Case Study – Integrated Approach (Fuji Xerox)

Dealers and Master Agencies deliver 44% of our equipment sales revenue.

Survey found mixed rates of product return and recycling activity.

Identified opportunity to increase recycling of end-of-life equipment.

One challenge is the environmentaland financial cost involved in transporting dealer equipment from remote sites to recycling facilities.

Future years will incorporate other aspects of sustainability performance.

What are the information needs?

Sustainability measurement & reporting

• Global Reporting Initiative

• UN Global Compact

• AccountAbility 1000 Framework (AA1000)

• Social Accountability 8000 standard (SA8000)

• GHG Protocol (WBCSD)

• OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises

• http://www.reportalert.info has a comprehensive repository of sustainability reports

Reporting Challenges

• GRI indicators are not always comparable

• GRI XBRL Taxonomy exists

• GRI indicators is the closest thing to Chart of Accounts in Sustainability

• Data is sourced from many parts of the organisation (HR, OH&S, Environmental, Financial) and in many forms (soft, hard, third parties)

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Page 13: net Balance presentation Queensland GreenIT Informatics Group

Measuring - Accepted Methodologies

• INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

• NATIONAL STANDARDS

Categorising Emissions - Scopes

14

The GHG Protocol defines three categories or ‘scopes’ for emissions:

Typical GHG of services industry

Emission Type Data Requirements Data Sources

Electricity Kilowatts Utilities invoices

Gas MegaJoules Utilities invoices

Fuel Consumption Litres Fuel invoices

Refrigerant Gas Kilograms Maintenance invoices

Taxis Estimated from Cost Receipts

Air Travel Origin/Dest/Psgrs Travel agent

Waste to Landfill Tonnes Waste Contractor

Paper Consumption Reams (A4 equiv.) Stationery purchases

Base Building Electricity

Kilowatts Landlord/PropertyManager

Data Centres Kilowatts IT Services Provider

GREEN IT AND INFORMATICS OPPORTUNITIES

Page 17: net Balance presentation Queensland GreenIT Informatics Group

Informatics Opportunities

• Core issues – Energy and waste

• Energy

– Information on consumption down to device level (what standards can be set?)

– Outsourced services – Provision of consumption data

– Innovations – Communications technologies to enable data transmission

• Waste

– Reduce, Reuse, Recycle concept

– Achieve other objectives beyond Green (eg. enable communication and information exchange among businesses looking to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes)
