REPORT FROM THEPRESIDENTC.A. MCDONALD

Greetings on behalf of the Pulp and Paper Foundation. As we wrap up our 61st year as the NC State Pulp and Paper Foundation, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the distinct honor and privilege of serving as your Foundation President for the past two years. It has been wonderful to serve with a group of companies, individuals, faculty and students who are working to keep NC State as the premier Paper Science program in the country. You should be proud of what the Foundation Board members have accomplished this year, truly fulfilling our “Reason for Being” as stated in our Operating Guidelines:

1. Support regional student recruiting & preparing graduates for industry – The program has 200 students with over 16.5% of the incoming freshman class from out of state, with many from mill towns. 100% placement for job seekers at graduation.

2. Support fund raising, internships and other experiences – Over 24 companies are represented on the board with five active committees: Corporate Development, Individual Giving, Student Advisory, Scholarship and Program Advisory. They have raised over $280,000 for scholarships and $85,000 for the Paper International Experience, while providing paid internships, even for freshmen!

3. Encourage graduate study and research – PSE students are involved in undergraduate research to provide real-world research experiences.

4. Support the faculty and administration – Your board has participated in the recruiting and hiring of program staff and collaborated with faculty on course content.

5. Encourage equipment donations – The Baby Wolfpack has a new machine drive system thanks to a generous donation from Rockwell Automation, one of our new Board partners!

Our 61st year has truly been a success. Just as in 1954 when the Foundation began, a common vision to support our industry coupled with an uncommon commitment to the school, the students, and the program has seen a significant investment in the future that will ensure a new generation of NC State Paper Science Engineers will continue the legacy of contributions to our companies’ success for years to come. I would like to extend my personal thanks and congratulations to all of you for a job well done!

REPORT FROM THEEXECUTIVE DIRECTORJennifer PiercyIt has been a great year for our program and foundation. As you can read throughout this report, we have accomplished many great things this year. Here are some noteworthy achievements from 2014-15:

• Record student enrollments• Record corporate giving• Sustained individual giving from a record high last year• 60th Anniversary Celebration • First ever “class pledging contest” led by our newest grads • Increase in the diversity of our incoming students (ethnic, gender and geographical diversity)• Hosted second annual “Foundation Awareness Event” for our student body• Equipment donations from Rockwell Automation• Ten *NEW* Sophomore Superstar Scholarships to celebrate amazing rising second year students

Additionally, some of our equally notable accomplishments are not as easily quantifiable, but none the less invaluable to us.

• Connecting with alumni in Memphis, TN, Florence, SC, Asheville, NC, Fernandina Beach, FL and Raleigh to bring them together and show our appreciation.

• NC State’s Giving website featuring one of our faithful donors.• A 2015 PSE graduate was one of only six students chosen as a feature for publicity during graduation week.• Having the TAPPI William L. Cullison Award given to an NC State student for the second year in a row.• Hosting recruiting events in North Carolina, Florida and Virginia this past year; adding South Carolina and Tennessee to

the list in the upcoming year.

All of these things are possible because of the immense amount of support that is funneled into this foundation and program. This happens because we have excellent, world class faculty and alumni, donors, board members and friends who consistently give of time, talents, resources and treasures. In short, it all happens because of YOU!

We thank you and continue to work towards each year being better than the next!

MESSAGE FROM THE DEANMARY C. WATZIN

This year, our Paper Science & Engineering program continued to grow and thrive. I am proud to say it is one of the strongest in the College of Natural Resources.

By providing a hands-on education that serves the pulp and paper industry, the program is advancing our college’s mission of graduating career-ready students who go on to provide cutting-edge solutions to natural resource management challenges.

The program boasts 100% job placement and some of the highest starting salaries on campus. Our students, like Nelessa Lewis featured on the cover of this year’s report, graduate ahead of the curve. After two internships with International Paper where Nelessa spent a total of six months taking part in paper machine trials and wastewater treatment studies, she entered her senior year having secured a full-time position with the company as a process engineer upon graduation.

We are proud that with your help, so many of our paper students receive the financial support they need to achieve their educational goals. The Pulp & Paper Foundation supports one of the largest endowments per capita on campus. This year, 58% of students in our program received scholarships.

In addition to traditional scholarships funded through donor support, the program’s BioResources Journal has made a commitment to reinvest in our students by using profits from the journal to fund scholarships. This year, we were excited to see an increase in the number of students supported by this unique model.

Our students recognize the investment the college has made in them, and they are choosing to give back almost immediately. Seventy-one percent of our Paper Science & Engineering Class of 2015 pledged to give back to the university within their first year after graduation. Seventy-five percent of those pledges are for $1,000 a year, putting these new graduates in the Chancellor’s Circle in their first year out of college.

We were also pleased to receive a generous gift-in-kind from Rockwell valued at nearly $25,000 to support the automation of new drives for our Wolfpack Baby paper machine. This gift ensures reliable operation of the machine during runs for undergraduates and research trials.

I am so proud of our Paper Science & Engineering students, alumni, faculty, staff, volunteers and donors. Thank you for your support of this prestigious program and for your role in keeping the program robust and relevant. We are strong today because of our dedicated alumni and donors and the life-long commitment you and so many of our supporters make to our program.

UPDATE ON THEPSE PROGRAMDR. MED BYRDWith enrollment now over 200 students (the highest in over 25 years), the PSE program is experiencing strong growth. This growth is due in large part to spreading the word that PSE is a premium “destination” for an engineering degree. Additionally, the Chemical Engineering program is enormously oversubscribed, and students not matriculating into Chem E are finding a nice home in paper science.

The new freshman class was incredibly gifted, with SAT scores and high school grade point averages above the average for all incoming engineering students. Almost 40% of the class had a TGPA of 4.0 after two semesters. They are also interested in and engaged in the industry. Almost one-third of the class obtained a summer internship after two semesters, and another third will be out this fall on co-op.

Industry recruiting was once again strong, with 23 companies coming on site for interviews. Summer internships were abundant, and there were more co-op positions offered than students able to accept them. Most graduating seniors received multiple job offers. The placement rate for the year was 100%. Of these graduates, 86% went into the paper and allied industries.

This year we also completed our biennial study abroad Paper International Experience. Twenty seven juniors and seniors went to Finland for 11 days in May. They toured manufacturing sites, research centers, and universities. Due the generosity of donors and companies, the students were once again able to have this incredible experience for only one-third of the cost.

The PSE program is experiencing a period of change and rejuvenation, with two new faculty hired and one position yet to fill. Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez, a PhD graduate from our program with five years in the tissue business, joined us early in 2015. He will be teaching the business processes course formerly taught by Dr. Richard Phillips. Dr. John Heitmann retired at the end of 2014, and Dr. Lokendra Pal, a paper/printing/coating expert with Hewlett-Packard, was hired to teach the senior paper machine course. A search is currently underway to fill the position of Dr. Orlando Rojas, who left our department to pursue opportunities at Aalto University in Finland.

This is a time of incredible opportunity for PSE. The continued strength and success of the Paper Science & Engineering program is due in large part to the sustained support, financial and otherwise, of our alumni, friends, and industry partners.

Thank you for all that you do for us!

This valuable experience enables the students to be more aware of international papermaking technology and culture. This trip’s main focus was analyzing the major challenges that Finland faces (in comparison to the United States) and acknowledging how they are using new and evolving technologies that are the future of the industry. The motto that encompassed the PIE experience was “using technology to stay competitive.”

First, the group visited the capital city of Helsinki in the southern region of Finland. They spent the first couple of days visiting and touring Aalto University’s Department of Forest Products Technology, Valmet’s pilot plant facility, and the VTT Technical Research Centre. Aalto has the leading European research unit in the field of forestry. The students were privileged to observe the phenomenal undergraduate and graduate research laboratories that set this university apart from the others. They were also able to interact with students, giving them insight to the Finnish education system and culture. During free time, the group rode a water ferry to Suomenlinna Fortress, took a day trip to Estonia, and explored the local night life.

Next, the group traveled to Jyvaskyla, in the center region of Finland. The students toured JAMK School of Applied Sciences, a prestigious international higher education institution in Finland where NC State students have completed study abroad experiences. Tours of the Institute of Bioeconomics, a Valmet Automation facility, and a second

VTT Technical Research Centre filled the days with copious amounts of learning and information. A traditional Finnish sauna boat ride around the lake and a smoke sauna and banquet at a local resort were amazing cultural experiences.

The last city on this study abroad experience was Tampere. During their time in Tampere, students visited UPM Raflatac, Valmet Fabrics facility, UPM Tervasaari and TAMK School of Applied Sciences. On the way back from Tampere to Helsinki, the group visited their last paper mill – SAPPI Kirkniemi. Each company that the group visited had assets, technology and sometimes specialty products that keeps them highly competitive in the global market.

The ability to see high-end, cutting-edge technology in action from multiple companies allowed the students to gain an experience of a lifetime and see the industry in many new ways. The students were also exposed to and immersed in a new culture where adaptation and flexibility were essential. From planning, to fundraising, to execution, the students were able to work together to make this study abroad a success from every aspect. The Paper International Experience is a beneficial and advantageous building block of the students’ educational career and allows them branch out, experience global industry and prepare for the future.

A TREMENDOUS thank you doesn’t seem quite enough for the alumni, friends, donors and companies that hosted us and contributed financially to our adventure, but THANK YOU!

Kelley (Mandracchia) Wilber (Class of 2003, PPT/CHE) and her husband, David (Class of 2001, Comm), have an eight-year track record of giving back to Paper Science and were recently named Chancellor’s Circle Chairs. Kelley reflects on her experience at NC State and why she thinks it is important to give back.

Why did you decide to attend NC State? “NC State was pretty much my first choice from the beginning. About halfway through my senior year of high school, I got a letter from the College of Natural Resources about programs and scholarship opportunities. I didn’t know much about the pulp and paper field, but it seemed interesting.”

What was it like when you found out you had received a Pulp and Paper Foundation Scholarship? “I was in the top 10 of my high school class in Charlotte. I didn’t have fantastic SAT scores, but I had worked, participated in sports — I was a well-rounded, good student. I tried for so many scholarships that I didn’t quite get. I was like a lot of kids who are right below that superstar level. My parents didn’t have a ton of money for my college education; I worked throughout high school and college. They made enough money, though, that we didn’t really qualify for financial aid. We were right in the middle. Getting the pulp and paper scholarship was great. I kept applying for opportunities and by my junior year at State, I was totally on scholarship.”

What was special about your experience at NC State? “The pulp and paper program — the professors and staff are just amazing. They really prepare you for a job, for the process of getting a job, and for a real-world career. It’s like a family. They do so much for you. The professors are serious about teaching and not just research. I’ve worked successfully in the paper industry for eight years. Now, I’m a sales engineer in the field of water/wastewater treatment, with a territory in the Carolinas. I’m traveling a little less since our son was born.”

What connects you to the area that you’ve chosen to support? What kind of difference do you hope to make? “A lot of students are probably like I was — in that group in the middle that can get overlooked. I want to help provide opportunities to other people like I had. I don’t give a huge amount of money, but it’s important to me to help keep this program strong at NC State and to help regular students. I’m able to give back because of what NC State did for me.”

What would you say to encourage alumni to invest in NC State?

“Think about what you got from your degree and the people who made a difference for you. You can help someone else have those opportunities at NC State.”

“I’m able to give back because of what NC State did for me.”

— Kelley Wilber

When Nelessa Lewis started her job as a process engineer at International Paper this past June, she picked up where she left off last summer — and the summer before that.

Lewis scored the first of two internships with the company in her sophomore year, during one of International Paper’s regular talent-scouting visits to NC State’s campus. She spent a total of six months at its mill in Riegelwood taking part in paper machine trials and wastewater treatment studies, and she entered her senior year with a full-time position secured.

Pulp and paper is big business in North Carolina, but it was new to Lewis, whose family is originally from Guyana and moved to Raleigh from Queens, New York, when she was 8.

Her plans to become a chemical engineer changed after she earned a scholarship that exposed her to the world of paper science.

“I was automatically hooked,“ Lewis said. “All of the classes are lab-based classes, so it’s all hands-on, you’re completely

involved in the entire process. Everything you see on your internship is what you saw in the classroom.”

Lewis narrowed her focus to paper alone and never looked back. She credits her experiences at NC State — her industry training, her interview coaching, even the engineering summer camps she attended while still in high school — with helping her down this path.

“I’m prepared. I know everything I need to know to start my engineering career. Here, it’s not just the thought, it’s not just the concept. It’s something that you actually go out and do.”

Lewis adds, “Without the potential of a scholarship, I might not have looked into the wonderful field of paper science and engineering. I am thankful for the faculty, staff, alumni and donors who support our program in a variety of ways.”

With her career off to a great start, Lewis is already committed to give back to paper science by joining the Committee of 100 and Chancellor’s Circle.
