OUR HISTORY

In the course of its history, The University of Northampton has changed signifi cantly – not only in the number of students it teaches, but also in the range and level of courses off ered and in the quality of performance in nationally benchmarked assessments of both teaching and research.Formed as Nene College in 1975 through the merger of Northampton’s Colleges of Education, Technology, and Art and Design, the College expanded rapidly. The fi rst department of Business & Management was established at this time. In 1977, when the Leathersellers College was transferred from London to Northampton, it became the national centre of education and training for the leather industry.

In 1993 the College incorporated the St Andrew’s School of Occupational Therapy followed in 1994 by the Sir Gordon Roberts College of Nursing and Midwifery to form the basis for the School of Health.

During the 1990’s, as fi rst Nene College then University College Northampton (1999), student numbers rose from around 4,000 to 9,000. In 1993 the College was granted taught degree awarding powers from the Privy Council and in 2005 was awarded full university status with research degree awarding powers becoming The University of Northampton. We now have over 13,000 full and part time students, with many from overseas, accessing courses from the Schools of Arts, Business, Education, Health, Social Sciences, and Science & Technology. The University operates from two campuses in Northampton and is investing millions in its estates and facilities in order to ensure students and staff have the best possible learning and research environment in the future.

“While having been in various management positions in a number of countries over the last 15 years I have never gained any formal management qualifi cation. On my recent appointment it was suggested that I enrol on the CMS to remedy this situation. A colleague completed the course at The University of Northampton last year and after discussing this as an option with him I chose to join the course.

The course is perfect for anyone who has not undertaken any formal education for a number of years and eases you back into study. I have found having the opportunity to discuss real events in a “safe” environment and the interaction with other participants particularly helpful and stimulating.

I would not hesitate to recommend this course to anyone looking to gain foundation knowledge of general management principles or as a step to either the DMS or all the way to the MBA.”

Darren Stenlake

Certifi cate in Management Studies

“Studying part time for a professional qualifi cation in Marketing helped me quickly progress from Assistant level to Offi cer grade, opening up a wide choice of job opportunities for me to apply for along with a major step-up in salary. The tutors at the University were very supportive and encouraging throughout the programme.”

GUEST SPEAKERS

Gary Hoff manCEO of Northern Rock and formerly Group Vice Chairman, Barclays plc

What is it that turns a competent manager into a great leader? Gary Hoff man was welcomed to Northampton Business School to try and answer that very question in front of an audience of students and academic staff .

Gary focused on the key themes of colleagues, customers, company and community. “A leader should create and champion their organisation’s vision, and convey an inspired sense of purpose behind it” he commented. “They also serve as champions of customer and colleagues, creating commitment and trust through clear direction and honest feedback on performance.”

Gary’s career with Barclays spans 24 years and includes many notable achievements including setting up both Barclays telephone and internet banking services.

Allan Fraser RushManaging Director of TEQUILA\ London

“I am completely delighted that The University of Northampton have the faith in me to make me a visiting Professor”.

“The simple reason for me involving myself more with the academic programme at Northampton Business School is to bring to the students a little of the real world. NBS does a great job in teaching the theoretical base of the discipline and trys to bring as much of the real world into the courses as possible, but the reality is that it is different out in ‘Agency land’. We use our own phraseology, we have our own processes and potentially for a young graduate entering our business, can be quite terrifying. Without the programme we have in place students could only imagine what life was like in an agency. What we have done is shown them. Not only how we work, but how we think, the disciplines we cover and how we work with one another. All of which will better position them to have a great chance of securing the marketing role they want.”

Claire Young Apprentice 2008 fi nalist and business woman

The University of Northampton’s Business School was delighted to host a guest lecture by Apprentice 2008 fi nalist and business woman Claire Young. Claire addressed an audience of Northampton Business School students, staff and University Alumni about her career, how to start your own business and what it was like to be in the boardroom with Sir Alan Sugar!

Claire, who runs her business Elegant Venues from Northamptonshire, commented:

‘’Since starting a business in Daventry, I have been keen to get involved in the local Northants community, so I was delighted when the University contacted me to visit and talk to the students at Northampton Business School. After thoroughly enjoying my university experience, I fi nd it refreshing to take a couple of hours out of the ‘business world’ to step back into education and appreciate the grounding it gave me. I work with universities across the country on a regular basis and the quality of Northants students I met during the event really stood out - they were articulate, proactive and passionate - I have no doubt they will go on to succeed!’’

Case study

“The University of Northampton off ered ACCA tuition at a time that was convenient for both me and my employer.

The University seemed to be well structured and organised and I have to say out of all the studying I have done in my life, this had defi nitely been my favourite to date. This would I am sure be partly down to the fact I was at a very focused stage in my life, and was keen to move forward and further my career, but also down to the lecturers I had.

The course itself was set out with plenty of time to cover the subject leaving a good portion of revision time at the end, which I fi nd so important. I found that I was going into my exams feeling confi dent..

The University also did that little bit extra than some places, for example holding an awards event each year to recognise the hard work and success of their students. I was lucky enough to receive an award for one of my grades in the fi rst year, and this opened up an opportunity for me to speak to a senior partner of Grant Thornton, one of the leading accountancy fi rms.

I was lucky enough to get off ered a job with them and I can now see my career ahead of me. Without a doubt this opportunity for me came from The University of Northampton and the lecturers working there, giving me the grounding and advice I needed to help me progress through my career as an accountant.

I have nothing but good words to say about the University and would happily recommend it to anyone thinking of studying there.”

MSc ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE from ACCA/CIMA/AIA/CIPFA/ICAEW

Accounting

Fully qualifi ed professionals in Accounting can Top up to a Masters degree provided their qualifi cation has been undertaken by examination.

Course Aims

The degree is designed to enhance your existing professional qualifi cation through exposure to strategic, fi nancial and management issues. Student will be expected to complete a dissertation that can be related to issues in the work place or more generally on topics that are currently topical in the fi nance research domain. The management of change is an essential area of expertise for many people seeking high level careers in the professions, commerce or academia. This course will provide students with a theoretical background and applied knowledge at Masters level. It is designed to enhance intellectual and transferable skills, including presentation, research, analysis and appraisal. On completion, postgraduate students will be conversant with theoretical issues in Management and fi nance, and be able to apply theory and practice to real issues faced in day-to-day operations.

Course Content

All students take modules in Managing Strategic Change and a dissertation (incorporating a research methods programme). Delivery is either on campus or by distance learning. For those taking the Top up programme delivered by distance learning individual students need to be prepared to study independently using CD ROM’s and/or

web based material with the support of a tutor utilising phone and email. Supervision of the dissertation is therefore available at a distance or in person for those within travelling distance of Northampton.

Managing Strategic Change

Particular regard within this module will be upon abilities and skills to conceptualise the strategic development of organisations – to recognise key strategic issues and to enhance abilities to manage strategic change. Strategic thinking is about processes of strategic management and change, and the ability to take holistic and long term views of the organisation in the context of its environment is an important attribute of a senior manager. The strategies adopted must have regard for the internal capabilities, power structures and culture of the organisation as well as the external opportunities and uncertainties exposed by environmental analysis.

Dissertation

An important feature of a Master’s programme is the development of a student’s ability to work independently. The dissertation module therefore starts with the introduction to research methods and provides knowledge of and insight into the main research tools available.

The subject area for the dissertation will be in the area of accountancy and fi nance and can be directly related to work or on a more theoretical topic of your choosing. Examples include accounting and ethics, auditing, corporate governance, internal control systems, risk management and market effi ciency. Students are required to identify a topic of their choosing, with guidance from the subject tutor, of suffi cient breadth and depth to undertake research and produce a dissertation of approximately 15,000 words.

PART TIME BUSINESS PROGRAMME• Foundation Degree Business (FdA)

• BA (Hons) Business and Management

Business

Course Aims

The programme is designed to provide a means for students who are in full time employment to study towards a variety of business qualifi cations. Employers emphasise the need for their employees to possess a range of business skills and to understand issues across the varied functional areas of business. Modules have been chosen to specifi cally meet these needs.

In addition to the increasingly multi disciplinary nature of work, many employees are encouraged to take an active role in the development of their careers. Work-based learning modules help in this regard by allowing students to refl ect upon theirlearning within the workplace; they also facilitate the academic recognition of tasks and projects completed at work.

All modules on the FdA Business are work-place orientated, ensuring that students develop a vocationally relevant understanding of business and acquire the essential skills required within commerce and industry in the 21st century. The Top up degree has a mix of vocational and more academic modules, consistent with the expectations of a UK honours degree.

Course Content

Students who wish to study to honours degree level can achieve this in four or fi ve years. They should enrol fi rst on the Foundation degree in Business (FdA). The Foundation degree involves three years of study, with four modules per year. There are a maximum of two taught modules per year to ensure that students only need to attend on one night per week.

Successful students from the FdA can then progress to the BA (Hons) Business & Management Top up course. This takes the form of distance learning modules, although students may substitute modules from the full-time programme if they wish and are able to attend University.

We recognise that there are many demands on the time of ambitious people, therefore, individuals who have successfully completed the fi rst two years of the FdA and who do not feel able to commit to three years of study can accept a “fallback” award of the HNC in Business.

It is also possible to register for a smaller number of modules each year and build to an award over an extended period.

All modules are subject to student demand and staff availability.

Mode of Attendance

During the fi rst three years (FdA) students must attend The University of Northampton for approximately three hours per week for 25 weeks. In addition students are also advised, on average, to set aside at least two additional evenings or half days per week for working through distance learning materials, work based assessments and completing reading and assessments relating to the taught modules.

Currently, attendance on the Foundation degree is as follows:Year 1 Monday eveningYear 2/3 Tuesday evening

These dates are subject to confi rmation. Workshops (approx. two per term) in relation to work-based learning modules will be scheduled on your normal day of attendance.

The Business and Management Top up course is either all distance-learning or a hybrid of distance-learning modules and modules from the full-time course. This may be completed in “standard” mode over 15 months or in “fl exible” mode over 27 months. Normally, it involves the completion of four distance-learning modules (Strategic Management, Accounting and Finance for Managers, Marketing Management and Critical Perspectives on Management). In addition, students must complete a Business Dissertation which requires a signifi cant amount of independent study, with advice and support from your supervisor.

3-5 years part time (the HNC Business is available after 2nd year)

Marketing

Course Aims

The degree is designed to enhance your existing professional qualifi cation such as the CIM Postgraduate Professional Diploma through exposure to strategic marketing, and management issues. Students will be expected to complete a dissertation that can be related to issues in the work place or more generally on topics that are currently topical in the fi nance research domain. The management of change is an essential areas of expertise for many people seeking high level careers in the professions, commerce or academia. This course will provide students with a theoretical background and applied knowledge at Masters level. It is designed to enhance intellectual and transferable skills, including presentation, research, analysis and appraisal. On completion, postgraduate students will be conversant with theoretical issues in Management and Marketing, and be able to apply theory and practice to real issues faced in day-to-day operations.

Course Content

All students take modules in Managing Strategic Change and a dissertation (incorporating a research methods programme). Delivery is

either on campus or by distance learning. For those taking the Top up programme delivered by distance learning individual students need to be prepared to study independently using CD ROM’s and/or web based material with the support of a tutor utilising phone and e-mail.

The subject area for the dissertation will be in the area of marketing and can be directly related to work or on a more theoretical topic of your choosing. Students are required to identify a topic of their choosing, with guidance from the subject tutor, of suffi cient breadth and depth to undertake research and produce a dissertation of approximately 15,000 words.
