What We Do Dual-Role Federal and State Missions

• Provide Ready Forces: Organize, man, equip, train and deploy globally in support of Federal missions as directed by the President and Secretary of Defense • Support to Civil Authorities: Organize, man, equip, train and deploy statewide as directed by the Governor of North Carolina in support of State missions • In Our Communities: Participate in local, state and national programs that add value to our communities

Dual Status Commander

• 2012 National Defense Authorization Act formalized the role of a Dual-Status Commander (DSC)

• The President must authorize, and the Governor must consent to, a specified officer

• A DSC has dual chains of command both through the President and the Governor

• Appointment of a National Guard DSC is the usual command control arrangement with both Reserve and Active Component subordinates

• DSC training is accomplished at U.S. Northern Command
