From Nursery dancing to Junior discos, from gardening in the rain to sports day in the sun, from playtime fun

to lessons in classrooms, sports hall, music room, science room and hall, whatever Church High girls are doing they tackle it with lively enthusiasm. It was so pleasing to see how this was recognised in our Inspection Report earlier this year.

The Inspectors found that, “throughout the school pupils are hardworking, happy learners.” They also recognised that “pupils of all ages have outstanding attitudes to their learning, their classroom behaviour is one of the strengths of the school, they are excellent learners.”

I am sure it will come as no surprise to many of you that, “they especially excel in speaking, where they show confidence without affectation and articulate well.” So it is clear that our aim of giving every girl a voice, is fulfilled! One of the many strengths of Church High is how every girl is seen as an individual and that those individual strengths and characteristics are applauded. Again this was recognised by the Inspectors. “A strength of the curriculum is how well it can be tailored to the needs of the individual.”

It goes without saying that the excellent academic achievements of girls from three years old to eleven were highly praised by the Inspection Report and we were delighted with the Early Years’ Inspection Report, covering Nursery and Kindergarten, where they were found to be “Outstanding” in all areas. What pleased me even more was the fact that the Inspectors recognised and admired the very special atmosphere here at Church High.

“ The girls have a sense of belonging and know that they are cared for very well.”

“Pupils treat each other, staff and visitors with warmth.”

The Inspectors were also very impressed by the parents’ support for the school which they commented was exceptional.

Indeed this was highlighted by a comment made to me by a parent who remarked that she viewed Church High as an extension to her own family!

This year has seen major changes to the outdoor areas of school. We were determined to make the most of every inch of the school grounds and with the help of parents

and grandparents a significant difference was made to some overlooked outdoor areas. A garden was created which we will now put to good use. The most dramatic impact to the outdoor space is the mural in the covered area produced by Liz Million with input from every girl in the school, which also makes a very good cover to this year’s magazine.

This year has passed by so quickly and as always I am so impressed by all the girls achieve during the course of a school year. Thank you to all those concerned; girls, staff, family and friends for making this another wonderful year at Church High.

Thank you to the staff for all they do and to Mrs Scott and Paul Rea for displaying the year’s events so well in this magazine which I am sure you will enjoy reading.

The cover photograph depicts the fantastic mural by Liz Million and all the Junior School community.

Royal Wedding Fever Hits Church High NurseryWe thoroughly enjoyed dressing up and playing in our Royal Wedding Corner. Grace was really disappointed when Prince William and Kate Middleton were too busy to come and visit us! After having to pretend to eat, we joined with Kindergarten and had the real thing at our Royal Wedding tea party. We had such fun and the most delicious food to eat.

Children of the WorldThis year our Infant Nativity focused on Christian traditions around the world. Each angel visited a country and brought children to visit Jesus in his manger. They told him how they celebrated Christmas and what they wore. We found out lots of new things!they celebrated Christmas and what they wore.

The Donkey who came for DinnerOne morning when I woke up I heard an “Eee-aw”. I saw a big fluffy donkey. It said,

“Should I go shopping for you?”

I said, “ok,” so it went shopping for me. I wondered what it would buy. When it got back it showed me what it had bought. It had got sausage, peas and all sorts of things.

Then I decided to have a picnic and the donkey said “Yes.”

Just then the zookeeper came. I said to the zookeeper,

“Could the donkey come again?”

The zookeeper said, “Yes.”

Wonderful WritingThe Selfish HippoOne day there was a very selfish hippo. He looked mischievous and lazy. He lived in a very dirty river in a deep, deep forest.

One day some animals came to visit the big dirty river. They were splashing in the river when the hippo woke up! He slowly went over and they started to run away. He was on his way back from the river, when he saw something in the water. So he said,

“Get out of my river!”

“But…but…,” said the animals.

“No! Get out of my river,” said the hippo. So the animals came out of the river.

The selfish hippo was going to come back when he stood on a staple. He had started to cry when a chipmunk came by. None of the other animals were going to go close to the hippo but the chipmunk went and found the staple in the hippo’s foot. So he pulled and pulled and the staple came out.

The hippo was so happy that he said all the animals could go in the river. Then they cleaned the river and the hippo gave the chipmunk some nuts. After that they all went home for tea. The hippo was really happy that he had a new friendship.

By Rosanna Carrick-Daly, Preparatory

Lucie the Selfish ChipmunkDeep in the jungle in a big nut tree lived a selfish chipmunk called Lucie. When ever Lucie saw other animals near her tree, she said,

“No, they are MY nuts. Go away and never come back!”

The lion, who was king of the jungle, went back into the middle of the jungle and said,

“Do not go to the big nut tree. Lucie the chipmunk will tell you to go away.”

“Ok,” said the animals and they went back home.

In the middle of the jungle the next morning, everyone heard a big groan. They looked over the hedge and there was the selfish chipmunk. Her mouth was swollen up. None of the animals wanted to help her, but a little rabbit hopped into the chipmunk’s mouth and saw a crack in one of her teeth and she pulled and pulled until the tooth came out.

“Bury the tooth please and I will have a present for you,” said the selfish chipmunk. So the rabbit buried the tooth, and when she came back the chipmunk had a big juicy nut for her and she said, “Thank you,” to the rabbit.

Then Lucie invited all the animals to the tree and had a party. That night she went to bed feeling very happy about her new friends.

The Monkey who came to SupperWhen I went up to my room I found a monkey and he was swinging on the curtains. I went downstairs to tell my Mummy. But I couldn’t find my Mummy. Then I found her and I went back to the kitchen. That cheeky monkey had eaten all the bananas and he had drunk some water. He said, “Thank you very much.”

He went away and I never saw the monkey again.

Once again the School Council have been working hard to make sure your voices are heard! We began the year thinking about how we could make sure everyone was involved in playtimes and the idea of a ‘Friendship Stop’ was put forward. Several meetings later this had evolved into the ‘Flag of Friendship’ that you see flying in your Infant and Junior play areas today. The whole school was involved in the development of the concept and the School Councillors contacted various flag makers in order to secure the most competitive quotes and place orders.

In the New Year the School Council was involved in thinking about themes for our new mural. We polled forms to come up with suitable suggestions and their ideas have transformed our covered area.

There are several ‘irons in the fire’ now, awaiting the input of a new set of Councillors in the forthcoming academic year. As we hand over responsibility to them, we are confident that they will ensure the fantastic work of the School Council continues and wish them every success in the future.

Eco SchoolThe Junior School formed its first Eco Council this year. The elected girls, parents and a grandparent met on a regular basis carrying out an audit and recommending targets for action as we progress towards the Green Flag Award.

The areas considered included energy usage, waste management, recycling, reusing, water usage, litter minimisation, travel, healthy living and global issues. Most importanty, we considered the development of the school grounds, not only to make them an enjoyable place in which to play and learn, but also in terms of their biodiversity.

The whole School and many parents thoroughly enjoyed the Gardening Week where we transformed outdoor areas and filled many pots with colourful plants and equipment which had been so kindly donated. We are looking forward to continuing this work next year.

Wonderful Writing

The Birth of the Wind(A creation myth)When the world was very young there lived a giant with a cold. One day there was a knock on the door. The giant opened the door. It was the rabbit. He was there to ask if he could move his home to the woods. The giant said, “OK.” He climbed down his ladder and travelled to the rabbit’s home. On the way the giant sneezed. There was a whistling noise - it went all over the sky. The rabbit and the giant were getting colder and colder. The giant asked, “Why is it cold?” The rabbit said, “because you are sneezing!” and that’s how the wind began.

My Favourite Lip-smacking MealWhat is my best meal? My best meal is Yorkshire pudding and beans! When I eat it it makes my blood boil! I normally have it each Wednesday. My mum makes it and it is...superb. It smells like spring when the flowers are in bloom and the bells are ringing. If this meal was a movie it would be timeless and emotional. I love Yorkshire pudding and beans because it is crispy but soothing. If you want to try the meal all you need is an oven, a Yorkshire pudding and beans.

Saffron Sims-Brydon J1Av

The Birth of a Rainbow(A creation myth)One day a long time ago there was a fox who was searching for its prey. It had just seen a rabbit hop out of its burrow so the fox pounced onto it. When the fox’s teeth clutched the rabbit lots and lots of colours exploded out of the rabbits body and shot into the sky! The fox stared at it in wonder and decided to give it a name. Finally the fox decided to call it a rainbow. And that is the story of the birth of the rainbow.

Jack traded his cow for beans. His mother was furious, throwing them out the window. Jack climbed the beanstalk. He walked to the giant’s castle and stole money. The next day he stole a chicken. He returned, stole a harp and woke the giant. The giant could not keep up.
