Local AttractionsMansion ToursNewport is famous for its mansions, built as summer homesin the 1850s to 1900 by wealthy tycoons of New York andPhiladelphia. These massive houses, including thespectacular Rosecliff, Marble House, the Breakers, the Elms,Rough Point, are open to the public, offering fascinating andinformative tours. The Breakers is probably the first amongequals of Newport mansions. Cornelius Vanderbilt II directedarchitect Richard Morris Hunt in 1893 to design the Breakers,an Italian Renaissance-style palazzo.

Vineyard VisitsThe northern part of Aquidneck Island, where Newportresides, has three fabulous vineyards that are open for tours, tastings, and events like clambakes or art shows. You willneed a car or a ride to get to the vineyards from Newport, but they are not far at all.

Walks and HikesThe Cliff Walk is a memorable walk with outstanding vistas. Itis a 3.5-mile elevated and paved path along the shoreline, passing grand mansion properties, with vast views of theAtlantic. Several entry points allow you to do only a portion ifyou wish. And, by all means, just walk around the town! Inthe old downtown, narrow streets are lined with should-to-shoulder clapboarded houses, many bearing plaques withthe date of construction – some from the 1700s -- and theowner's name.
