NAY PYI TAW, 27 Dec—Minister for EnergyU Lun Thi visited the construction project of No. 5Fertilizer Factory in Pathein, Ayeyawady Regionyesterday morning.

KABUL, 27 Dec—NATO says one of its servicemembers has been killed in a roadside bombing insouthern Afghanistan.

A coalition statement said the person was killedMonday. It provided no other details.

the genetic codes of the wild strawberry and a certaintype of cacao used to make fine chocolate, work thatshould help breeders develop better varieties of moremainstream crops.

The wild strawberry is closely related to importantfood crops such as apples, peaches, pears andraspberries, as well as cultivated strawberries, so itsgene map will help breeders of these plants to producenew varieties, the researchers said.

NEW YORK, 27 Dec—NASA’s WISE infraredtelescope, which recently celebrated the one-yearanniversary of its launch into space, has returnedsome stunning photos lately.

The new pictures from WISE — short for Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, which launched on 14Dec, 2009 — are dramatic, colourful images ofinterstellar clouds of gas and dust called nebulas.

The first photo depicts a structure known as theFlaming Star Nebula, which is about 1,500 light-yearsaway in the constellation Auriga. At the nebula’sheart is the star AE Aurigae, which appears to beablaze, hence the name.

AE Aurigae is a so-called runaway star,researchers said. It was likely born in the TrapeziumCluster, in the constellation Orion, but was booted outby a collision with a binary star system about 2.5million years ago.

The enhanced colours seen in the image representspecific wavelengths of infrared light, which unaidedhuman eyes cannot see. Hot stars scatteredthroughout the nebula show up as blue and cyan.Glowing gas appears green, while heated-up dust isprimarily red, researchers said.

TV footage showed that the white-and-orange helicopter was kept afloatby an inflatable device in the waterclose to the bank.

DURHAM, 27 Dec—Student researchers report91 percent of US college students use theircellphones one to five times per class.

The student researchers at the University ofNew Hampshire in Durham report students wereaware phone use was frowned upon in class andalmost half of those using phones during class —49 percent — attempted to conceal their use.

The university-wide study also found 51percent of students said they knew theirconcentration was being adversely affected byphone use and 52 percent said the phone affectedthe amount of information they receive duringclass.

Female students were 7 percent more likely totext, 5 percent more likely to text frequently and13 percent more likely to hide phone use in classthan male students, the survey says.

“Even though the majority of college studentsdo not own a smartphone, those who do, are muchmore active using their phones in class,” studyleader Chuck Martin said in a statement.

The reasons ofthe outbreaks were due to462 negligence, 194 stovefires, 103 electric shockfires, 38 arsons, 31 forestfires, three accidental fires,one arson by insurgentgroup. A total of 4,868houses and buildings, 22factories and 40 ware-houses were ruined and 20people died in the fires. Thetotal amount of damageswas K 200,543,067.

The outbreak offire in 2006 was 833times— 508 negligence,171 stove fires, 106 electricshock fires, 25 forest andthree accidental fires. Alto-gether 2,341 houses andbuildings, 23 factories and13 warehouses were dam-

aged and 27 people died inthe fires. The total amountof damages was equal to K859,595,480.

In 2007, 944 firesbroke out. The reasons ofthe outbreaks were due to520 negligence, 236 stovefires, 108 electric shockfires, 32 forest fires, 29arsons, 31, ten accidentalfires. Altogether 3,974houses and buildings, 22factories and 12 ware-houses were ruined and 53people died in the fires. Thetotal amount of damagesamounted to 969,433,941.

In 2008, 714 firesbroke out. The causes weredue to 308 negligence, 191stove fires, 146 electricshocks fires, 34 arsons, 22forest fires, 11 accidentalfires and two fires by light-ing. A total of 2,282 housesand buildings, four facto-ries and 13 warehouseswere damaged and 33 peo-ple lost their lives in thefires. The total amount ofdamages was K

9,407,558,170.Up to November

Two killed in train-carcollision in France

PARIS, 27 Dec—Two people were killed after aregional express train collided with a car on Saturdaynight in the northern province of Eure, local mediareported.

The train bound for Paris from northwesterncity of Caen collided with the car on a levelcrossing. The car was pushed about 1.5 km awayand two people in the car were killed on the spot.

The two victims have not been identified andthe cause of the accidents remained unknown as ofSaturday night. No injuries were reported amongthe 570 passengers on board, who have continuedtheir Paris trip by transferring to other trains, saidthe state-owned French National Railway Company.

To reduce therisk of fire outbreaks, people should follow the precautions of Fire Services Department.
