It’stimetogettoknowNDHSAADistinguishedStudent,MadelynJeanfromHankinsonHighSchool,nicknamedMadi.HerfamilyconsistsofherparentsMarkandKristi,alongwithtwobrothersAndrewandAlex.
Madi isveryinvolvedinschoolactivities, including:volleyball,basketball, track,studentcouncil,band,choir,dramaaswellasspeech.Needlesstosaysheisaveryactiveyounglady.
Inschool,Madi’sfavoritesubjectischemistry,andsheisgoingtopursueadegreeinChemi-calEngineeringattheUniversityofNorthDakota.Oncefinishedshewillthencontinueontomedicalschooltogainadegreeinpediatricsurgery.In10yearssheseesherselfpursuinghercareer.
Whensheisabletofindsomesparetime,Madienjoysreadingandeating.TimeseemstobeoftheessenceasMadialsofindstimetodonatetohercommunitythroughserviceorganizations.SheenjoysspendingtimehelpingwiththeUnitedWayDayofCaring,RelayforLife,CaresforCanceraswellasLocksofLove.
IfMadiwereinchargeofourcountryprioritynumberonewouldbetolowerthecostofcollegetuitionassheseesitputsalargeburdenonouryouthastheygraduateintotheworkforce.Hernumberonecharacteristicofagoodleaderisoptimism;whileherbiggestpetpeeveishearingpeoplechew.Madi’sperfectvacationwouldbetoItalyandshecouldnotgoonedaywithouthermusic.
Whenasked,“Ifyoucouldshareamealwithany4individualslivingordeadwhowouldtheybe?”MadirepliedshewouldlovetoeatwithAlbertEinstein,RichardFeynman,Thor,andhermother.Madi’sfavoriteholidayisthe4thofJulybecausesheloveswatchingfireworkswithherfamilyandfriends.Although,shealsoloveswhiteelephantgifttradingatherfamily’sChristmaspartyaswell.
MadiadmiresReedAlbrechtbecausehecanmakeanyonesmileregardlessofthesituation.Whenshebecomesfamous,MadifeelsthatSelenaGomezshouldplayherinamovieofherlife.Finally,whenaskedifthereisanythingelseshewouldlikeustoknowabouther,Madireplied,“IaimtolivemylifeforGod.”

UNIFORMSThetopteamlistedinthebracketisthehometeamandshallwearwhitejerseys.Theotherteamshallbethevisitingteamandweardarkjerseys.
PRACTICE SESSIONSNoClassBteamispermittedtopracticeontheregionaltournamentflooraftertheseedingofdistrictteamsandnoClassAteamwillbeallowedtopracticeattheirClassAregionalsiteaftertheseedingofthetournament.NoClassAorBteamswillbeallowedtopracticeontheirrespectivestatetournamentfloorfollowingtheconclusionoftheregionaltournament,withtheexceptionofpre-tournamentshoot-arounds.ClassAshoot-aroundswillhappenduringhalftimeofthepreviousgame.
PROTESTSProtestsastoeligibilitystatusofindividualcontestantswillbeconsideredbytheBoardofDirectorspriortoorafterthecompletionofatournament,butnotwhilesaidtournamentisinprogress.
PASSES• Schools–Amaximumoftwenty-sevenpassesshallbegiventocompetingschoolsinregionalandstatetournaments,pluscheer-
leaderpasses(maximumof8whichincludesthemascot).Schoolsaretonotifythetournamentmanagerastothenumberofpassesneeded.Eachplayer,studentmanager,coachandschoolofficialmustpresentapassorticketforadmissiontoanyandallsessions.Additionalpassesmustberequestedfromthetournamentmanager.Thecostoftheseadditionalpasseswillbedeductedfromtheteampaymentattherateofanadulttournamentpass.

rizedfacultyrepresentativewhoshallberesponsibletohis/herschoolfortheconductofitsparticipantsandstudentsthroughoutthecontestandthevisitingteam’sstayawayfromhome.
• TheNDHSAABoardofDirectors,inresponsetoarecommendationoftheDistrictChairpersons,adoptedthefollowingpolicy:“AnappropriateshirtisrequiredatallNDHSAAsponsoreddistrict,regionandstateevents”.Anappropriateshirtistobedeterminedasperlocalschoolpolicy.Also,thereshallbenobodypaint.Facepaintisallowed.
• TheNDHSAATournamentPolicyasksnoobjectsshallbethrownintothestandsbyteams,cheerleaders,specialinterestgroups,etc.
TOURNAMENT BANDSManagersshouldprovidepassestobandmembers/directorsonlyforgames/sessionsatwhichtheyperform.Managersshouldconsultthebanddirectoronthesizeofthebandandprovideanadequateperformanceareaorlimitthenumbertofitthearea.Considerationmustbegiventoadequatesoundprojection.
Regional Tournament BandsThehostschoolbandoraschoolbandinthetournamentsiteareashallbedesignatedastheofficialtournamentband.Regionalmanagersareallowedtopayastipendtotournamentbandsof$100persession(nolessthan2games).Managersshouldprovidepassesforbandmembersforthesessionsatwhichtheyperform.

SPORTSMANSHIP• Thefollowingstatementshallappearinregionalandstatetournamentprograms:• Goodsportsmanshipisconductwhichimposesatypeofself-controlinvolvinghonestrivalry,courteousrelationsandgracefulaccep-
tanceofresults.Schoolspiritisareflectionofthoseattitudesandbehavior.Spectatoretiquetterequiresthatwerefrainfromdisplayinganyactiontotauntopponent’sfansectionsuchascarryingflagsaroundthecourtandstoppingtotaunttheopponent’sfansection.Thismayleadtocompetitionamongobserverswhichismistakenlyundertheguiseofgoodsportsmanship.Spectatorsareaskedtoremainintheirdesignatedfansection.Approachingtheopponent’sfansectionforthepurposeoftauntingandbaitingwillnotbetolerated.Also,carryingofflagsaroundthecourtwillNOTbeallowed!TheuseofprofanityatANYTIMEwillNOTbetolerated.
• Goodsportsmanshipshallbedefinedasthosequalitiesofbehaviorwhicharecharacterizedbyrespectandgenuineconcernforothers.Awarenessisexpectedconcerningtheimpactofanindividual’sinfluenceonthebehaviorofothers.Goodsportsmanshipisviewedasaconcretemeasureoftheunderstandingandcommitmenttofairplay,ethicalbehaviorandintegrity.
• Fansshallberequiredtobeinbleachersandnotonthefloorunderbasketsatregionandstatetournaments.
NOISEMAKERS & CONFETTITheBoardofDirectorshasbannedtheuseofartificialnoisemakersatallAssociationsponsoredtournaments,includinghorns,bells,clapboardsanddrumsusedforsuchpurposes.Confettihasalsobeenbannedbecauseofthepotentialfirehazardandexcessiveclean-upworkinvolvedbetweensessions.Tournamentmanagersareinstructedtoconfiscatesucharticlesatthedoor.
GUIDELINES FOR HALF-TIME ENTERTAINMENT AT STATE TOURNAMENTSThelocalhalf-timeentertainmentcommitteemayselectpompongroups,danceteams,marchingbandsorothergroupsorindividualsonthebasisofvarietyandaudienceappeal.Theperformancetimeforeachhalf-timeislimitedtoONEgroup-nottoexceedsevenminutes.TournamentmanagerswillattempttosecureClassAperformersforClassAtournamentsandClassBperformersforClassBtournaments.
CHEERLEADERS• Onlybona-fidehighschoolstudentsarepermittedascheerleadersandallowedonthefloor.Eachschoolisresponsiblefortheconduct
oftheircheerleaders.Cheerleadersshouldnotbeontheplayingfloorwhilethegameisinprogress,asthisnotonlymightinterferewiththeplayofthegame,butcouldresultinaccidentalinjurytocheerleadersorplayersalike.Anareaofftheplayingcourtshouldbeprovidedforcheerleaders,andtheyshouldberestrictedfromgoingontothecourtexceptduringtheintermissionand60secondtime-outperiods.ThereisalimitofEIGHTcheerleadersorSEVENcheerleadersandONEmascotatallregionalandstatetournaments.
• Whenpomponsareusedbycheerleadersorhalf-timeentertainment,loosestringsonthefloorshouldbeimmediatelyremovedbythegroupperforming,asthesecanbethecauseofseriousinjurytoplayers.
SOLICITATIONSNosolicitationsforanypurposeshallbepermittedatanyAssociationsponsoredtournamentregardlessofthemeritofsuchaventure.
CONCESSIONS• Concessionrightsareawardedtothehostschoolorbuildingmanagement.Concessionmerchandiseshallbelimitedtotypesnormally
availableatbasketballgamesduringtheregularseason,suchassoftdrinks,popcorn,candy,coffee,etc.TheNDHSAAandmanage-mentcontrolswhatcanbesoldinthetournamentbuildingandtheareaadjacenttoitsuchasparkinglots.Enterpriseswhichmighttendtoexploitstudentsareprohibited.
• Concessionprivilegesmaybeawardedtoschoolorganizations,serviceclubs,orsimilarorganizationsbythemanagement,butnottoprivateindividualsorcompanies.
PROGRAMS (Regional and State)• Programrightsforregionalandstatetournamentsareawardedtohostschools,whomayinturnassignsuchrightstoaserviceclub
orsimilarorganizationinthecommunity.However,inthecaseofsuchassignment,thehostschoolshallberesponsibleforapprovingthecontentsoftheprogrambooklets.
• TournamentbookletsshallincludeinformationsuppliedbytheNDHSAAofficewhichincludesFarmersUnionInsurance,theNa-tionalGuardandtheNDDOT.
• Useofadvertisinginprogramsisoptionalwiththehostschool.However,suchadvertisingshallbeingoodtaste,withnoadvertise-mentspertainingtogambling,alcohol,drugsortobacco.Advertisingshallnottakeprecedenceovertournament,NDHSAAorschoolinformation.

TROPHIES AND AWARDSStateClassBteamawardsareprovidedfor1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6thand7thplacewinners.Additionally,aStateTournamentParticipantawardwillbegiventotheClassB8thplaceteam.StateClassAteamawardsaregivenforplaces1stthrough6th.Eighteenindividualparticipationawardsareprovidedforcoachesandplayersfromeachoftheparticipatingteams.SchoolsmaypurchaseadditionalawardsbycontactingtheNDHSAAoffice.Amaximumof8participationawardswillbegiventothecheerleaders/mascotplus1forthecheercoach.AlsoattheClassBtournaments,aspirittrophywillbeawardedtotheschooldisplayingthebestsportsmanship/spiritandcheeringsectionateachtournament.OnlytrophiesprovidedorapprovedbytheNDHSAAandpresentedbyanNDHSAArepresentativewillbegiven.
BALLSBallsareprovidedfree-of-chargeforallregionandstatebasketballtournamentsbySpalding.Uponcompletionofthetournament,oneballshouldbepresentedtoeachoneofthetopfourteams.
BASKETBALL NETS• Thefollowingpolicyshallbeappliedtoregionalandstatetournaments: “Becauseofthedangerofbreakingglassbackboards,netsarenottobecutorremovedattheconclusionofthetournamentby
thewinningteam.Ifthenetsaredesiredasatrophy,thetournamentmanagershouldbepaidthepriceofanewsetofnets.Ifnetsaresecuredbythewinningschoolinthismanner,theyshallberemovedbythemanagementfollowingthetournamentandnotduringthetimetheactwillbewitnessedbystudentsandadultspectators.”
• Tournamentmanagersarerequestedtoadvisecoachesoftheregulationpriortothestartofthetournament.
INSURANCEEachtournamentwillbeprotectedbyaMasterPropertyDamageLiabilitypolicy.Alltournamentswillbeprotectedagainstrobberyinsideandoutsidethepremises.
TELEVISIONExclusivetelevisionrightshavebeensoldtoForumCommunicationsfortheStateClassA&BTournaments.
VIDEOTAPING AND FILMING• Regulationsprohibittheuseofvideoequipmentbyschoolsexceptforthegame(s)theyareplaying.Thisdoesnotprohibitstations
thathavecontractedforthetelevisingoftournamentsfromvideotapingorfilmingfordelayedbroadcasts.• PrivateindividualsmayusevideorecordersatNDHSAAsponsoredeventsprovidedtheydonotinterferewithanotherperson’sview
ofthegame.Tournamentmanagerswilldetermineifindividualsarecausinganyviewingproblems.
OFFICIALS• AssignmentsofofficialsforstatetournamentgamesaremadebytheNDHSAAofficeoneweekpriortothetournamentandofficials
willbenotifiedoftheirspecificassignments.Managementisrequestedtoprovidetwopassestoeachworkinggameofficial.• Deskofficials,tickettakersandsellers,ushers,etc.,aretobeobtainedbythetournamentmanager.Thedeskofficialactingasscore-
keeperisrequiredtowearadistinguishinguniformsohe/shecanbereadilyidentified.
