Dear Parent/Guardian:
The federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 assures that all students have the opportunity to succeed in
school, and sets student performance targets that all public schools must meet. Title I schools that do not meet
these targets over time are called Program Improvement schools. A list of eligible schools is provided in this
booklet. All schools in Program Improvement for more than one year must offer reading, mathematics, and/or
science tutoring to their students outside of regular school hours. NCLB Act of 2001 provides options to parents of
students attending schools that have been categorized as a Program Improvement for two years or more: 1)
parents/guardians can decide to have their children participate in SES Free Tutoring or; 2) Program Improvement
School Choice (PISC). More information is available on the district website. Attending a Year 2 or more Program
Improvement school is one of the eligibility requirements. Additionally, Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District is
required by federal law to give priority in placing students with tutors to the lowest achieving students from low-
income families (eligible for free or reduced meals). Only those students who meet the above requirements will
be placed with their selected provider for tutorial services.
This booklet contains information about free tutoring available to help improve your child’s academic performance.
It describes the programs offered by the organizations/agencies that have been approved by the California State
Board of Education and that have contracted with Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District to provide tutoring
services. These organizations/agencies are called providers. To help you decide if you wish for your child to
participate in free tutoring services, and to select a provider for your child, please consider the following:
READING OR MATHEMATICS?
Providers offer tutoring in reading (English/language arts), and/or mathematics. Ask your child’s teacher or
principal to help you determine the subject in which your child could benefit from tutoring. Tutoring in one subject
or both subjects may be available for your child, depending upon the SES Provider you select.
LOCATION
Use this booklet to determine where the providers are located, so that you may select a provider that is the most
convenient for you and your child. You may have to provide transportation from your child’s school to the
provider’s location. Tutoring may be offered at District schools. The District does not provide transportation to
provider locations. Some tutors offer in-home or online services. If you select a provider that offers online tutoring
services, verify with the provider that they have a computer available for your child (if needed) and that you have
the appropriate Internet connection to access their services. This information is also available on pages 4-7of this
brochure.
DAYS/TIMES
Providers offer tutoring services on various days and times. Check with the providers to determine if the
days/times they offer tutoring are convenient to you and your child. Also verify with the provider the total
number of hours of tutoring they offer to each child. This information is also available on pages 4-7 of this
brochure.
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Check with the providers to determine how they provide instruction (e.g., one-on-one, small group, large group,
etc.) to help you determine which provider will best meet your child’s needs. This information is available on
pages 4-7of this brochure.
3
STAFF QUALIFICATIONS
Check with the providers about their staff’s qualifications and training. Some providers require their instructors to
have teaching credentials/licenses, others require their tutors to be college graduates, and some may have other
requirements. This information is also available on pages 8-11 of this brochure.
If you decide that you want your child to receive free tutoring, complete the 2015-2016 FREE PARENT
REQUEST FOR SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION APPLICATION that has been provided. An application
may also be obtained at your child’s school or on the English Learners and Instructional Support Department
portion of the District’s website.
1. Complete all of the student and parent information indicated.
2. Select three (3) providers and write the organization’s number and name for first, second, and third
choice.
3. Sign your name where indicated.
4. Write the date where indicated
Return the 2015-2016 FREE PARENT REQUEST FOR SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION APPLICATION
no later than 4:00 P.M., OCTOBER 16, 2015.
No applications will be processed after this date. You may also deliver the 2015-2016 FREE PARENT REQUEST
FOR SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION APPLICATION in person to your child’s school or to Fairfield-Suisun
Unified School District’s English Learners and Instructional Support Department 2490 Hilborn Road, Fairfield, CA
94534.
The provider that you select for your child will contact you directly to verify your child’s enrollment and establish
the date free tutoring for your child will begin. If you are not contacted by the first week in December, please
contact the English Learners & Instructional Support Office. Federal funds that pay providers for their
services are limited. If the requests for free tutoring exceed available funding, priority will be given to the
lowest-performing students who qualify for free or reduced price meals at school.
If you have any questions or need additional information regarding SES tutoring services, please call English
Learners and Instructional Support Department, 707-399-5023, or your child’s school.
Sincerely,
Sasha Begell
Assistant Director, English Learners and Instructional Support Department

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Applying for SES Free Tutoring does not guarantee that your child will receive services.
Due to limited funding, eligible students will be prioritized based on their previous years
test scores. Students without test scores in the system may be placed in a slot designated
for random placement.
Please understand that if your child is enrolled in SES Free Tutoring, they are under
contract to participate in the program. If your child does not participate for 60 consecutive
days, they will be withdrawn from the program. It is important that you keep your contact
information current with your child’s school so that the tutoring company your child
enrolls with can reach you. Lastly, please ensure that your student attends all tutoring
sessions and completes their program.
