Overall ResultsIn 2015, the average score of eighth-grade students in North Carolinawas 281. This was not significantly different from the average score of281 for public school students in the nation.The average score for students in North Carolina in 2015 (281) waslower than their average score in 2013 (286) and was higher than theiraverage score in 2000 (276).The percentage of students in North Carolina who performed at orabove the NAEP Proficient level was 33 percent in 2015. This percentagewas not significantly different from that in 2013 (36 percent) and wasgreater than that in 2000 (27 percent).The percentage of students in North Carolina who performed at orabove the NAEP Basic level was 69 percent in 2015. This percentage wassmaller than that in 2013 (75 percent) and was not significantly differentfrom that in 2000 (67 percent).

This performance gap was notsignificantly different from that in 2000 (35 points).In 2015, Hispanic students had an average score that was 20 pointslower than that for White students. Data are not reported for Hispanicstudents in 2000, because reporting standards were not met.In 2015, male students in North Carolina had an average score that wasnot significantly different from that for female students.In 2015, students who were eligible for free/reduced-price school lunch,an indicator of low family income, had an average score that was 31points lower than that for students who were not eligible. Thisperformance gap was not significantly different from that in 2000 (28points).
