You are holding the booklet of NERVION Hyperbody Project. We have done a lot of research and produced many iterations before the final design, we decided to bring it all together in the form of this booklet. For this booklet, we carefully selected limited material in hopes that we can make you experience our development process.

We gave our very best to this project, so we hope you will enjoy the contents of this booklet.Thank you.

The human interaction is becoming a more important task of the architecture of today. The Metabody experiment ‘NERVION’ finds its inspiration from the

human anatomy. The inherence and collaboration of components is at its most efficient. The ultimate relation between the brain, the neural network, the electrical data conversion, the muscle layout and the bone structure in the human body is translated in a digital structure. This experiment is

the creation of a digitally driven body with its own emotions and movements. The visual perception of NERVION’s expression is made

possible by a division between the analogue and digital forces. The interaction with the human is an overwriting analogue force, while the movement of NERVION is digitally generated.

Human AnatomyThe relation between the brain, neural system, electrical data conversion, muscles and the bone structure is the main inspiration in the NERVION project. The translation is made from the actual muscles system to a digital muscles system to achieve the curling motion in the muscles structure.

ANATOMY OF NERVIONBRAIN:// “The part of the central nervous system serving to control and coordinate the mental and physical actions.”The brain is the receiver and sender of digital information through the neural network. According to the impulses and reflexes, the NERVION will make the movement accordingly. As the human body, the system can have an error, which can result in a glitches or sudden movements.

ANATOMY OF NERVIONMUSCLES:// “a tissue composed of cells or fibers, the contraction of which produces movement in the body.”The muscles are the converters from data to form. It is both physically and digitally connected to the brain: movement according to digital data.

ANATOMY OF NERVIONTHE NEURAL NETWORK:// “a bundle of fibers in the body that transmits impulses of sensation and motion between the brain and the body.”The nerves are the data messengers. The network of fibers are connected from the outer layer (the skin), through the muscles and the brain. It transmits the digital data to the muscles to make the motion possible.

ANATOMY OF NERVIONBONES:// “pieces of hard whitish tissue making up the skeleton in humans and other vertebrates.”The Main LOOP are the bones in the design, which in itself is an autonomous structure. It collaborates with the brain structure and everything under its hierarchy to facilitate interactivity of the design as a whole.

ANATOMY OF NERVIONTHE MOTION SKIN:// “the membranous tissue forming the external covering or integument.”The motion skin is the membrane of NERVION, consisting of tissues collaborating together to empower the appearance of the motion of muscles. The tissues are arranged in a pattern, which is designed to make an efficient collaboration possible. This collaboration will perform in an elegant and fluent motion.

INTERACTIVITY WITH NERVIONBehavior & Mechanics Relation_NEUTRAL STATEThe HYPERLOOP has its own behavior and motion, which will be implemented in the NERVION since it function as the bone structure. The muscles are attached to the bone structure (Hyperloop) via strings which makes the motion visible.

INTERACTIVITY WITH NERVIONBehavior & Mechanics Relation_KING OF THE CASTLEThe brain, overwriting data center, is the dominating space of NERVION. The person getting inside the brain has the ability to let the NERVION move according to the hand gestures. The distance between the two hands are calculated by the KINECT, this data is translated in the frequency of the movements of NERVION. The person becomes the ‘King of the Castle‘ and is able to ‘tease‘ the crowd.

MUSCLE ARM STRUCTUREMechanicsThe muscle arm structure is flexible and able to move and curl up. The multiplication of these arms makes it possible to have a ring of movement through the HYPERLOOP. The structure has a rotating arm mechanism which makes the motion possible.

Spatial QualityThe spatial qualities of the Muscle Arm Structure is relatively high, due to the differences in the zones. Difference in privacy in the three levels: The outer ring is public, the inner ring is semi public and the in-between space is intimate. The porosity between the material is achieved my the motion of the muscle arms. This makes it possible to have changing porosity which makes the design visually interesting.

POROSITY STUDIESFIBERSThe porosity in the structure is important, to achieve differences in porosities in the design. One of the studies we made is the fiber layout on movable arms. The goal is to achieve differences in openings and density. The motion of the arms is extrapolated through this layer of moving fibers.

035HYPERBODY | NERVION | Digital Interactive Neural SystemCalcen Chan Kübra Yilmaz Leslie Che Marek Nosek

TRIANGULAR MESHWith this triangular mesh, we try to explore how we can further enhance the movement of each arms to allow even more possibilities. We also try to explore how we can make each arms be fully independent and self supporting. In essence, we upgraded the arms from 2D to a 3D model.

| HYPERBODYNERVION | Digital Interactive Neural SystemCalcen Chan Kübra Yilmaz Leslie Che Marek Nosek

036

SCISSOR STRUCTUREThe scissor structure is a spin-off of our 3D mesh research. With this method we try to find a lighter way to perform the complex movement in order to achieve the maximum flexibility that the 3D mesh is able to do. We first tried with just PVC pipes, but quickly realized the instability of the material. Aluminum rods replaced the PVC in the end to achieve more stability.

FINAL DESIGNExploded viewBelow is the exploded view of NERVION showing the individual pieces that make up the structure and the assembly order. Firstly, parts of [1], [2] and [3] will make up for the essential base and stability. Parts [4], [5], [6] are the secondary elements which completes the bottom half of NERVION. Secondly, inserting the rods [7] into [2] and applying the skin [8] will complete the top half of NERVION. The design is finished by attaching the Hyperloop [9] via strings.

FINAL DESIGNMaterialityThrough careful selection and multiple testing of various materials have led us to the use of the following: ECO-Boards, PVC pipes and TenCate sailcloth. Each material selected has its own story and background.

ECO-Boards PVC Pipes TenCate Sailcloth

The ECO-Boards is selected due to its interesting texture and the fact that it’s 100% made from recycled wood, very sustainable.

PVC pipes was largely available, cheap and it also offer the great flexibility we needed.

The TenCate sailcloth was the result of a long and desperate search for a lightweight, flexible and durable material.

LIPS: Living Interactive Playful SkinIn the 20th Century the (architectural) designs are customizable according to the needs and desire of the human being. What if the design has its own existence, own feelings and expressions? Own behaviors? The project aim is to invoke extreme experiences of visibility through spaces to entertain people. The main intervention of LIPS consists different behaviors and related spaces in order to lead the behavior of passerby. The shape is defined by the behavior of the organism itself. Regarding the structure, the organism is conceived as self sustaining and load-bearing. A three-dimensional system is used for this purpose: this makes it possible to make any flexible movement to express any behavior.

BEHAVIOR & MECHANIC RELATIONThe responses of L.I.P.S. are made possible by four Servos. Every single SERVO has its own input and required force to make the desired motion happen. On the image below the inputs are shown according to the behaviors.

The images show only one type of response separately to illustrate clearly what each action/movement does. Multiple movements can thus be combined to form different reaction of the system. For example, walking with hands spread wide and moving in a zigzag line towards the system.
