BUSHTON and CLYFFE PYPARD WOMEN'S INSTITUTE With our thanks to Peter Gantlett, four native trees donated by the WI have been planted, along with two given by the Parish Council, in the village hall field. They will be labelled - Wild Cherry, Silver Birch, Field Maple, Crab Apple – as a centenary commemoration for the Wiltshire Federation of Women's Institutes. A very small but willing contribution to the global 'trillion trees' idea!

Our December meeting was largely a social time with some origami thrown in – some of us, we learnt, are better suited to this skill than others! And in January our meeting took a more serious turn, with one of our members leading us through a thought-provoking look at mental health and the need to make opportunities for open discussion about it. We had also enjoyed a New Year dinner, when the hall looked very attractive with tables set for dinner including candlelight and floral decoration. We like to do things properly! Our February meeting will begin at 7.15 on Thursday 20th with business – we hear about WI trips and courses, discuss our own plans for visits, the Big Breakfast and so on – and then welcome a speaker who will advise on navigating our finances online, plus the security aspect. All are welcome to this, “You and Your Finances – Keep Safe” beginning at 8pm. We will be putting on a Big Breakfast on Sunday 8th March – all welcome – please see notice elsewhere in the newsletter. Our membership currently stands at 25 – we will happily welcome more members, so if you have not yet had the chance to try the WI, or thought you might leave it for a few years, come soon! You can have a free taster evening and if you would like any further details, please contact Sally Fox 01249 891442 or [email protected].

Bushton Bookworms "The Gentleman in Moscow" proved to have been a very good read, liked by all who were present at the discussion. It was strange how we as individuals had remembered different parts of the book more clearly than others. It is quite a long book and seems a bit slow to start with, but well worth reading. And now the next few dates - note change from 18th Feb to 3rd March so that no meeting in February.

• March 3rd "The Constant Gardener" by John le Carre

• March 31st "The Miniaturist" by Jessie Burton

• Monday April 20th "The Keeper of Lost Things" by Ruth Hogan Happy reading! If you would like to join in with one or more of our light-

hearted discussions please get in touch - new people always welcome! Barbara Davis 0796 223 6678

Calligraphy in Clyffe

We would be very pleased to welcome anyone who is interested in learning or developing a new skill. Beginners are welcome. We usually meet twice each month on the 2nd and 4th Thursday mornings 10.00 to 12.00 in the Village Hall (13th and 27th February). Each member just pays their share of the hire of the hall and towards the

general running costs. If you are interested in joining this group or would like

more information or to come for a “taster” session, please get in touch with Jan

Christmas Fair

The beginning of December seems a long

time ago now but thank you to everyone

who supported this event in so many

different ways.

After expenses approx £800 was added to

help with the upkeep of St Peter’s Church.

Planning has already started for the annual Plant Fair which will be held at Bushton Manor this year on SUNDAY 10th May from 11-3pm. If you feel you would like to become involved with the event in any way please make contact with Barbara 01793 739017. Help is always needed before, during and after the day. Are you sorting out your shed or garage – any still usable but no longer wanted garden tools can be sold and if you are splitting up perennial plants why not pot a few up for selling at the Plant Fair? Do you have any unwanted gifts that might be suitable for the Tombola maybe? Every little helps!

Bushton Village Hall News Thank you to all who supported the Christmas Walk and lunch – after expenses £90 was handed to the Parish Council for upkeep of the local footpaths. The Summer Walk and Pot Luck Supper is planned for FRIDAY 19th JUNE. Next BIG QUIZ will be on Saturday 28th March – starting at 7:30, teams of up to 6 or make up a team with others on the night. A light supper is provided. Cost per person £5. Contact Jill Maris to reserve your places or for further information. 101 Club. No draw this month as WE NEED YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS!! If you have already paid by Standing Order then thank you, if you usually pay by electronic transfer then please do so and if you want to hand in your £15 per person or wish us to collect, then please get in touch with Jill or Barbara – we have a few spaces so if you are new to the village then we would be very pleased to have you join – half the money goes towards the up keep of the Village Hall and the rest gets paid back in monthly prizes. Do remember the Village Hall is available for YOU to hire – at the last committee meeting it was decided not to increase the hire charges which are from £9 per hour weekdays and from £11 per hour from Friday evening and over weekends and that covers the use of the Main Hall, the Meeting room and the Kitchen. Charges for using just the small meeting room are by arrangement – an ideal venue for a monthly coffee morning – maybe someone would like to organise one? Contacts: Jill Maris 07817431556 [email protected] Barbara Davis 07962 236678 [email protected] Pop Up Restaurant in the Village Hall Thoughts are going along this line:

• The Meeting Room would be an ideal place to have a pop – up restaurant – maybe once a month for a maximum of 20 people

• Professional Chefs could be invited to provide a menu (with choices) for a three-course meal. They would cook, serve and wash up.

• In addition, as an alternative, anyone with a current Food and Hygiene Certificate* could cook say, a two or three course pub/home cooking style meal. This would be intended as a ‘pub replacement’, for locals to enjoy a cost-effective meal, and socialise. This could be on an ad hoc basis, whenever someone was prepared to cook and when the meeting room is available (i.e. no main hall booking). Any volunteers? Any profits go to the cook, or they may choose to give to a charity of their choice.

• Guests - bring your own drinks

• The menu would be sent out by email say 2 or 3 weeks ahead of the date, to people who have said that they would like to get involved and you would need to confirm the menu choice with payment by a cut – off date.

• Example menu for the pub style meal: some form of pie (gf), seasonal veg, followed by bread & butter pudding or fruit salad (gf) with cream or vanilla ice cream or maybe an easy theme night, e.g. baked potatoes. All ideas welcome! To keep it simple, we do understand that all dietary requirements cannot be catered for by all cooks every time – if you don’t fancy the menu one time, just look out for the next date as another cook may choose to offer a vegan special or whatever!

Before we do any further investigating, we need to know that sufficient people would be interested in supporting one or other venture. So, if you think that you might like to get involved with cooking or just

enjoying eating someone else’s cooking, please contact either Barbara Davis [email protected] or Anita Gantlett on [email protected] before 14th Feb and we will see what we can do! * Food Safety and Hygiene Courses Level 2 can now be done on line for the cost of £12 Village Hall Photo Competition This is your opportunity to win £1000 for the village hall and £500 for the photographer. The title of the photo should be "Village Life" a photo which characterises the value of community in your village and must be submitted by March 15th to https:/villagehallsurvey.com/survey/photo-competition where you will find the entry form.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN - UPDATE

The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group are currently focused on two matters. The first is the continuing

work to develop the questionnaire to assist with the next stage of the information gathering exercise. The

second is Wiltshire County Council’s affordable housing initiative.

As you may be aware, Wiltshire County Council were developing a plan to build 5-10 affordable houses in

our parish on Council owned land. Some outline ideas were presented at the open Parish Council meeting

last November and a site was discussed at that time - Bishop's Farm by Bushton crossroads.

However, since then a proposal has been put forward where Wiltshire Council will be prioritising its own

Affordable Housing Development over the next 3 years, which will be in the South of the County, due to

practical reasons, as this is where the majority of their stock currently is. Therefore, this site will not be

taken forward by Wiltshire Council at this time. It may however, be revisited in the future. They will work

with the Neighbourhood Plan where possible to help identify land for affordable housing, however it is not

likely to be developed within the next 5 years.”

Therefore, at this time WCC will not be pursuing the development of this site and apologises for any unrest

and unease caused to residents.

However, WCC has asked the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group if it would be able to identify other

possible sites for the development of affordable housing. Both the Parish Council and the Neighbourhood

Plan Steering Group are supportive of this opportunity and a call for non-Council owned sites will be made.

Please remember that if you are in need of affordable housing and have connections with the Parish (for

example you work here, you live here and need to change houses for a good reason, or you have family

connections here} then you should register on the Homes4Wiltshire list (www.homes4wiltshire.co.uk).

Registering will help Wiltshire County Council demonstrate need, making it more likely the County Council

will build them eventually and if they are built, you are more likely to be allocated one. The current

identified affordable housing need is for five houses.

Please look out for updated information on both the call for sites for the possible development of

affordable housing and the forthcoming questionnaire in future newsletters, on the parish website

htps://www.clyffepypard-bushton.com and on Nextdoor (https://nextdoor.co.uk/).

Alternatively, if you have a piece of land that you would like to be considered for affordable housing please

send details to the parish clerk - [email protected].

The volunteer members of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group are: Alan Glasspool, Chris Rickett, Chris Thompson, Ed Rudler,

Guy Rickett (Chair), Marian Kent, Nick Kirton, Peter Gantlett, Rosemary Greenway and Tony Currivan. You can contact the

Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group via the Parish Council – [email protected]

View from the Vicarage. On Tigger and Eeyore The wonderful things about Tigger is that they are bouncy, bouncy, fun, fun, fun. Hmm... I’m temperamentally more of an Eeyore myself. When I’m feeling inclined to gloomy expectations and pessimism it is easy to look at the Tigger-ish people in my life with a jaundiced eye. Mostly I remain aware that I need the positivity and energy of optimists around to keep me going and often Tiggers can make me laugh with them and at myself in a way that renews a better sense of perspective. In a school governors’ subcommittee meeting we were laughing about these differences of style and personality, and touched briefly on the ways that other people might see us very differently especially if we find ourselves feeling bouncy over stuff other people find difficult. Maybe you prefer an accountant you work with to be an apparent Eeyore, even if in their passion for numbers, strategy and calculation faced with a financial challenge they are secret Tiggers. Yet the joy of AA Milne’s Winnie the Pooh stories is that Tiggers and Eeyores (and Kangas and Piglets) all have a part to play. The same is true in our villages and churches – the more we can work with and welcome a variety of approaches, styles and personalities the richer the team of which we are a part becomes and the more likely it is that together we can do more. A Tigger may sometimes need the realism of an Eeyore, and we all know that Pooh is often encouraged and enabled by the kindness and understanding of Piglet. In the language of my faith I’m reminded of this in two ways – the creation stories of Genesis outline a world in which God delights in the amazing diversity of things that squirm and wriggle, fly and swim and the letters of Paul are always reminding the earliest gatherings of Christians that we are one body and need the gifts of even the oddest shaped little toe or the bristliest eyebrow. Perhaps in bigger towns or cities it is easier to gather enough people for a task or celebration only among the like-minded, and sometimes in smaller villages sometimes the contrasting styles of an Eeyore and a Tigger can feel more challenging without the dilution effect of larger numbers. And yet...if, in our smaller communities, we can learn to recognise the value of people who are the same as we are, we may model a fuller and richer pattern of living and working together.

Church Schedule.

We’ve saved a generation, help us save the next This year is a particularly special one for Wiltshire Air Ambulance as we celebrate our 30th year of operation. Countless lives have been saved since we began operating in 1990. As a result, a generation of people have been able to resume their lives and celebrate special milestones such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries or the birth of children and grandchildren. To highlight our work former patients whose lives we have saved are featured in videos each month throughout 2020 on our social media channels and website, along with an opportunity to make a donation. We are only able to provide our vital service thanks to the generosity of people, community groups, schools, businesses and grant-making trusts who make donations. Our charity is not funded directly by the Government and receives no National Lottery grants. It costs £3.75 million a year to keep our lifesaving service operational. Last year we undertook 1,233 missions – an increase of 12% on 2018. We are honoured to serve Wiltshire and surrounding counties. With your help we can be here to save the next generation. To donate, head to our website www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk/generation Registered charity number: 1144097
