July 2013, Issue 77
Movie nights too popular! We’ve run two short film nights and both have been full. People love movies! We’ve found that short films are perfect for socializing and seeing a range of movies. Nelson Newcomers is looking for people who’d host a film night at their house in Tahuna, Stoke and Richmond – let’s keep it local! It’s DIY entertainment at little/no cost. Do you have a big TV screen or projector? That’s all you need! Contact Ali to talk more about it.
17 days of music, theatre, performance
and shows from $10 are about to hit
our town. Contact Ali
[email protected] if you’d like
to meet and go to the show with other
people. Any age, singles, couples,
older, younger, families – there’s a
range of entertainment throughout the
festival.
Some highlights: For snappy, creative,
educational enlightenment, try Pecha
Kucha; Nelson band who’ve made it big
on the dance scene, Minuit. Country,
folk, classical, theatre, film, talks..
New monthly drinks night at Bar Berlin – second
Wednesday of the month On the 12th of June a group of strangers gathered at Bar Berlin on Church St.
Clutching cocktails and munching tapas, they sat with folk they’d come with.
Marlo, Bar Berlin owner and Ali, Newcomers coordinator, welcomed us and
encouraged everyone to stand up and mingle. For the rest of the evening, folk
hung out at the bar, mixed and made new friends. By the end of the evening, a
lot of people had swapped phone numbers, and a few people went off together
to the Freehouse for folk night (a group of experienced musicians jam together,
playing Celtic folk every Wednesday evening). Everyone left saying ‘See you next
month!’ and thus a monthly drinks night is born.
Don’t wait till you have someone to go with – all Newcomers events are hosted
by someone from the team who will talk to you and introduce you to some
other new folk.
See you on Wed 10th July from 7pm. 8 Church St. 545 8957.

Successful Stories - John Have you noticed Nelson has quite a few international students? Some are here for a week, some for a year or
more. They come from all over the world to study here. John’s here for a year, so I asked him if he’d tell us a bit
about how he came to be here and what he thinks of Nelson. By the way, John’s name in Chinese is Hui, which
can mean the same as the Maori word, meeting! It also means ‘brilliant’..
My name is John (Hui ZHANG 张辉). I was born in Shanghai and spent 5 years studying and working in
the UK. He obtained degrees in both international business and law, and worked in non-governmental
agencies, law and business in England and China before coming to
Nelson.
Why Nelson of all places? Well, when I did a Google search for “1-
year accounting degree in NZ”, NMIT came out right at the top of the
search results. After further research on the city of Nelson, I found it’s
the sunniest city in NZ, so the decision to spend one year studying in
Nelson was confirmed.
When I arrived in Nelson I had a feeling of déjà vu, as the city I used to
study in the UK, Preston, the smallest city in the country, is quite
similar to Nelson.
Now I live in international student accommodation, where there can be
conversations in English, German, Japanese, Korean all at the same time in the sitting room. It’s really fun
to share a living place with people from all over the world. Also the landlords are great Kiwis, who are
always helpful and caring to everyone in the house.
I’m enjoying my accounting studies and the beautiful & peaceful life in Nelson. I’m now in love with the
city…….
John is keen to get involved in organizing events for international students and people aged 18-25 so
watch this space!
Cosy pubs are all around – no need to hibernate at home to stay warm! Here are some of my favourite cosy
places with fires and mulled wine to
relax with over winter.
In Nelson, try Café Affair at 295
Trafalgar St with couches by the fire
downstairs, more cosy couches
upstairs, and sells mulled wine as
well as really tasty snacks (ask for
cheese with their very yummy fries –
a Scottish taste sensation I’d like to
share with you!). The Freehouse on
Collingwood St is a converted church
with wooden décor, craft beers, a
real fire and mulled wine make for a
very friendly atmosphere. They
often have live music. Try the
Wednesday night folk nights or gigs
in their yurt (there’s one Fri 12th).
For an English-style country pub &
restaurant close to town, try the
Honest Lawyer on the beautiful
Monaco peninsula (a 35 minute bike
ride on bike tracks). They often
have live music.
A 35 minute drive brings you to the
Moutere Inn, Upper Moutere, built
in 1850. Friendly and welcoming,
with great food & of course a fire &
mulled wine too! They have too
many events to put in here –
monthly folk night, quiz night, gigs..The Yurt at the Freehouse
