Since the industrial revolution in the 1800’s the humanenergy consumption has increased. With every householdobtaining heating, cars, and electricity, as well as societytravelling faster and further than ever before, the need forenergy is enormous.Currently 80 percent of our energy needs comes fromfossil fuels. Due to the consumption of all these fuels theamount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higherthan ever, moreover according to the International EnergyInstitute this amount could double by the year 2020. Risingoil prices and increasing environmental requirementsresult in higher risks and uncertainty for conventional dieseloperated ships. We need to generate and consume ourenergy more effi ciently and more sustainable. AlewijnseMarine Systems contributes by developing new technologiesto cutback on power consumption and emissions.One of these developments is the application of hydrogenas clean fuel for ships.• Completely clean and odourless emissions• Zero emissions at the same operational cost level• More autonomy than a battery powered ship• Operates noiselessly and free of vibrations• 40% more energy effi cient than diesel power• Lighter than a comparable diesel system• Insensitive to oil price developments• Ready for future emissions requirements
