EDITOR’S NOTE:
The editor of NEDAC
NEWS, Mr. Mahmood
Manzoor, has relinquished
his duties for this publication.
A Senior NEDian and former
Vice President of NEDAC,
Mr. Manzoor has taken this
Quarterly to new levels of
excellence. As the newly
selected Editor of this
publication, I will do my best
to meet the standards
established by Manzoor
Sahab. Fortunately, I have the
support of some very
dedicated NEDAC members
and, with their help, we will
be able to produce a
Newsletter of high caliber
that will truly depict the real
image of NEDAC members.
NEDAC News belongs to
NEDAC Members. It should
form a connection; among
Members, between the
Membership and the Board,
and with the current
Engineering activities,
especially in Canada. Efforts
will be made to produce such
a source of knowledge, which
is helpful in the professional
life of our members.
Some new topics will be
introduced in this publication,
reflecting the changing
demands of the community
and to make it more
interesting. It cannot be done
by one person. We need the
input of the majority of our
membership in making this
newsletter a useful tool for
everyone in NEDAC
Community.
Please come forward and
support this noble mission.
This is a very effective way
to change our lives towards
prosperity and well being.
Aman Shabbir Siddiqui,
P.Eng B.E. Civil, M.Sc. Environment
A few words of appreciation for the former Editor: Mr. Mahmood Manzoor Sahab’s work will always be remembered in making this Newsletter a spearhead of NEDAC’s achievements. He has given new standards to this literary publication. To put together such a Newsletter is not an easy task, keeping in mind that we as a community do not produce much original written material. The formatting is also of high
quality. The credit also goes to him for maintaining consistency and for the timely publication of this Newsletter. I hope he will always be available for the help of the Editorial Team of NEDAC News. May Allah keep him in good health and high spirits. Ameen.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I am glad to say that the 5
th
NEDAC Annual Dinner and
Musical Evening was a great
success. It was judged as one
of the best events of NEDAC
by the members. This was
possible because of the team
work and tireless efforts of
the board members,
numerous volunteers and
participation of NEDAC
members and their families in
large number.
It has always been our
endeavour to arrange quality
technical and social events
for the benefit of NEDAC
members. We will continue
to do so in the coming year.
We are now in the process of
preparing the calendar of
NEDAC events for 2012.
Suggestions and ideas from
the members will be highly
appreciated.
I am happy to report that we
now have Mr. Aman Shabbir
Siddiqui as the new Editor of
the NEDAC Newsletter. He
is not a new person to the
members. He was one of the
members of the previous
Editorial Board of NEDAC
Newsletter and has also
contributed on Environmental
issues. Recently, he has
produced an excellent quality
souvenir for distribution in
the 5th NEDAC Annual
Function. I am quite
confident that he will not
only maintain the quality and
standard of the newsletter but
will also make efforts to
enhance its prestige.
I will be failing in my duty if
I do not speak about the hard
work of the earlier Editor of
the newsletter, Mr. Mahmood
Manzoor, who with his
outstanding calibre and
efforts has raised the standard
and quality of the newsletter
to the present level. I am
grateful to him and sincerely
thank him for his enormous
and valuable contribution. I
will look forward for his
continued support for the
newsletter in future.
Since the year 2012 is around
the corner, I would close with
best wishes and prayers for a
very happy, healthy and
prosperous new year to all
our members.

MEMBERS CORNER QADEER AHMAD KHAN
Civil – 1978, Membership # 331 I am writing this letter to make aware some
thoughts that have been crossing my mind lately.
I still reflect on the troubling times I had to face
when I initially came to Canada. Adjusting to
the life in Canada as an immigrant is not always
easy or forthcoming and as a NEDAC member I
believe it is our utmost responsibility to ensure
that the way is made easier for immigrants who
are also NEDians. Firstly, I propose that we
revolutionize some of our current procedures to
inform and introduce new comers to Canada to
adjust to the workplace environment in place in
Canada. Secondly, I believe that as members of
NEDAC it is our responsibility to ensure that
NEDAC is well represented in Canada and that
we as members have to promote the
organization.
I suggest that NEDAC should introduce
immigrants to employers in their respective
engineering fields. I also suggest that training
for workplace safety as well as safety orientation
programs should be created by NEDAC.
Moreover, NEDAC should train individuals in
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information
System (WHMIS) safety, confined space
training and other workplace relevant safety
orientations. Furthermore, in consultation with
the Canadian Council of Independent
Laboratories, NEDAC should provide training
for CCIL certification, CSA certification and fall
protection. I believe NEDAC is capable of
ensuring that new migrants are well-prepared to
integrate into Canada’s workforce by providing
training in the form of seminars and courses
outlining the use of computers to generate
reports, filling out day to day forms etc.
Promoting NEDAC as an organization of value
and importance to the Canadian workplace
should be a top priority of all members of
NEDAC. I believe that members of NEDAC
who are currently working at the municipal and
regional levels of government should introduce
NEDAC as an organization to their respective
bosses. NEDAC members who are working for
private companies should also introduce the
NEDAC board of directors to their bosses and
invite them to fundraising events. NEDAC
should hold corporate events to invite various
engineering companies to meet their members as
well.
These are just points that I have recently
reflected upon and wanted to share with the
members. If anyone requires further information
or wants to continue the discussions further
please feel free to contact me at 905-875-2056.
Take care and have a great set of holidays.
SHAMS UZ ZAMAN
Civil – 1981, Membership # 086
This has been a great achievement and a big
responsibility given to you. In my opinion in the
past four years NEDAC has achieved big
milestone, except some poor leadership and
black sheep who are trying to misconduct and to
get the leadership in their hands. This Politics is
very bad and should not be played in and around
in order to keep clean the atmosphere. Otherwise
the Establishment of NEDAC is a good step. I
myself have been attending NEDAC Dinner
since last four years. It was very unfortunate that
this years I could not attend this Dinner, because
of the issue of the fees, change of place among
the Management and other group and of course
some personal reasons. On the top of mind I
have learned a good lesson, that I do not know
the Politics.
OBITUARY

These are difficult times for Iram and her family.
May Allah give them strength to bear this pain.
Ameen.

NEDAC FAMILY PICNIC 2011
NEDAC continued its tradition of the two
previous years with the organization of a family
Picnic at Erindale Park in Mississauga on
Saturday, July 30, 2011. The picnic was a
successful house-full event attended by NEDAC
members and their families.
Erindale Park is a large greenbelt located at the
east of Erin Mills Parkway at Dundas Street and
contains a number of facilities. It consists of
222 acres of land and features numerous picnic
facilities, playground equipment area, a lookout
on the old dam and a toboggan hill. This park
also offers walking trails, fishing, canoeing and
spectacular views of the Credit River and tall
ravines. The park is inviting to bird watchers,
photographers and anyone at all who enjoys
getting back to nature. This area of the Credit
River supports runs of Rainbow and Brown
Trout, Chinook, Coho and Atlantic Salmon.
The day was one of the hottest days of the
season with lots of sunshine provided by
nature. The participants started gathering at
around 11 am. Numerous activities were
planned for all ages especially for kids. Young
participants enjoyed by playing volley ball and a
cricket match. A six-over cricket match started
between president-eleven and picnic-eleven.
However, it could not be concluded because of
call for the lunch.
A well catered scrumptious buffet lunch was
served that included biryani, quorma, chana-
masala, salad, raita, and nan. Plenty of cold
beverages and water were available as a
requirement for that hot-day. After the lunch,
people preferred to spend time relaxing and not
taking part in physical activities. The
participants formed groups and started chatting
about the golden days of NED.
The organizers of the family picnic arranged
games with young kids who played various
games enthusiastically. In the mean time, lady
volunteers cleaned-up the tables and arranged
the tables to serve mouth watering dessert
(kheer) and water melon. A tug-of-war was also
arranged for men and women separately that was
enjoyed by every participant. After all this
hectic activities on a very hot day, everyone was
served tea (doodh-patti) that was especially
prepared by one of the dedicated lady volunteers
and the taste was real karak.
At the end, prizes were distributed to the
children who had won various games.
At around 4 pm, the picnic event was concluded with a note of thanks from the NEDAC President, Ismat Kamal to all participants, the Social Committee headed by Arif Ali Syed and its members Nassir Mohiuddin, Muhammad Farooq, Aman Siddiqui and Farrukh Karamat. He also praised the services of the volunteers including the ladies namely Mrs. Arif, Mrs. Nassir, Mrs. Farooq, Mrs. Aman, Mrs. Talat,
Ms. Farah and others.

FIRST PICTURE OF THE EARTH
from space transmitted by US Satellite
Explorer VI on Aug 7, 1959.
By Aman Siddiqui, P.Eng.
This image of the earth revolutionized the
human mindset and changed the accepted
wisdom about the planet. Now we could see our
Home, this planet Earth, in its entirety in one
frame. We could easily observe its limits.
The common belief that we have unlimited
supply of air, water, soil and other resources that
can replenish automatically according to our
needs was tarnished. It could be felt; this is all
we have got. A carefree lifestyle approach and
way of thinking was badly dented. The stance of
advocates of sustainable development got
fortified.
Everything is integrated on the earth through
complex natural processes going on
continuously to make this earth habitable for
human beings. If we adapt to these natural
conditions, these processes will maintain this
Earth to be sufficient for our needs.
Entitlement of equal rights for all humans is
the law of the Earth. The population of the world
has crossed the mark of 7 billion people. This
planet belongs to all of us. It becomes
everyone’s responsibility to take care of our
home so that all who live on this planet enjoy
the blessings of the God without interruption or
fear of loss of health or property.
Urban life requires that the technologies to be
developed for an artificial style of living. We
have to start thinking the way nature wants us to.
This lifestyle needs consumption of huge
amount of energy, wastage of precious mineral
and natural resources and the pollution of soil,
water and air.
The knowledge of how our demands on nature
are impacting our lives is necessary. Once we
develop this understanding about the link
between environment and our activities, it will
become easy to adapt to the lifestyle that is close
to nature, healthy and more joyful.
The knowledge is a tool which can make the
behaviours of the policy makers responsible
towards environment. They will be able to
derive policies at all three levels of the
government, which may lead to the environment
where we have cleaner air, more biodiversity,
healthier water bodies, certainty in weather
patterns, etc.
Our home Earth deserves; better Management
of Resources, Efficient and Cleaner
Technologies, Friendly Relationship among
Humans and a Responsible way of living.

VALIMA OF OSAID SYED’S SON
Marriage is a great event for every Muslim. This
is the way Allah continues the life on this earth.
Institution of marriage is the foundation on
which whole building of human life stands.
Those people are fortunate who are blessed with
obedient children and get the opportunity to get
them married.
This time it is our beloved Board Member,
Finance Secretary Mr. Osaid Syed whose son,
Dr. Fahad Syed was married to Dr. Sara Javed.
The Valima ceremony was held in the Banquet
Hall of a Hotel in Brampton on September 4th
2011. The auspicious gathering on this occasion
enjoyed the heart warming poetry by Rasool
Kaleemi; stimulating speech by Mohammad
Khalid on the importance of Marriage and
Rights & Duties of Husband and Wife: Islamic
perspective; poetry of Rana Akbar Abadi (Sohail
Rana's father) named "Pund Nama-e-Pidr"
delivered by Fahad's uncle, which won the
hearts of so many fathers there; and a musical
program. A good number of NEDAC members
who are family friends of Osaid Syed also
attended the event.
Sara and Fahad are both working as Resident
Medical Doctors in Texas, US. All NEDAC
members wish the couple a happy and
prosperous life and pray that Allah bless all
NEDAC Members with such happy moments.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The world’s population will increase by 150,000 people each day for the next 40 years. It requires an increase of
70% in food production by that time, while the cultivated acreage of land will keep on shrinking. So to feed
everyone, we have to increase per acre yield.
By 2030, world will need 60% more energy than today. While supply of fossil fuels decreases, we have to find
sustainable methods of producing energy. Meeting the increasing demands of the growing population will require
many people working together. People who can collaborate across borders, governments, companies,
organizations and cultures to derive solutions – both large and small – that improve lives around the world.

JOKES
**************
Once, Raja of Kashmir was a guest of Nizam of
Hyderabad. He was very impressed by the
development and construction of the estate. He
asked Nizam to help Raja in building Kashmir.
Nizam promised. After sometime, Nizam sent a
very professional and competent engineer to
Kashmir. The Raja very happily presented the
Engineer before his court with high praise for
him. The Engineer out of modesty reacted ‘Oh
no, I am nothing. It is the greatness of Nizam,
who has given me so much importance.’ The
deputy of Raja mentioned some of his projects
but again the Engineer very humbly said, ‘Oh
no, that was all teamwork’. Once again,
someone asked what his plans for Kashmir were.
He replied, ‘It will not be my plans, it will be
your plans, you will do ….’ And so on. The Raja
angrily said, ‘Why has Nizam sent a useless
person like you. Go Back to Hyderabad!’
**************
A mathematician, a physicist, and an engineer
were all given a red rubber ball and told to find
the volume.
The mathematician carefully measured the
diameter and evaluated a triple integral. The
physicist filled a beaker with water, put the ball
in the water, and measured the total
displacement. The engineer looked up the model
and serial numbers in his red-rubber-ball table.
**************
On the train to a math and engineering
convention, a group of math majors and a group
of engineering majors sat in the same car. Each
of the math majors had his/her train ticket, but it
became clear that the group of engineers had
only ONE ticket amongst them. The math
majors started laughing and snickering.
When one of the engineers said "Here comes the
conductor", all of the engineers went into the
bathroom. The math majors were puzzled. The
conductor came aboard, said "tickets please" and
collected tickets from all the math majors. He
then went to the bathroom, knocked on the door
and said "ticket please" and the engineers stuck
the ticket under the door. The conductor took it
and left, and the engineers came out of the
bathroom a few minutes later. The math majors
felt really stupid. So, on the way back the
convention, the group of math majors had one
ticket for the group. They started snickering at
the engineers, for this time the whole group had
NO tickets amongst them. When the engineer
lookout said "Conductor coming!", all the
engineers went to one bathroom. All the math
majors went to another bathroom. Just before the
conductor came on board, one of the engineers
left the bathroom, knocked on the other
bathroom, and said "ticket please.”

KARACHI DIARY
By Syed Hussain Haider
It is my pleasure to share a few
highlights of my visit to Karachi, as
requested by our new and very active
editor of upcoming Q4 NEDAC
News.
I was in Karachi for the whole month
of November 2011, where I attended
literary and musical evenings, visited
NEDUET, enjoyed food and
company of relatives and friends
including 1966 EE batch mates of
NED. Here are a few of those events
and observations which may be of
interest to NEDAC friends.
Visit to NED: Karachi is the city of NED
and I consider my visit to Karachi complete
only when I visit my dear Alma Mater. I was
lucky to be there just before exams, when
the classes are off and faculty has some
breathing time. I was pleased to learn that
Dr. Muzaffar Mehmood is now Pro VC. He
and I worked at Jafri Associates on a power
generation project and another project in late
80’s. He received
me very warmly and we remained together
for more than 3 hours, reminiscing good old
days. During my meeting with him, I also
discussed items emailed to me by our NED
liaison Secretary Mohammad Khalid. This
included technical presentation by a
NEDAC member visiting Karachi, helping
NED engineers visiting/migrating to Canada
etc. Dr. Mehmood promptly
responded by email
welcoming the ideas and
identifying areas where
such presentation from

NEDAC and briefed him
about our discussion

regarding technical presentations. He
appreciated the idea and NEDAC’s interest
in NEDUET. VC fondly remembered his
Toronto visit and reception.
Air pollution: One pleasant thing I
observed was a decrease in air pollution.
Compared to the past, I found Karachi air
much cleaner and smog free. The credit goes
to extensive use of Compressed Natural Gas.
CNG stations outnumber petrol stations.
Besides PSO and Shell, there are CNG of all
kind, color and names such as Yousuf Zai,
Sardar, Target, and Friends Etc.
Almost all car manufactures except Honda
now deliver company fitted CNG kit
version. I was told that Landi Renzo
Pakistan is exporting CNG kits to various
countries including China, Brazil and Italy. I
was also amazed to know that Pakistan is the
leading country by far in the use of CNG
vehicles. Out of over 13 million vehicles,
Pakistan has 2.7 million CNG vehicles -
followed by Iran 1.95 million, Brazil 1.6
million and India 1.1 million.
Food Courts and Food Streets
For old campus graduate like me, a visit to
Burns road and enjoying hot n spicy gola
Kabab and putting out its fire by a big glass
of Dilbahar Lassi is a fun I never miss.
There are many other conventional style
food streets in every locality, but the taste of
Malai Boti, Reshmeen Kabab and Dacca
Sweets at Rashid Minhas Road is still alive
in my taste buds. But nothing compares in
style and food extravaganza with the
massive food and entertainment enclave at
Port Grand near Native Jetty Bridge.
Ranging from several kinds of shops to a
comprehensive food court, Port Grand
boasts of both local and foreign cuisine in
abundance. Inspired by world famous
seafront projects in the United States such as
Pier 39 in San Francisco, Quincy Market in
Boston and 3rd Street Los Angeles, this
place is worth a visit.

Sukkur Barrage (Ex Lloyds Barrage)
TOUR OF PAKISTAN
By Muhammad Najmi
Recently I visited our beautiful and amazing
country, ‘Pakistan’. Pakistan is a God’s gift
to those who are living there; working and
contributing their share to their homeland.
In Pakistan, the God-gifted weather is
always in favour of its sons and daughters.
The day time temperature is 25-40º C, but
every evening of this land from Karachi to
Murree is
beautiful with an
amazing temp of
20-25º C. You can
enjoy this weather
at all times.
Most of the land
area is fertile and
cultivated, with
output of two to
three crops a year.
There is no
restriction from
natural weather
conditions and
crop types. You can cultivate fruits, wheat,
vegetables, rice, beans, and grain.
According to location of the land, farms of
fish, poultry, cattle, goat etc are also an
option. The taste of every Pakistan-grown
fruit is marvellous – Pakistan is a producer
of world class Mango, Water Melon, Apple,
Banana, and Grapes in several varieties.
World’s largest and best irrigation facilities
are available in Pakistan. This irrigation
system is located in the central Pakistan city,
‘Sukkur’. It is one of the oldest cities and
inhabited since hundreds of years. The
Sukkur Barrage was built in 1923-1932, it
has 66 steel gates. Through these gates
Sukkur barrage can irrigate 5 million acres
of land in Sind. The total length of these
canals are 10,000 Km. Sukkur Barrage
working efficiency was upgraded in 2004-
2005, and now this barrage system is
capable to irrigate more than 5 million acres
of land for the next 60 to 70 years. This
barrage has 7 canals and some of the canals
are bigger than Suez Canal of Egypt. The
City of Sukkur itself is a tourist attraction
with Sukkur Barrage, a Beautiful Park inside
the Mighty River Indus which is close to
Sukkur barrage, Ayub Bridge, Sadho Bella
Island and steel bridge on river Indus. The
whole city is surrounded by cultivated
agricultural lands and historical places like
thousands years old Date Palm tree farms
planted by the Muslim soldier, Muhammad
Bin Qasim, in 711 AD. It covers an area of
thousands of acres.
The small city of Gwadar, located in the
extreme south west of Pakistan, is now a
new and modern deep sea port of Asia and
world’s third deep sea port. The city is
designed to accommodate two million
inhabitants in the future. The government of
Pakistan has plans to build new Shipbuilding
and Ship Repairs facilities near the Gwadar
Page 19 of 21
City Beaches of Gwadar
New Port of Gwadar
Port, for Roo Roo container berth facilities,
and Oil Piers for up to million tons capacity
large oil tankers from world wide.
The Gwadar city Master plan was designed
on the same type and model as Islamabad
and Defence Housing Society, Karachi. The
city has plans to build all basic facilities like
Roads, Schools, Hospitals, Shopping
centres, Parks, Power Plants, Water
Desalination plant to supply clean water to
the city etc. Immigration offices and security
systems are operational in the city for
foreign flag vessels’ staff
and crew.
People of Baluchistan
are the luckiest people of
the country who will
enjoy their land with
bright future. According
to the planner, Gwadar
will become new Dubai
of Pakistan.
Muzaffar Garh, a city
between the garrison city
Multan and Kot Addu,
has two large thermal
power plants in its
neighbourhood, Lal Pir
Power Plant and
Kot Addu Power
Plant. Muzaffar
Garh city is
surrounded by
orchards of
Mango trees and
you can choose
the best world-
class quality
Mangoes from
their local market.
In 2001, Muzaffar
Garh
City become
home for a new
and very modern
oil refinery,
named PARCO
Refinery, which was completed under the
supervision of Japanese experts.
The average temperature of the area is above
30º C in day time, but their evening is
comfortable most of the year. This Fertile
Crescent is popular for its cotton crops,
special wood furniture manufacturing
industry and handy crafts. However, these
industries need some especial attention to
modernize it according to latest international market requirements.
