SITE: CHOPPY SANDS (R072XY110KS) SITE DESCRIPTION: This site occurs on steep to very steep (24-60% slopes), sometimes unstable sand dunes. The sites are fragile and may have blowouts scattered throughout. Hillslopes are broken with a series of slope slips referred to as catsteps giving it the appearance of large stair steps. Soils are very deep with sandy surface layers and subsoils. Organic matter is very low to low. Soil structure is often loose and single-grained below the surface. Soils are excessively drained, and the available water capacity is low. Slopes range from 24-60%. Drought cycles have a major impact on the vegetation of this site. The species composition changes with the duration and severity of the drought.

AUM/AC 50% Use (25% HE)

60% Use (30% HE)

1.1 Reference Community Western Wheatgrass, Buffalograss, Blue Grama, Vine Mesquite

The potential vegetation on this site is highly variable due to the fluctuation of degree and length of time of ponding. Potential vegetation is 85% grasses and grass-likes and 15% forbs. Western wheatgrass, blue grama, buffalograss, sedges and vine mesquite dominate the site. The forb component is very diverse; the most noticeable forbs are smartweeds, woolly burr ragweed, and lanceleaf fogfruit. NOTE: Vine Mesquite does not occur in NE.

2000 0.55 0.66

1.2 Inundation or Saturation Community Spikerush, Barnyard Grass, Little Barley

This plant community dominates during and immediately after prolonged inundation. Perennial grasses decrease in abundance and water-tolerant forbs and sedges increase. Spikerush, barnyard grass, little barley, rushes and sedges are dominant grasses and grass-likes. The production is highly variable and will need to be determined on a site-by-site basis.

___ ___ ___

1.3 Annuals, Bare Ground Community

This plant community results after ponding has drown out grasses leaving bare soil. As time progresses, annuals and early successional perennials are present.

150 0.04 0.05

2.1 Tilled Community Inundation / Saturation

This occurs when land has been planted to an annual crop and ponding is long enough to drown out the crop. This site is generally not grazed so no forage production values are listed.

N/A N/A N/A

2.2 Seeded Community Reseeded or Go-back

There are a number of transitions depending upon the length of farming, the time since abandonment (if go-back) and if seeding, the species seeded. See forage suitability group descriptions for production estimates if seeded.

BRIEF ECOLOGICAL SITE DESCRIPTIONS MAJOR LAND RESOURCE AREA (MLRA) 72: CENTRAL HIGH TABLELAND

GRAVELLY HILLS (R072XY113KS)

This site occurs on nearly level to steep (0-60%) slopes on terraces or tertiary terrace remnants that cap ridges, crests and upper slopes of undulating or rolling uplands. The surface texture is gravelly loam, gravelly sandy loam or coarse sand with a sandy subsurface texture group. The soils contain significant amounts of gravel throughout the root zone and formed in loamy, sandy and gravelly soil material over gravelly material on stream terraces. Exposed areas of gravel are inherent to the site. The reference plant community consists of 75-85% grasses and grass-likes, 5-15% forbs and 5-10% shrubs (by weight of total annual production), with a representative production value of 1200 pounds/acre. Little bluestem and sideoats grama are the dominant plants in the reference plant community. Big bluestem, prairie sandreed, blue and hairy grama, switchgrass, needleandthread and western wheatgrass are secondary grasses. The forb community is diverse and includes prairie clovers, dotted gayfeather, and upright coneflower. Currant and skunkbush sumac are common shrubs. Heavy continuous grazing, inadequate rest and recovery and unbalanced forage and animal numbers results in a community dominated by blue grama with an increase of hairy grama, sand dropseed, Hood’s phlox, hairy goldenaster and small soapweed. With further heavy grazing, the plant community becomes a blue grama and threadleaf sedge sod.

DEFINITIONS

Alluvium A deposit of clay, silt, sand and gravel left by flowing streams in a river valley or delta, typically producing a fertile soil.

Ecological Site

An ecological site is a distinctive kind of land with specific physical characteristics. It differs from other kinds of land in its ability to produce a distinctive kind and amount of vegetation. An ecological site is recognized and described based on the characteristics differentiating it from other sites its ability to produce and support a characteristic plant community. An ecological site is the product of all the environmental factors responsible for its development including soils, hydrology (infiltration, runoff, water table), herbivory, fire regime and climate.

Eolian Sediments that were formed from erosion, transport and deposition by wind. Major Land

Resource Area A geographic area that is characterized by a common soils and parent materials, climate, water resources, and land use patterns. There are thirteen MLRA’s in Nebraska.

Reference Plant Community

The reference plant community is the plant community that existed at the time of European immigration and settlement of North America. This plant community is best adapted to the combination of environmental factors associated with the site. The community was in a dynamic equilibrium with the environment and could withstand natural disturbances such as drought, fire, grazing, and animal and insect impacts. The community varied from year to year terms of plant community structure and function due to the natural disturbances.

Representative Production Value

The mean estimated annual total production for the site calculated from the range across the Major Land Resource Area under “average” conditions. The production values include all plants including those that will not usually be grazed by livestock. In this document, the production figures are based upon the reference plant community. Other plant communities will have reduced forage production.

Residuum A soil or subsoil that has formed as a result of long weathering over carbonate rocks (limestone and dolomite) bedrock.
