    NERVOUS SYSTEM

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM IS YOURBODY S CONTROL CENTER AND

    COMUNICATION NETWORK.

The Nervous System works with theEndocrine System to control how yourbody works and to help your bodyrespond to changes in its surrounding.

Messages picked up from inside andoutside of the body cause to nervoussystem to create signal (nervesimpulses) .

    These signals coordinate the bodys

thoughts, senses, movements, balanceand many automatic responses.

    Specialized cells, called neurons,

receive and send the signal. Neurons form most of the tissue of

    the nervous system.

    PARTS OF THE

NERVOUS SYSTEM BRAIN. The main control center for

    the body.

SPINAL CORD. Is the column ofnerve tissue that runs through theback bone

MANY NERVES. Are bundle of tissuethat carry signals from one place toanother.

    NERVOUS SYSTEM

The nervous system is divided intotwo main parts.

The brain and spinal cord make up the

CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. The nerves that connect the brainand spinal cord to others parts of thebody make up the

    PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM.

How do the parts of nervous

system work together? Some nerves of the PNS, gathermessages from inside and outside

the body and carry signals to theCNS.

The CNS interprets the incomingsignals. If a response is needed, theCNS send signal back to the musclesand the organ of the body throughother nerves of the PNS.

    DO NERVES GROW BACK

AFTER AN INJURY? Doctors once thought that injured

nerves could not heal or be repaired.

But recent studies now show thatsome nerve tissue can be repaired orcan heal to some degree.

Sensory and motor nerves can healcompletely, but the process is veryslow.

Spinal nerves have also show theability to grow, but they generally do

not grow well enough to repairsignificant damage.

This is why spinal cord injuries and

    the resulting paralysis are oftenpermanent

    WHAT DO THE PARTS OF

    THE BRAIN DO?

    13/19

The main control center of the body

Three major areas make up the brain

CEREBRUM. Center for thought, imagination, and emotions

Has two halves, and each half four

lobes that act as control centers fordifferent activities.

This activities include the control of

    Movement

    Create vision Hearing

    Taste

    Touch.

CEREBELLUM Control balance and posture It also smooths out movement that

requires fine coordination. BRAIN STEM. Part of the brain that

guides signals coming from the spinal

cord to others parts of the brain.

HOW DO REFLEXES WORK?A reflex is an involuntary response

that enables the body to react

immediately to a stimulus, such as apossible injury.

Some reflexes involve the brain, but

    many do not.

    18/19

Many reflexes, such as the reactionto intense pain, result from signals

that travel to the spinal cord throughone or more sensory nerves.

The signals move to the spinal cord

and then to a motor neuron. The motor neuron returns a signalthat causes you to pull away the

    source of the pain.
