Short-dated supermarket bread is being offered to families in need at the Victory Community Cen-tre, and its proving to be a very popular initiative.Rob Brown, programme and fa-cilities coordinator at the centre, says the bread, which is supplied by Fresh Choice Nelson, is being offered every weekday. It is col-lected by either himself or another staff member on their way to cen-tre each morning.

We get a range of bread including budget white or wholemeal loaves, as well as garlic bread, foccacia, soup rolls and speciality breads. We put it out front of the centre at around 8.30am weekdays, and by 9am it is usually all gone, he says. Families are allowed to take up to two loaves a day. It always goes quicker during the school term - people tend to pick up a loaf after they have dropped their kids at school, and we tend to get regulars coming every day, he says.

He says the local families are very appreciative. Ive had comments from a family who cant afford bread, saying that they really ap-preciate it this effectively is their food for the week, he says. Fami-lies are also able to use our kitchen and use our toaster, butter and spreads if they need to. The centre also gets fruit, vegeta-bles and assorted household items donated to them for distribution in the community from time to time, and Rob says they are always happy to distribute food.

Caller to NCC: Get rid of my neighbourJacob Chandler

Help me evict my neighbour, I dont like them.Thats one of the many weird requests put to Nelson City Council call centre staff over the past year. Each month, the council re-ceives an average of 4600 calls and 900 emails from local resi-dents. As expected there are plenty of building consent enquir-ies, questions about permits and people making noise com-plaints. Along with the usual requests come some very strange ones too. I had one lady wanting us to remove a dead mouse from her compost heap as the council should be responsible for mice, says a council call centre staff member.Others have included a lady wanting the council to clean her garden because it had been flooded and got a bit muddy, while one man phoned the council to find out if they had a register for dead cats found on the side of the road.

Sadly, this gentlemans cat was missing, says the staffer who took the call.Just last week, the council had a call from a man wanting to know why someone was dump-ing rubbish in his rubbish bin and one staffer had a call asking what the quickest way to get a divorce was.The councils communications manager Paul Shattock says the council also receive vari-ous emails meant for Nelson in Canada, a city home to around 10,000 people.

Some Nelson businesses are being recognised on a national level with awards and nomina-tions being taken out left, right and centre. TM Covers have taken out the two top awards at the Out-door Fabric Product Associa-tion awards ceremony in Mel-bourne. Managing director Christine Clark says she was pretty thrilled to receive both the top residential and commer-cial award. She will now have a chance to compete in the American awards, where she believes the company may have a good chance at taking out some more awards. A number of other local busi-nesses are up for awards as part of the New Zealand Top Shop awards.

Living light is one of seven Nelson retailers to have made it into the regional finals, along with KILT, Aboki, Silvermoon, Cruiseabout, Spark Richmond and Vodafone Motueka. I was absolutely delighted, I was blown away. You never quite know how its going to go when you enter these types

of awards, Living Light store manager Jude Biggs says. The rest of the team were over the moon. Cynthia Baur, our owner and director, was sim-ply delighted, she was really wrapped. Jude says initially there was a lot of paperwork to fill out about the team, the products and customer service. There is a panel of four judges who look at a secret shopper report as well as the informa-tion you have submitted and they make their decision from there. The awards will be held in Christchurch in early Septem-ber and Jude says she is feeling hopeful. We work really hard with customer service and product knowledge.

A group of local fishermen had to re-ally fight for their fish over the week-end as a porbeagle shark tried to steal their catch off the hook.Troy Dando was on board when a very cheeky shark had a crack at one of their fish they had on a line. It then bit the motor on the boat, then

worked its way alongside the boat, biting it as it went, he says.Porbeagle sharks are similar in ap-pearance to mako sharks and grow to around 2.5m long.

Its a good time to be selling a home, say the regions real es-tate agents, with houses being snapped up within days.Agents say the low number of homes on the marker is normal for this time of year but buyer demand hasnt dropped from the summer months and thats creating hot demand at open homes. One Nelson couple had only just finished unpacking their belongings in their new Atawhai home when an agent knocked on the door, saying he had a buyer for their home if they wanted to sell.Marc Evans says he only took possession of his home three weeks ago. We had just moved in and I was out in the garden getting it into shape, when I saw a cou-ple walk past with a real estate agent. They got in their car and the agent came over and said, that couple liked your house. Theyre from Auckland and are cash buyers. I said Im not looking to sell, were still un-packing.Mike Pero Real Estates Mitch-ell Wilson says just last week they had five offers on one

home.Stock levels are a lot lower than usual and thats just be-cause theyre going out faster than we can list them. There are still a lot of buyers out there, what we tend to find is that a lot of Nelsonians tend to wait until the spring, but right now theres less competition. There have been reports of agents knocking on doors, ask-ing people if theyd like to sell. One homeowner in Victory said she had four agents knock on her door within a fortnight.Mitchell says its normal for agents to drop flyers and knock on doors year round, but the lack of properties means there may be more than normal.Ben Nalder of Summit Real Estate says, as the number of properties for sale drops agents get more proactive in trying to get listings.

Were really tight on listings but have plenty of buyers and many of them are from out of town. Just recently Ive sold plenty of homes to Auckland investors. Anything well-pre-sented and well-priced is get-ting multiple offers.Last week, Mark Rumsey of First National told Nel-son Weekly that theyve seen huge growth over the past 12 months, with his firm selling three times as many homes in the past fortnight compared to what they did last year. What were seeing is unpresented demand, especially in the $280,000-$440,000 price range. Driving that is low interest rates and banks relaxing of the amount needed for a deposit, people are using their Kiwisav-er to get into their first home and saying Ive had enough of waiting, lets do it.

Police called to fight in library: Chil-dren in the Richmond Public Library ran for cover on Friday morning after a fight broke out between two men, smashing a computer and sending fur-niture flying. A man entered the library and started pushing and swearing at an-other man sitting at one of the comput-ers, according to young witness Camer-on Kennedy, aged eight, who was seated at the next computer. Acting senior sergeant Steffan James says the two men are known to each other and police, and would be inter-viewed about the incident.

Police catch armed driver near Maitai:Police stopped a four wheel drive vehicle on Mill St on Tuesday, after reports a gun was waved out the window as it drove along Nile and Tory Sts. Police in four cars at-tended the scene where three people, found in the vehicle with a BB gun, were questioned.

Nelson in top three for flag submis-sions: Statistics have been released by the NZ Flag Consideration Panel on the makeup of the flags submitted for review. Nelson has the third most sub-missions per population count with 113 flags submitted for consideration from a population of around 46,000.

Black was the most featured colour on flags submitted by Nelsonians. 22 fea-tured a fern, 38 the Southern Cross and five the Union Jack.

Councillors to discuss Trafalgar Cen-tre stability: Investigations into the sta-bility of the Trafalgar Centre, and the ground below it, will be presented to councillors at an extraordinary meeting on Thursday. Engineering firm ARUP was commis-sioned by Nelson City Council to carry out additional testing on the stability of the ground and the building, supple-menting initial research conducted by Tonkin & Taylor. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says she is looking forward to receiving the report and appreciates the effort that has gone into bringing a comprehensive proposi-tion together on what has been a chal-lenging engineering problem.

Memorial held for Alex Renton: A me-morial for Alex Renton was held on Sat-urday in the rose gardens at Broadgreen House. Rose Renton, Alexs mother, welcomed

everyone with a poem Alex had read at her wedding three days before he got sick. Speeches were then made by the family and Alexs friends. An Alexander rose was planted in the garden as a memorial to Alex and 19 green balloons were let into the sky.

New mural brightens up carpark:A new mural has been painted by Gold-en Bay artist Chris Finlayson in a car park on the corner of Selwyn Place and Hope St. The artwork, titled Doodle of Life, brightens up the side of the cor-rugated iron Daniel Allen Media build-ing adjacent to Staig and Smith. Chris has designed over 330 large scale art projects in the last 30 years, including Aotearoa on Wakefield Quay and Urban Jungle in 1908 Square.

Another local wins $50 for news tip:An excited Kath Inwood came into the Nelson Live office last week after finding out she had become one of our lucky winners. What do 86 households in Nelson all have a common? They all own a dog called Bella, which has come out as the most popular dog name in the current Nelson City Council dog register. Molly, Max, Poppy, and Ruby follow close beind, completing the top five line-up.Among the list of 5455 pooches, food names appear to be popular, with Mango, Toast, Muffin, Sushi, Peanut and Honey all making appearances. Some have chosen to name their dogs after cars, such as Mazda, Porche and Chevy, while flower names are also proving to be popular, with Poppy, Jasmine, Daisy, Marigold, Violet, and Rose all making the list. Interestingly, 1433 dogs in Nelson can claim to be one of a kind, and it is these canines that own title to some of the more unique names on the register. Moo Moo, Hiccup, Lucky Jelly, Mungbean and PuppyG are some of the more unusal names on the list, along with Yogi Bear, a 12 year old Huntaway owned by Katie Bennett-Coursey and her young family. Katie says when Yogi Bear was born he was the first to come out of a litter of 13, which not all survived. He came out with big fat paws next to

his face and was named Yogi Bear from the second he was born, she says. I always think of him as being more bear than dog.I wasnt supposed to be getting a dog, but after we had named him I couldnt let him go to anyone else. Katie says they have got some strange reactions to his name. When we first registered him, the lady at the council asked if we were absolutely sure thats what we really wanted to call him. Otherwise, people just presume he likes honey and picnic baskets.

Over in the Tasman District, Bella, Ruby, Jess, Jack, Max and Sam are the top names for the regions 10,300 dogs. Tasman District Council dog control administration officer Ross Connachie says not all owners give their dogs conventional names. A glance down the list of this years registrations suggests some of the owners have gone barking mad, giving their dogs names like Stinky the Stoat, Richie McPaw and Didymo. Dog registration officially closed on June 30.

One of Mapuas and Nelsons favourite cafes, Hamishs Ice-cream Parlour and Cafe, is clos-ing after its lease was terminat-ed, with owner Adele Calteaux saying they cant afford to move into new premises.Hamishs, which is named after Mapuas famous resident heron which visited the wharf each winter for more than 20 years, will be closing on July 24. Adele says she did not want to close after running the popular cafe for nine years, but insists she has no alternative.Adele says the Tasman District Council purchased the build-ing on the Mapua Wharf in December 2013 and now it is going to be leased entirely to another existing tenant, Gold-en Bear Brewing Company. Although council offered to relocate Hamishs to the new commercial premises being constructed on the former Ma-pua Aquarium site, Adele says they cant afford to move into the new building. We were going to move into the new building, but when we looked at the conditions of the lease we realised we couldnt afford it. It was going cost us $60,000 to $80,000 to refit the new build-ing - we are only a small busi-ness, we cant afford that.Adele says the new lease also required the tenant to open at

least six days a week in winter which is not practical. The lease also has some unfavour-able conditions relating to the on-selling of the lease, she says.If its a cold wet day in winter nobody comes into the cafe, so theres no point in paying staff to do nothing or getting food in you wont sell, so we dont open. If we moved into the new building wed have to open and wed lose money, she says.Adele says she is also disap-pointed at the handling of the process which she says was not transparent. She also says she cant understand why Gold-en Bear Brewing is staying in the building when she is being forced out. The council said they would look after us but I didnt realise, perhaps a bit na-ively, that moving would be at my expense. Im annoyed and

gutted that it has come to this.Council commercial manger Gene Cooper says they had to relocate Hamishs because of legacy issues with the lease that council could not un-wind. He says the council was not part of the problem and has subsequently tried wher-ever possible to help Adele keep Hamishs open. He says council purchased the building to get parties back together, but all they could achieve was to let Adele stay another five years or move when another building became available on Mapua Wharf. Gene says council went be-yond the call of a commercial landlord to provide Hamishs with a financial solution that included reduced rental to help them move into the new build-ing.

Bowen Eye Clinic provides excellence in laser eye surgery. For those with glasses or contact lenses, a chance to get rid of them would prob-ably be a welcome prospect and thanks to Dr Reece hall, its a possibility.Dr Hall has been travelling to Nelson for over three years now and is the only eye surgeon who makes the visit here to provide check-ups to his post-surgery patients and offers assessments for those interested in the op-eration. Last year Dr Hall established his own day surgery in a brand new, modern facility attached to Wellingtons Bowen Hospital. With increased demand for the services of Bowen Eye Clinic, Dr Hall is now making visits to Nelson every sec-ond Saturday, to offer people wearing glasses the chance to live without them.Bowen Eye Clinics satellite centre in Nelson is Harrington Eye Care, where locals seeking an answer to their sight problems can meet with Dr Hall for a free assessment. Potential pa-tients will need to undertake tests to determine whether the surgery will help their eyes.It doesnt matter if patients are in their 20s

and want to throw away their glasses, or are in their 50s and over and tired of carrying their specs around in case they need to read some-thing, the surgery can help those who are long or short sighted. However, it does work best for a particular group, which is what the tests can

identify. For people that want the surgery, all the assess-ments and post check-ups are done here in Nel-son with just one flight needed to Wellington for the surgery itself. The surgery is pain free and totally blade free as the Bowen Eye Clinic is equipped with the latest FDA approved lasers. During the operation, patients are given local

anesthetic so they are awake but feel nothing in their eyes. The next available clinics in Nelson will be Sat-urday 22 August and 5 September this year so contact Bowen Eye Clinic on 0800 69 20 20, or visit their website at www.boweneye.co.nz for more details. An updated website for the clinic will also be available on July 20.

Nelson kids are being spoilt for choice this winter break, as a number of events around the region kick off the second week of holiday fun.School holiday programmes in particular are proving popular, with enrolment numbers more than doubling in the past three years. Tom Dasler, supervisor at the YIKES holiday programme in Nelson, says that they have been busier than ever. When I first started working here three years ago we had around 20 kids, and now were pushing up to 50.YIKES run their holiday programme from three locations Nelson Central School, Auckland Point School, and Victory Primary School.Tania OMeagher, who is the coordinator for the YIKES holiday programmes, says she is really surprised at how much demand there is for holiday programmes in Nelson. When I was a parent I only used them here and there. Parents seem to be working longer hours now so were just as important as their school life now, and that surprises me, she says.Holiday programmes are now also being offered for preschoolers, with the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association offering care for three to five years olds at three of their kindys

in the region. And its not just holiday programmes that are helping to beat the winter blues, there are many free activities happening around the region.Thursday morning saw the opening of Dinosaur Footprints A Story of Discovery, a free exhibition which features three dinosaur footprints discovered in northwest Nelson. Kids can see real dinosaur bones, large scale dinosaur models and artworks.Parents Marcella Collins and Sarah McGregor, who were at the opening day

of the exhibition with their children, say they are finding lots to do with their kids these school holidays. There are lots of options, says Marcella. Weve just been to the movies, and were also going to check out the free stuff at Richmond Mall.Down at Founders Heritage Park, kids can get their Nautical know-how on and enjoy free, nautical-themed games and activities. There are also activities at the Elma Turner Library and Victory Community Centre.

School holidays serve up plenty of options

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT THE LAW GOVERNING THE SAFETY OF TREES NEAR POWER LINES Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003

Trees close to power lines are a safety hazard. On 1st July 2005 the Tree Regulations came into effect to protect the security of the supply of electricity and for the safety of the public. There is the potential for injury or even death by electrocution if you touch a tree which is touching a power line. Children in particular like to climb trees and when these trees are close to power lines, there is always the risk of serious injury or even death. Trees can cause power cuts especially in strong winds, rain and snow. Your power supply may be disrupted when trees fall or branches break, damaging power lines, poles or other structures. In dry conditions serious fires can be caused.

The Tree Regulations spell out the responsibilities for electricity lines companies and tree owners in making sure that trees are kept safely trimmed away from the lines. They define two zones around power lines as shown in the diagram below.

Growth Limit Zone no part of a tree or other vegetation should be inside this zone. Lines companies are required to issue Cut or Trim Notices to owners when their trees are within the Growth Limit Zone.

Notice Zone if your trees reach this zone you may receive a Hazard Notice warning that the trees must not enter the Growth Limit Zone.

Nelson Electricity carries out routine surveys on its network and issues Cut or Trim Notices to owners of trees that have grown into the Growth Limit Zone. If you receive a Tree Cut or Trim Notice it is important that you read the information sent to you and respond accordingly.

Tree owners are required to respond to Notices by either: Arranging for trees to be trimmed at their cost by a professional

lines-qualified arborist to a clearance outside the Notice Zone; or Informing the lines company that they have no interest in the trees. The lines company may then fell the trees (in some instances

    they may choose to trim).

If trees on your property have not previously been trimmed by the Nelson Electricity you may be eligible for the first trim free of charge. In exceptional circumstances, a dispensation from the regulatory clearances may be applied for.

If tree owners do not comply with the Regulations and fail to have their trees cut or trimmed they can be fined up to $10,000 along with $500 per day for ongoing offences. Tree owners may also be liable for the cost of outages and repair of power lines if damage has been caused by their trees.

Cutting or trimming trees near power lines is an extremely hazardous activity. If branches or people come into contact with a live line while the tree is being cut a potentially fatal electric shock may result. If live lines are brought down by cutting trees, then serious safety hazards to other people and property in the vicinity may occur. Trimming or felling trees in close proximity to power lines must only be carried out by professional arborists who have had specific training and are qualified to work near power lines.

Richmond Mall will introduce parking war-dens next month in an effort to stop people leaving their cars there all day.Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says a recent investigation found up to 40 per cent of the ve-hicles in the mall car park each day were there for the entire work day.She says those abusing the free parks were ei-ther retail workers in the mall, retail workers on Richmonds Queen Street or people parking their cars at the mall and catching the bus or carpooling to work in Nelson city. She says the high number of people parking there all day has forced the mall to introduce parking wardens, which will fine people $65 for going over the increased three hour time limit. The company employed is national car parking firm Wilsons.Belinda says there will be flexibility for shop-pers who need to use a park for longer, with an online system able to give them extra time. The enforcement programme will be intro-duced in two stages, the first on August 4 will simply mean a warning ticket for people park-ing over the two hour limit. From August 11 the full enforcement will begin. There are 770 car parks in the mall and 1300 public parks in the Richmond CBD, and Belin-da says the new enforcement could cause prob-lems for the towns residential carparks.

Nelsonians are being encouraged to say no to plastic in July, as part of a global campaign that aims to raise awareness of the amount of single-use plastic being consumed. Plastic Free July involves individuals, schools, businesses and community groups taking part in a top four challenge during the month, which involves avoiding plastic bags, water bottles, takeaway coffee cup lids, and straws. Nelson Environment Centres waste minimisation manager, Karen Driver, says the initiative is a good way of getting people to think about the amount of plastic they are consuming. Its all about raising awareness, she says. We promote reducing waste every day, and even if people refuse plastic bags, or takeaway coffee cup lids for just one day, its helping. Maybe it means theyll think about it next time they are ordering a takeaway coffee. Rylee Petterrson, who is the co-founder of Nelson eco company The Green Collective, says that single-use plastics are the most important thing to avoid, but it can be hard to do because they are

in our lives everywhere. People need to change their behaviour, and make what they see as inconvenient, convenient, she says. Its about thinking of where their plastic is going, and thinking about the end use.She recommends leaving reusable bags in the car so they are always on hand, investing in a reusable takeaway coffee cup and drink bottle, and most importantly, just saying no when

offered plastic. Rylee and her business partner Emma Saunders have created their own reusable produce bags, called Goodie Bags, which they sell at the Nelson Market on Saturdays.Emma says that Plastic Free July is a good way of making people more aware of how much plastic they are using, and hopes that the initiative helps to change some habits of consumers in Nelson.

Its been 70 years since the end of World War 2, and the historic moment will be commemorated in Nelson next month with a community event on VJ Day.The day will be hosted at Rutherford Park, next to the Trafalgar Centre, and will include displays of WW2-era vehicles, music from local groups and historical information. Nelson veterans of the pacific conflict will be there as well.VJ Day or Victory over Japan is August 15 and commemorates when Japan

surrendered to the United States, effectively ending WW2. The official surrender was signed two and a half weeks later on September 2, 1945.Organiser Kerry Neal says it isnt the first time Nelson has commemorated the day, there was a parade down Trafalgar St in 1995. That was a great day, people just turned up and took part, it was a great occasion.

Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says it is nice for the focus to be on WW2 after all the Gallipoli Anzac c o m m e m o r a t i o n s earlier this year. We still have around 80 members here in Nelson who served in WW2 and most of them were in the Pacific, in the

Navy, Airforce and the Army, so its great to recognise that.Kerry says victory over Japan was a big deal

for New Zealand, as Japanese submarines and planes were recorded in the country. There were submarines in Cook Strait and all around our coast. A Japanese plane also flew over the North Island, it was a very real threat.During the war there were anti-aircraft guns and barbed wire installed at Tahuna Beach, coastal defence guns were installed at Whitby Rd and air raid shelters were built at Nelson Hospital, Nelson College, and Hampden St School. The free informal commemoration will be on Saturday, August 15, from around 10am.

I like that design. Having lived overseas for a number of years, it

is clear that our flag is not recognised as NZ. We found that everyone thought it was Australian flag. We need something NZ unique. Diane Chandler.

    Health needs that money more????

    Wendy Thomas.

What about respect to our elders who lost their dedicated lives for

our national flag and country. Money should be put towards feeding our NZ kids. Tots against! Mandy Thomas.

Seal seen at Tahuna's back beach: He's frolicking along Rocks Rd at the moment. Michael Ogden.

I saw a seal within feet of the sea wall along rocks road, one day

this week. I didn't stop for a photo, be-cause other cars trying to do so were a hazard. Jamie Hall.

Is this the one which normally sun bathes on the sea wall of the

cut. Could be he's got some mates. Dennis Gibbs.

Why isn't success trickling down?Last November, retail spending was up 8.1 per cent from the pre-

vious year, the Economic Development Agency for Nelson says "Nelson is the best preforming economy in NZ at the moment" Who feels these benefits are trickling down to the people of Nelson. Pay rises in the retail sector? New jobs in industry? Anyone getting appren-ticeships? Why is the foodbank in so

much demand? Why do we need Food for Families, the Koha Shed, Salvation Army stores, if we are all doing so well?Graeme O'Brien.

Have you had a real estate agent ask if you'd like to sell your house?

Several. And always while I'm cooking dinner. And I'm rent-

ing, so knocking on my door is a com-plete waste of time. Nikole Berkett.

Yes, in Stoke plus lots of flyers. CheyRose Evans.

Smoke in Tahuna:At a time of year when families are go-ing cold, and paying massive power bills because the council said 'no' to new fires to help pollution... how is this scene in Stoke [from the industrial businesses in Tahuna] acceptable? Tina Guy.

    THE WAKATU DANCE THEATRE PRESENTS

Earlier this year, and just a 150 kilometres east of ISIS-held land in northern Iraq, Nelsons Pauline and Bruce Coffey were handing out gumboots, blankets and food, completely unfazed about close proximity of the worlds most feared terrorist organisation. After all, it was hardly their first time in an unsecure foreign land.Bruce and Pauline have spent most of the past 15 years working in war zones, drought-stricken land and cities cleaning up from major earthquakes. Earlier this year, they were in northern Iraq working with a British charity and helping to look after hun-dreds of families with food, healthcare and housing.Bruce says it is a hard, but re-warding, job and their latest trip to Iraq was their last. Its time to stop running around, we have children and grandchildren here in Nelson who we want to spend time with.Pauline is a registered nurse and Bruce has a background as a school teacher, Navy officer and prison officer, before they both joined the Salvation Army in the early 2000s.

They started working with a Sal-vation Army drug and alcohol programme in Auckland, before heading to Fiji to run social ser-vices. It was while in the Pacific that Bruce was offered a role in Iraq in 2003, shortly after the American invasion. They had just been liberated and they were desperate for help and happy to see Sadam gone. So they were very happy to have us there. From there, Bruce and Pauline left the Salvation Army and went to drought-plagued Somaliland with another charity. We were there for a year, it rained three times in that year and the longest time was 20 minutes, it was just huge draught problems. While in Somaliland they had armed guards with them every minute of every day, but it didnt stop Bruce receiving his first death threat. It was from a guy who we didnt give a job to, but he sent me a text message saying the time of your execution is rap-idly approaching. But he used the

same phone number that was on his application so the authorities knew who he was and he had to go into hiding. It wasnt the only time Bruce says he was put in danger. In 2003, while living in a southern Iraq city, two factions had a gun fight outside their home. There were four of us ex-pats who just hun-kered down in the house, behind walls and just hoped that it would go past.

Bruce and Pauline also spent time in Haitai and Christchurch after the respective earthquakes, and in Nauru, the boat-people camp run by the Australian gov-ernment.Pauline says there was plenty of heart-break, but plenty of re-wards as well. The reward is see-ing the smiles on these kids faces when they get a new set of cloth-ing. One time they were giving out gumboots and this little girl

was looking down at her gum-boots and she was just as pleased as punch. Thats really nice to see that. Bruce says you have to be realistic about what you can and cant do. Youre not going there to change the world because there is so much more need than you can ever address. If you ever wor-ry about how much you cant do, youre going to do your head in. I was doing a food delivery with 12 trucks loaded to the hilt in Af-rica and this little old lady who was stick-thin asked for some food, and I had to turn her away. We were feeding children and if I gave it to her, the world food pro-gramme that we had the contract with would have had something to say, he says. We did manage to spill a bit for her though, but it was degrading watching her fighting the goats off for the food that was on the ground. The Coffeys are now settling back into their Stoke home and pre-paring for plenty of family time after a hectic decade and a half. Were Christians and we believe thats what weve been called to do, and its been nice to be able to help people, says Bruce.

When one door closes another door opens. Its a well used saying and almost al-ways true, especially for Stoke Methodist Church. Around two and a half years ago, after the Christchurch earthquake, all of the building codes were reassessed. Stoke Method-ist Churchs buildings received an engineering report and all failed to pass the new seismic standards, even though theyre basically as strong as the day they were put here fifty years ago, says congregation member Keith Drogemuller. The land the church sat on was 5000 square metres and ac-

commodated the parsonage, the church, five flats and a com-plex of a hall, kitchen, lounge and three Sunday school class-rooms. Forced out of their church, the congregation decided to convert the Sunday school rooms into a new Church and used their assets to fund the project. This has included sub-dividing the church land into four parts, then selling the old church and the parsonage. Eighteen months later and the church is proud to welcome the congregation and commu-nity back into a new and improved facility. Apart from being well up to near the new earthquake standards, the building

also provides people with a much warmer environment thanks to heat pumps and insulation, is a better size for the congre-gation and is more suited to its modern day requirements. Throughout the whole conversion of their new church, members have seen the im-portance of incorporating the older ele-ments of their previous house of worship, the most impressive of these being the stained glass window. Previously an east-facing window, it now faces north and, as well as making full use of the sunlight, is the perfect backdrop for Rev. Martin Oh to conduct Sunday services. This mix-ture of old and new also includes a hand-ful of the pews and a miniature replica of the previous church's pulpit, constructed

out of the original wood. Although their congregation totals an average attendance of around 40 people, Stoke Methodist Church is a key asset for the Stoke community and is often used by groups for activi-ties or meetings. While the community usage has had to be

halted during construction, the church says August 1 will of-ficially see their doors open to them and others who want to make use of their facility.
