Negro Baseball LeagueBy: Evan C. Moore
Negro Baseball League Beginning
• Some Black people played on integrated baseball teams when organized baseball teams began.
• A few Black players made it to the major leagues in the early 1800s.
Exclusion
In 1867, they voted not to admit any team that “may be composed of one or more colored persons”.
Their reasoning was irrational and racist.
The First Successful Baseball League
The National Association of Professional Baseball Players was the first professional baseball league in 1871.
The Black team called the Pythians tried to join the professional league and was denied.
Negro League in the Making
The Negro Baseball League was not well documented because the White Press was not recording the stats and scores.
The first championship in October 1867 was won by the Philadelphia Excelsiors going against the Brooklyn Uniques.

NBL Teams and Players There were originally no organized leagues.
There were individual teams that barnstormed.
NBL Teams Two primary Negro leagues began with teams
rotating in and out of the leagues.
In 1940, the teams from the National Negro League (NNL) were: Homestead Grays, Baltimore Elite Giants, Newark Eagles, New York Cubans, Philadelphia Stars, and New York Black Yankees.
In 1940, the teams in the National American League (NAL) were: Kansas City Monarchs, Cleveland Bears, Memphis Red Sox, Birmingham Black Barons, Chicago American Giants, and the Indianapolis Crawfords.

Paige.
Satchel Paige was a great pitcher.
He pitched against Joe DiMaggio a legend on the New York Yankees.
Joe DiMaggio hit one ball on his fourth time up in the tenth inning.

In 1945, Jackie Robinson was the first Black person to be signed under contract with the all White Major League Baseball team.
He was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Jackie Robinson
Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson was in World War II and was promoted to lieutenant in the Army for the all Black unit.

After the Brooklyn Dodgers drafted Jackie Robinson, other Major League teams drafted all of the good players from the Negro Leagues.
People stopped going to the Negro League games because they could go to the Major League games and see Black people play.
Not Moving
James Thomas “Cool Papa” Bell of the Kansas City Monarchs was one of the fastest runners ever to play in the Negro League and retired in 1946 at forty three years old.
