To the University of Northern Iowa student readers (and everyone),

This magazine was developed as a way to provide weekly entertainment by UNI students, for UNI students. My name is Neal Freshour and I am the editor and creator of “UNI By Day and Night”. I created this magazine as a way to connect with fellow students, and provide useful and entertaining information to my fel-low Panthers, in a way that only we could understand.

This magazine is issue 6 and we are currently working on issue 7 for next week, which should feature current events around the Cedar Falls area, tips and tricks for preparing for finals, a checklist for the summer (Freshman through Seniors), and some other aspects.

This issue features a story on the two most popular bar and grills on Main Street, Toads and The Pump Haus. We go in depth with these two establishments and what makes them a cornerstone for any UNI student. Then, we tell the illustrious story of UNI Homecoming week, leading up to graduation. Finally, we close by in-cluding a timeline in which we outline the typical weekend for a UNI student, and we think that you will be laughing in agreement all the way through.

We are always looking for ways that we might improve our magazine, from simple details, to the biggest components of design and content. If you have any helpful suggestions please send them to me at [email protected].

See you all on campus,

Neal Freshour

Cedar Falls, Iowa has been catering to University of Northern Iowa students since the school opened its doors in 1876. As most people know, college is a time where young adults get to explore life on their own, away from home, and have as much fun as possible while gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to begin a career following graduation. In all of the years students have been attending UNI, student have been looking for and discovering their favorite local dining spots and the best places to spend their nights on the weekends. It is important for their to be conveniently locat-ed venues in which students can socialize and enjoy their time when not slaving away on their studies. Additionally, the area surrounding the UNI campus in Cedar Falls has been up to the task of providing these venues for the local students including both the popular Main Street, which is only a few miles from campus, and “The Hill” or Campus Street, which is right next to campus within walking distance. There are several popular “hot spots” for local dining and nightlife in both of these two areas. The Hill includes bar and grills such as, “The Other Place”, “Suds”, “Sharkys”, “SoHo”, “Becks”, “The Library”, “Gin-gers” and more. While Main Street offers bars such as “The Pump Haus”, “Toads”, “Bourbon Street and Voodoo Lounge”, “Berks”, “Tony’s La Pizzeria”, “Pablos Mexican Grill”, “The Hub”, “Single Speed Brewing Company”, “Jokers”, and much more. Among all that Main Street has to offer to University of Northern Iowa students when it comes to local dining and nightlife, two restaurants stand out as consistent front runners among UNI students. These two bar and grills are The Pump Haus and Toads. Both of these bars have been around for many years and have provided a quality experience for dining and weekend nightlife. Although both of these venues tend to position themselves to cater mainly to the local University and its students, they both have also done a fantastic job of providing a family friendly environ-ment for residents of the surrounding area to come and have a nice meal during the day for lunch and dinner hours throughout the week. In particular, Toads Bar and Grill has been in locat-ed on downtown Main Street in Cedar Falls, Iowa since it was founded in 1991. Toads likes to boast that since it was founded in 1991, they have established themselves as “Ce-dar Valley’s number one hometown spot for fun, food, and great service”. Toads is located at 204 Main Street, which is right in the middle of the action and fantastic atmosphere of downtown. Toads has plenty to entertain both families and college students alike including, pool, shuffle board, darts, fooseball, a Megatouch and internet jukebox with over 185,000 CDs, and 22 TVs constantly running with whatev-er sports, events, or television shows are currently of the most interest to people. Toads also has an array of alcoholic beverage choices behind their two bar areas including over 50 types of beer, 100 types of liquor, and several types of soft drinks and juices for those not 21 years of age or older. They provide these beverages in pitchers, pints, and bottles that work well with their daily, weekly, and monthly drink specials.

Along with Toads great food, variety of drink choices, and fun atmosphere they also keep busy interacting with locals by holding monthly events and several leagues to help students and local residents fill their spare time. Monthly events include things such as golf tournaments, the Annual Chili Cook On, and considering the owners are big Chicago Cubs fans they also offer a bus trip to see the Cubs play from time to time. The leagues that are held at Toads on a monthly basis include activities such as softball, vol-leyball, golf, pool, darts, and shuffleboard which also help college students have somewhere to go to kick back , relax, meet new friends, and have a great time.Although Toads seems like it’s all fun and games, they also like to roll back their sleeves and get involved with the community. Toads is involved with their dis-tributer, Martin Brothers, to help provide assistance to YMCA in several community projects and outreach-es. “We always enjoy helping the Cedar Valley in any way that we can because they have supported us for so long and have provided us with the memories that have helped shape the better part of our lives as own-ers of Toads, and residents Cedar Falls” said owner

and manager of Toads Mark Hanna. Clearly Toads has been a big part of the Cedar Falls community and University of Northern Iowa tradition and atmo-sphere since 1991 and continue to provide students and residents of all kinds enjoy their time living in the area, whether it’s just to go to school for four years, or if it’s for the long haul.Additionally, The Pump Haus is another bar located on Main Street in Cedar Falls, Iowa that has been in existence since 2002 and also works very hard to provide local residents and students of the University of Northern Iowa with an affordable place to go and have an enjoyable time away from their regular work and studies. Specifically, The Pump Haus Pub and Grill is located just down the road from Toads at 311 Main Street, which is also fantastically located right in the middle of the collection of hot spots that the downtown area has to offer. The Pump Haus provides both a family friendly environment to go and have lunch or dinner, and a vibrant nightlife for the young-er crowd that is primarily made up of UNI students.

In addition, one of the main goals of The Pump Haus is to maintain an environment that supports the University of Northern Iowa and its students, and it certainly shows in their daily operations. They are constantly offering great values for their food and drinks, holding events for students, supporting UNI sports, and even hiring students who choose to work while they attend school. “It is very important to me that I not only look to hire UNI students, but that we continue to work with the students and their schedules so that they can make the money they need to support themselves through their studies while also maintaining a lifestyle that lends itself to fun and memory building as much as possible” the manager of The Pump Haus said in regards to the businesses support of UNI students. This bar and restaurant also supports University of Northern Iowa sports by holding viewing events in which food and drinks are at very low prices, and the games are shown on every one of their many televisions spread through-out the bar. For example, for the upcoming UNI Homecoming weekend football game they will be offering one dollar hot dogs and beer during the entire game from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at night. This is customary during all Iowa, Iowa State, and UNI football games.Along with all of the events and deals during the week, The Pump Haus, just like Toads, has one of the most popular nightlife spots for University students on the weekends. The Pump Haus, just like Toads, primarily attracts the older crowd of junior and senior students from UNI, as well as graduates and local residents of the area of 22 years old and above. The Pump Haus continues to maintain a popu-lar hot-spot reputation from the students who frequent the Main Street bars on the weekends and continues to offer great deals and fun times.

“It is very important to me that I not only look to hire UNI students, but that we continue to work with students and their schedules so that they can make the money they need to support themselves through their studies while also maintaining a life-style that lends itself to fun and mem-ory building as much as possible. ”

The Pump Haus Bar and Grill is often occupied during the day by locals of the Cedar Falls area that surrounds the campus of UNI. It is a great place to enjoy lunch with family and friends.

ContinuedAlong with their effort to provide affordable enter-tainment and social atmospheres for students, they also make an effort to be involved in the commu-nity and create events for people to participate in. These include things such as the Pink Ribbon Run to raise money to support breast cancer research, Sips in the City, and a Halloween costume contest, to name a few. The Pump Haus is also involved in QUASH which supports the Alzheimer’s Associa-tion, and collaborates with the Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley on various projects as they arise and they have the unique opportunity to lend a hand.It is clear that there is a an abundance of choices for residents of Cedar Falls, and more specifically, students of the University of Northern Iowa, when it comes to local dining and nightlife options.

Despite all of the different establishments, all with separate things to offer their customer, that are vy-ing for UNI student’s attention both Toads and The Pump Haus have been able to stand out among the crowd as two of the best places to go when looking for good food and entertainment. As any mem-bers of a community like to see, both of these long standing bars are also very involved in the com-munity and do everything they can to support the local families, residents, and university students. Overall the local dining and nightlife atmosphere of both “The Hill”, and Main Street are top notch, and we give Toads an 8.5/10 and The Pump Haus a solid 8/10.

The bar at The Pump Haus is always packed with UNI students and Cedar Falls patrons that are there to enjoy a game or night out with friends!

Toads bar and grill features a tiki style bar which is located on the “fun and games” side of the bar.

HOMECOMINGU N ITRADITION

There are many traditions at UNI, but per-haps none as popular as campaniling. The UNI campanile comes alive Friday night of Homecoming week each year. At the stroke of midnight, students flock around the tower to steal a kiss from a long-time lover or new acquaintance. This tradition began shortly after the tower was constructed in the 1920s. At that time, there were many more women on campus than men. It is said that a male student would call a random fe-

male student to meet him at the campanile. The male student would hide in the bushes and if he did not like what he saw, he would leave the girl waiting and go back and call another one instead. It was also “common knowledge” at one time that if a female stu-dent was never kissed during campaniling, she was not a true female. The campaniling tradition faded out over the decades but has since been revived with the efforts of the Alumni Association.

HOMECOMINGU N ITRADITION

There is also a tradition of wearing purple on the Friday of Homecoming. The entire city of Cedar Falls is encouraged to show support for UNI, along with wearing “UNI: Purple For Life” buttons, or any others they have. It promotes a sense of unity and school pride in the community.A more recent trend, The Interlude, is a dance that is performed to the band “Attack Attack!”’s song of the same name. The Inter-lude is an all inclusive dance that was start-

ed by a small group in the student section at basketball games during the 2010-2011 season. Many attempts at recreating The Interlude have popped up all over YouTube, and the dance has been featured on ESPN as well as regional media outlets, and was mentioned by First Lady Michelle Obama in her May, 2011 commencement speech at UNI.
