Neighbors of Pinehurst www.neighborsofpinehurst.com A note from the president March 2018 If you are like me, you are ready to welcome the tapestry of colors that will soon paint our southern landscape in the glorious broad strokes of springtime. As the crocus and hyacinths fade, among their replacements are daffodils, quince, and forsythia competing with flowering trees such as dogwoods and redbuds, as well as the colorful shades of budding trees whose leaves will gradually unfurl. In our region, we can be thankful for the ever-changing rows of peach and apple blossoms hinting of future pleasures drawn from their sweet harvests. The spectrum of nature’s colors seems endless, but there is a caveat. If only we could avoid the natural companion of springtime’s palette, the dreaded onslaught of pollen! Instead we anxiously look to the sky, wishing away this powdery insult to our senses with thoughts of a welcomed downpour and the unanimous sigh of relief that it will bring. So, March is here and it is time to clean the cobwebs from your golf carts and clubs, check the strings of your tennis rackets, purchase some new balls, and get ready to welcome spring! As you look at the Neighbors of Pinehurst calendar you will notice open dates to schedule your own rite of passage into this season of rebirth. It’s a good time to consider the ongoing options within NoP that offer opportunities for new friends and new experiences. Think about joining a book club, a bridge group, a recipe club, a wine club, or a game group such as Bunco or Hand, Knee and Foot. What’s your pleasure? April is just around the corner and it sounds like another fun Progressive Dinner has been planned for April 28 th . Neighbors of Pinehurst www.neighborsofpinehurst.com A note from the president March 2018 If you are like me, you are ready to welcome the tapestry of colors that will soon paint our

southern landscape in the glorious broad strokes of springtime. As the crocus and hyacinths fade, among their replacements are daffodils, quince, and forsythia competing with flowering trees such as dogwoods and redbuds, as well as the colorful shades of budding trees whose

leaves will gradually unfurl. In our region, we can be thankful for the ever-changing rows of peach and apple blossoms hinting of future pleasures drawn from their sweet harvests. The spectrum of nature’s colors seems endless, but there is a caveat. If only we could avoid the

natural companion of springtime’s palette, the dreaded onslaught of pollen!

As

you look at the Neighbors of Pinehurst calendar you will notice open dates to schedule your own rite of passage into this season of rebirth. It’s a good time to consider the ongoing

options within NoP that offer opportunities for new friends and new experiences. Think about joining a book club, a bridge group, a recipe club, a wine club, or a game group such as Bunco or Hand, Knee and Foot. What’s your pleasure?

April is just around the corner and it sounds like another fun Progressive Dinner has been planned for April 28th. We hope that you will consider joining us at this event, whether hosting

a table or being among the guests. The Progressive Dinner is always a great way to embrace friendships, both new and old. I hope to see you there!

Important notice: The next board meeting will be held at 4:00 p.m. March 7th at the Herring residence, 30

Ladies Marathon Bridge - March

Grandslammers – Grandslammer LVI finished playing in January. The results are below.

Grandslammer LX, a Chicago Marathon, is ready to begin except we need one more team. I am beginning to take names for Grandslammer LXI, so if you aren’t already signed up for a new marathon, please do so now for the marathon of your choice and send in your money. As soon as we have eight teams ready to play, we will begin the next marathon. New members are always welcome.

The marathons are grouped . . .by the player’s preference - Chicago or Rubber bridge scoring. As soon as eight teams, in either group are signed up, play will begin.

This is a continuous process. Sign up now by calling Phyllis Clark at 215-8730 or emailing her at [email protected]. Send your check/s for $10/lady made payable to Neighbors of Pinehurst to Phyllis

Clark, 64 Stoneykirk Drive, Pinehurst, NC 28374.

The documents are sent out in PDF format and can be read and printed from Adobe Reader, just like the

newsletter. For those who do not have the email option, we will continue to use snail mail.

Hostesses, please remember to schedule your games as early as possible giving your opponents several

options. Everyone has busy schedules, so set up your game at least a month in advance. Thank you.

Need a Partner? Give Phyllis a call at 215-8730. She tries to hook up players who are looking for a

game. Have you considered playing in another marathon with a different partner? Maybe a new member? Another friend? Or someone who’s looking for a partner?

Ladies Marathon Results – Grandslammer LVI completed play in January. The teams which placed first and second had really great scores! The rest of the teams must have been in a race for third place. Or else, we were playing a different game than the winners. The final results are:

1st Connie Domingues & Audrey Larkin 25,050 $80 2nd Terry Cantele & Valerie Slade 22,520 $48

3rd Nancy Brooks & Diane Galusky 17,770 $32

Congratulations to all three teams!

Couples Marathon

Couples Marathon DD has started. Signups will continue until there are eight couples and another marathon will begin. Sign up and join in the fun! It’s a very nice way to spend an evening. Here’s wishing you great cards!

Games are scheduled so that you play with a different couple once a month for seven (7) months. If you enjoy bridge, this is a great way to meet new couples as well as spend an evening with friends. To sign

up, send a check for $15 / couple, made payable to Neighbors of Pinehurst, to Lynne Moore, 32 Lasswade Drive, Pinehurst, NC, 28374. Checks may be mailed or dropped in the basket on Lynne’s porch. If there are any questions, call Lynne at 235-3929 or email her at [email protected].

Page 11: Neighbors of Pinehurst...capable of holding 20 cards or more. If you would like to play or learn, please contact our Neighbors Chair, Carol Pizzi, cpizzi2@yahoo.com or call her on

How Marathon Bridge Works – Each Marathon consists of seven months of scheduled play with one

additional month allowed for the completion of all rounds. There are no games scheduled in December. Couples or lady partners may schedule play at their convenience during the eight-month period. Signups are on a first-come-first-served basis. When a group fills up, new signups are placed on a waiting list until

there are eight teams to form a new group. This procedure continues throughout the year. So, if you are finishing one marathon and wish to continue or sign up for an additional one send in your check (s). For more information contact either Lynne or Phyllis.

etc. The requirements for being a “Neighbors” group are simple: 1) All the members must belong to Neighbors of Pinehurst. 2) You must use the ladies on the substitute list above as substitutes, whenever possible. To my knowledge there are four duplicate groups that currently qualify for support. There are two

the 1st Monday Group headed by Judith Kelley; the 1st Friday Group (Bridge Babes) headed by Phyllis Clark; and the 3rd Monday Group which Phyllis also heads up. There is another 3rd Monday Game, which plays at Elliott’s restaurant. There is a 4-table duplicate group, which plays 28 boards. They start at 9:45 and

break for lunch. Are there any other NOP groups out there?
