The HCEHF is a stand alone qualification and is awarded by the University of Limerick. It is placed as aLevel 6 Major Award on the National Qualifications Framework (NFQ) and Level 5 on the EuropeanQualifications Framework (EQF). The HCEHF leads to a B.Sc. in Exercise & Health Fitness, which is placedat Level 8 on the National Qualifications Framework (NFQ) and Level 6 on the European QualificationsFramework (EQF).

Recognition: 60 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) Credits towards the Diploma/B.Sc. Exercise &Health Fitness through a flexible learning pathway.

The HCEHF is placed at Level 6 Major on the National Qualifications Framework (NFQ) and Level 5 on theEuropean Qualifications Framework (EQF).

Aim:

Year 1: Students who successfully complete year one are educated and trained to provide instruction in exerciseto music, step aerobics, circuit and resistance training. Equally important is their ability to assess fitness levels

and to plan safe, effective and enjoyable exercise programmes for individuals or groups of all abilities.

Year 2: Provides students with the opportunities for specialisation within the exercise and fitness industryin areas such as Personal Training, Strength & Conditioning for Sports Teams, Pilates & Corrective Exercise

or Active Aging for the Older Adult.

Programme Delivery:

HCEHF Year 1: The programme can be undertaken by day at the University of Limerick. (Alternatively studentscan register for the Certificate in Exercise and Fitness (CEHF) part time programme at other locations andtransfer to Year Two of the HCEHF following successful completion of the CEHF or equivalent.)

Students will have the option to exit after Year One with the CEHF or continue onto Year Two of the HCEHF.

HCEHF Year 2: Students will be required to select their specialist courses for for Year Two in June of YearOne. Specialist courses are delivered via eLearning, blended learning and/or with face to face contact.Specialist Courses are offered in certain locations only, such as Limerick or Dublin. (Venues subject to change

each academic year)

Entry Requirements Year 1:

Applicants should hold the Irish Leaving Certificate with minimum Grade D3 in five Ordinary Levelsubjects (including Maths, Irish or another language, and English) OR an approved equivalentqualification. Other standards within Leaving Certificate or other levels of education will be consideredunder the NCEF/ UL Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) Scheme*.All qualification documentation must be submitted in the English language.Non EU Nationals must submit a Study Visa, copies of passport documentation and proof ofemployment for the last 5 years (Please note originals may be requested)Applicants should have a commitment to encouraging others to take part in healthy activity, a desireto become a safe and competent instructor and have a confident, enthusiastic and adaptable personality.Experience of participation in a fitness activity or a particular sport is important whilst good rhythmand co-ordination is also desirable. Applicants should have good communication skills and enjoyworking with people. Selection for the programme will be based on the Application Form. NCEFreserve the right to interview if required.

Entry Requirements Year 2:

Successful completion of Year One (all modules 1-10 must be successfully completed)OrCertificate in Exercise and Health Fitness or an approved equivalent qualification. Application forequivalency is processed through the NCEF/UL Recognition of Prior Learning*

*Note: All RPL applicants will be required to complete a detailed Portfolio of Learning. This document isavailable from NCEF Head Office. Please note an RPL fee applies and on successful acceptance the fee isdeducted from the overall programme fee.

2. Lifestyle, Fitness & Wellness

An overview of the reasons for choosing a healthy and active lifestyle

Initial involvement in and continued adherence to physical activity

including personal and social factors

Special populations, pregnancy, obesity, back pain and older groups

Stress and stress management

Basic nutrition, the importance of balanced eating habits, the

relationship between energy input, expenditure and body composition

All modules are examined on a continuous basis and may include boththeoretical and practical elements of assessment. Candidates mustsuccessfully complete Modules 1-9 in order to take Module 10. Theprogramme includes a research project and a work experience element.Student must successfully complete all modules to continue to year two.

Students must earn 60 ECTS credits within one academic year. Forexample, Autumn registered students start in September and are requiredto earn 60 ECTS credits within the Autumn and Spring Semester of thatacademic year.

PART-TIME OPTION: Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness (CEHF) Limerick One Year Part Time Programme 2014/2015

Autumn 2014: The CEHF course is available as a weekend and a day programme of study.

The Weekend course is provisionally structured to take place Friday evening 7pm to 10pm and Saturday from 10am to 5.15pm. All bank holidays are scheduled free.

The Day course is provisionally structured to take place on Wednesday and Thursday between 10am to 5.15pm. There may be a maximum of three weekdays per week (TBC).

FULL-TIME OPTION: Higher Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness (HCEHF) Limerick Two Year Full Time Programme (Year 1) 2014/2015

Autumn 2014: The HCEHF is a two year full-time programme of study. Year 1 sessions are provisionally structured to take place Monday to Friday between the hours of 10am-5.15pm inclusive of tutorial hours.

Provisional Programme Fee for 2014/2015 for CEHF and HCEHF YEAR 1 is €2,695.00 (May be subject to change)

Option 1

If course fees are paid in full (inclusive of non-refundable deposit of €995) on submission of acceptance documents to the NCEF

Head Office, a €100.00 discount will apply to the full course fees (i.e. €2,595 due in full on acceptance of your place on the

course).

Option 2

€995 non-refundable deposit on submission of acceptance documents to the NCEF Head Office. Balance of €1,700 due to the

NCEF Head Office ten working days prior to programme commencement (due on or before Friday 19th

September 2014).

Option 3 - Payment Plan Option

€995 non-refundable deposit on submission of acceptance documents to the NCEF Head Office.

2nd

instalment of €1,100.00 is due before 24th

September 2014 via cheque, postal order, bank draft payable to the NCEF or via

credit/debit card.

2 monthly instalments via direct debit of €300.00. Monthly instalments due on 24th

October 2014, 24th

November 2014.

Please note that once students are registered all fees paid are non-refundable. Payments to the NCEF Head Office acceptable via cheque, postal order, bank draft made payable to the NCEF or via

Programme Providers

NCEF programmes are provided by approved independentCertifiedProviders both industry based and those based ineducational establishments. NCEF Education and Training(NET) is the official NCEF Certified Provider based at HeadOffice in UL.

Programme Locations

Since the initiation of the scheme in 1987, the NCEF has placed astrong emphasis on work-based learning. Many NCEFprogrammes, therefore, are based within operational fitnessfacilities where students, while training, gain onsite knowledge ofbeing part of the environment of an industry based fitnessfacility.

NCEF programmes are located nationwide. Venues include Cork,Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Kilkenny, Portlaoise and Waterford.
