It’s time to set sail at Miami’s annual International Boat Show. The star of the sea this year is the Ferretti Group- the world’s leading brand in the design,

construction and sale of some of the most luxurious motor yachts. With their unique portfolio of yachts such as Riva, Bertram, CRN, and more, Ferretti Group is one of the most exclusive and prestigious brands worldwide. Le CITY deluxe had the pleasure of speaking to James Henderson, its President for Americas, and discuss the latest boat show trends of the year.

James you presented a new model at the boat show, what was the feedback?

The response has been fantastic. We pre-sented three new boats, the new Ferretti 650, Ferretti 750, including a sneak preview of Ferretti 6. We are known for innovation, so every year we try to bring out new model that is groundbreaking and reflecting the DNA of our brand.

What are the new boat trends?

The Open boats are the new tendency, in line with that falls Riva. – This extraordinary brand is 172 years old this year and we’ve always been known for open boats at Riva, and if you go back to the icon of the 1960s boating, Riva’s boats were it. Riva has always been synonymous with Miami, synonymous with the French Riviera, with Monaco and

with celebrities and so we also try to develop something along the lines of the open boat concept. The base of the platform that we’re using is Riva 86 Domino, which has been a very successful product for us. We’ve built twenty of them to date and 4 or 5 of them are here in Miami. The boat that we’re working on now is going to be based on that model. It will be incredibly fast with 14 knots and an open hot tub. It is Ferretti patented and has never been done before. For us it really follows the innovation of the brand.

What was the main focus for the boat show aficionados this year?

What we were trying to do for them in Florida is to maintain the inventory of all the popular models that we carry, very specific to the American market. We have increased our investment in the Americas in the last couple of years, which includes a flagship showroom

in Ft. Lauderdale of 45,000 square feet. We have all of our brands on display in Palm Beach, which we opened at the end of 2012. Also there is a new store in Miami Beach. So what we’ve got is a full inventory for the American market and the boat show is a great opportunity for us to showcase that with 25 models on display at a retail value of $130 million. We really try to represent one popular model of each brand. So when people come in, we can show them a big range. This is the chance to display the scale of our infrastruc-ture in the American market, something for everyone. Every boat show we mix in some new models along with the number of our inventory models. Moreover, the American market is an interesting market. It can be quite diverse. A number of our buyers are incredibly successful individuals and some of them are also quite impulsive so they come into boat shows and it’s not uncommon to for them to buy 80 or 90-foot boats in one day. It’s extraordinary.

Are these returning customers or the new ones?

It’s a bit of a mix actually. In the last couple of years we had a 30% growth in the market so we’ve been very successful, but we also have a retention ratio of an estimated 40% which means that we have an awful lot of repeat clients and also the people who buy the product for the first time and then come

My goal in this is not just to sell one boat to somebody. My goal is to build a relationship with the client. Given that we have such a range of products and a portfolio, we can take people all the way up in the brands. So we start them with a 20 foot Riva and then go all the way up to our CRN brand which is now the largest that we build up to 240 feet.

It’s interesting what you’ve said. People no longer go the traditional way of taking it step by step but purchase a big boat right away.

The world economy developed so quickly that you have a lot of people that have reached a point in their lives and their careers where after such hard work they want to spend more time with their family and their friends, and having a yacht is an amazing way to do that.

A number of our clients have grown with us through different boat sizes, others come in and go straight into an 80-foot plus. We

also own a factory-direct organization. We’re one of the first to sell factory brands. So in America we’re the manufacturer and also the wholesaler and retailer and we deliver the boats to be serviced. So the nice thing for a client is when he comes on board, they’re buying it from the factory but after that we’re also responsible for managing and even hel-ping them with the after sales process.

 Do you do trade-ins?

Absolutely. We prefer to do trade-ins of our own brands. We also have a brokerage business which also does chartering. On the brokerage side, it’s an old brokerage firm that has been around since 1945. What we decided to do this year is to supplement the brokerage business with the charter business. If a client wants to charter a boat instead of owning one or if they’d like to get some experience with yachting, we make it possible. Also, a number

of our clients who own a boat, who might have their boat in the U.S or the Caribbean, and they want to have a boat in the Mediterranean for the summer, so we can help them find a boat just for the summer. Chartering is great; it generates additional income and keeps the crew fresh.

On a personal note, if you had to pick one boat, which boat would that be?

One of the nice things about my job is that I get to try a little bit of everything. I enjoy the different boats for what they do. I love going out on Riva 44 and 45 in Miami- it’s fantastic. I enjoy the performance and the handling of them. However the boat I tend to introduce everybody to is the 800 Ferretti because it is one of the best representations of what we do

The new yacht, a restyling of the suc-cessful Ferretti 720, stands out for its even-more slender lines, thanks to the large glazing extending from

stern to bow and a restyled, lower flybridge. The innovative aft area has been further extended, to ensure the utmost relaxation when cruising. “The new 750 is the evolution of one of the latest additions to the Ferretti Yachts range, the 720, and possess the rare and precious characte-ristics of a wine which can be appreciated with greater intensity as time passes,” says Ferretti’s Global Brand Manager Leonardo Allasia.

Conceived by the Group’s Product Strategy Committee and Marketing Department in cooperation with Ferretti Group Engineering and AYT&D, together with Studio Zuccon International Project, Ferretti Yachts 750 im-mediately strikes for its slender and sporty outer lines, which benefit from the installation of an elongated flybridge with recessed satellite ante-nnas – a solution that minimizes the aesthetic impact of the domes on the boat's profile. In the standard version the craft has no hard top. An almost 5-meter-long Bimini top can be installed on the upper deck upon request. The sun deck is also available in two more versions, fitted with a roll bar and integrated Bimini

top or with a hard top and awning, respecti-vely. These three solutions bear witness to this model’s great versatility. Moreover, the sunba-thing area located beyond the pilot station has been further enlarged, allowing guests to enjoy the utmost relaxation at all times.

Another important innovation can be found in the aft outdoor area, where a wide electrica-lly-hydraulically operated swimming platform can be lowered by almost half a meter below the water surface, resulting in very easy tender hau-lage. This platform can lift up to 450 kg and can host an almost four-meter-long tender (upon request the boatyard can supply a Williams

385 Turbojet). This area has also been concei-ved as a pleasant play-area where the Owner and his guests can relax directly on the sea. A large compartment with tilting door has been installed on the platform, to store sea / diving equipment and other items. A series of steps integrated in the hull can also be found aft, to starboard, granting easy access to the cockpit, while on the left-hand side a seat allows to get ready to dive into the water.

From the cockpit - which is a true outdoor living & dining room with teak flooring, furnis-hed with a large wooden table, a sofa and chairs seating up to 8 people - access can be gained to both the flybridge, via a staircase to port side, and the crew cabins, via another staircase leading aft, left of the sofa. The interior décor is characterized by a series of fine design solutions resulting in a very modern style: oak wood, for example, has been combined with grey lacquered inserts in the ceiling panels, in the anti-rolling compartments around the furni-ture, and in the curtain storage compartments.

Stepping into the salon, a large L-shaped sofa in leather & custom-made fabric, including a series of storage peaks under the cushions, can be found on the left-hand side of the room. A leather coffee table, also built by the boatyard

and featuring a glass top by Omnidecor, com-pletes the living area furniture.

Continuing towards the bow, a sliding glass door leads to a passage room with dinette and two small couches that can also be used for chartering; from it access is gained, on the left, to the galley and, at the extreme bow, the pilot station. The large white lacquered galley with Corian top is directly connected to the pilot station by a second sliding door, towards the bow. Excellent visibility in the pilot station is ensured by the front and side glazing. Left of the helm station, a door opening on the outdoor walkway allows the crew to reach the wheelhouse, the cockpit, and the crew quarters directly, without crossing the salon, thereby ensuring the utmost privacy to onboard guests. Right of the pilot area is the staircase leading to the lower deck.

In the standard below-deck configuration Ferretti Yachts 750 features four cabins, all en-suite. Besides the full-beam master cabin, located amidships, there are two twin cabins at the extreme bow and a VIP cabin lit by large open-view windows. In the master cabin, the bed is located in the centre and is oriented along the cruising direction. On the left, a sliding door leads to the wide bathroom, which exploits the

cabin width to the fullest and is divided into three different areas, among which the wide glass-wall shower box is worth mentioning in particular. The colour shades chosen for this cabin make it really stylish and yet modern and with a strong personality. The bed band and headboard, for instance, are in the same grey shade as the lacquered furniture and fur-nishings on the main deck.

Upon request the port guest cabin can be fit-ted with two sliding beds or a queen-size double bed. The VIP cabin is located at the extreme bow and benefits from plenty of natural light let in by two windows with portholes. Differently from the previous model, the column in front of the double bed now includes a practical mirror, just under the TV screen, that completes the vanity area.

In line with the latest medium-to-long Fe-rretti Yachts models, the Ferretti Yachts 750 offers various possible interior layouts, designed by the Italian brand’s team to meet the specific needs of different Owners on the various inter-national markets where the brand is currently present.

Three different options are available for the main deck. The first two mainly regard different galley configurations. Indeed, the galley – to-

gether with the pilot station and the dinette - can be separated from the salon and the dining area, and accessed via a sliding glazed door. Alternatively, it can be opened towards the bow and the stern, thereby turning the main deck into a large open space - a solution that is particularly appreciated in the United States.

The third layout - specifically conceived for the new eastern markets – features a large aft living area with two L-shaped sofas along both bulwarks, while the dining area is furnished with a large round table and a bar unit with a sink to portside. In this latter solution the galley is located on the lower deck.

Indeed, on the lower deck, a second con-figuration is possible besides the standard configuration with four cabins, with all areas entirely devoted to business and entertainment activities. In this second layout the master cabin is replaced by a large play-room with karaoke, furnished with a C-shaped sofa and featuring a dedicated head. The galley, a service room for onboard guests, replaces the guest cabin to starboard. Compared with the traditional layout, the left guest cabin and the VIP cabin at the extreme bow remain unchanged

The New Luxury SuperyachtCatamarans

Luxury catamarans are gaining in popularity, especially with the newer and better models being built.

The world of luxury yachting has a new frontrunner on the waters called the catamaran, the boats with two parallel hulls or !oats. While

at one time catamarans were a rare sight on any waterway, Sail World, a website dedicated to sailing, sail-racing and cruising news, reports that “the day of the catamaran is fast approaching as both sailors and manufacturers adopt the multi-hull as a smart way to go for the cruising sailor.”

Today catamarans are generally chosen for their speed and power as sailing vessels for rough waters o"ering luxury, performance and fuel e#ciency. Mares International, building power catamarans for over 25 years, constructs these vessels in one of the worlds most technically advanced boat yards in the world. Mares, which translates as the “sea,” was founded in 1982 by a man who had a passion for $shing. While visiting New Zealand, an area where seven-foot seas are the norm, he noticed the catamaran, a boat designed to ride !awlessly through harsh sea conditions. Seeing this vessel ride easily across the waves, evenly and with amazing control, he saw great potential and began perfecting the unique Mares Design.

%e Mares 45 Fly Bridge, the newest catamaran added to Mares !eet, is guaranteed to turn heads either at the dock or cruising the inland waterways. Not just a powerful vessel, this catamaran boasts design and detail including all new Italian styling with all the advantages of Mares’ patented cat hull. %is boat has a spacious comfortable Fly bridge

for the yachtsman that enjoys driving his boat with the cool sea breeze in his hair. %is new cat has the distinctive lines of a “Mares” and the interior styling and meticulous detail to the $t and $nish normally found on much larger Yachts. %e Mares 45 Fly Bridge de$nitely a"ords a luxurious ride complete with teak decks and comfortable seating, but it’s the steering station that impressive the skilled yachtsman with its clear view of the sea and a full set of instrumentation that meets the requirements of the most sophisticated yachtsman. Mares, known for its precision and custom designs, uses an asymmetrical hull which forces air into the tunnel and gives the boat li&, which translates to better fuel economy and faster speeds. In a catamaran, you’re not pushing through the water; you’re riding on top with a ride that’s smooth, fast and comfortable. Mares also uses the latest technology to make their catamarans as fuel e#cient as possible which s accomplished with lightweight construction, Pod drives and foil assist in the tunnel. If !ying across the water in a luxury vessel is the ride you’re seeking, Mares has a !eet of catamarans waiting for your inspection.

While yachtsmen and $shermen have been choosing catamarans for their speed and ability to handle rough seas for years, catamarans are now competing in the superyacht category. Luxury catamarans are gaining in popularity, especially with the newer and better models being built, however catamarans remain for the most part sailing yachts. According to CharterWorld.com,

the superyacht catamarans have gained in popularity for several reasons, one being the fact that they o"er the speed and space of a large modern motor yacht while o"ering the smooth e#cient sailing performance of a sailing yacht. “Europeans, particularly the French, were the $rst to take up the luxury catamaran concept in a serious way. All areas of the world are now showing a stronger interest in designing and building catamarans and many are being produced and sold in countries like the United Kingdom, Italy, United States, Australia and New Zealand.” Another reason for their popularity is the reduced dra&. A large catamaran has the capability to moor in close to the shoreline and get the best spots in port. Furthermore, luxury catamarans have excellent stability, safety and e#ciency in terms of engine and fuel usage. CharterWorld.com also reports that catamarans have also become a more popular choice for charters as well as for purchase.

%ose interested in owning a luxury catamaran should also consider the Sunreef 90 ULTIMATE, a light carbon, high-performance oriented superyacht, a fairly new o"ering from Sunreef Yachts. %is vessel boasts sleek, marine hulls with a reversed bow that allows speeds up to 20+ knots and sails with the safety and stability of a catamaran. Sunreef Yachts, the leading designer and builder of luxury sailing and power catamarans and superyachts from 60 to 200 feet in the world, has recently expanded to a new market niche by introducing a new line of ultra-modern, high-performance sailing

catamarans with environmentally-friendly elements, the Sunreef 90 ULTIMATE being the newest model from that line. Besides its luxury features, the Sunreef 90 features a compact and minimalist superstructure that reduces air resistance. Environmentalists will be pleased to note the green qualities on board such as solar panels, and the wind and hydro generators – that allow silent running at anchor. !e "ybridge, typically a leisure area, is strictly dedicated to sails maneuvering and entirely covered by solar panels which allows for transparent ceilings in the saloon and master cabin. !is vessel also boasts two helm stations that allow for easy sailing as well as breathtaking views.

!e Sunreef 90 ULTIMATE, a true luxury superyacht, o#ers excellent accommodations and a large glass wall a#ords passengers a stunning, uncovered view over the sea. !e port side hull houses a double guest cabin complete with bathroom and storage and a crew cabin in the rear. !e starboard hull has two double guest cabins with bathrooms and a service room that connects with the galley. Another feature of this luxury catamaran is the private terrace that features a spa pool, bar and lounge. !e Sunreef 90 ULTIMATE, a truly accomplished masterpiece that took more than 6 months for the Sunreef design team to $nalize, provides the perfect vessel for entertaining and guests will enjoy the thrill of the high speeds and the impressive size of the yacht. Today’s catamarans, now $rmly placed in the superyacht category, have come a long way from their origins as the simple double canoes used in the 1700s.

más so!sticadas.
