Allow me to share with you the storyof Walayat, a low-income beneciary

working for the Avari & Beach Luxuryhotel group who recently suffered abrain hemorrhage. Had Walayat not beenenrolled in the Naya Jeevanhealth plan, his family would have found it impossible

to nance the PKR 125,000 required for

his complex, in-hospital treatment. Underordinary circumstances (if they got reallylucky) they might have borrowed moneyfrom a predatory loan shark, who wouldhave loaned them money at extortionaryinterest rates, indebting the entire family

    for a generation.

Walayats kids would have been pulled outof the low-cost school they were attendingand be given a one-way ticket into theurban child labor markets exposing them

to the perils of child trafcking, sexual

and drug abuse, illiteracy and generationalpoverty. All a consequence of his familys

inability to pay a medical bill for a life-savingprocedure a bill that was ten times hismonthly salary.

There are millions of Walayats in theemerging world who spend most of theirmarginalized, vulnerable lives teetering onthe edge. We may not be able to reachout and provide a social safety net to all

of them but we can certainly impact thosewho work for us whether informallyas domestic maids, drivers, cooks, guards, etc. or formally as workers in our smallbusinesses, factories and schools, etc.

Together we can r ise above and transformthe lives of those around us and we can doit today!

As par t of our Value Added Services, we strive to provide knowledge about health and

wellness that will remain worthwhile to our members for years to come. With dentalhealth being an integral part of life, we have also incorporated ample opportunities ofdental education for our members.

Dr. Sadiqa Mahmood shares a page from her journal about a recent dental workshop sheconducted at Manzil School.

When I conducted the Happy Teeth/Sad Teeth workshop at schools, manychildren turned up and volunteered to quit

substance abuse (i.e. chalia, mawa, gutka). In fact, I was able to identify two kids atManzil School with Oral Sub-MucousFibrosis (a premalignant condition thatleads to limited mouth opening). Afterproviding placebos to those children inorder to help them quit, I trained their

teachers to administer the necessary drugsand also keep track of their progress. Inaddition, they were given incentives to quit

their addictive habits.Another interesting case I came across wasat one of the cafes where I spotted a staffmember who had tied together his mobile/loose teeth with a rubber band, andfurther suppor ted them with chewing gum.

I educated the patient about the treatmentoptions available and referred him to a

third-party health care facility that wouldmanage this concern.Dental health is very much a part of apersons overall health and together withprevention and treatment, I believe we cangradually shift the mindset of these peopletoward good dental hygiene and overallhealth.

Recently, on April 5, 2011 all beneciariesthrough our domestic staff model wereoffered the Healthy Heart and DentalHygiene workshop.

Employees of Espresso Cafs receiveda Healthy Heart and Dental Hygieneworkshop on May 12, 2011 duringwhich considerable attention was givento the perils of excessiveghutkause andsmoking.

Healthy Hearts and Happy Teeth By Dr. Zahra Shah, Program Coordinator Preventive Health

    3

Naya Jeevan, through facilitating healthinsurance, does act as a safety net for low-income staff and NGO school children whenit comes to hospital admissions. However, the concept of preventive health care is

equally important but virtually non-existentin Pakistan. When I joined Naya Jeevanas a Preventive Health Care CoordinatorI was unsure of what sort of reaction thedifferent population groups would have to thecurrent workshop for the month; My HealthyHeart.Over the past month I have deliveredworkshops to chefs , waiters, factory workers, domestic staff and NGO school children allover Karachi. Each workshop yields brilliantquestions and has helped all of us at Naya

Jeevanrealize we were not wrong in believingthat all population groups in Pakistan, if giventhe opportunity, would benet from learningabout a healthier lifestyle.

With children, we play an interactive game;there is a ball representing blood and onechild is the heart, one is the lungs and oneplays a body. The atmosphere is exciting. Likespectators in a football match, the rest of thechildren shout out which body part the bloodshould go to next. We ask questions andreward them with sweets being thrown acrossthe classroom while engaging them with jokesabout heart break.

With adults, I like to emphasize lifestylechanges, the concepts of exercise andencourage an exercise group to start ineach population group whether itsrestaurant staff or factory workers. I teachthe mechanisms and warning signs of heartattacks and strokes as part of the curriculum. Its a learning experience for the entire Naya

Jeevan team crossing language barriers, trying to make complicated medical jargontangible and understandable and makingimpromptu changes in each workshopdepending on the group.

Raise your hands, place yournger under your thumb

    yes, like that now jump!

Laughter ripples through the dilapidatedclassroom, as the children of a small NGOschool all felt their pulse for the rst timein their life. As I saw pulses escalating andcontagious smiles on their faces I thoughtabout how the rst time I did this exercisewas in a privileged school in London. Ireected on how although the surroundingswere a stark and tragic contrast, childrenall over the world are just the same and asdeserving of quality health care teaching as isanyone else.

This was how we kick-started the workshopthemes; complementing each medicalworkshop with a dental workshop, developedand run by Dr. Sadiqa, where children learnhow to keep their teeth happy or when

their teeth are sad. Adults learn aboutoral cancers and treatment procedures. Our aim as medical professionals is notto teach biology; the whole concept ofpreventive health care fails unless you helppeople understand the consequences andmechanisms of the diseases they are beingtaught about.

Every human being, whatever socio-economicgroup they may belong to, has a right tounderstand their body better and deserves achance to make informed choices regardingtheir personal health. This is what the Naya

Jeevanpreventive health care workshops areall about.

During my ve years at medical school in theUK, I never thought I would nd myself in asmall factory on the outskirts of Karachi or inThatta, teaching what I learned in Cardiologyto individuals, sometimes in broken Sindhi, tosome of those who have never before seena picture of a real heart. I nally understandwhy our CEO left his lucrative career in theUS, as I feel a unique satisfaction run throughmy veins after each workshop as I hope that

we may have prevented one future heartattack from occurring.

Recent medical graduate from Kings CollegeLondon, Zahra returned to Karachi, pursuing her

love for the city and her people. After post-ood adventures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, she

comfortably settled at Naya Jeevan, realizing herlifes mission is nding sustainable solutions to

    Pakistans public health problems.

    Paving the Way to Prosperity

The people working for companiesheaded by Dr. Mohammed EbrahimHasham know that he is a man

destined for excellence. The self-mademillionaire and industrialist is also verymuch involved in philanthropy. In oneof my many sit-downs with him, hecasually and very appropriately said,Social responsibility starts right hereat home. This mindset is among theways of thinking that has set him apartfrom others in his league. As CEO ofMehran Sugar Mills Ltd., Director ofMoghal Tobacco and involved memberof many other organizations and boards,he is a community stalwart and veteranbusinessman with a soft side for those

who face economic and other challenges.

In a landmark move, Dr. Hashamprovided all his employees and theirfamilies with coverage under the Naya

JeevanHealth Plan. Among sugarindustry companies his is the rst to

enroll employees in a collaborativehealth plan designed to enhance theirlives while caring for their health caresimultaneously. Over 1,100 of hisemployees earning up to PKR 20,000

and their families are now coveredunder the health plan, have been trained

in detail how to use the system and one-on-one medical screenings have ensued.

Dr. Hasham is one who deeply focuses onthe intrinsic benets of life and chooses

to actively channel them through all

facets of his life. His latest passion bearswitness to the fruition of his book Journeyto Excellence, a poignant account ofthe Hasham familys journey to successspanning 200 years.

Far ahead of his time, he had always beeninvolved in Corporate Social Responsibility

schemes and other philanthropicendeavors often working toward povertyalleviation and the greater benet of the

    nations economically disadvantaged.

He is afliated with thirteen non-prot

organizations including the Usman Instituteof Technology, which he founded in 1994

to honor his late brother MohammadUsman Hasham, the World MemonFoundation as well as the Daood MemorialSchool in Tando Allahyar. With the expressgoal of bettering the community, eachof his philanthropic endeavors remaina success in this regard, such as offeringavenues for students to gain highereducation, vocational training to tensof thousands of women each year orfostering life-long educational sustenanceto young school children in rural areas.

Dr. Hasham has been featured in a series

of illustrious publications such as Blue ChipMagazine, Euro Asia Industry Magazine andPakistan Economist.

He is a well-quoted man who also enjoys

quoting many literary greats. With a razor-

sharp memory he remains quick on the

draw and adept at engaging people of allsocial and economic walks of life, he enjoysspending time with his family, travel, plusreading and writing in his spare time.

A pioneer in his own right, by foundinga happening chain of coffee shops thatis completely home grown right here inPakistan, Kamil Aziz Khan already standsapart from the crowd. So in May 2009,when he enrolled all his employees in theNaya JeevanHealth Plan, it came as nosurprise. The progressive-minded, forwardthinking community stalwart is responsiblefor channeling many social enterprisesmessage through his extensive network ofcafs across Pakistan.

Initially, it was the heavily subsidized ratesthat attracted him to the plan. He explains,When it comes to employees health, ifemployees arent well it shows in theirperformance and in the same way, if theirkids arent well, it shows. He equates

it simply: employee health = betterperformance = better bottom line.

On May 12 of this year, during a HealthyHeart and Dental Hygiene workshop,he thought What has happened here is

that this organization [Naya Jeevan] hastaken an ordinary insurance model andtransformed it in a way so as to empowerits members. Group sessions with Dr.Zahra presenting the Healthy Heartworkshop and Dr. Sadiqa sharing insight

through her Dental Hygiene workshoptook place for the Espresso employees.Kamil says he learned that these peopleare open to learning and by getting themtogether in a room and giving them thetime it makes them feel appreciated. Our

    employees know that Naya Jeevanactuallycares.

His team opened up to the doctors, both passionately involved in bringingabout long-term change in the workshopparticipants. Several of them got up andfelt empowered to speak up. They sharedthat they do in fact want better health, some even admitting that they eat chaliaand other addictive substances.

The most surprising and unexpectedaspect of enrolling his employees in theNaya JeevanHealth Plan, Kamil relays, isthat the organization ventures into learningthe needs of its members, then goes outto actively educate them, teaching themhow to treat and better yet, prevent badhealth issues. As I sat there amongst myemployees during the workshop, I thoughtWOW! he says.

Thanks Kamil! We appreciate your continued support!

In the world of big insurers it is easy to imagine that people become mere numbers, andthat some of those most in need go unaided because of policy limitations. At Naya Jeevanhowever, we understand that each case is a personal story and we are dedicated to going

that extra mile with our beneciaries. Here are some of their stories:

    Health Care Rescue Fund

    SPECIAL FEATURES

Wherever possible, we gothe extra mile for our valuedmembers. Using funds generouslydonated by our friends, partnersand members of our communities,

we strive to maintain a well-endowed Health Care Rescue

Fund so that when cases likethese occur, we can step up tothe challenge and help citizens inneed.

    Health Goes Hand to Heart

An employee at Caf Flo, Navid was provided

the Naya Jeevanhealth plan, underwritten by

AsiaCare, via a policy that includes maternity

    benets, provided that the beneciary

has satised a 10-month waiting period.

Unfortunately for Navid, his wife was already

5 months pregnant at the time the policy

went into effect and when she encountered

    difculties needing urgent healthcare they

found that the insurance would not cover her.

To complicate matters further, her family hadtaken her to Lahore for emergency surgery at

a non-network hospital, which would also not

    be covered under the policy.

    Navid approached Naya Jeevan.

Dr. Sara Salman of Naya Jeevans medical

services team took on his claim and

was able to facilitate an agreement on

humanitarian grounds, on Navids behalf, with

AsiaCare settling the PKR40,000 bill up to

the maximum limit of PKR35,000 for the

cesarean surgery his wife had undergone.

WhenWalayat,an employee atAvari Towers, suddenly collapsed due to an

intracranial bleed, he was sent for an MRI

and was told that surgery for the condition

would be both necessar y and costly.

    Thankfully, under his Naya Jeevanpolicy,

underwritten by AsiaCare, he was able to

    afford the PKR125,000 procedure, undergo

surgery and is now successfully recovering.

It is easy to imagine that under the usualcircumstances people employed as peons or

security guards would be unable to stretch

their incomes to cover such costs but not

only was he covered by a benet limit of

    PKR150,000, he also had a PKR1,200 room

provision, allowing him to receive excellent

care in a pr ivate hospital.

Sha,an employee of Kansai Paints anda Naya Jeevan member, went through the

    harrowing experience of Coronary Artery

Bypass Graft surger y. This urgent procedure

was not covered under his policy but Naya

Jeevanwas able to intervene, using funds

from the Health Care Rescue Fund to

cover not only his treatment, but also his

    medication while he awaited surgery.

    AND MORE.

The HCRF also provided Hameedaof Asmas Montessori some respite when she hadto undergo an emergency laparotomy after an ectopic pregnancy. Unable to avail herself

of maternity benets through her policy she turned to Naya Jeevan and we were able to

reimburse her total expenses from our rescue fund.

Another incident this year involved a newborn baby placed at the SOS Village who had severe

pneumonia and sepsis and was not covered by the organizations health plan. The infant was

admitted in NICU at Shamsi Hospital and we were able to assist by providing the funds on

    humanitarian grounds.

In all cases, the cost of the delivery andnewborn care (immunization, circumcision, and incubator) are supported by yourcontinuing donations to our ood relief

    efforts.

    FLOOD RELIEF & RECOVERY

With the onslaught of the most devastatingnatural disaster to hit near ly two thirdsof the nation, the Pakistan oods of 2010

brought pain and str ife to many people, already suffering in poverty. One group

identied as particularly vulnerable toinfection and harm was pregnant womenwho were in their second or thirdtrimesters.

Naya Jeevanspearheaded the SafeDelivery Initiative, a program dedicatedto providing women with high-riskpregnancies a safe environment to havetheir children. The unhygienic conditionsof ood-affected areas, including camps,

would make it very difcult for these

    women to have safe deliveries.

With the help of generous donationsreceived during our Ramadan Calendar

campaign as well as other channels, ourmedical services team has facilitateddozens of births in private hospitals. Also, through our partnership with HANDS(Health and Nutrition DevelopmentSociety), we have been able to assist anadditional 109 women, catalyzing theprogram by utilizing their existing networkand infrastructure.

    FLOOD RELIEF & RECOVERY

    THATTA

January 28, 2011 marked the day when our

team traveled to serve the people of Thatta

in need, where the HANDS team and a

visiting UNICEF team was already waiting.

With the medical camp set up and running

within fteen minutes , Naya Jeevandoctors

Dr. Aftab and Dr. Fahad started seeing

patients with the help of team members

Faisal, Zeeshan and volunteer Arshad who

took the role of delivering and counseling on

medicine use. Yet another Naya Jeevan team

    member, Ahmed Khan, managed translation

    from Sindhi to Urdu.

Female nurses and attendants of HANDS

assisted our Dr. Zahra as she identied and

counseled pregnant women on the potential

    complications of pregnancy, proper hygiene

plus nutrition and using ORS. Soap and

ORS was distributed to the families. They

also learned how to avail their free delivery

    services.

Over the course of the day Naya Jeevan

doctors went on to diagnose cases such as

    rickets, suspected polio, severe malnutrition,

liver disease, skin diseases such as impetigo

    (a contagious bacterial infection mainly

involving the face of children), suspected

leprosy, severe anemia and a lot of

    respiratory tract infections.

One high-risk pregnancy struck everyone in

the group. She was a lady that was seven

months pregnant and had gone mute due

to, what seemed to be, post traumatic stress

disorder as a result of the stress associated

with the prospect of giving birth in a

    resource-scarce setting. Though pregnant, she

had stopped eating properly and ceased to

communicate with anyone. It is doubtless

that many pregnant women face similar

trauma in the wake of such severe oods,

    with varying degrees of reaction.

In his eld journal, Dr. Aftab Iqbal, Naya

    Jeevans Medical Service Manager, reports

that the trip was an eye opener to the

problems existing within just 100 kilometers

of a major city like Karachi. Considering

the situation was such in a semi urban

locale, the plight of those people located

in remote areas is unimaginable. With this

thought in mind the Naya Jeevan teamreturned to Karachi and hoped that these

people would not be forgotten six months

    into the ood.

    SUJJAWAL BUND

Soon after the partnership with HANDS

was established, the team traveled to a

camp at the village of Sujjawal Bund on

January 20, 2011 to gain an understanding

of the communitys needs. Together theteams identied pregnant women as well as

cases with acute medical concerns. Eleven

pregnancies were identied and news of

a medical camp and antenatal pregnancy

registration to be held the following week for

that and surrounding villages was announced.

The team was escorted to the regional ofce

of HANDS in Thatta where they described

the situation when the oods struck.

On October 11, 2010 the Naya Jeevanteam accompanied by the Future Leadersof Pakistan, led by Sana Saleem, visited aood relief camp in Jamshoro to survey

the situation and identify imminentneeds of the people, focusing on high-risk pregnancies. Dr. Aftab Iqbal and

Zeeshan Yousaf of Naya Jeevan, along withphotographer Jamal Ashiqain and volunteer

Waqas Ali Khan quickly worked with the

villagers who were eager to help.

They established a list of top medicalpriorities, tended to the villagers concerns, made recommendations and identied six

pregnant women, all in their nal trimester.

The team also identied other, non

pregnancy-related ailments amongst thevillagers and made recommendations and/or referrals.

Many women in rural areas or evencity-dwellers who are among strictcultural connes, are unable to pursue

the oft-desired contraception that wouldlikely help with the maternal mortalityrate. Looking ahead to the future ofthese women,Naya Jeevans Dr. Aftabponders, Change comes slowly. At leastwe are sensitizing them to medical care formother and children. Thats the rst step to

changing behaviors. He says focusing onthe mother and babys health is a precursorto the change that can occur in the future.

The concept of contraception is nothingnew for these communities, albeit ataboo topic that is handled with greatcare. Minal Rahimtoola, Co-Founder of

Citizens Archive Pakistan, recalls working in

a Liyari (Karachi) clinic where the womenwould come themselves and line up forinjective contraceptives (due to their longterm effects and invisibility) before theirhusbands would come back from jobs inthe gulf because they did not want morechildren on that particular visit. She saysIts a question of how you bring up the

issue. A more tactful approach workingwith men would be good.

There are other issues at hand too forthese women that must be addressed.Ms. Rahimtoola suggests educating these

families on birth spacing so that even ifthey are not keen on contraceptives at

least they can be explained the benets of

having fewer, more healthy kids. Throughprograms like the Safe Delivery Initiative,a greater awareness is spread in thesecommunities and we begin to see a shift inmindset.

On March 3, 2011, Naya Jeevans Member Services team visited Keamari ood survivors camp where 52

pregnancies were registered as part of the Safe Delivery Initiative. The women, many of whom were in their

nal trimester, were channeled to Murshid Hospital.

    The rst successful hospital delivery

under Naya Jeevans Safe DeliveryInitiative took place on November 4,2010. Lal Bibi, delivered a healthy babyat our collaborating hospital Wali BhaiRajputana Hospital in Hyderabad. Upon

discharge mother and baby returnedto the Jamshoro relief camp and arereportedly doing well.

Working with our partner in Hyderabad,Wali Bhai Rajputana Hospital, for

the hospitalization and safe delivery,Naya Jeevans Dr. Aftab and Dr. Fahadaccompanied the patient and facilitatedthe completion of all paperworkand formalities at the hospital. EdhiAmbulance has partnered with us totransport the patient and an attendant.

    ohsin Maternal mortality

is still high in Pakistan.Even before the

    ooding, for every100,000 births, an

    estimated 500 womendied. The ooding

has only added to thisalready grim situation.

My summer moment came in knee highwaters. Labeled a disaster of recent times. It came with hunger, destruction & disease. It came in the face of a little girl. She woreno shoes, but walked on happiness. Had nomusic but danced to life. She did not careabout what life had not given her- she wasjust happy with what she had, a sash, hopeand two little bags of food.

Her moment came not wrapped withbows of perfection, as a hand out or evenfrom circumstance-her moment came from

choice-and sharing her moment changedmy life.

My summer moment came with therealization that with the gift of havinga voice, and the freedom of writingand speaking my mind, comes theresponsibility to stand up, to speak upand to share the stories of those wholive a life unheard.

    CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT

This Mothers Day Was SpecialFor All Mothers

Joining Hands, One Bracelet at a Time

The joy of motherhood is universal but thecircumstances are not.In ood-affected areas of Pakistan,

women and newborns face severe healthrisk. By purchasing select packages of

Butlers chocolate at the Karachi outlet onZamzama Avenue the community choseto support the Safe Delivery Initiativespearheaded by Naya Jeevan. In a jointeffort to save and enhance the lives ofthese mothers and their children, ButlersCaf partnered with Naya Jeevan byfacilitating the Rs.500 donation to this

noble cause through each package sold.We are proud to announce that thisyear we helped to give the gift of healthymotherhood to those less fortunatewomen who also deserved a HappyMothers Day.

The heavenly Pie in the Sky alsopartnered with us to support the SafeDelivery Initiative for Mothers Day, bygenerously donating 5% of all proceedsfrom Mothers Day weekend at all sevenof their outlets in Karachi. Thanks to thewonderful management and staff of Piein the Sky, Naya Jeevanand its benetingmothers will be looking forward to healthymotherhood!

The idea of teaching the art ofmaking bracelets/friendship bands tounderprivileged children here in Pakistanwas put into action by 21 year-old studentand Naya Jeevanintern from Hangzhou,

    China, Rachel.

What began as anenthusiastic expressionof dedication tohelping support theorganization became afull-edged campaign

that is now beingdone in collaboration

with Network of OrganizationsWorking for People with DisabilitiesPakistan -(http://www.nowpdp.org/).

After training teachers and students of theKarachi Vocational Training Center workingwith physically challenged children, Rachel

also shared this concept with those ofManzil, an NGO school and now thesechildren make the bracelets independently.Naya Jeevanthen markets and sellsthem through various events, designedto mobilize the community and engageeveryone to take action toward betterhealth for these children that depend ongood health.

At just PKR200, the handmade marvels

cover one months health insurance for adeserving child plus a bit of pocket moneyfor the child who made it. At about thecost of what most people would pay fora cup of coffee in major Pakistani cities, the amount is minimal. Charity events willhelp to drive this effort and some thathave already taken place include at placeslike Indus Valley School and the Institute ofBusiness Administration in Karachi.

This important stamp left behind by the

dedicated and determined young lady who

chose Pakistan as her place of giving backto the world, marks an important steppingstone for the disadvantaged children whoare often forgotten by the healthcareindustry.

Further, this inspires children in otherNGO schools to make a difference, onebracelet at a time.

To support this endeavor you can:Buy bracelets. Sell bracelets at youroutlets. Let us teach the students of yourschools. Donate funds. Spread the word.Support us in this endeavor by showingyour support through buying and wearingthese bracelets.
