Choosing your Course for 2016
The Year 12 Course Booklet contains information for students and parents regarding the range of subjects offered by Karamu High School in 2016. The process of choosing subjects for study in Year 12 requires very careful consideration so that opportunities for study are not limited in later years. As you plan your course and choose your options check:
The entry criteria for each subject Whether the subject offers Achievement Standards or Unit Standards or a
combination The number of Achievement Standard credits generated by the subject The skills, content and understandings the subject will equip you with Your interests and abilities Your possible future career interests The skills you have and would like to develop Is your course flexible enough if your career goal changes?
Ability + Interest + Occupation = Option Choice
Investigate carefully all
subjects you are interested in
Make your final option choice
keeping in mind the
formula above
If you know what you would like to become ask your
Teachers or Careers Advisor about the options you need to take
If you don’t know what you want to
become, keep your options open by
not specialising too soon
What do you enjoy?
Do you like the work or is it just the teacher you like? Don’t do a subject just to be
with friends.
If you are interested in a subject you are
more likely to do well
How good are you at a subject?
Assessment Results will help you determine your ability
Discuss your ability level with
your teachers
Courses in Year 12
Year 12 students study:-
English There are two English courses for Level Two students – English and English Pathways Students will be placed in the most appropriate English course in line with the entry criteria for each course, after their NCEA results are released
Students who do not meet the entry criteria for Level Two English will be placed in Level One English or Level One English Pathways
5 other subjects at NCEA Level One or NCEA Level Two (chosen after carefully reading the Entry criteria)
Students who do not meet the entry criteria for Level Two subjects need to use the Level One Subject booklet to choose their subjects
And
1. Students may take only one of Sport Education or Physical Education. 2. Students may take only one of Hard Materials or Soft Materials Technology 3. Students may take only one Vocational Pathway Course. eg Early Childhood,
Hospitality, Tourism, Automotive, Building Industry etc. Entry to these courses will require approval.
4. Students may choose no more than two subjects with Portfolios or similar long term projects that require a lot of time eg Art, Photography, DVC, or Technology.
5. Students who have a genuine interest in the trades may be invited to join the Gateway
programme where they “work” alongside an employer for one day a week. Please discuss this option at your subject confirmation interview in January.
6. The school may not be able to offer a subject if the numbers of students wishing to study it are too small.
7. Please choose your subjects carefully as the Timetable structure and subjects offered
will be based on students’ choices made from the options you choose now. 8. Students will need approximately 16 credits in each subject to study it at Level Three. 9. Students’ final subject choice will be confirmed at their Subject Interview at the end of
January 2016.
NCEA
1. NCEA can be achieved by ACHIEVEMENT STANDARDS or by UNIT STANDARDS in Vocational Pathway subjects.
2. Unit Standards are not accepted by Universities. 3. Universities are now requiring students to have as many Merits and Excellences as
possible to gain entry to courses.
NCEA LEVEL ONE – requires 80 or more Level One credits which must include at least 10 Numeracy and 10 Literacy credits.
NCEA LEVEL TWO – requires 80 or more credits of which 60 must be at Level Two or higher. As well as Level One Literacy and Numeracy.
NCEA LEVEL THREE – requires 80 or more credits of which 60 must be at Level Three or higher.
NCEA Level Endorsement
Students who gain 50 credits at Merit or above will gain their NCEA with a Merit Endorsement.
Students who gain 50 credits at Excellence will gain their NCEA with an Excellence Endorsement.
Course Endorsement
Students gaining 14 or more credits at Merit and Excellence in a subject will gain a Merit Course Endorsement.
Students will receive an Excellence Course Endorsement if they gain 14 or more credits at Excellence level in a subject in one year.
For Course Endorsement at least three of the 14 credits must be from internally assessed standards and at least 3 from external assessment to demonstrate students are competent in both forms of assessment (except for Physical Education).
Reporting Not Achieved
Not achieved results are reported for both internally and externally assessed Standards. A number of subjects at Level Three require students to have gained UE Literacy (5 Writing and 5 Reading credits). These can be gained from Level Two English, History, Media, Geography, Drama etc.
Students should aim to gain as many Merits and Excellences as possible to prepare themselves adequately for Level 3 and tertiary study.
VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS
1. Vocational Pathways provide ways to gain NCEA Level Two, for students not intending to go on to University Study
2. There are 6 Vocational Pathways
Creative Industries eg: Media, Art, Performing Arts
Primary Industries eg: Farming, Horticulture
Service Industries eg: Retail, Hospitality, Tourism
Social Community Services eg: Early Childhood
Manufacturing Technology eg: Automotive, Digital Technology
Construction Infrastructure eg: Building
3. To achieve NCEA Level Two in a particular Vocational Pathway students require:-
60 Level Two credits from recommended standards for the pathway (see subject booklet)
20 Sector Related Vocational Pathways Standards (see Vocational Pathway section of the subject booklet)
The Vocational Pathways make it easy for employers to see if students have the skills they are looking for Credits towards Vocational Pathways appear on the NZQA Login and Kamar Further information is available at:- http://youthguarantee.net.nz/vocational.pathways Note: Sector related and recommended standards are currently being refined and
some minor changes may occur later in 2015.
