Gov. Abubakar moves to diversify

exports

NEPC at RMRDC Business Roundtable

NEPC at 2016 World Entrepreneurs’ Day

The Council has reiterated the need for all

stakeholders in the non-oil

export sector to synergize for diversification of the

country’s revenue base.

This was the consensus

among stakeholders at a Business Roundtable on

selected viable agro and

mineral base investments

projects in Kaduna state.

The event was organized

by Raw Material Research

and Development Council

(RMRDC) in collaboration with Kaduna Chambers of

Commerce, Industry, Mines

and Agriculture

(KADCCIMA). Executive Governor of

Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai represented by the

Commissioner of

Agriculture and Forestry, Dr.

Manzo Daniel Maigiri commended RMRDC for

the initiative which he

noted came at time when

the country was in dire

need of alternative sources

for budgeting finance.

El-Rufai said his

administration was poised to diversify the economy of

the state through

agriculture and organo-mineral to boost its revenue

base.

Speaking at the occasion,

the Director General RMRDC informed

participants that the

RMRDC has developed

technology for processing

of six-products in the state

which include among

others potatoes, hydrated limes, animal feeds,

organo-mineral fertilizer

and gemstone cutting and

polishing. The ED/CEO of NEPC, Mr.

Olusegun Awolowo

represented by the Deputy

Director, National Export Office, Mrs. Vero Oriere said

efforts should be geared

towards building capacity for SMEs particularly in the

area of quality,

standardization and

packaging.

Nigerian Export Promotion

Council (NEPC) was among

delegates, Ministries,

Departments and Agencies

(MDAs) of government at

the 2016 World

Entrepreneurs Day.

The Regional Coordinator,

North West, Abdulahi

Mamman who represented

the ED/CEO of NEPC, Mr.

Olusegun Awolowo at the

event in Kaduna, pointed

out that the major

objective of the activity

was to create awareness

on innovation, leadership

and entrepreneurship

worldwide. He noted that

classification of

entrepreneurs into Micro,

Small and Medium (MSMEs)

and large scale Enterprises

as well as identification of

MSMEs as an engine of

economic growth and

employment generation.

Some of the Council’s

programmes targeted at

building capacity for SMEs

to include among others:

•Export Skills Acquisition

Programme (ESAP)

•Specialized Seminars and

Workshops

•Market sourcing and

participation at

International Trade Fairs

among others

Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State has endorsed

the ‘Zero Oil’ Plan initiative

as one of the best steps to

take in the country’s pursuit to diversify Nigeria’s

economy away from the

monolithic product of oil.

He made the

declaration while receiving

the Executive Director/CEO

of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC)

Mr Olusegun Awolowo and

his Management at his

office in Minna recently. According to the

Governor, “His State and

probably other Nigerians

have always known the right path to take in

changing the economic narrative of the country but

lacked the courage to take

the bull by horn. With this

economic downturn, necessitated by continuous

slide in price of oil, we have

no option than to turn to

agriculture and exportation. Niger State is

blessed with several of

these key products

including rice, soya bean, cotton and gold among

others.

As an immediate

demonstration of support for the Initiative Governor

Abubakar constituted a

high powered 7-man

Committee made up of

Director Generals of

relevant Ministries in the

State, under the leadership

of the Commissioner of Industry & Commerce to

strategize, identify at least

three products for

exportation and synergize with NEPC for that purpose.

He charged them to turn-in

their report within a month.

The CEO of NEPC Mr Awolowo, while presenting

the ‘Zero Oil’ plan to the

Governor emphasized the

use of exports for job creation, and increase in

government revenue which

he underscored by saying

that “Nigeria needs to deepen her footprints on

manufacturing for export

and scale-up production of

items where Nigeria has

comparative and

competitive advantage in

the global market”.

“…sets-up

Committee to

work with NEPC.”
