The Great Onesby Ridgely Goldsborough

Chapter One

Altafulla, Spain, 1969—

“He beat me again,” the Boy muttered as he climbed onto his customary perch. The Old Man nodded, his ancient, twisted hands resting lightly on the tall bamboo fishing pole anchored in the rocks between his feet.

“…For no reason,” the Boy added. “It’s not fair.” The Old Man nodded a second time. “I don’t know about fairness,” the Old Man began, in a deep, gravelly voice. “It seems to me that all of us are dealt cards, both good and bad. Some learn to play theirs better.”

Out of habit, the Old Man pulled lightly on the line that stretched flaccid into the purple and black waters of the Mediterranean. Nothing.

“He hit her, too,” the Boy continued. He wondered when he had started calling his father and mother ‘him’ and ‘her.’ It didn’t matter. The Old Man understood. The Old Man understood most everything. “You must have done something,” the Old Man admonished. “You usually do—though even in that, you have a choice.” The Boy smirked. “After he smacked her, I jumped on his leg,” he said. “He kicked me away, into the bookcase. When he finished with her, he turned on me with his belt.”The Boy spoke with little emotion, as if giving a school history report. “Stand and pull up your shirt, Boy,” the Old Man stated. “I have aloe.” The Old Man pulled his navaja from the folds of his wide, cloth belt and cut a long strip from the leaf in his bag. Gently, he smoothed the plant over the swollen welts on the Boy’s back. The Boy stiffened without a sound. “He’s a wounded bird, that one,” the Old Man mused. “And a poor card player.” “He shouldn’t take it out on me,” the Boy complained.“Nor should you incite him,” the Old Man pressed back. The Old Man had a way of pushing the Boy’s buttons without ever making him wrong, exactly, or putting him down. It was almost as if he wanted to challenge the Boy, test him and make him think.Still, the Boy loved the Old Man more than anyone, and loved Sunday afternoons more than any other day.

The breeze picked up slightly and caused white flecks of foam to crest over the tips of the dark swells that extended from beneath the rocks into an open sea. “I have a new movie,” the Old Man said and the Boy’s face lit up in an instant. “It’s about baseball,” the Old Man added.

The Boy snapped his neck around. “What? Baseball? You don’t even like baseball. You don’t even know how to play.” The Old Man bobbed his head. “Not baseball exactly,” the Old Man corrected. “Pedro recommended it. He said it was about dreamers, like us—about a guy who had a vision and built a field before he had players because somehow he knew they would come.” “That’s crazy,” the Boy snorted. “Maybe, maybe not,” the Old Man contested. “Sometimes you have to see things in your mind long before they can happen. We’ll have to check it out for ourselves, find out what we discover.’”

The wind grew progressively stronger and caused the spray to rise high into the sky and sprinkle down on them. “Can we watch it right now?” the Boy asked after a few moments.“After the fishing,” the Old Man answered as the Boy knew he would.“Why?” the Boy grumbled selfishly. “You never catch anything anyway. In the years we’ve been out here, you’ve never caught a single fish. Why can’t we go?” The Old Man sighed. “Ahhh, Boy. That’s where you are mistaken. I had a nice bite earlier. If I keep on fishing, I am sure to catch a great fish. It’s only if I quit that I might fail.” “Sure,” the Boy muttered with a hint of disgust. “I’ll believe it when I see it.” “Yes, you will,” the Old Man smiled. “Yes, you will.”

“There is greatness within you,” are the words of motivational speaker, Les Brown, that have inspired mil-lions of people all over the world. I have been fortunate to not only be inspired by these words over and over, but also by the countless ex-traordinary messages I have heard him deliver in person, radio, TV, audio, and webinars, As one of his Platinum Speakers, directly coached by him, I have been the recipient of deep personal transformation. I can certainly say that he has helped me to recognize and, “EMBRACE MY GREATNESS. “

Les has the ability to speak directly to your soul, and as a result, real transformation takes place instanta-neously. He is “The Master of Public Speaking.” I feel quite honored to not only be part of his Platinum Network of Speakers but also to have met so many amazing professional speakers who have had the courage to say yes to their mission. I have been pro-foundly touched by their messages and have witnessed greatness in every one of them. This is why I feel a great sense of gratitude, for the realization that fortunately there are many loving inspiring messengers of hope, whose mission is to bring change into our world and who are doing it very successfully. Les has taught me the power of being humble. He always says that he has not yet delivered his best speech. This is to remind himself of how important it is to keep develop-ing yourself so you get better and better at what you do. He has also taught me another quality of a great leader, which is accessibility. He says that the speaker should always be the same person when s/he is on stage and off stage. His way of

conducting himself as a speaker and leading by example, has inspired me deeply and has shown me how to stay focused on the fact that there is a lot to learn and to keep stretching myself to embrace my greatness.

Les also demonstrates his amazing quality of connecting with people heart to heart. He treats people with great respect and truly sees great-ness in them. He is always hugging people and connecting with love and compassion. He is quite genuine and approachable. In many occasions he has made positive comments about my smile and in some instances when my smile was not there, he no-ticed it and encouraged me to make sure I smile while I deliver a speech. He says, “That’s your connection with the audience.”

I have deep gratitude for all I have learned and received from Les Brown and from every one of his Platinum Speakers. We are a family guided by the inspiration and mastery of a great leader. I have been transformed because of Les Brown’s decision to embrace his own greatness.

Turning my attention to you…my question is, are you embracing your gifts? Do you see yourself as a win-ner? Are you embracing your present circumstances with certainty that you have within the answers to overcome any challenges? Are you being a Vic-tor? Are you being grateful for what you have? Are you demonstrating your power of choice by giving the world the gift of your gifts and talents and therefore living your dreams? Are YOU EMBRACING YOUR GREATNESS? The answers to these questions will help you to take an honest inventory of yourself and make any necessary changes.

Life is easier when we make the decision to embrace our gifts and talents because this is when we are in alignment with the reason why we came to Earth. The steps below help me every day to consciously do it. I invite you to consider using them to help you embrace your greatness:

1. Let go of limiting paradigms: Make the commitment to surrender all limit-ing beliefs and habits and to replace

ArtiClethem with empowering ones. Some ways to do this is to take time to meditate, to journal about your feel-ings, or hire a coach. Consciously open your heart to your good.

2. Be vigilant of your thoughts, Words and actions: Make sure to entertain only thoughts, language and actions that are self-empower-ing. Use affirmations like, “I em-brace my Greatness.

3. Visualize yourself already as a winner: Exercise the muscle of imagination. Imagine yourself already being, doing or having what you desire. Remember that reality is what you visualize.

4. Trust in the benevolence of the Universe: There is an invisible power that wants you to be, do and

have anything you desire. Align with this power by taking time every day to meditate and be in silence so you can hear and feel its guid-ance.

In the words of Les Brown, “Devel-op a vision of your greatest self that you pursue wholeheartedly with an unstoppable spirit.”

His passion began in high school when he acquired a 35mm camera. He loved it from the start but then, as so often happens, his passion was supplanted by other circumstances. Marriage, children and work lead Mi-chael Hansen to forgo his talent, self - expression and authenticity to work in construction as a manager.

He took his photographic knowledge and unique perspective of the world with him to his work and applied his aesthetic sensibilities there. It was a career that treated him well -- espe-cially financially. “I enjoyed what I did.” But something was missing. “Once I was in management I didn’t enjoy it as much anymore. I got tired of it.” He needed to express himself differently and after years of not taking photos the desire to buy a camera nudged him—hard.

In 2000, he decided to be serious about the photography and learn ev-erything he could. He bought another 35mm camera, books and magazines and read everything he could about technique. He used his three children, at the time two in their teens and one elementary school age child, as sub-

jects for every experiment he could think of. That led to needing more equipment. He also began doing landscaping photographs but quickly moved back to portraits.

It happened that his son was studying martial arts and he found himself tak-ing photos of the other students. He approached the owner of the studio to photograph the students and sell the portraits. The owner had had a bad experience with another photogra-pher and said if Michael used digital equipment instead of film and “printed right there on site she would give me a shot at it.”

The immediate investment required $15,000.00 for a digital camera, a computer, lighting equipment, printing equipment. The investment paid off. One school led to two schools and so on.

A tangible turning point came when Michael took an outside lighting workshop. Till that moment, Michael thought it was all “done in photo shop.” One class led to another, one portrait led to another and soon he was doing events as well. His efforts

whether consciously or not, were pro-pelling him closer to his original pas-sion. He was doing this photography work part time and raising his children as a single parent.

His desire to learn and improve and to take his craft “to the next level” be-came a joke in the family. Michael was not known to be “into books” but suddenly his need to perfect his craft found him reading a new book on pho-tography weekly. “I was just reading, reading, reading. I am really passion-ate about photography. It was in my heart. Once I started learning more I decided that this was what I wanted to do full time.”

Around two years ago, Michael joined Tye Studios, in Ft. Lauderdale, as a member. He was able to rent space and equipment and shoot models. He also took a good number of classes

at the studio, especially about light-ing. “Once I came here it lit me up. I couldn’t get enough.” He was renting so much time he was going over the

limits of his membership. Scott and Donna Peplin, owners of the studio tried to help Michael. Finally, Donna put Michael to work at the studio first part time than ultimately full time. The down turn in the economy seemed timed with Donna’s offer to Michael for an opportunity to work at the stu-dio full time as a staff photographer. He jumped at the opportunity and left construction.

These days, Michael is doing a lot of commercial photography but his favorite format is fashion photogra-phy. “On a daily basis” he stated, “I

am happier. A bad day at [pho-tography] is bet-ter than a great day at construc-tion. I am loving life right now. I couldn’t be hap-

pier.”

His older daughter has gone into mar-keting and is about to join ranks with her dad. The creative streak appar-ently runs in the family as his mom

was a painter in her youth and Mi-chael believes his younger daughter has the eye of a photographer. He enjoys the other photographers he works with and has learned a good from them as well. “There is nothing better than to go to work and love what you are doing. My creative juic-es are flowing and my eyes are open to what is around me. For right now, I am content.”

The Film The Journey made by the Heartby Linda Firestone

Don and Melinda Boyer began with the “Power of Mentorship” book se-ries in 2006. This powerful series has to date sold 200,00 copies world-wide. The series was a natural pro-gression from Don’s work as a moti-vational speaker, coach and trainer. It was such a big success that Don and Melinda decided to create film of the same name. In 2007, the “The Power of Mentorship, the movie,” was released starring Bob Proctor, Vic Johnson, Marie Diamond, and other motivational and inspirational trainers.

In 2009, Don and Melinda envisioned another movie “The Journey” whose central character Jonathan after the death of his grandfather finds a se-ries of letters in the attic written by his grandfather. At the time of the discovery, Jonathan is discouraged, as his dreams and his reality do not mesh. He sits down to read the let-ters. In his imagination, Jonathan is lead through each letter by the ghost of the grandfather, played by Brain Tracy. Dr. Leticia Wright directed the film. The letters focus upon twelve crucial principles to self-discovery and self-realization. Without ruining the experience of seeing and feel-ing the message of the movie and to entice readers to experience the movie’s message when it is released in December of 2010, a partial list of the principles follow: purpose, cour-age, hard work, cooperation, respon-sibility, and imagination. “Where we each find ourselves in life is point A. Where we wish to be or become is point B. Everything in between is the “The Journey,” stated Don.

To help elucidate the point of each principle, Don gathered together a round table of experts for each prin-ciple. The groups were comprised of motivational and inspirational profes-sionals who have individually worked

hard to manifest positive life affirm-ing qualities both in individuals and the collective lives of others. The product of these conversations can only be described as an authentic exchange of ideas that help define and make verifiable each principle both for Jonathan and the viewer.

Don comes to his understanding of these 12 principles through his personal experiences. “There is no short cut to success or get rich quick scheme that will work. But, there are methods and strategies [that] if implemented over a reasonable pe-riod of time [can help] you reach any life’s dream that you desire,” Don ex-plained.

Kandee G was asked to be a mem-ber of three of the round table dis-cussions: imagination, excellence and persistence. Kandee G was approached by Don and asked if the project would be of interest to her. She jumped at the opportunity. “What struck me the most,” Kandee stated upon reflecting back on her experience was, “that the intention of everybody who worked on this proj-ect was to put together something that would effect real change [in the world.] Everyone’s heart and spirit was behind the work.” Speaking with other members of the personal de-velopment field that she had never met before was “easy. The energy swirled; it was stimulating.” She con-tinued, “This was more than making a movie and selling products, this was about collectively doing [some-thing] to improve things and making a difference.”

The inspiration and motivation for this movie was clear to Don and Melinda as they wrote the story line over two days. Don saw the need and felt that, “if there ever was a time that the world needed to hear a mes-

sage of hope and not to give up, it is now. When you stop fighting for what you want, what you don’t want automatically takes over. Though we are living in challenging times with the economy and global challenges, now is the time to become stronger and more motivated to fight for your dream.”

Don began his public speaking ca-reer in 1979. He began his working career and family life young: 18. One day, while working as a janitor, Don was cleaning the President of the company’s office. The gentleman was there. Something within Don told him to speak to the President of the company. He did. “I asked him how he became so successful? The man asked me to take a seat.” That was the first of many weekly con-versations the two of them engaged in that inextricably altered Don’s life. He experienced the wonder of a mentor who told him “Success is more about an adventure and a life style.” Don’s mentor gave him tools and eight rules to become a suc-cessful entrepreneur himself.

Don sees the lessons that he learned from his mentor, the lessons that he learned from living, and the knowl-edge that he has gained and shared with others as a way of giving people the means to manifest success in life regardless of age. Most importantly, he believes that this latest film, “The Journey” “provides people with solid, concrete answers and not just moti-vational fluff.”

It’s official now: according to a recent-ly released survey by Pew Research Center, women are the key house-hold decision-makers. When it comes to deciding on major home purchas-es, managing household finances, and other decisions, women are very much involved and often in charge. The survey found that for 43 per-cent of couples, it is the woman who makes more decisions at home. Also outside the house in today’s la-bor force, we see a similar trend. Ellen DuBois, a professor of women’s his-tory at UCLA, says the presence and significance of women in the labor force is a steady development and that “now the standard working wom-an is a married woman with children.” In the business world as well, wom-en are taking their stand as entre-preneurs and business owners. “The Index [a recent study commis-sioned by the Center for Women’s Business Research] shows that women business owners are a re-silient group, who pay careful at-tention to their business and to the trends in the larger economy,” says Beverly Holmes, chair of the Center for Women’s Business Research. And successful they are, this “re-silient group”. Look at some newly released key facts about women-owned businesses:

• 10.1 million firms are owned by women (75% or more), employ-ing more than 13 million people, and generating $1.9 trillion in sales • Three quarters of all women-owned businesses are majority owned by women (51% or more),

for a total of 7.2 million firms, em-ploying 7.3 million people, and generating $1.1 trillion in sales • Women-owned firms (50% or more) account for 40% of all privately held firms

•One in five firms with revenue of $1 million or more is woman-owned

With women on the rise, the flipside of the coin is obvious: women are exposed to unprecedented pres-sure in this day and age. Women are bombarded with increased re-sponsibility, more tasks and heavier strain. Women suffer from physical and mental problems.Women ex-perience emotional stress, feeling burnt out, stuck and fragmented. That’s why Elvira Amankwa, wife, mother and President of Impact Creations created the Total Woman Breakthrough Forum, a transfor-mational and fun learning experi-ence with the dynamite potential to transport women into the success-ful, happy life of their dreams as a total woman, complete and whole in all areas. Exclusively for women, by women, this one-of-a kind event is a powerful catalyst to transform lives in 2010 and beyond. The fo-rum is sponsored by WE Magazine for Women, Nothing but Good News Radio and The Holistic Rejuventa-tion Center in Aventura with WOM-EN (Women Owners, Managers, Ex-ecutives Networking) of The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce being the Presenting Sponsor. There is great power as like-minded women gather in a supportive atmo-sphere to discover, to learn, to in-

spire, to grow, and to play. Dynamic woman speakers with proven knowl-edge and powerful insight communi-cate effectively life-changing strate-gies into the lives of other women. The fast moving schedule includes actionable teaching sessions, pow-er-packed presentations and interac-tive panel discussions. On both conference days there will be facilitated networking with an ex-perienced coach to help you enlarge your network, to truly connect and to forge new friendships. Participants will benefit from the unique syner-gies among successful and aspiring women, where creative ideas flow freely like melted gold in an open en-vironment.To maximize the experience, ad-ditional program features in-clude a free MINI SPA, free fashion and make-up shows, an Ex-hibit Hall with select exhibitors as well as a Speaker Lounge for easy access to our champion speakers. On the last evening of the forum, participants celebrate good times in grand style! “A Black And White Affair” rounds out this fantastic conference experience. “Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and go do that. Because what the world needs is more people that have come alive.” Howard Thurman

Just as the continuous, regular heart beat inside our bodies allows us to continue living our physical lives, continually and regularly exercising the passion within our hearts allows us to live a vibrant and healthy spiritual and emotional life; and that will more than likely will lead us to the fulfillment of our life dreams and purpose.

Are you following your heart? Are you living a life that’s in sync with the rhythm of your heart’s desire? Or are you merely surviving on artificial life support- -the superficial things in life that give us temporary satisfaction? You may be thinking “how do I know if I’m following my heart or not?”Well consider your responses to the following questions:

What is it, that……you do without even thinking about it?…causes you to get caught up in and lose track of time?…causes you to come alive?…puts a smile on your face with-out your even knowing it?… you would do even if you didn’t get paid for doing it?…you would do if you had all the money in the world to do it?

I believe that the most consistent re-sponses to these questions are prob-ably very much in alignment with your dreams and purpose in life.

My next question is “When is the last time and how often have you partici-pated in this/these activities? If you

can give an affirming response to most of these questions, I’m almost willing to bet you’re most likely following your heart or well on the path to living your life with and on purpose.

Allow me share with you a portion of the journey of following my heart to living my purpose. Some of the most lively moments of my life have taken place amidst sounds, words, sights, activities and laughter of children. It is/has always been a pleasant sound to my ears and brings a smile to my face and laughter to my soul.

As an only child whose parents sepa-rated when I was only 4, early in life my heart’s desire was to have a fam-ily with several children. Somewhere deep within I knew that part of that fulfillment would be through adoption. I also knew I wanted a career that would allow me to work with children. I decided that I would become a pe-diatrician or child psychologist; and throughout high school, college and graduate school, I almost always man-aged to work with children and youth. People would even tell me about and refer me to jobs they knew of and thought I’d enjoy; and I must say that I have almost always had the advan-tage of thoroughly enjoying my work.

By my early 30’s I was pretty much established in my career as a Social Worker having worked in many youth-oriented agencies and programs but that desire to be a mom had not yet manifested and seemed like it wasn’t going to happen.

Through a series of events, divine in-tervention, and adoption, not only am I now the mother of two sons, I truly believe that it has been in following my heart’s desire (to have a family and nur-ture children) that I am now truly living my purpose as a licensed Marriage,

Family & Child Therapist, providing services to foster children and youth and their caregivers, being “Mom-E” to young people throughout the United States and abroad, and a Professional Speaker, working and traveling with one of most world- renown speakers, the “Living Your Dreams” man and “Ms. Mamie Brown’s Baby Boy” him-self, Mr. Les Brown!

I’d like to share some points with you which I feel are key to following your heart:

H. ♥ Hold a vision of your heart’s de-sire. Keep a journal and create a Vi-sion Board of that which you enjoy and desire- -have a visual heart

E. ♥ Explore opportunities and experi-ences which include your heart’s de-sire. Spend time around and research-ing those things which brings a vibrant heart.

A. ♥ Ask for information and feedback from reliable sources. You never know what and who people may know. And when you ask have a hope-filled heart

R. ♥ Resuscitate and Recreate. When life knocks the breath out of you and your dream/vision seem to have gone into cardiac arrest, take time to step back, take a deep breath, and recon-nect with the spiritual life source within from which you received your purpose/assignment in the first place. Have an open heart to new thoughts and ideas.

T. ♥Trust the process, with a grate-ful heart knowing that if you know the “Who” and the ”why” the “how” will be revealed to you as you walk forward in faith and favor.

Create Your Own Luck! by: Stacie N.C. GrantHow many times do you hear people say, “He is so lucky!” or “If someone would just give me a break, I would…” The problem globally is that 90% of our population are waiting for a “stroke of good luck” to magically drop in their lap. Only 10% of people are truly will-ing to do the work necessary to live their best life. My friends, the reality is, LUCK doesn’t just happen – you MUST CREATE it! That’s how I now I have the chance of a lifetime to work with one of my greatest inspirations, Mr. Les Brown. After years of being a fan, I finally had the opportunity to see him live in New York. The day of the event, ev-erything that could go wrong did and I almost talked myself out of attending the event. Thank God I listened to the small still voice that told me I COULD NOT afford to miss this event.

As I sat in the audience, all I could think about was how much I wish I could get the chance to work with a master orator like Mr. Les Brown. Be-ing a professional speaker for over 15 years, working with him would be the opportunity of a lifetime I needed to grow to the next level of my career.

As I heard his closing words, I rushed out to beat the crowd to his table to get a picture and autographed copy of his CD package I just purchased. The place was packed and everyone was clamoring for his attention. I patiently eased my way up in the line…heart racing & palms sweating. Then came my defining moment…”Hello Mr. Les Brown my name is Stacie N.C. Grant and I honored to meet you sir. Could you please autograph my CD pack-age? (as I whipped out my black magic marker). I am so impressed by you and your son, John Leslie. I am the mother of two young men, and my

husband and I are raising them to be powerful and productive members of society. What an excellent role mod-el John Leslie is for our young men. Thank you sir for all you do!”

Well, after my 30 second introduction Les looked at me (probably wonder-ing who is this crazy lady that travels around with a magic marker in their pocketbook) and said “Young Lady, with your personality and presence you would do good in this business!” I turned and responded with my hands on my hip “I am in this busi-ness! That’s why I need to work with you Mr. Brown!” While he was laugh-ing, I whipped out my magic marker once again and wrote my cell number on the back of my business card and handed it to him with strict instruc-tions not to misplace it. I thanked him again and walked off shaking on the inside but confident on the outside. I just spoke to Les Brown. As the kids would say “OMG”!

Two days later, Mr. Les Brown called my cell phone and left a voice mail. Well when I finally got up the cour-age to return the call, the journey to the life I am living now began. I was blessed with the opportunity of a life-time and became one of Les Brown’s Platinum Speakers. Someone read-ing this article may think it was just my lucky break. Actually, it was making the commitment to attend the event and gaining the courage to speak to up that afforded me the opportunity to “create my own luck” and work with Master Orator Mr. Les Brown.

I am so grateful to be mentored by the best and pray for God’s continued blessings upon the life and work of Mr. Les Brown for all he gives and does selflessly for others. Happy Birthday Mamie Brown’s Baby Boy!

Whatever dreams and goals you may have not yet pursued, NOW IS THE TIME! Don’t take your talents skills and abilities to the grave. Don’t cheat us all from missing out on your unique idea, business, product or ser-vice. Don’t think you have to wait for enough money, the right time or addi-tional resources. JUST START NOW moving towards fulfilling your destiny. There is only one you and none else can do what you have been placed here to do. There is no more time for excuse, just EXECUTION! The world and I are depending on your success!

Peace & Blessings,

Break The Unwritten Rulesby Dan Smith

1.) One2.) Fifteen3.) Thirty-one

Which one of the numbers above is the most different from the oth-ers?

I sometimes use this exercise to challenge people to open their minds. What do you think is the an-swer? Why? The number that is most different from the others is 2.) it is the only even number. When I announce the answer I usu-ally get bombarded with comments like: “that was a trick question”, “two is not even an option”, “you cheat-ed”, “that’s not right, you can’t do that without telling us” and some even more flavorful comments. There are also those who let out a sigh or groan of frustration that they did not see the obvious. I then write the exercise on the board again.

3 Fifteen One 2 Thirty-one 1 Which one of the numbers above is the most different from the oth-ers?

Is the problem easier now? When it is written out like this the answer is obvious. Why was it so hard to solve in the first format? It goes back to our child-hood when our teachers would tell us to number our papers whenever they gave us problems to solve. The numbers on the left side are the orga-nizational structure that guided us to creating a uniform presentation that was acceptable to the teacher. Once

we learned this we continued to fol-low without giving any conscience thought. When most people see the numbers orderly presented they au-tomatically apply the rule learned as a child. In the second presenta-tion the randomness of the number placement allows all numbers to be considered. Most people approach the first pre-sentation using a self imposed rule that is not part of the exercise. The same thing happens in life. Many of us are following non-existent rules that prevent us from fully reaching our potential.

I was raised in an environment of low expectations. Getting passing grades was expected but anything above that was not appreciated or recognized as a good thing. When I got good grades I heard, “So now you think you are smarter than the rest of us.” The rule I learned from that is stay in the middle. The same thing applied to accomplishments. I never competed for trophies. I learned not to achieve if I wanted to fit in.These are just two examples of the many limiting rules I learned and

carried with me most of my life. They defined what was, and to an even greater degree, what was not pos-sible for me.I learned very early in life that I wasn’t going to go to college, own a business, live in anything more than a modest house, or see the world. I would never rise above the level oth-er people like me achieve.Once I was old enough, I thought maybe I could move away from the negative influences and peer pres-sure and create any life I wanted. I made progress but the more suc-cess I had the more I did stupid things that set me back. I didn’t rec-ognize it at first but what I was do-ing was sabotaging myself. The in-fluences of my youth that I thought I had gotten away from had crept into the essence of my being and were now rules that controlled my life. Success meant I had to break rules that I wasn’t even consciously aware existed. My internal rules became the orga-nizational structure and set the limits on my life. Just like in the exercise there were positive things about me that I couldn’t see. I only allowed things to come into my life that fit the rules. I couldn’t see myself as any-thing beyond the limits of the rules.Since I have passed the half cen-tury mark, my life has been about identifying and eliminating those self imposed rules. I consciously look for subtle behaviors in me that in-dicate I am beginning to pull away or lose focus. When this happens I look behind the behavior and ask myself; what rule that does not exist outside of my own mind am I follow-ing? Since I am the creator of these rules, I then give myself permission to abolish or break the rule.

As a society we are constantly pro-jecting and imposing limiting beliefs on each other. I had it easy compared to what some people live through. I can only imagine the limiting self imposed rules they must have devel-oped. What about you? What rules do you follow that do not actually ex-ist? Are they holding you back? The good news is they are your rules so you can give yourself permission to break or eliminate them thereby set-ting yourself free to reach your full potential.

Heart Donorby Neal Bira

May 12, 2006 was the day my life changed dramatically. I had a mas-sive heart attack…which the doctors call the widow maker as 9 out of 10 people die on the way to the hospital. I was in a coma for two and a half weeks. An LVAD was placed inside of me to keep me alive.

(See youtube video, medical miracle nyu) For two and a half months I was in NYU Medical Center. It was then determined I was way too weak to be considered for a heart transplant. I went home at this time hooked up to all kinds of wires for this machine.

5 weeks later I returned to Colum-bia Medical Center and was then put on the waiting list. Miraculously, 36 hours later I received a call; a heart was there for me. The heart transplant was done on August 14th. 2006.

As time went on I often wondered who my donor was. Meeting ones donor is extremely rare. But one day

in May 2007 I received a call; the donors family wanted to meet me. I traveled to New Jersey to Univision Television Station where the meeting was to take place.

I was the only recipient to meet the donors’ family in New York in 2007.My donor was a 39-year old Domini-can man. I was told my donor left behind a wife and 2 young children. My donor’s sister and his son Jeffrey were there. This meeting was extremely difficult for me and that much more for Jef-frey.

Jeffrey and I spoke for a while and he said, “My dad is a hero.” Jeffrey also told me his dream is to become a chef. As time went on I heard those words everyday, “My dad is a hero.”

Jeffrey is so right as his dad is a hero along with every other donor.I spoke to the organ donor network asking them for financial aid for my donor’s family. I was told that there

was no charity to help the children and families of donors.

I decided I was going to do some-thing to help. I started a foundation to help these families. In May 2009 we received our 501-c3 Tax Exempt status.

I traveled up to New York recently and got Jeffrey a scholarship to at-tend culinary school.

We are now going to start raising monies to build this charity. A large number of volunteers have come on board. Our goal is to build this and to also bring awareness for the serious need for organ donors.

This charity is not about me, but about all the families left behind by a loved one who was an organ donor.

Some say that the world is an illusion. That each of us exists independently and creates a cast of characters to populate our world. If this is true, then it is beneficial to create a world that supports us one way or another.

It’s like the old joke: Everyone creates happiness: some when they arrive and some when they leave. In the world of our creation, we can see that some people are there whenever we need them, and others seem to be there to create obstacles and challenges. But what if our vision is imperfect? What if the people who seem to hurt us or blockade us are really providing les-sons that we need for our growth and future happiness?

This gives us the opportunity to look for the good in every experience. It also provides an opportunity to look within to see if we have become too dependent and fearful for our own

good, that is, for our own sense of self-worth. For that surely is the prize—-to have a strong sense of self-worth to support us in all our endeavors.

Les Brown “speaks from experi-ence.” “I come from a place where America is right now,” he explained, at a cross roads. “ I teach people to connect with their personal pow-ers. I help give them a vision of themselves beyond their mental conditioning. I teach them how to create new vistas of achievement for themselves.” When times are difficult, one has two options, “move head or roll over and die. Even if the chances are slim to none, I will take slim,” he stated chuckling.

In Les Brown’s world “any thing is possible.” For Les living a success-ful life does not just mean being financially successful. He believes fulfillment and balance must be categorized into three areas for ev-eryone: personal, professional, and community (“social contribution”.) “I encourage people to expand the original vision five or ten times. [The problem is that] most people fail in life because they aim to low, and the majority of people don’t aim at all,” he emphasized. How we move our dreams into reality “is not our concern.” The dream, the desire, the action are crucial in Les’s world because there

are things that happen which do not fit into “the realm of logic.” To illustrate this point Les described his beginnings. Les and his twin brother were born into poverty and left in an abandoned building. A single woman with a big heart- Mrs. Mamie Brown, adopted the two tiny boys. In elementary school he was labeled “mentally retarded.” With no formal higher education, Les argues, “no one would be able to predict that I would be living this life that I am now living.” He was voted among the top five motivational speakers in the world.

Les likes to frame things in threes. “Three reasons people are stuck right now are: 1. They don’t know who they are, 2. They don’t know how to make money with their education, their talent, their abili-ties, and 3. They don’t know how to gain access to the people who will pay them for what they know,” he lamented. He is adamant about the power of each individual to fulfill his or her potential. His coaching work, his seminars, all of his efforts and of those who work with him are to

teach people to take control of their lives. Stresses, financial burdens, a hateful job - all of these are reflec-tions of a personal ambivalence. It is his goal to give people an “experi-ence” of themselves that they can then take into the world that will profoundly broaden their personal perspectives. “We are the only form of life,” he stated, “that has the power to live from our highest vision we have for ourselves. We are the only ones that can do that. And, [so many] live from their lowest sources…Most people,” he contin-ued, “won’t participate in their own rescue.”

Throughout his years, Les Brown

has had the opportunity to travel the world and to work with other moti-vational professionals. Kandee G and Les have known each other for years. Their original association be-gan as one of mentor/mentee but it developed into a life long friendship. Both of them believe that each and every individual can succeed and that collectively and individually we can alter the world for better. Les has described Kandee as having “ a strong sense of purpose to change the planet and transform people’s life. She lives with passion and is a force to be reckoned with.”

“Kandee G has been gifted with the ability to help people change their lives.” Les Brown also states

“Kandee G is recognized as being among the top in the industry.”

Potential, fulfillment, action, visions, and change are constant images and in the tools that Les and Kandee G offer their clients, their listeners, their readers. We are more than our present situation, marriage or job.

Present circumstances cannot define the individual. “I do not look at people and what is going on in the economy and see what others see. When I think about the millions of people who have lost their jobs, I think, I would not be who I am now had I not been fired,” from that radio station, Les insisted. Difficult times in a person’s life provide lessons.

Explaining further he said, “I see this as life moving on people to release them to pursue that which they were put here on this planet to do.’’ What does all of this mean? Les offered this quote, “Where ever you find yourself, at some point in time you made an appointment to be there.”

A transformation is always possible. But it takes work. “People need to look at themselves and be brutally honest and admit that what they have been doing does not work, the results in their lives reflect that.” The world has moved from a “domes-tic economy to a global economy, whole industries have been lost be-cause of technology.” “People have to,” Les continued, “reinvent them-selves. You have to give up who you have been to give birth to who you can be. And that challenges all of us to be engaged in an ongoing process of life long learner.”

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.

For it is only when we awaken to the consciousness that is inside that we can discover the oneness that resides in us all. We are entering a dramatic time of change...a time of spiritual and emotional awareness. Slowly, one by one, we are waking up.

What does it mean, this conscious awakening?

So often we go through life on autopi-lot. Aware that we are not living as all we can be, sometimes just knowing a discontent deep inside. Unaware that we control our own destiny. We cre-ate our present. Did you know that? YOU CREATE YOUR PRESENT. The moment you are in right now…as you read this. You are creating it. With your thoughts, your actions, your beliefs. There is tremendous power in the energy inside of you. You are very powerful.

Where are you in life right now? Is it where you want to be?

No? CHANGE IT! It is a choice. It is all a choice. How you live and how you show up in life is a choice.

That is easy to say, isn’t it? So how do we do it?

First, consciously make the choice. Be willing to feel your emotions and be aware of your thoughts. This is where awakening begins. Recognizing old beliefs, becoming aware of the filters and conditioning that control our be-haviors is imperative now. It is time to wake up. When you become truly attuned to who you are inside and then match it to who you show up as in life is the beginning of the miracle of authenticity. It is the place of in-spiring positive action in your own life and in the world. With this willingness, change will happen.

Thoughts and emotions are energy racing within us. As you become will-ing to feel your emotions and become unattached to limiting thoughts, great change will happen. Your thoughts and emotions are extremely powerful. It is true what they say…thoughts be-come things. And it is true what YOU say. If you say so, it is. All too often, we say what we don’t mean. We show up and be who we don’t want to be. We focus on negativity, lack, fear. Is this what you want?

All to often, we play games with our friends that don’t serve us. Ever no-tice yourself trying in the game of try-ing to top each other with the bad that is happening in our lives? “You think that’s bad? Wait until you hear this!” Or in the game of blaming someone else? Or being a victim? Or of speaking negatively of others? Or of yourself?

We all do it. And it’s time to catch it. And to choose to change it. Try this experiment.

For 24 hours…do NOT allow a nega-tive word to leave your mouth. As the thoughts arise, notice them and re-place them with something positive. Notice how you feel. Notice how you act, how you respond to others and how they respond to you.

We are taught to not feel, we tend to not be aware. Like all habits, gaining awareness of thoughts and emotions takes conscious effort. It is worth it. After awhile it will become second na-ture like breathing. Negative thoughts don’t want to go away easily. They are cunning. Sly. They will show up when you least expect it. Don’t be attached to them. Shift towards feeling joy and thinking positive thoughts.

Turn off your autopilot. Take control of your life. Show up and create and live the life you desire…know you can be, do or have anything you want. For you already are that inside. You are al-ready everything you want to be. You deserve it. The time is now…it’s all we have. The past is gone. The future has

not been written. Live in the now…and awaken.

Change Your Water Change Your Lifeby Anna Federman

Good day everyone! In my search to help my husband find better health I found Kangen water. This has been life changing.

My husband suffered with depres-sion, chronic fatigue, brain fog and allergies. I suffered from heartburn and did not sleep well. My husband tried traditional medicine, but the medications and side affects were not good. He tried holistic medicine, which helped some. Then I took (dragged!) him to my friend’s house so we could find out about Kangen water. After his first 16 ounces of wa-ter the brain fog was gone. I just got a warm feeling (Hot flashes?), my body water feeling good circulation for the first time in a long time! We brought home four gallons of water and we tried to drink close to a gallon a day.

His depression was getting better, by the third night I slept like a log! Wow! I don’t remember the last time I slept so soundly. So we continued getting free water, and felt better everyday. We had to have our own machine. In the first month, I lost 10 pounds from the water cleansing toxins from my body, my husband lost 10 pounds and my daughter lost 11 pounds…just from drinking this water. We had not made any diet changes.

The more we learn about how im-portant it is to have your body in an alkaline state, the more grateful I am to my friend Yvonne for sharing this water with us. We have gone on to share the water with others and help with various health issues such as fibromyalgia. I know three women who are now off medication and liv-ing more productive lives. I’ve seen

diabe-tes get b e t t e r a n d people b a c k -ing off insulin; Parkin-s o n ’ s symp-t o m s s t a r t -ing to lesson and no more constipation. Daily we find people with different is-sues that we are helping. The water does not heal you, cleansing your body and getting it in an alkaline state let’s the body heal itself.

So what is Kangen water? Kangen water is produced through electroly-sis. It creates the pure, healthy, al-kaline drinking water which is rich in minerals, purged of impurities and ionized through electrolysis to obtain active hydrogen, which is abundant in “extra” electrons. These extra electrons impart strong anti-oxidant properties to the drinking water. In fact, the anti-oxidant potential of a single glass of Kangen water would cost several thousands of dollars to duplicate with vitamin supplements and they would never be absorbed by our body the way water is. The water molecules in the water most people drink are too large for the body to recognize, you only get 20 percent hydration. You know that feeling you get when you drink a large glass of water? It just sits in your belly.

That’s because the water molecules are too large for the body to recog-

nize. Through electrolysis, the water molecules are broken down small enough that your body can recognize them and you now get 100 percent hydration. After a full glass of Kan-gen water, no full belly feeling, you just feel great.

If you want to learn more go to my website and watch a few of the short videos www.ourgoodwatersite.info. Hopefully you can experience the life changing experience I and oth-ers have with Kangen water. If you like what you see and want to take my four week challenge contact me at [email protected]. My challenge is, if you are willing to commit to drinking a gallon of Kan-gen water a day for four weeks, I will make sure you have the water for four weeks. At the end of four weeks you let me know how your health has changed and how great you are feel-ing.

Blessings and good health to all that read this!Anna

One Child At A Timeby Cheryl L. NicksObserving and talking with our youth has always been a passion of mine. Those smiling faces with eyes of in-nocence turn my heart to mush.

During a visit to Ghana, West Africa our tour buses drove along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. There were chil-dren riding the waves and swimming like human fish in the ocean. We exited our tour buses at the Slave “Dungeons”, as they’re referred to by the native Africans. Above one door was a sign that read “THE DOOR OF NO RETURN” through which slaves were walked to waiting ships, packed like sardines in a can and stripped of their identity.

A large group of children ran up to greet us. Wet from swimming and clothed only in shorts, their smooth black skin stood out against the light colored sand. They spoke English well, and many of them asked for a dollar so that they could buy school supplies…they desperately wanted to go to school.

A little boy about 12 years old came up to me and asked my name, he started writing, then he handed me a sea shell on which he’d written To: Ms Cheryl From: Vincent; ok get out the tissue, my heart melted.

Then he asked if he could e-mail me when I returned home. I was surprised because we’d visited some of the villages and I didn’t see anything that resembled a computer. He then told me that he goes to the library to use the computers. That was nine years ago, and even though I was severely electronically challenged, I did have e-mail.After arriving home my daughter

tutored me in computer usage. A couple of weeks later I received an e-mail from Vincent, bring out the tissue again. We e-mailed each other a couple of times a month. We talked about school, his family and life in Africa.

We talked about America and his dreams. He soon started calling me his “American mom”.After a couple of years he asked if he could take my last name and he re-ferred to my daughters as his sisters.

I didn’t adopt him legally, but I adopt-ed him in my heart. For the past nine years I’ve mentored and supported him. He’s graduated from high school and has a desire for higher education. We now text and call each other several times a month. Every Christ-mas, Mother’s Day and many days in between, he calls to say, “I love you mom”.

I still have that sea shell on my alter.

My passion for our youth led me to speak at church youth groups, health centers and college campuses.

I wrote a poem on behalf of them titled:

Our Youth Our Future

As a neonatal nurse practitioner, I receive babies into the worldSome are little boys, some are little girlsSome are big and healthy and look so grandSome are tiny and weak; they fit into the palm of my handSome go to homes where they’re pampered, nurtured and loved

Some go to homes where they’re cursed at, abused and shovedThen they’re labeled those violent lost teensBut many are only emulating what they have seenYoung Blacks, barely men sport two tear drops on their faceThat may mean they’ve killed some-one, can’t they see how they’re destroying their race Many people look at them and say they’re not my problem, that’s on themWould you want your mother, sister or young son to be gunned down by him?In order for a boy to Be a man, he has to constantly See a manAre you willing to extend them your hand? Each one teach one my license plate saysMost of them can be saved with some love and some praiseHow many more have to be murdered and suturedOur youth may be a small part of our population, but they’re 100% our future.

We are not meant to merely sit around dreaming about things we can do and be. That’s a good place to start, but a poor place to stop. It is up to us to turn our dreams into action. We all have untapped gifts and talents inside us, and the way to develop our potential is by stepping out in faith and making the most of every opportunity.

It’s not how much you have, but it’s how you use what you have that matters. Are you making the most of your gifts and talents.

It is our beliefs that bring our dreams to light. When we step out in faith and use the talents and believe in ourselves that is when we create the actions that cause us to succeed.

It is what I call the perfect mix of belief and ignorance. Belief in you

and your dreams; and then being ignorant of what could go wrong. Don’t get stuck in the “how” of things, but instead get stuck in the power pictures of a dynamic future. It is then up to us to create a power-ful vision or image of what we want things to look like.

Our vision is our road map. It is our compass. It is the thing that keep us on track. And when we have a dynamic picture of where we are going (our vision), it is the thing that gets us back on track.

Some times when we are working on “our vision”, circumstances may show up in ways that are less than satisfying. “This is not my vision, this is not what I want my life to be......”

Often times those little things are lessons in commitment, self-dis-

cipline, and sacrifice, sticking with it even if we don’t want to, even if there was something more exciting going on somewhere else, even if we couldn’t see where our mundane service position is leading us.

Stick with it. Give it your all. Keep a good attitude and always be the best you can be right where you are.

Many people are not willing to go through the tough times. They’re not willing to stick it out. They’re not willing to use their talents when their efforts go unnoticed.

So many just sit back and wait to be given an opportunity. When we can have a good attitude about every-thing that we do, not just when the circumstances are fun and exciting. Those things that we really want to do will come with much greater ease.

Your gifts and talents will make room for you; that means if you’ll stick with it, be persistent, and con-tinue to use what has been given to you, those gifts will cause you to move forward and help you to make progress in your life. You will rise to the top.

You have a deep well of talent on the inside of you, but the only way to get that talent up and out of you is through persistence. You must be determined. You’ve got to learn not to embrace the obstacles but embrace the opportunities. When we stay with it and do our best, lis-tening and learning from the lessons the opportunities for our talents to shine will come upon us. Never give

up and never give in. The only way that you fail is when you quit. Allow that vision to guide you forward. Stay connected to your vision; stay focussed on your vision. Find ways to reconnect with your vision when life’s circumstances temporarily de-rail you. Be relentlessly persistent.

One of life’s greatest gifts is persis-tence and perseverance. Do not be afraid to embrace the opportunities that are in front of you. Be true to you. Do the work with excellence. Do the right thing the right way, even when no one was looking. You and your belief will be tested. With faithfulness, persistence, and dedication, your talents will have an opportunity to shine.

And I believe that are talents are al-

ways an opportunity to be of service. Service = success = true success = joy and happiness = real joy and happiness = love.

I look in my own circumstance with over thirty years of study and implementation and eleven years of commitment to Kandee G En-terprises and sharing the Vision Program. I feel as though I have been climbing this huge mountain, step by very careful step. Some-times I slipped back a bit, but always caught my footing and proceeded upward. I now stand on the top of this mountain and have an extraor-dinary view of the days ahead. Only now I stand surrounded by some of the most heartfelt, talented, amaz-ing people that I have ever met in my entire life. I am honored and blessed to have the opportunity to

spend my days surrounded by folks that help me share a message of hope. I know in my heart of hearts that these years have been spent in preparation to drive this information forward. Today I honor the path that I have been asked to walk and all those that walk it with me. I do have to tell you though, I stand here on this mountain top and take in this fresh air and this gorgeous view...is that on the horizon there are more mountains to climb.

It was game four of the “best of five” state volleyball championship series. My sister was the head coach and the team was down by 11 points. Momen-tum was definitely not in their favor. They had won the first two matches and lost the third. Without a doubt, they needed to close it out now or risk losing the championship, but they were only three points away from a game five. What followed in the next few minutes was nothing short of amazing! The pendulum swung in their favor and they came back to tie the game. After swapping points back and forth well past regulation, they finally won the state volleyball championship by two points!

It is never easy coming from behind to win. The road is long, hard, and seems like it goes on forever. You may be behind in your financial or weight loss goals, things may not be going well at work, and momentum might not be working in your favor right now - at least not in the right direction! I do not know what you’re going through, but if you are in need of staging your own impossible come-back, follow these steps:

1. Call Timeout. You need to pause for a few seconds, minutes, hours, or days depending on the situation. Do not try to dig yourself out of whatever it is - you normally end up just dig-ging a deeper hole. You need to stop moving so you can take an objective view of where you are at. This is the time to get out of the trees and see the forest.

2. Assess the Situation. Get the facts. Make sure you are dealing with the raw truth. Be honest with yourself about where things really are. What is the source of the problem? What is the root behavior? Do not confuse

symptoms with the source. You can-not move to step three until you know where you are starting from.

3. Form a Plan. At this point, you know what the ideal outcome is, and you clearly know where you are start-ing from to get there. One of the best ways to plan, especially when you are up against the clock, is to work back-wards. This is known in the corporate world as reverse engineering. Iden-tify the actions or behaviors that will be required to hit the goal. Determine to do whatever it takes - whatever it takes - to come back. If you are in a hole so deep it looks impossible to come back from, you most certainly need grit and a renewed commitment to success.

4. Execute. It has been my observa-tion that this is where most people fail in the process. The problem is rarely that they do not know what to do; it is that they do not do it! Dieters know they need to change their eating hab-its permanently. Spenders know they need to be fiscally responsible. Sales-people know they need to make more calls and follow up. The problem most employees, executives, and compa-

nies have lies in not doing what they already know to do. Why is this?

• It requires discipline. We are not accustomed to denying ourselves of desires and delayed gratification. • It requires sacrifice. We naturally want the path of least resistance and believe that when things go wrong, it is a sign that it is not meant to be. • It takes time. We want success like we want our popcorn - instant. You will not come back all at once (the volleyball team could not score eleven points on one play), but me-thodically following these steps will surely set the stage for a world-class comeback!

I love you and believe in you!
