Whether you purchased a system with one or two 256-megabyte (MB) memory modules, or you purchased an additional 256-MB memory module (Kit No. OP-410-72504) to go with your system, use these instructions if you need to remove or install a memory module. Your NEC Versa LX or LXi computer includes a minimum of 32 or 64 MB of random access memory (RAM) and it supports up to 512 MB of RAM. The total RAM depends on which two of the listed small outline dual inline memory modules (SO-DIMM) are used: 32-MB memory module 64-MB memory module 128-MB memory module 256-MB memory module

NEC VERSA LX AND LXI256-MB MEMORY

UPGRADE KIT

Congratulations on purchasing an NECVersa LX or LXi computer. Whetheryou purchased a system with one ortwo 256-megabyte (MB) memorymodules, or you purchased anadditional 256-MB memory module(Kit No. OP-410-72504) to go with yoursystem, use these instructions if youneed to remove or install a memorymodule.

Your NEC Versa LX or LXi computerincludes a minimum of 32 or 64 MB ofrandom access memory (RAM) and itsupports up to 512 MB of RAM. Thetotal RAM depends on which two ofthe listed small outline dual inlinememory modules (SO-DIMM) areused:

• 32-MB memory module

• 64-MB memory module

• 128-MB memory module

Note: Some NEC Versa LX systemswith one or two 256-MB memorymodules report memory incorrectly inLANDesk Client Manager. Checksystem memory through the BIOSSetup Utility or by accessing theSystem Properties window.

Note: To ensure that the hibernation orSave-to-File file is properly created andutilized when needed, be sure that youhave the appropriate BIOS levelsinstalled on your system. For the NECVersa LX, use BIOS 45 or higher. Forthe NEC Versa LX with AGP, use BIOS25 or higher. The BIOS upgrades areavailable by calling Customer Supportat 1-800-632-4525 or by downloadingfrom the NECC website, www.nec-computers.com.

MEMORY MODULE INSTALLATION

Installing a memory module involvesthe following procedures:

• Disconnecting the system frompower sources

• Removing the keyboard retainers

• Lifting and removing the keyboard

• Installing the SO-DIMM memorymodule

• Replacing the keyboard.

Beforehandling any internal components,discharge static electricity from yourselfand your clothing by touching a nearbymetal surface.

Use the following steps to install amemory module:

1. Make sure the system isdisconnected from both AC powerand battery power and disconnectany peripheral devices that may beattached.

2. Open the LCD panel.

3. Locate the two keyboard retainers,and then slide each one toward theoutside edge of the system andremove.

4. Gently lift up the edge of thekeyboard nearest the LCD and slidethe keyboard toward the LCDscreen to release the tabs thatsecure it.

Be carefulnot to remove the keyboard orkeyboard cable entirely from thesystem.

5. Carefully turn over the keyboardand place it down on theVersaGlide. Be careful not to twistor disconnect the keyboard cable.

6. If you are replacing a SO-DIMMand need to remove one that isalready installed, do so as follows:

• Press the locking tabs awayfrom the sides of theSO-DIMM and hold whilegently lifting on the edge of theSO-DIMM.

• When the edge of theSO-DIMM pops up and is atapproximately a 30 degreeangle, pull the SO-DIMM fromthe socket.

7. Locate the lock notches andalignment key on the new SO-DIMM.

8. Locate the SO-DIMM expansionport and proceed as follows:

• Hold the SO-DIMM at a 30degree angle and align the SO-DIMM contacts with the socketin the system.

• Ensure that the alignment key isproperly aligned with thealignment groove.

• Push the connector into thesocket.

• Press down on the edge of theSO-DIMM opposite the contactsuntil the lock tabs on the sidessnap into place, securing themodule.

9. Reassemble the system as follows:

• Lift up the keyboard and alignthe tabs on the front of it withthe slots in the system.

• Reseat the keyboard to itsoriginal position.

• Slide the keyboard retainersback onto the system.
