Gordon Meister, president, called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. and he and past president Bob O’Connor led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Gordon introduced the current trustees and acknowledged their contributions to the success of two programs. Lou Bordonaro, treasure, gave the financial report (see page x). Lou was then recognized for his six years of service as trustee and treasurer. Gordon presented Lou a $50 gift certificate for his ser-vice.

He then gave his report on the state of NCR REA focusing on membership levels, recruiting new3 members, and what we have to do to keep REA viable. Lou Bordonaro, treasurer, gave a financial report.

Barbara Swinger was presented to the members. An election followed and Barbara was approved. (See photos and bio on page 8.)

Ned Greene, vice president and interim general counsel and secretary gave an update on NCR business and products. Mr. Greene gave an exceptional report on the “new NCR’ and the activities focusing on NCR’s presence in the self-service industry.

Gordon then awarded a number of door prizes and the meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.

To provide more opportunity for attendees to network, there were three after-meeting events. 1) a buffet lunch; 2) a putting contest; and 3) a tour of the NCR Archive.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

We were delighted with the great turnout for the Annual NCR REA Annual Meeting held on September 24, 2009, at the NCR Country Club. (See article on cover page for more details). With all the turmoil from the news that NCR was moving the corporate headquarters to Georgia, we did have some initial concerns about the attendance. I want to per-sonally thank all that attended, and look forward to seeing you and hopefully many other members at next year’s meeting.

This is actually a good news report, because there are many positives from some of the recent happenings: • Over 75% of our members paid their annual dues promptly in Sep-tember • Many members also included a donation to further help in defraying REA costs-Over $3,000.00 has been received • The initial response to use the option to use the electronic version of the directory versus. a printed copy in 2010 was over 20%.

• Five percent selected the elec-tronic newsletter vs. the printed copy. This will result in a combined annual savings of almost $2,000. The Board of Trustees met in Octo-ber for our annual planning meeting. We all agreed that these combined actions of our members demon-strates their ongoing commitment to the REA and a strong desire to keep the association financially sound .On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we thank you for your ongoing support.

The Board of Trustees and the vari-ous members that volunteer to create and deliver our programs to you are committed to serving our members with quality and timeliness of the key programs.

Sincerely yours, Gordon Meister President

Mr. Patterson believed in teaching through the eye. He considered the use of pictures a primary tool to accomplish that. The old glass negatives of the Photography Department date back to 1887 when the Company was still located in the Calla-han Power Building in downtown Dayton. Early pictures were used in sales meeting, brochures, advertising, and educational meetings.

Before construction began for the new factory at the top of South Main Street hill, Mr. Patterson had a photograph taken of the undeveloped land. In the forefront of the picture was a split rail fence. A new photograph of the construction pro-gress was taken for each new publication of the Hustler (NCR Newsletter). The split rail fence was always in the forefront as a point of reference. Everyone, especially those customers and NCR people outside of Dayton, could follow the pro-gress. As the factory rapidly grew, its progress was photographed in the same way.

As early as the third CPC Convention in 1888, Mr. Patterson was not only using pictures at the corpo-rate level but was beginning to teach the use of pictures in sales. On the CPC program that year, the agenda listed: “...the use of the photo in sales material for stores, bars, and hotels.”

In 1892, Mr. Patterson began improving the new factory’s surrounding neighborhood, He increased the use of photographs for his educational pro-grams to the residents by placing the pictures in stereopticon slides. Soon slides were being used to supplement pictures across the Company.

In 1905, a camera with a parachute was attached to a balloon. When the picture of the factory was taken, the balloon was released and the parachute returned to the ground with the camera. Aerial photography had come to NCR.

The NCR Photography Department was started in 1895 in an unusual way. A steamer trunk was left

in the Advertising Department for some time. They knew that it belonged to Mr. Patterson but no one knew what was in it. When advised about the trunk, Mr. Patterson ordered them to open it and get back to him. Upon opening the trunk, Mr. Otto Nelson discovered a new camera with tripod and all the necessary accessories. When advised, Mr. Patterson told them he thought he had lost the camera on his travels before returning to Dayton. He further ad-vised Nelson to put the camera together, take some pictures around the factory, and bring them to him. Before Mr. Nelson could tell him that he knew nothing about photography, Mr. Patterson was gone. Nelson did as instructed and with much difficulty assembled the camera, learned how to use it, and took the requested photographs. He had them de-veloped in downtown Dayton and presented them to Mr. Patterson. Over the next few weeks, Mr. Patter-son ordered numerous photographs. Upon seeing the invoice from the downtown picture developer, Mr. Patterson ordered Nelson to begin developing his own pictures. Nelson told him that he didn’t have a darkroom and knew nothing about develop-ing pictures. Mr. Patterson said, “I’ll find a place for a darkroom and you’ll learn the work.” A small shed was converted into a darkroom and furnished with the latest in photo development equipment and supplies. By default, Nelson had become the first Company Photographer and head of the new depart-ment.

In 1897, Mr. Patterson saw a motion picture of a parade in New York City. By 1901, he was using film in the same manner as he had the pictures and slides; for presentations, advertising, and education. As one might expect, Mr. Nelson became responsi-ble for NCR’s entry into the movie business.

Mr. Patterson embraced anything that enhanced education. One must wonder how he would have reacted to the advent of television, personal com-puters, the internet, and cell phones. One thing for sure, he would have been among the first to maxi-mize the use of all of them in the business world.

BECAUSE YOU ASK

NCR Dayton Properties

A number of NCR REA members have contacted REA trustees with concern about an early Novem-ber article in the Dayton Daily News. This article addressed the physical NCR properties in Dayton being left behind as a result of moving the NCR headquarters to Georgia. Mentioned were the NCR Headquarters building, Old River Park, and Moraine Farm. Also listed was the NCR Historical Archive. The article continued by discussing NCR’s efforts to sell these properties with a quote from an NCR spokesman confirming that effort. The inclusion of the Archive in the article may have been a bit misleading. In the 1990s, NCR moved its historical archive to the Montgomery County Historical Society (MCHS later became part of Dayton History). At that time, NCR entered into a long term contract with MCHS. With the contract, NCR retained ownership and control of the Archive while finan-cially supporting MCHS to house, conserve, and document the collection. Recently, NCR ex-tended that contract with Dayton History for an additional two years. With one year remaining on the current contract, the extension keeps Dayton History as the custodian of the Archive until late in 2012. This act alone would indicate that NCR is not now, nor in the near future, actively looking to sell the Archive.

In late 2012, at the end of the contract, NCR ap-pears to have three options. (1st) NCR can enter into a contract extension with Dayton History; re-taining ownership and continuing to finance Day-ton History’s work with the Archive. (2nd) NCR can terminate financial support to Dayton History and remit ownership of the Archive to Dayton His-tory. Without financial support, Dayton History probably would not keep the collection without having ownership. (3rd) NCR can terminate finan-cial support to Dayton History and physically take possession of the Archive. Although NCR REA cannot speak for NCR nor Dayton History, option one would indicate NCR doesn’t plan to sell the collection, with option two it is safe to say that Dayton History would never participate in the selling of such an important part of Dayton’s history, and with option three there would be no way of knowing the Company’s in-tentions. Many of you may have spent time in the dorm rooms at CTEC (Corporate Technical Education Center) in Dayton during your NCR career. You may recall that the center was sold to Dayton Christian Schools. The following was taken from their August 2009 newsletter Generations.

“Demolition began on two of the dorms at the DCS [Dayton Christian Schools www.daytonchristian.com] campus last month. Nothing has gone to waste though. Furniture was given either to employees or to other Christian ministries around the country. Our [DCS] Facilities Services employees removed and sold the scrap metal. Alumni parent Tom Tobias removed the wood doors and shipped them to a hospital in Africa where they will be made into desks, tables, and counters. The dorm demo [lition] is part of Phase 1 of the Gym Project to install athletic fields and build a gym [nasium] at DCS.”
