n this months edition of ourewsletter we have decided toavel back thirty six years to 1977hen our minor hurlers capturedoth divisional and countyonours. This was our ninth northtle but only the second time inur history that we managed toin the county.he North final was played onome turf in MacDonagh Park ande defeated Silvermines on a score

ne of 4-09 to 2-05. Paradingeir skills with purpose andrilliance in a nine minute spell ine second half Nenagh scoredree second half goals that killed

ff the challenge from their rivals.ire g achieved their success onerit, with greater fitness, superb

etermination and some reallygnificant individual contribution, cloaking themselves in a mantlef glory they inflicted nine minutesf torment on the Mines, huntingelentlessly to preserve theirnbeaten record, they dictatedvery facet of play and clinchedeir first title in eight years. The

tmosphere on the night wasxception with rival young

supporters roaring themselveshoarse and there was scenes ofgreat excitement and back-slapping as Michael Kennedy wentforward to receive the DeanHamilton Cup. There was a touchof originality about the setting asenthusiastic supporters borrowedthat part of the scoreboard readingire g to form the background forthe presentation.ire g opened the scoring when

Sean Minogue found the gap andclipped the ball to the Mines net. Both sides exchanged scores andat half time only the minimumseparated them as Nenagh led 1-03 to 1-02.

In a nine minute spell in thesecond half the ire g scoringmachine erupted. Denis Griffingrabbed the first of three goals,Sen Minogue took the secondafter a fine combined movementand Michael Griffin was on hand tobang home the third after GerryBarrett had saved well in the

Mines goal. Brian Heffernan wasthe outstanding performer on theire g team with a display ofpower hurling for the full sixty

minutes. Sen Minogue wasanother to leave his mark on thegame, while Roger Coffey andEugene Hackett stormed intoaction in the second half. Thesegot most assistance from DenisFinnerty, Conor Ryan, PhilipKennedy, Michael Griffin andMichael Kennedy.

was then onto the county finalhere they faced the holdersoughmore Castleiney. In 1968hen Nenagh previously won thistle they also faced the holders,at time it was Moycarkey Borris.

or three quarters of this gameenagh looked like losing but it

as their refusal to accept defeatat saw them through sheerersistence and smartness loftover the scores that mattered anddged them home by just a pointn a score line of 2-05 to 0-10.

What a thrilling climax this was toe minor campaign. Two fineams, expertly trained and

oached, threw everything into itnd provided spectators with aneal pipe opener to the countysg hurling day. It was the halfack line that led the team toctory getting on top of theirpponents, who were expertlyded by midfielder Pat McGrath.

It was typical of this sectorsperformance that centre back

Eugene Hackett should have beenthe one to send over the equalisingpoint six minutes from the end, apoint that was added to threeminutes later by Brian Heffernan,

from a free, the winning point.ire g started brightly with twogoals in the 7thand 10thminuteswhen Michael Griffin, with a ratherlazy shot and Gerard Grace with

a fine ground shot both goaled.Loughmore came storming into thegame and led at the interval 2-00to 0-07. Nenagh started thesecond half in determined fashionbut it appeared not to be our daywhen Michael Griffin had a goalbound free saved and SeanMinogues palmed effort reboundedfrom the crossbar.

ire g kept up the pressure andBrian Heffernan pointed a semipenalty. With the game entering

its final tenminutes, ire gwell realised thatthey would haveto throweverything into it ifthey were todethrone thechampions.

Roger Coffeycoolly sent over apoint and BrianHeffernan pointeda 70. Two furtherpoints were added

by Hackett andHeffernan and ireg led by theminimum when

Jimmy Collinsended a thrillinggame and ire gcaptain MichaelKennedy went tothe stand toreceive the trophyfrom County Board

    Chairman, MrHubie Hogan.

Overall balance is the hallmark ofthis ire g side. They have no onewho could be said to be one onwhom most depends and it wastruly a team effort that broughtthem their second title.

made the decision tosubstitute Paul on fortyminutes. Lillis having given allhe had could only watch asSouthern Gaels ran outwinners on a scoreline of 1-13to 1-07.

This defeat was particularlyhard on Paul as he missed outon the Junior C championship(2010) and Junior B leaguetitle (2011) with Nenagh aftersuffering an ankle injury.Paul vows to be back andhopes to capture that elusiveJunior title in 2014. migration it seems is the curse ofe Irish nation. Throughoutstory there are countlessxamples of the Irish, throughoverty, unemployment and manyther reasons being forced to packeir belongings and head forreign shores. Emigration has

ontinued to be a common socialeme in Ireland sincedependence and apart from arief respite during the Celtic

ger years it continues toaunt families andommunities today.

enagh ire g has alsouffered as a result of theecession and in recent yearse have lost stalwarts such asark Langton (New York) andaul Burke (London), amongthers. Although the clubasnt been decimated likeome other GAA clubs, thisear, adult hurlers Pearce Orien, Cliff Moloney, Brianaxwell and Willie Bolger havel decided to seek theirrtune in The Land Downnder.

illie Bolger won the doubleorth Tipperary Junior Aurling league andhampionship in 2012 and wasoping to force his way into

e senior set up this yearowever the scourge ofnemployment forced him intohanging direction in his life. The fact that I was out ofork for quite a while was theain reason why I choose to

migrate. I knew there was moneyo be made in Australia and I hadany friends over there also. I wasck of the rain in Ireland as welle joked.

Two of the hardest things to leaveehind were my family and theurling club. Ive hurled with Eireg since the age of eight so it wasrange that I knew I wouldnt be aenagh player for the rest of theear. I still miss the hurling craic

like mad. And slagging ChristeoirMcLoughlin of course.Being abroad is different andtough at times. When the lads areplaying I just want to be theretogged out for every game but Iknow I cant. I still text all the ladsbefore each game wishing themthe best of luck and I tune into thelive feed on Twitter for the scores.Living on the other side of the

planet without the support of yourfamily is very tough but theNenagh diaspora do act as awonderful little community abroad

supporting and helping each other. Its actually like a mini Nenaghout here. My boss of DanmarHomes, Danny White is originally aNenagh man which is probablypartly the reason we got work with

him. There are roughly ten of usfrom home working with thecompany, Cliff Moloney, Paul OGorman, Brian Armitage, MattCooney, Davy Ryan,Andy Chadwick, Danny White, AlanKelly and Pearse O Brien whoworks with a different company.Brian Maxwell has recently arrivedto Perth as well. It helps a lotbeing around them.

Being a passionatefollower of a club isparticularly hard forthose abroad whenthey reach a majorfinal. While Williewas thousands ofmiles away theresno doubt his heartwas in SempleStadium whenNoel Maloney led themen on blue ontoTom Semples fieldon county final day.

I was absolutelydelighted for thelads when theyreached the countyfinal. I know thededication neededand the training thelads do fromFebruary and its noteasy so they

definitely deserve tobe there, not tomention knockingout some of thegiants of Tipperaryhurling along theway.

From a personal perspective attimes I was actually gutted that Iwasnt there and thought this istypical, the one year I go they get

to the final. But I got on with itand focused on work to take mymind off of it. Im sure I will havemany more big days like it in aNenagh jersey. The day of thecounty final here was strange. Iknew it was such a huge game and

esting in Rohans again beforeng.fe abroad for the Irish is madeasier with the presence of GAA

ubs throughout the world. Theyrovide the Irish with anpportunity to mingle with othersthe same boat (pardon the

un!!) and to continue to play theames they love. The GAA abroada vital lifeline for many

emigrants and hashelped the Irish to

settle into theirnew surroundings.I play with PerthSarsfields andreally enjoy it.There are a goodfew Tipp lads onthe panel that Iknow also. We gotbet this year inthe championshipsemi-final. Hurlinghere helps inmany ways, making friends, getting work andnot losing yourcompetitive edgeare just threeways. Its grandto be hurling sofar away fromhome. Id be lost

    without a fewpucksagainst a

    wall.

Thestandard is actually unreal. There are a lot of formerinter county hurlers andregular senior club hurlersout here. I couldnt believe

how tough it was and howgood the hurling was whenI first came. I realisedfairly quick I wasnt justgoing to walk into a team.Well Willie worked veryhard at his hurling and wasfortunate enough to makethe Western Australia stateteam. Hurling withWestern Australia was upthere with one of greatest

hurling memories Ive had. There are five clubs inWestern Australia and inOctober of every year theypick the strongest panel of25 players to hurl for thestate. Being honest I was

lucky enough to get called as theywere stuck for a goalie but I ended

up impressing out the field andactually played the tournament asa wing forward. We beat Victoria inthe final easy enough and Inotched up around 1-4 for thetournament. Not boasting oranything ha.

The original plan was to do outmy one year visa and go home butwith a fulltime job, hurling and a

good social life Im struggling tofind a reason to go home after oneyear. We will see what happensand who knows if I save enoughmoney I might go home atChristmas for a holiday for a fewweeks. All of us here in Nenagh ire gwish Willie and all our friends andsupporters the very best and wecant wait until you return back to

Prior to the CountyFinal, Brian Hudnerwrote of hismemories of 95 and

    the pride that all the

    men that wore blue

    feel for their club.

was living 6,000 miles from homehen ire g, Nenagh won theirolitary senior hurling title aeneration ago. It was morning myme when I heard the news ofctory down a long-distance phonene. The connection was poor; ouroices echoed more than thelwee Cave, and we spent most ofe time talking across each other

ke Brolly and Spillane.onetheless, I got the jist of it ine end. It had been a "btharda" to get over "Bthar Leathan",ut in 1995, Conor O' Donovanised Dan Breen and dedicated it

o all those who ever wore theue. The Mammy sent out Theuardiana week later and Ihaled it with the ink-stainedngers of the exile.hat I didn't know then was that itas also Monday morning his timehen my father walked home from

ohn Ryan's in Summerhill, a half-allon of porter his only source ofustenance. To this day, he claimsis the fastest time he has ever

ken to cover the couple of milesome. If I'm being honest, I'veways been dubious about hisme-tracking on that night. Afterl, he left the pub as full as a Birono, as full as Mikey Heffernan'sedal drawer - and fairly skatedome, songs still ringing in hisars. Whether or which, it was aght of nights in Nenagh town,nd I missed it.need hardly add that Nenagh

ave threatened Dan Breen twicence then and run into a certaineighbouring parish on bothccasions. This year, happy toeport, the townies have no, ahem, oomstone around their necks toull them towards perdition. Now,

as in 1995, we are set up for a tiltat a Mid side, though not one ofthe Mid sides more favoured at theoutset of the season. Indeed, theresurgence of the Mid division -and a countervailing fall in theNorth - has been much heralded inthe last few years. We need noreminders that since ire g won,no other North side apart fromToomevara has won the Countychampionship (and their incrediblehaul of eight over eleven years is aspur to action on Sunday like noother.)One measure of the gap to the lastwin lies of course in the fact thatthe current team features sons ofthose who played in the last victoryor featured in the final earlier inthe 90s. Noel Coffey lined out atcorner-back in 1995 and his sonAndrew wore 13 against Kildanganin the semi-final replay. Billy of the

Heffernan clan is a backman likehis dad (though John had a sojournon the edge of the other square in1995 of course.) No surprise to seeHowards, Quinns, and Flannerysfollowing fathers and brotherseither. And there are otherconnections in the latticework: theentire side is spliced with familiarsurnames, some in their thirdgeneration of service. One such name of note is that of

Kevin Tucker who will man hisstation in the centre of the TomSemple's field on Sunday. It ishard to believe it is 20 years sincehe won the North Tipperary Playerof the Year, or that is so long sincehe gave a certain famousbainisteoirthe run-around in theMunster Final of 1997. He is, so tospeak, the son of his earlier self!He was by common accord one ofthe best men on the park against

Kildangan the last day and will bekey to unlocking Loughmore, aclub chasing their third countytitle.Loughmore-Castleiney have ofnecessity also made a virtue offamily tradition. And while they

might have a smaller pick, what apick it is! The cousins McGrathmatch our Heffernans, and willtake the same watching. Each ofthem is a gamechanger in his ownway, but the men running theNaynagh'line have given everyindication so far that they have ashield for every arrow, and acouple of spares in their ownquiver. While this Nenagh team isshort of county medals - KevinTucker aside - it is dotted with ladswho have won All-Ireland titleswith Tipperary at senior andunderage, and who have countytitles all through the juvenile andU-21 grades. Added to a scatteringof lads who won a recent All-Ireland colleges title with NenaghCBS as well, it gives Nenagh agreat chance on Sunday.I predict a tight game with Nenaghprevailing through goals scored.

But the margin of victory might beas skinny as one of Paddy Rohan'sties. As something of a postscript to thispiece, there are many of us who"wore the blue" (without anydistinction in my case) that will bethere on Sunday. It is gratifying tosee Nenagh in a final again after aseven year gap. I grew up aBrendan Cummins puckout awayfrom "the hurling field" and made

up the numbers as a young fella. Many's the evening that DinnyMcSweeny or Sen Foley came toround up a few of us to head off toDolla or Cloughjordan, though ithas to be said that some of uswere, as the fella says, noaddition. But no matter. We stillcast a shadow on a hurling pitchsometime.Anyhow, if Nenagh win, myself andthe oul' fella will doubtless be

looking at our watchfacessometime on Monday morning aswe point the shoeleather for home. This time, there will be no longdistance.
