It’s always the way isn’t it, you wait five years for a proper summer then two come along at the same time. Having successfully wrung out our onesies long enough to devour every ice lolly in the city, the heatwave saw scores of you descend upon our very own Quayside Seaside to soak up some rays and trick your brain into thinking you’d nipped off to the Algarve for the weekend. The ultimate in holidaying on a budget in our eyes, and even if the weather’s returning as close as it ever does to normal, our little tropical riverside haven is still there for you to plant a parasol in.Once you’ve had your fill of the sand (or someone’s trodden through your castle) there are still plenty of other pursuits to keep you entertained this summer. We’ve got bars reopening, cruises up the Tyne, and free outdoor cinema making a long awaited return to the very heart of the city in Monument Movies. Ariba!

going into the mix with their own. “We always keep an eye on social media for things like this, as after all, it’s about giving people the films they want to see. We definitely aim to have a really nice mix of films as well. We want the schedule to be comprehensive so that there's a film for everyone within the programme. The family-friendly and younger-orientated films are on during the daytime while more of the recent blockbusters and cinematic classics take the

evening slots at 5pm.”Running throughout the school holidays, Grey's Monument transforms from the city's most popular meeting place to a buzzing hub of free cinema. You can keep the kids entertained

with an animated classic while you slump in a post-shopping heap of exhaustion, or

you can take that adorable boy or girl

you've had your eye on for a while and try the old yawning-

arm-round-the-

shoulder trick during a scary scene. With NE1’s deckchairs on hand to make your viewing as comfortable as possible, and plenty of food and drink outlets nearby to offer you sustenance, there couldn’t be a more perfect way to spend a sunny summer’s afternoon. But if you’re starting to worry that the latest screenings are the culmination of a trilogy, Stephen’s quick to point out how keen they are for a fourth. “We'd absolutely love to do another one. We've seen what a massive difference it makes to the city centre and how vibrant the area around Monument becomes. Monument Movies is very much a firm fixture of NE1’s programme of events in the city centre.”

www.getintonewcastle.co.uk

There's nothing quite like going to the pictures is there? The stories, the excitement, the shocks, the gasps, the heroes, the villains, the plot twists, the special effects, the thrilling climaxes, the death-defying stunts, that feeling of being perched right on the edge of your deckchair. Hang on, what?In its latest instalment, NE1's famous Monument Movies has returned to the very heart of the city with its biggest and best schedule of cinematic brilliance to date. Plus, as an added bonus, films are now also screening on Sundays as well as every Tuesday and Thursday, giving movie goers another reason to pop into town for that extra bit of shopping.

“This will be the third time that NE1 has delivered Monument Movies,” said Stephen Patterson, NE1's Director of Communications, “and that's based on the fantastic success we've had in the previous years. It helps bring thousands of people into the city over the summer period.Ultimately, it’s just a brilliant experience for people watching films in the great outdoors, especially at such an iconic setting like Grey’s Monument.”Brought to attentive audiences completely free, the programme is delightfully varied, with the kids well catered for thanks to screenings of movies like Matilda (Thurs 8th, noon) and Mrs Doubtfire (Sun 11th, 11am), The Muppets (Tues 13th, noon),

Up (Thurs 15th, noon) and Spirited Away (Thurs 22nd, noon); while the adults are also kept happy with screenings of Rear Window (Thurs 8th, 5pm), Flash Gordon (Tues 13th, 5pm), The Thomas Crown Affair (Thurs 15th, 5pm) and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (Tues 20th, 5pm).

It's a diversity that's entirely deliberate as

well, with a lot of effort going in to make sure the

choice of screenings appeals to the whole family. When quizzed on who comes up with the programme though, Stephen admits to getting a little help from the public with Twitter and Facebook suggestions

Following its extensive renovation from its previous guise of Shearer's, Nine becomes NE1's newest sports and lounge bar which, alongside daily screening of live sport, plans to cater for the masochists amongst you by showing every single Newcastle United home game in the forthcoming season. It'll hopefully not all be doom and gloom, but regardless they'll be offering an impressive food and drinks menu to brighten you up after even the most shocking performance.Every day the bar will be catering to your purse strings by offering some great money-saving deals, with buckets of five bottled beers for only £10 on a Monday, a free drink with your full English on a Sunday, and everything from 'two mains for a tenner' to the classic 'beer and a burger' in between. If you fancy something a little bit different, why not try out an evening of comedy and burlesque at Newcastle Arts Centre’s Black Swan on Friday 16th August, which is designed to tantalise and tickle your funny bone, and to raise funds for The Sophie Lancaster foundation. The night will showcase the unique and comedic talents of the region’s finest burlesque acts with a selection of six performers including the classy Daisy Stays, the wacky Carman Havalook and the luscious Em Brulee, who will be performing her debut show in Newcastle and compering the evening. Em said, “I am an incredibly passionate performer and love nothing more than to entertain, surrendering to the joy of the music and creating an ambience of high vintage glamour and high jinks at every opportunity.” There will also be a number of stalls selling quirky jewellery and clothing and a raffle with prizes from the likes of Dare To Wear Clothing and a star prize from Through The Looking Glass Corsets. Packed full of hilarious and cheeky burlesque performances, all proceeds from the night will go to The Sophie Lancaster foundation, which campaigns for the UK Hate Crime legislation to be extended to include people from alternative subcultures and lifestyles. www.sophielancasterfoundation.com

NEW SEASON ANXIETY

PAUL DIXONNEWCASTLE FOOTBALL PUNDIT

Visitors to the city during this highly unusual spell of Level 2 heat warning (summer, as we used to call it), will have been impressed (or appalled) by the colourful sartorial efforts of the locals. Garish, yes, but all wishing to express their joy at something in the sky. Visitors will now notice that the populace are turning monochrome. Black and white replacing Venetian green and veldt sunrise orange, this may come as a relief to aesthetes, but it heralds the run in for the football season.Whilst we realists have learned to lower our expectations, it doesn’t diminish our looking forward to reigniting old match day friendships. The expectations this season are lower than usual, because when the club’s stated aim is for top 10 and is mixed with the mid-table giants of Fulham and West Brom, it doesn’t exactly embolden supporters to ‘believe’. The squad will be smaller, even with one less competition, and the addition of a Director of Football more suited to selling snake oil from the back of a covered wagon isn’t really adding to the hopes of fulfilment for the club. The unwelcome addition of Papiss Cisse apparently refusing to endorse a money lender was a distraction we could have done without. He was happy to endorse one last season though, and spend the riches they pitch-forked into his bank. This is typical Newcastle – when things are going well elsewhere, the expectation is to push on – with us it’s to look for banana skins. I’ll be there though, the season ticket has been purchased, the pubs selected and the match-day cigar nestles in the humidor. The great thing about football, is anything can happen. I suggest you enjoy it as much as you can, and if you can’t bring yourself to dream of success, at least you can dream of that lilac and vermillion pair of beach shorts, that should we, like Newcastle United, break with tradition and get another summer.

HILARIOUS AND CHEEKY BURLESQUE PERFORMANCES

Aside from a wealth of shopping and eating opportunities, Old Eldon Square also offers a welcoming piece of green space within the heart of the bustling city centre. Known as a gathering place for alternative teens and coffee drinkers, it’s the perfect place to unwind and watch the world go by. The public square on Blackett Street is a hive of activity over the summer months with many enjoying the sunshine while on their lunch break. Others make a beeline for the Square for a spot of retail therapy thanks to Fenwick’s, Waitrose, Argos, Boots and many more shops on the upper level of the centre. As well as this the Georgian terrace to the left of the Square houses a selection of independent businesses including tattooists, alternative clothing shops and cafes, perfect if you are looking for something different. However if you are feeling peckish, fear not, for you are spoilt for choice as the Square boasts a selection of popular

restaurants such as Strada, Japanese noodle bar Wagamama and Portuguese taste sensation Nando’s. There is something for everyone, families, friends and visitors to Newcastle.

If your childhood wasn’t spent pretending every boat trip was actually some sort of pirating adventure, or journey into the mystery of the open seas, then we’re sorry to say you’ve missed out. Adult life tends to rob us of such flights of fancy, but thanks to Newcastle Quayside’s River Escapes cruises, your mind can wander (or plunder) freely again with their range of different jaunts up the River Tyne. Accompanied by an ever-knowledgeable guide, each of the luxurious cruises comes complete with a bar and refreshments – perfect for sightseeing, hosting a party, putting on a corporate event, or dressing up like Black Beard and shouting “yarrrrr” at anyone out for a riverside stroll. Their hour long Quay-to-City trip, which casts off at midday, 1.30pm and 3pm on Saturdays, offers a snapshot tour of the city’s landmarks and includes a spectacular view of all seven of the Tyne’s bridges. On the Quay-to-Countryside cruise, sailing at 12.15pm every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, journey under the winking eye of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge to Ryton Willows Nature Reserve. Or there’s even the Quay-to-Sea trip, sailing every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 11am, which is a three hour journey from the legendary shipyards of the olden Tyne to the cultural mecca and Fish ‘n’ Chip nirvana of South Shields. www.riverescapes.co.uk

I had a very humbling experience recently. I was booked to do a show at an art centre in Burnham and Dunkeld, a small town in Perthshire. As I drove up to the venue I noticed a big chalkboard outside. Written on it in massive letters it read, “Tonight, Annie Prestwick’s award-winning leek and potato soup” and underneath that, in smaller writing, “plus Jo Caulfield”. Apparently I’m second billing to soup in Scotland! Although I thought it was kind of funny, I was also genuinely annoyed. So I went in, and there was a nice elderly Scottish gentleman running the place. I said, “Excuse me but I‘m just curious as to what you did with the chalkboard outside, because you didn’t so much advertise the show that was on as the soup that was on.” And in that really dry Scottish way he just said to me, “Oh but Jo, it’s a very popular soup.” I still couldn’t let it go. “But it’s the fact that you’ve put award-winning soup. I’m an award-winning comedian. You could have put that. I mean, how many awards has a soup won?” He looked me straight in the eye and said “Nineteen.” That shut me up. Bloody Annie Prestwick! Jo Caulfield appears at The Stand comedy club in Newcastle from Thursday 15th until Saturday 17th August.

LISTINGS

We’ve been doing some thinking lately, and we’ve worked out that if summer had a Christmas in the middle, it would more or less be the perfect time of year. Just think, you’ve taken a few days off work to top up the old tan, there’s a tropical drink in your hand, and then all of a sudden someone starts giving you presents. Sounds great, right? Well, at the risk of tooting our own magaziney bassoon, that was the thinking behind the Quayside Seaside, Monument Movies and host of other special little offers and gifts dotted about the city for you. The good folk who visit NE1 deserve a treat, and we’re more than happy to play the sweltering Santa to make it happen.Anyway, we ho-ho-hope you’ll join us next time for all the news, views and previews of the great and the good in Newcastle. See you then!
