple op on a ack to just 3.2 yards per carry in the 28-10 road victory. He registered seven tackles, including two tackles for a loss of fi ve yards. His biggest play of the game though came with six minutes le in the fourth quarter when he intercepted Cal Poly’s Khaleel Jenkins in the endzone to halt a Mustang drive that could have made it a two-pos-session game. Su on’s intercep on resulted in Jenkins’ fi rst pick of the season as NAU secured a win in its Big Sky opener.

• The weekly award is the fi rst of Su on’s career. For the season, through three games, Su on is second on the team with 20 total tackles.

HALT THE STREAK• NAU avoided its fi rst 0-3 start since 1971 by defea ng Cal Poly, 28-10, on Sept. 23 in San Luis Obispo,

Calif.• This is just the third 0-2 start during head coach Jerome Souers’ 20 years and fi rst since 2006.

CELEBRATE SOUERS• On Sept. 11, NAU Vice President for Intercollegiate Athle cs Dr. Lisa Campos announced that this

season would be head coach Jerome Souers’ fi nal as the head coach of the NAU football program. The announcement was made to ensure that Souers’ leadership and service to NAU would be celebrated throughout the remainder of the season.

• Currently in his 20th season, Souers is the longest tenured head coach in conference history.• At the me of the announcement, Souers’ career win total sat at 112 and his conference win total was

76, both of which are tops in Big Sky history.

WELCOME, MR. YOUNG• Making his NAU debut on Sept. 2, junior Cory Young made quite the impression, rushing for 115 yards

on only 11 carries, averaging 10.5 yards per carry. He accounted for two of NAU’s three touchdowns in its 62-24 loss to Arizona in the Lumberjacks’ 2017 season opener.

• On his fi rst carry, the Boise State transfer sprinted 58 yards untouched that ed the score at 7-7 less than six minutes into the game. Young later added a seven-yard touchdown run that brought NAU within 21-14.

• Along with sophomore Joe Logan, who also tallied 101 rushing yards, Young was the fi rst Lumberjack to record 100 rushing yards against an FBS opponent since Zach Bauman did so against UNLV in 2012.

• Young posted the highest rushing total in the conference in Week 1.

DON’T TAKE OFFENSE, TUCSON• Despite suff ering a loss in their fi rst game of the season, the ’Jacks put their Pac-12 rival - and the rest

of the Big Sky - on no ce with their off ensive explosion. NAU posted 562 yards of total off ense, its highest total since at least 2000 against an FBS opponent, against Arizona and leads the conference in total off ense a er one week.

• Individually, sophomore quarterback Case Cookus ranks second in the conference in passing yards (306) and senior Elijah Marks ranks third in receiving yards (147). The running back tandem of junior

Cory Young (115.0) and sophomore Joe Logan (101.0) ranks fi rst and second in rushing yards per game and the only two conference rushers with more total yards have played two games already.

FBS MARKS THE SPOT• Senior Elijah Marks loves the bright lights of the FBS as his two-best career

games have been against in-state Pac-12 foes Arizona State and Arizona over the last two seasons.

• One year a er se ng a career-high with 174 receiving yards and a touch-down versus Arizona State, the Goodyear, Ariz. product once again showed what the big boys missed out on with a standout game against Arizona on Sept. 2. Marks led the ’Jacks with 147 receiving yards on eight recep ons for his second-highest yard total of his career.

SEASON OPENER HISTORY• A er their 62-24 loss to Arizona on Sept. 2, the Lumberjacks are now 9-11 in

season openers under head coach Jerome Souers.• The 2017 season opener was the 10th me in 20 years that NAU has kicked

off the season with either Arizona or Arizona State.

NAU VS. THE FBS• The Lumberjacks are 8-52 all- me versus FBS/I-A opponents since 1957 and

have lost fi ve straight since defea ng UNLV, 17-14, on Sept. 8, 2012 in Las Vegas.

YEAR 20• Jerome Souers enters his 20th season as the head coach of the Northern

Arizona football team. He is the longest tenured head coach in the Big Sky Conference by a wide margin as Cal Poly’s Tim Walsh is the next closest as he is beginning his ninth season. In all of the FCS, he is ed for the seventh-lon-gest tenured head coach.

• Last season, Souers earned career win No. 112 and became the winningest coach in conference history on Nov. 5 in the process when the Lumberjacks defeated Weber State on the road, 33-20.

• In his fi rst 19 years, NAU has made three FCS/I-AA playoff appearances and has a total of 12 winning seasons.

THE CHEF IS BACK• Coming off an injury shortened 2016 season, sophomore Case Cookus is

healthy and Lumberjack fans are ready to see what he has cooking in the kitchen. Cookus, the 2015 FCS STATS Na onal Freshman of the Year and CFPA Na onal Performer of the Year among numerous other accolades, started just four games last season before suff ering an injury on Sept. 24 versus East-ern Washington.

• In just 15 career games, Cookus already ranks in the top 10 or is approaching the top 10 in a number of all- me categories. His 50 touchdowns entering the season rank fi h in school history while he should crack the top 10 in both passing yards and total off ense within the fi rst game or two this season.

• Buoyed by an incredible 50-to-6 touchdown-to-intercep on ra o, Cookus enters the season leading all quarterbacks (FBS included) in career passing effi ciency (184.70).

EASY E• With the way he has dominated the scene, the rest of the Big Sky will be glad

to know that senior Emmanuel Butler has just one more season of eligibility le .

• Butler recorded 1,003 yards receiving last season, signifi cant given the fact that with that performance he etched his named into the NAU record books becoming the fi rst player in school history to notch mul ple 1,000 receiving yard seasons.

• Butler is just ge ng started with the record books, and by the end of the sea-son he could be si ng all by himself on top of NAU’s career receiving charts. At his pace, Butler should eclipse the all- me receiving yards, recep ons and touchdowns records in addi on to jumping into the top 10 in points scored and all-purpose yards.

• Entering his fi nal season, Butler ranks fi h in yards with 2,446 and eighth in recep ons with 146. He needs just three touchdown recep ons to break that record as well. Clarence Moore, a 2015 NAU Hall of Fame inductee, holds the school records for yards and touchdowns.

SYCAMORES NO MORE• The NAU coaching staff has three new faces on the staff this season, including

a pair who arrived in Flagstaff very familiar with each other. New off ensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Sheppard and special teams co-ordinator Gary Hyman served on the same staff last season at Indiana State.

• Sheppard coached the previous four years at Indiana State in a similar ca-pacity while also serving as the assistant head coach. As the Sycamores’ of-fensive coordinator, Sheppard coached the team to a near-even split in their total off ense. Of Indiana State’s 4,039 yards of off ense, 2,698 came on the ground and 2,417 came through the air. He was also part of the 2014 staff that guided the Sycamores to their fi rst FCS Playoff appearance since 1983.

• Sheppard also has s nts at Willame e, Tulsa, New Mexico State and UCLA.• As for Hyman, he was the special teams coordinator and ght ends coach

at Indiana State in 2016 - his lone season with the Sycamores. He brings a wealth of experience to NAU as he also has stops at Kansas, Texas A&M, South Dakota School of Mines, UTEP and Delta College.

• Before entering the coaching ranks, Hyman was an assistant strength and condi oning coach at USC in 2009, a season in which the Trojans won nine games and picked up an Emerald Bowl victory. He also has bowl experience at UTEP (2010 New Mexico Bowl) and Texas A&M (2014 Liberty Bowl).

MAKING HIS WAY THROUGH THE ’SKY• Vernon Smith is NAU’s third new addi on to the staff , and his creden als

speak for themselves. With extensive playing and coaching experience in the Big Sky Conference, Smith brings a level of familiarity with him to an unfamil-iar situa on as the Lumberjacks’ new defensive secondary coach.

• Smith previously spent two seasons at fellow Big Sky member Portland State, where he helped coach the Vikings to a second round appearance in the 2015 FCS Playoff s. While at Portland State, Smith mentored both of his star ng cornerbacks to All-Big Sky honors in his fi rst season in 2015, before following that up with coaching Xavier Coleman to All-Big Sky and Associated Press All-American honors last year.

• His early coaching career includes stops at a number of schools including Arizona Western, which followed an All-American career at Montana. A teammate of current NAU defensive coordinator Andy Thompson, Smith was a three- me All-Big Sky selec on and a 2002 Second Team All-Amer-ican in 2002 as a Griz. Together with Thompson, Smith won a Na onal Championship in 2001.

WATCH ME NOW• A total of 11 Lumberjacks were recognized with preseason accolades and

spots on na onal watch lists leading into the 2017 season.• Sophomore Case Cookus and senior Emmanuel Butler headline the list as

both were named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List, awarded annually to the most outstanding off ensive player in the FCS. Cookus was also named to the CFPA FCS Na onal Performer of the Year Watch List - an award he won as a freshman in 2015 - and Butler was named a preseason All-American by both FCS STATS and College Sports Madness.

• Butler, senior Tyler Shank and sophomore Griffi n Roehler were all selected to the All-Big Sky Preseason Team. All three also garnered Preseason Big Sky First Team honors along with senior Elijah Marks.

• Among the 11 players who were awarded preseason Big Sky dis nc on by College Sports Madness was freshman Chancellor Brewington, who is pre-dicted to be the Big Sky Freshman of the Year.

OUR DOME, OUR HOME• NAU’s overall success could very well depend on how it conquers the rigor-

ous travel in the Big Sky Conference because over the last four-plus years, the Lumberjacks have taken care of business at home. Since 2013, the ’Jacks have won 19 of 23 games in the Walkup Skydome.

• This trend would bode well for the Lumberjacks as they have six home games on the slate, including two versus teams from the Missouri Valley Football Conference (Western Illinois and Illinois State), for the fi rst me since 2011.

• In the last two years (2015/2016), the Lumberjacks have averaged 48 points per game in the Dome and have scored 21 or more points in 10 straight home contests.

• The last two years have coincided with sophomore Case Cookus’ tenure as NAU’s star ng quarterback. Cookus, in six starts in the Walkup Skydome that he did not leave due to an injury - excluding last season’s game versus East-ern Washington - has guided NAU to a 6-0 record. In seven career home games, he owns a 34-to-2 touchdown-to-intercep on ra o and has a com-ple on percentage of 70.1.

PLUTO: THE HOME OF THE BIG SKY• The debate rages on whether Pluto is a planet or not. What is not up for debate is whether Pluto is the new home of the Big Sky Conference. Star ng this year,

Pluto TV is the new home for all Big Sky live streamed events.• Pluto TV, the leading free Internet television service in America, will off er up to 700 football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and selected soccer, so ball

and track & fi eld events from the conference.• All live video streams can be found on the Pluto TV app, available on iPhone and iPad from the App Store and on Android devices from Google Play. The app is also

available on any connected living room device such as Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, PlaySta on or Xbox as well as most smart TVs. Addi onally, Pluto TV can be accessed at pluto.tv.

• NAU’s home channel on Pluto TV will be 239, while fans can catch the Lumberjacks on their respec ve conference opponents’ home channels.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED• The Big Sky Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference have been the FCS’ most successful conferences in recent history, and in 2017, bragging rights are on

the line with the announcement of the Challenge Series.• The two leagues will match up eight mes this season, with NAU set to compete in two of them versus Western Illinois on Sept. 9 and Illinois State on Oct. 7. The

Lumberjacks are one of two Big Sky schools - North Dakota being the other - to have mul ple MVFC teams on their 2017 slate.• NAU’s Oct. 7 matchup with Illinois State could have serious implica ons on the Challenge Series as it will be the eighth and fi nal head-to-head game between the

two leagues.

GOT THE HAIR, GOT THE LEG• When the ’Jacks get lined up for a kick - be it a fi eld goal, extra point or kickoff - sophomore Griffi n Roehler takes center stage. Known for his fl owing blonde locks,

Roehler proved last season that he has the right leg to match it during a phenomenal freshman campaign.• Following an impressive line of NAU kickers in recent history, Roehler started on the right path in her fi rst collegiate season, leading the team with 83 points scored.

He converted 13-of-16 fi eld goal a empts for an 81.2 percent clip and made all but one of 45 extra points.• Roehler’s list of 2016 accolades include being named to the All-Big Sky First Team as a placekicker, College Sports Madness All-America Third Team and HERO

Sports’ FCS All-Freshman Team.DON’T FORGET ABOUT US• While sophomore Case Cookus and senior Emmanuel Butler have garnered the preseason hype, NAU’s off ense has a number of returning playmakers which should

allow the Lumberjacks to light up the scoreboard all season long.• With Butler occupying defenses’ a en on on the outside, senior Elijah Marks is free to patrol the middle of the fi eld - an area that he skillfully controls. Star ng

last season with a bang with an 87-yard catch and run to the paydirt against Arizona State, Marks set his season in mo on. Earning a spot on the All-Big Sky Third Team, he had a career-high 770 receiving yards on 43 recep ons and seven touchdowns last season - all totals that only trailed his classmate. He averaged 17.9 yards per catch, which actually led the ’Jacks, while also leading the team with 326 kick return yards.

• Juniors William Morehand and Jonathan Baldwin also provide Cookus with receiving weapons. Morehand was third on the team in receiving yards (456) and receiving touchdowns (5) and was a dangerous return threat, ranking 14th in the FCS in punt returns on his way to All-Big Sky Honorable Men on honors. Baldwin started eight games at ght end and recorded three touchdowns and has not missed a game in his fi rst two seasons.

• The weapons are not limited to only the air though, as sophomore Joe Logan showed he can run with the rock last season. An all-conference honorable men on pick as a freshman, Logan led NAU in rushing with 726 yards and fi ve touchdowns despite star ng just four games and appearing in nine. He burst onto the scene in his debut against New Mexico Highlands totaling 172 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns - which occurred on his fi rst two collegiate carries - and never looked back fi nishing No. 15 in the FCS STATS Freshman Player of the Year Vo ng.

THE FRONT LINE• If NAU’s playmakers do their thing, NAU’s off ensive line should not be exempt from credit especially with the experience they stack up at three of the fi ve spots.• Seniors Blake Porter and Tyler Shank both garnered preseason all-conference recogni on a er All-Big Sky honors last season. Porter was voted to the Third Team

in 2016 and has started 23 consecu ve games. Shank earned 2016 Second Team honors and has started his last 21 games that he has appeared in. Meanwhile, junior Cole Habib started all 11 games a year ago.

• The sturdy trio were part of an off ensive line that ranked fi h in the FCS last season in sacks allowed per game at 0.73. Before Southern Utah got to the quarterback four mes in the season fi nale, the off ensive line allowed just four sacks total in the fi rst 10 games.

• The combina on of the Lumberjacks’ talented off ensive line and explosive talent at the skill posi ons is a lethal recipe.

2-D• The NAU defense returns just two starters from their 2016 squad, with both residing in the defensive backfi eld. All-conference sophomore Khalil Dorsey and junior

Andrew Gose are the lone returning starters on the defensive side of the ball having combined to start 18 games.• Dorsey earned All-Big Sky Honorable Men on honors and led the team with two intercep ons. He tallied 47 tackles, 33 coming unassisted, and was also named

the team’s Newcomer of the Year.• Gose was one of four defensive players to start all 11 games a year ago, and he is the top returning tackler in the secondary with 50.

YOU MIGHT RECOGNIZE THEM• While the defense has just two returning starters, that does not imply that fans will not recognize the names taking the fi eld. Partly due to injuries, and partly due to

simply not taking the fi rst steps onto the fi eld, NAU s ll has a host of players who are capable of making an impact for NAU defensive coordinator Andy Thompson.• On the defensive line, senior Clarence Smith and junior James Walton each played in all 11 games last season while junior Jalen Goss appeared in 10. Each made

at least 17 tackles and will provide experience and leadership for a unit that returns none of their starters.• Junior Jake Casteel and senior Byron Evans lead the linebacker unit a er combining for seven starts last season. Casteel is NAU’s top returning tackler with 67,

which ranked third overall in 2016. Sophomore Taylor Powell could contribute defensively a er earning All-Big Sky Honorable Men on special teams honors as a freshman last season.

• The secondary was hit hard due to injuries last season as juniors Maurice Davison and Wes Su on both missed signifi cant me. Davison and Su on were projected starters and each started four games before going down with their respec ve injuries. Both are back though and are expected to line up in the secondary when the 2017 season kicks off .

TWO-SPORT STAR• Sophomore Khalil Dorsey was more than just a football player in his debut

season at NAU. An honorable men on all-conference cornerback, Dorsey doubled up and competed on the Lumberjack track & fi eld team as well in the spring.

• A er star ng seven of 11 games on the gridiron, Dorsey played a big role in the Lumberjacks capturing the 2017 Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Champion-ship. He was a bronze medalist in the 60-meter hurdles at the indoor con-ference championships and placed fi h in the long jump. Dorsey registered a fi h-place fi nish in the 110-meter hurdles at the Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

• As a prep at Colony High School, Dorsey competed in both football and track & fi eld.
