    Firestop Putty

    Technical Data

Product DescriptionNelson Firestop Putty (FSP) is a completely pre-mixed and ready-to-use firestop product that can behand pressed into place forming an immediate fireseal. When exposed to fire the putty material forms ahard char that creates a formidable barrier to smokeand flame. FSP is a blend of organic and inorganicmaterials that is hand moldable. FSP is reusablewhen adding or changing penetrating items since thematerial remains pliable and does not set up.

    Appl ication

Nelson FSP requires no special skills or tools toinstall. To ensure adequate adhesion, all surfacesshould be clean and free of dust, grease, oil, loosematerials, rust or other substances. Apply the requireddepth of FSP over various backing materials asrequired. Ensure that the FSP makes completecontact with the inside surface of the opening and alsothe surface of each penetrating item. FSP is idealfor cable penetrations where cable additions arecommon due to the characteristic of FSP remainingpliable. It can also be used for metallic, non-metallicand insulated pipes, cable tray and ductworkapplications in a variety of fire rated floor or wallconstructions. Actual installation may vary accordingto the type of firestop application. Refer to availablefirestop systems.

    INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

GENERAL:Areas to be protected must be clean andfree of oil, loose dirt or rust. Installation temperaturesmust be between 40

    oF (4

    oC) and 110

    oF (43

    oC).

APPLICATION SYSTEM SELECTION:Selection of anappropriate firestop application system design is criticalto the fire protection process. Please consult theNelson Firestop directory and application guide as well

as the ULFire Resistance Directory for additionalinformation.

FORMING: Some installations may require forming aseither an integral part of the system or as an option tofacilitate installation. In systems where forming isrequired, mineral wool batt with a minimum nominaldensity of 4PCF is generally required. Cut formingmaterial oversized to allow for tight packing or use bulkfiber. Recess forming material to allow for properdepth of Putty.

FILL MATERIAL:Nelson Firestop FSPputty issuggested to be installed by hand. The putty shouldbe installed no thinner than . FSP is normallyinstalled from one side on floor penetrations and fromboth sides of a wall penetration. The putty should bepacked from the bottom of the opening, starting at theback and working forward. FSP should be pushed

into all voids. A minimum of of FSP shouldsurround each penetrating item (annular space). When this is not possible (such as a cable tray), acrown shall be built up around the bundle ofpenetrating items, using a second layer of putty. Thecrown should have a 30 slope with the wall or floorsurface. Wall openings should not have anunsupported space of putty greater than 4. Flooropenings should not have unsupported spaces of puttygreater than 1-1/2.

PUTTY PADS:Installation of FSP putty pads is determined byconstruction of wall F rating and size of electrical boxto be covered. Using gloves, remove pad from plasticfilm. Apply pad onto electrical box by forming overbackside of electrical box to completely cover exposedsurfaces. It is not necessary to cover the side of thebox against the stud to which it is mounted. Anadditional thickness of putty is to be formed aroundthe connector securing the end of each electricalmetallic tube or conduit to the box. Installation of puttypads will allow the horizontal separation between outlet

boxes, on opposite sides of the wall, to be less than24 provided that the boxes are not installed back-to-back.

METALLIC SLEEVE - Max. nominal 4" diameter min. 28 GA steel sleehaving a min. 2" lap. Sleeve installed by coiling the sheet steel to adiameter smaller than the opening and releasing the coil to let it uncoilagainst the periphery of the opening. Sleeve will extend a nominal 2"

NELSON FSP PUTTY - Apply over the forming material to a min. 1-1/2depth, flush with both ends of the sleeve.

sleeve to the full depth.FORMING MATERIAL - Tightly pack min. 4pcf mineral wool into the

designs. The max. diam. of the opening is 4". Annular space is 1/2" t

CABLES - Max. 40% fill of 100pr. #24awg., or smaller PVC jacketed

WALL ASSEM BLY - Construct as specified in the U300 or U400 series

    telecommunications cables.
