A Delhi court on Thursdaysent former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram tocustody in Tihar jail in theINX Media case, even asanother court granted anticipatory bail to him and hisson Karti in the AircelMaxismoney laundering case.
Special judge Ajay KumarKuhar said: “Having considered all the facts and circumstances of the case, thenature of offences and thestage of investigation, whichis still in progress, the accused is remanded in judicial custody till September19.”
“I am only worried aboutthe economy,” Mr. Chidambaram commented, when areporter asked him if he hadanything to say after thecourt ordered his judicialcustody.
Earlier, the CBI producedhim before the court andurged it to send him to judicial custody, submitting thathe was an influential personin public life and wieldedsubstantial and pervasive influence over witnesses, having the potential to tamperwith evidence.
Opposing the prosecutionplea, Kapil Sibal, counsel forMr. Chidambaram, arguedthat the CBI had not broughtanything on record to evensuggest that his client had ev
er tried to influence the witnesses or interfere in theinvestigation.
‘Ready to surrender’Mr. Sibal further argued thathis client was ready to surrender to the EnforcementDirectorate in the moneylaundering case since his appeal challenging the DelhiHigh Court order denyinghim protection from arresthad been dismissed.
Mr. Chidambaram alsofiled an application in thecourt seeking permission tosurrender in the moneylaundering case connectedwith the INX bribery case. The court sought the ED’sreply by September 12.
Earlier, special judge O.P.
Saini granted anticipatorybail to the fatherson duo inthe AircelMaxis moneylaundering case. “Considering the distance of time between the commission of alleged crime and the filing ofthe instant application, unexplained delay in investigation, there being no possibility of the accused tamperingwith the evidence or threatening any witness or fleeingfrom justice and there beingno possibility of their committing a similar crimeagain, I am satisfied that it isa fit case for grant of benefitof anticipatory bail,” he said.

The Supreme Court onThursday allowed Iltija Muftito meet her detained mother, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, in Srinagar.
But when she asked thecourt’s permission to movearound in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Justice of IndiaRanjan (CJI) Gogoi orally remarked, “Why do you wantto move around? It is verycold in Srinagar.” However, the court later recorded thatshe could move the districtauthorities for permission tomove around.
The top judge did not payheed to the government’s insistent pleas that Ms. IltijaMufti had no business moving the “august forum” ofthe Supreme Court.
The Centre said sheshould have ideally gone tothe local District Magistratefor permission to meet hermother.
Ms. Mehbooba Mufti, PDPleader, has been under detention, along with severalothers, since August 5 in thebackdrop of the dilution ofprovisions of Article 370, theensuing curfew and bifurcation of the State into UnionTerritories. The Valley hasbeen in a state of lockdownfor the past month.
Attorney General K.K. Venugopal said Ms. MehboobaMufti’s mother and sisterhad met her after taking per
mission from the Magistrate.“Why should she [Ms. IltijaMufti] come here now?” heasked.
‘Ostensible purpose’ Solicitor General TusharMehta said there might besomething more to Ms. IltijaMufti’s appeal than the “ostensible purpose” to meether mother. But the CJIstopped him short, saying,“It is her privilege to movethis forum... Are you goingto prevent her from meetingher mother?”
Ms. Iltija Mufti said shewas not permitted to leaveher house in Srinagar fromAugust 5 to August 22 by theauthorities. “There was a
chilling effect on my movement,” senior lawyer NityaRamakrishna for Ms. IltijaMufti submitted.
Finally, the court gave Ms.Iltija Mufti, who is now inChennai, permission to return to Srinagar at a time ofher choice to meet hermother in private.
The court recorded thegovernment’s assurance thatit would “not prevent” herfrom doing this. It further ordered that CPI(M) leaderM.Y. Tarigami be flown toDelhi from Srinagar fortreatment at AIIMS.

The map, as well as anumber of artefacts, was
