What is the design process?
The truth is it’s really messy…….
With so many things that can go wrong……
But then so is medicine……“We look for medicine to be an orderly field of knowledge and procedure. But it is not. It is an imperfect science, an enterprise of constantly changing knowledge, uncertain information, fallible individuals, and at the same time lives on the line. There is science in what we do, yes, but also habit, intuition, and sometimes plain old guessing. The gap between what we know and what we aim for persists. And this gap complicates everything we do.”― Atul Gawande, Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science
So how do we make sense of it?……
Engineers Vs Designers
Different approaches to design
By taking the Human First Approach
It starts with Contextual Research…..
Detailed task analysis to gain insight….
And putting yourself in the shoes of the user….
And putting yourself in the shoes of the user allows you to gain insights……
Each students then generates a range of concepts through sketching and sketch modelling….
With `sketch modelling early and often…..
A range of concepts is presented…….
And the chosen concept(s) are further developed and evaluated…….
Before the final design specification is decided upon…..
And presented to our partners…….
Educating a new generation of human focused designers and innovators
