Hamfests need your support and attendance to survive!

President’s Column

Field Day has come and gone and I would like

to thank everyone for making it another successful

year. It takes a team to make it a success, and I

think we have the best team around. Setting up on

Friday eased a lot of the set up stress. Saturday

morning was still busier than I thought it was going

to be. A lot goes into putting on this big event and

I appreciate everyone’s help.

Yeah, all the bands were not alive, but 20 and

40 meters were alive and saturated with folks. I

was on 40 meters most of the time between phone

and digital, and it was open the entire twenty-four

hours. Chuck said 20 meters was slammed with

stations, and it was hard to hear and get through

with all the QRM.

Speaking of digital, for the first time ever we

finally solved the problem of running digital and

phone on the same band without interfering with

one another. Harrah! April made most of the digi-

tal contacts on 40 meters while others operated 40

meter phone on the radio right beside her. This

year the club successfully made a record 77 digital

contacts. Most were made on my homebrew 40/20

meter NVIS Inverted-V antenna on top of a 27 foot

painters pole. Awesome antenna! We will definite-

ly be using that antenna at future events. You can

find all the stats from this years event on page

four.

I would like to thank Karl Bowman, W4CHX, our

North Carolina ARRL Section Manager for stopping

by Sunday afternoon and visiting with us. Karl up-

dated us on the state of Amateur Radio and the

ARRL. He also took time to listen to our areas of

concern and answer questions. Karl is very pas-

sionate about Amateur Radio and wants the very

best for our hobby. Thanks goes to Karl for his

service.

We had our annual picnic Saturday afternoon,

and I would like to say a big thank you to Stephen

Russell, KK4RCN, for preparing the meat for the

picnic. It was a joy having Stephen’s daughter,

President’s Column continued...

Emma, there. She made a few contacts on the

GOTA station and was very excited. Look out VEs.

I’m sure Emma will be taking her test soon.

I also want to thank the Moore County Sherriff's

Office and the Health Department for loaning us

their mobile command units to operate out of. It is

wonderful being able to operate in the comfort of

air conditioning and having a kitchen to make a

midnight snack and cook breakfast Sunday morning

for the team. We are a club that is very fortunate

to have the support from our County’s Emergency

Management.

The Moore County Public Safety Department

brought and showed us their new communications

trailer. The trailer is very compact and can be set

up anywhere in minutes and provide reliable com-

munications in times of need. Very impressive!

Well that is the wrap-up of Field Day this year, I

cannot wait till next year. But, we’ll have more op-

erating events and projects to keep us busy the

rest of this year.
