PREAMBLE

Civil Engineering acts at the core of infrastructure development. Sustainable infrastructure development is a new paradigm for improvement in quality of life and economic well being of a nation, India in particular. Due to exponential growth in population and economy, engineers are playing vital role in development of sustainable technologies for future generation with minimal utilisation of materials, energy at the same time conserving natural resources. Demands for energy, drinking water, clean air, safe disposal of waste & transportation will drive sustainable planning & infrastructure development. Furthermore, rehabilitation, reuse and optimisation of existing infrastructure are required to be consistent with the principles of urban sustainability, which calls for responsible design to balance social, economic and technological issues. This encompasses infrastructure renewal, long-term economic analysis of infrastructure, energy use and reduced infrastructure costs, protection of existing infrastructure from environmental degradation, material selection for sustainability, quality, durability and energy conservation, minimising waste, redesign of infrastructure in light of global dynamics, and remediation of environmentally depleted resources.

The need of hour is to set policies for sustainable design in short and long term. Anthropogenic activities have a significant impact on the world and each of us has responsibility for protecting future generations. Engineers and planners have a bigger role to set standards of design that benefit the environment and people. Sustainable development ties together concern for the carrying capacity based developmental planning of infrastructure and social challenges. The proposed National Convention & Seminar on “Role of Infrastructure for Sustainable Development” is an opportunity to researchers, technocrats, scientists academicians and field engineers to put forward their views and formulate an action plan for sustainable development through infrastructure growth.

OBJECTIVES OF IEI

The main objectives of the IEI are :

1. To disseminate and update engineering & technological knowledge.

2. To provide access to R&D activities and engineering practices including focusing on new developments, techniques, products, processes etc.

3. To highlight emerging engineering and technological trends.

4. To promote national and international cooperation in engineering and its commitment towards social objectives.

5. To provide necessary forum for professional, researchers and engineers of various disciplines to come together and exchange ideas /experiences.
