President’s Message

Hello Marin Golden Threads Members,

Happy Spring! In the deep spring cleaning that has been

happening at my house, I’ve come across a few items of clothing

that were set aside because they need to be mended; a ripped pair

of jeans, a whole in a fine knit sweater, etc. I didn’t want to throw

them away so I searched around and learned about visible

mending.

Visible mending seems like a great way to use embroidery skills

to repair special pieces of clothing and even jazz them up a bit.

For example, creating an eyelet out of the hole in the sweater by

stitching around the opening and adding fabric or lace in the

middle to create a scene. You could stitch in a piece of lace or

embroider decorate stitches. Sashiko seems to be a popular

technique used in visible mending.

Another example of visible mending that I saw was needle felting

different shaped elbow patches onto favorite and much loved

sweaters. They could be oval, rectangular, star, or heart shaped.

I’m hoping to try some of these techniques on the clothes I have

that need to be mended. Maybe this can help you give new life to

some old clothes.

Programs Notes from the Program Team

April 22, 2017 – Upcycle mart & Stitch in Time to stitch together and an opportunity to finish a project you have been working on.

You can also ask for help with a project you have been struggling with.

Bring any stitchery items, books or magazines to sell to our Upcycle Market. Be prepared to buy some items and support this chapter fundraiser.

May 20, 2017 – Lacy Canvas Scissor Case – Liesbeth Matthieu Petite Project from EGA Web Site - Margaret Bendig Design

It is time to do some counted thread or canvas work. This project on colored #18 mesh canvas is small, stitches up fast and uses a lot of different stitches. It is also easy to assemble.

This petite project is a design from Margaret Bendig and comes from the EGA website.

You can use any colors and keep it monochrome like the example or you can choose a variety of colors. I chose mine in the spirit of Spring.

July 22 – Annual Picnic – hostess Fran Thorssen - 11:30AM Annual picnic at Fran Thorssen’s house, at 2311 Novato Boulevard, in Novato. Take time to catch up, enjoy the outdoor picnic area and each other’s company. Come see for yourself how beautiful the garden looks.

Bring a dish and drinks to share - bring your decorated hat from the anniversary picnic. Looking forward to seeing all of you!

August 26, 2017 – Ukrainian Whitework with Julianne Mibach Julianne was inspired by her June 2016 GPR seminar class to design and teach a small Ukrainian Whitework design suitable for an ornament, pincushion, box top, sachet, or small framed piece. Stitches are simple. Materials are few and will be kitted. Laurel Knapp enthusiastically offered to assist in charting the design. Picture to follow in 2017.

This is a Whitework piece and will be worked with 2 sizes of white perle cotton on a 25 count white ground evenweave fabric. Please don't be intimidated by the color or fabric count. Stitches worked will include satin stitch, double cable stitch, and 1 or 2 other stitches. The design is small in size and you will be able to complete it within a few hours.

Please bring the following supplies to the August meeting: 4-inch hoop, size 24 tapestry needles, lighting, magnification (if needed), and your usual stitching supplies.

Workshop Vima Micheli Workshop - We had a great time with part one of this workshop. Vima is a delight and the time went by too quickly. Before we knew it, the day was over. Of course, we all have homework - you've probably see Julianne's completed homework assignment on our facebook page. Way to go Julianne! Looking forward to our second class. It should be as much fun as the first. Learning a lot! Betsy Morgan - I've contacted Betsy about scheduling a class

for Spring of 2019. Seems like a long time to wait for a workshop, so let me know if you don't want to wait that long. Just didn't want to interfere with saving for seminar! One last thing - If you have any suggestions for teachers, techniques, or projects you would like to see as a workshop, please let me know. I'm always looking for new ideas and your help would be much appreciated. Chris

GPR

The region is sponsoring a GCC entitled Isabella - Italian Drawn Thread. How that works is the Region pays the group fee and the members taking the class pay for the text and purchase their own supplies. See the information enclosed with the newsletter. Seminar 2018 is quickly approaching. Information about the Stitch the logo contest is also enclosed with this newsletter.

Marin County Fair We’ve been passing around sign-up sheets at our meetings for fair monitors, judging clerks, etc. This year most of our judges seemed to want to judge on Monday, June 12 - so we need additional clerks that day. If you are interested in clerking and/or monitoring, and won't be attending a meeting, please let Laurel

know so she can add you to the list. There are still openings available so check your calendar and let us know if you can help out. We rely on the support of MGT to make this successful. Stitching Angels I want to thank all of you who committed to the Stitching Angel awards for the Fair. We will have $400 in Stitching Angel prizes and an additional $175 in Ruth Cardin prizes. Again, thanks to you all. I'll be collecting funds in April. Laurel and Chris

? ? It’s a Mystery ? ?

The fourth installment of the new Mystery My Favorite Things was sent out 2 weeks ago. If you have any questions or are unable to open the chart, please let us know. We hope you enjoy this one. We certainly have.

Amazon Purchases

If any of you are like me and do a lot of shopping

on Amazon, then you can help our guild financially.

I just found out that if you are an Amazon Prime

member and go to amazonsmile.com, you can select

our guild as the charity you would like to benefit.

Just go to Your Account, go down to Change Your

Charity, and then type in Embroiderer's Guild of

Amerca Inc. located in Novato,CA. A portion of

your purchase will go to our guild! I think that's

fabulous. Too bad I didn't know about it before -

did a lot of Christmas shopping through Amazon!

Saving for Seminar The older I get the faster time seems to go so you may laugh when I tell you that Seminar 2018 is only 15 months away but experience tells me that July 20th 2018 will be here before we know it. This also reminds me that it’s never too soon to start saving! On the following page is an “envelope” that you can print out and use to start saving (you can also download a copy of the envelope from the seminar website). If you start setting aside just $5.00 a day now, you’ll have plenty saved by January 2018 to cover registration and by June 2018 to cover your travel and other expenses (like the Merchandise Night). Seminar Faculty Selections The faculty selections will be revealed at the Spring Retreat and posted to the website the following Monday. There is a wonderful line-up of instructors and I’d like to thank Sara Zander for her hard work in pulling this together. Seminar Goodie Bags I’ve heard that some chapters are already thinking about their gift for the seminar goodies bag. Last year there was a wonderful selections of items as the picture below illustrates.

So that we continue to have a wide variety of gifts (and no duplicates), please contact our Goodie Bag Committee Chairwoman Brandy Shaw at: [email protected]. A couple of things to think about as you are brainstorming ideas: 1) What would delight you to receive as a gift and 2) Since this gift shows the spirit of your chapter, how can you creatively represent that? Please also remember that you will need to donate 150 items to ensure that all participants receive a gift from you. Request for Photos from Past Seminars Currently, on the seminar website, there are a number of photos of Seminar 2016. The executive committee thought it would be wonderful if we could also add photos from earlier seminars. If you have some that you would like to share, please contact Jacquelyn Jenkins at [email protected]. If you have just a few you can probably just email them to her. If you’d like to send more, she can help you figure out how best to do that. Just for fun, here’s a photo that Karen Nadeau sent us. Does this bring back memories for anyone?

Savings Envelope for Days of Vines and Stitches

GPR Seminar July 20-25, 2018

Sonoma State University (fold on the dotted lines and tape the edges to create an envelope)

Set a goal of $5.00 a day (or whatever you can set aside).

Every bit helps! It may be as easy as one less coffee drink per day or one less meal out per week or, it may involve

getting a little more creative so you can put that money aside for seminar. Either way, if you decide a trip to all the fun

and learning at Seminar is worth it, make it your “saving priority”.

Dream about how you’d like to spend the money you’ve saved once you get to the Days of Vines and Stitches at

Sonoma State University in 2018!

-----------------fold here---------------

Setting aside just five dollars ($5.00) a day between now and January 2018 will help cover your registration expenses and by June 2018 you’ll have enough for travel and other expenses (think Merchandise Night and the Boutique
