confundir el ttulo. Aunque mirndola bien,

database as the title misleadingly implies.
And yet, upon closer examination, maybe it
is but in the sense of a fanzinisationa
in a Web 1.0 version ofwhat we now under st andas Database. It is a DB,
but it is also (and above
all) a map an ASCII

If the idea is to embark on a navigational
journey from the South, I can't help thinking
of Charl es Darwi n and hi s expl orat i ons ont he Beagle as he chart ed the cart ogr aphyof Tierra del Fuego, hitherto known only
as "Terra Incognita." The journey aboard
t he Beagle al l owed Darwi n to st udy t hegeol ogi cal proper t i es of cont i nents andislands as well as the multiple living
organisms and fossils he came across on the
expedition. This naturalist-draughtsman-
writer gradually accumulated a formidable
quantity of specimens formerly unknown to
science, which were later taken to the
British Museum after ve years aoat on the
southern seas. In his expedition journal
and specimen catalogue, he recorded details
and took notes on everything he observed,

which would later serve as the basis for his
Theory of Evolution.
Mackern, on the other hand, began hisexpedition in the cyber-seas of the south
with the intention of taking notes on the
(artistic?) productions being developed
there on the Internet. And in those turbulent
seas he certainly found a changing micro-
universe, a new continent devoid of beaches,
and discovered that he had a difcult task
to complete that of mapping the waters.
As I watch the scene, disturbed and shifting
uncomfortably on my sofa, I grab the remote,
hit the stop button and wonder: What's left
of that map? How many of those descriptionsproposed by the explorer still correspond
to living species? How many 404 pages or
cyber death certicates will we nd? Of
one thing I'm sure: though it still has
unquestionable "scientic" value, the true
val ue of t he shi p' s l og we see now l i es i nits "literary" worth, in the eye of the
sailor-surfer. After all, all research is
ction.
I take advantage of this pause to make
myself some coffee, and as I watch the water
starting to boil my thoughts turn again to
the ephemeral nature of net.art and to the
classic question: what should we keep?
How can the ephemeral be made to last? The
correspondiendo a especies vivas? Cuntas
pginas 404 o partidas cibernticas de
defuncin hallaremos?
bien an tiene indudable valor "cientco",
qu deberamos preservar?

record or the clothes?
The netart latino database can also be
vi ewed as a col l ecti on a col l ect i on oflinks, coordinates that teletransport us
to other virtual spaces but not to other
times. Unlike other reproducible media such
as lm, photography or video, the digital
medium makes no allowance for marking the
passage of time. Its colours don't fade,
it doesn't become blurry, its quality is
not diminished. The question in this case
is more radical: either it's here or it's
gone.
It would seem that all collections exist
for the sake of preserving the objects thatcomprise them from the ravages of time.
But rst we must take a step back and ask
ourselves: How can we preserve time itself?
Before we begin thinking of preservation as
a topic to be debated amongst conservators
and restorers, we must recall that it was
the artist who rst called attention to
this point; indeed, the act of freezing
a moment for posterity, transcending the
ephemeral, could be seen as the rst act of
conservation. There are countless examples
of the different ways in which this has been
attempted, such as portrait paintings or
photographic snapshots. Thus, the issue of
time was ultimately woven into the medium
itself, whether it be lm, video, kinetic
art, performance art, works-in-progress or
that which concerns us here, net.art. One of

the fundamental goals of art is to present
us with this paradox.
Preserving an instant also entails theability to preserve that which allows us
t o under st and i t s era and i t s cont ext , andthis leads us to another question which
could be phrased as follows: The record or
the clothes?
Conservati on, i n associ ati on wi t h col l ecti ng,often resembles a strange fetishism. In this
line of thought, let us imagine an auction
of Madonna's personal belongings. Two items
are brought out for auction: a master copy
of one of her LPs and the jacket she wore
in one of her lms. Which will we buy?Where is the music on the record or in
the jacket?
In short, what is it that we are collecting?
When we see, for example, the gallery
dedicated to Joseph Beuys in the Hamburger
Bahnhof, which looks like a cemetery where the
corpses of objects used in his performances
have been laid to rest, we wonder if we are
l osi ng si ght of the ori gi nal i ntenti on ofthe work or the artist if we are staring
at the nger rather than what it is pointing
at.
But this also poses another question: is
the bare "artwork" enough? What about the
setting in which it was presented? The
perception of the zeitgeist is the setting
fundamentales del arte es presentarnos esta
paradoja.
as: El disco o la ropa?
La conservacin, ligada al coleccionismo, se
nos presenta frecuentemente como un extrao
fetichismo. En esa lnea de pensamientos,
imaginemos una subasta de objetos de
Madonna.
Qu compraremos?
Dnde est la msica? En el vinilo o enla chaqueta?
En denitiva, qu es lo que coleccionamos?
Cuando vemos por ejemplo la sala del
Hamburger Bahnhof dedicada a Joseph Beuys,
Si no estaremos

that allows us to imagine how it would have
been at the moment of its creation. Does
the weight of meaning that we see in press
clippings, in the everyday objects of Dadacollages or in Fluxus works draw us closer
or distance us from the original creation?
When faced with a work by Nam June Paik, do
we choose the video or the television set?
Through what eyes wi l l we see t he al r eadyoutdated Netscape 1.0 logo and its basic
design twenty years from now?
One way of understanding net.art is to see
it as performances or actions in a public
space the virtual public space of the
Internet. Let us recall that net.art, at
l east i n the ear l y days, was chal l engedby many artists as something ephemeralthat could (and should, according to some)
disappear in milliseconds, like information
stored in the RAM memory when the electricity
goes out.
By way of exaggerati ng t he si t uat i on, l et' stake this comparison to the eld of theatre:
how can we preserve a theatrical piece? We
can imagine how a playwright would answer
this question. Filming the performance is
not enough; t he t ensi on exi st i ng al ongthe line that separates presentation from
representation (the fourth wall becomes
the camera lens) disappears, as does the
experience of real time and the feedback of
interaction with the audience. Some would
say it is preferable to preserve theatre in
Convertirlo
en texto para ser "re-presentado" por el
pblico o por otros artistas?

books. Could this be the solution for net.
art? Turn it into text to be "re-presented"
by the general public or by other artists?
Each work poses a different problem to the
conservator. Each work calls for a different
communication strategy. How one wants to
exhibit it, how one wants to reproduce it
(if at all), how one wants to relate to or
should interact with the audience. Before
making any decisions we could, in some
cases, ask the artist.
But we could also choose not to. And what
if we decided to act as DJs and remixed the
work? Or as playwrights and created a free
adaptation of the work? Particularly if we
(those of us who move in these circles)
realise that, unlike other technological
media, the greatest potential of the
digital medium is manipulation rather than
reproduction perpetual mutation rather
than invariance.
Continuing with the analogy of net.art
as performance art, should we focus on
safeguarding the script (by which I mean
its programming, the source code, its page
layout, its screens, etc.)? Or should we be
more interested in saving the score (the
instructions, the sheet music, the ow of
actions that give meaning to the piece)?
As far as the pieces are concerned, and
going back to Darwin which works should
Cada obra presenta un problema diferente
para el conservador. Cada obra propone una
estrategia diferente de comunicacin. Cmo
Darwin, qu obras conservar? Las ms
agresivas o las ms dbiles? Las obras que
utilizan tecnologa dependen de la evolucin

be preserved? The more aggressive ones
or the weaker ones? The works that use
t echnol ogy depend on the evol uti on of t he
devices on which they are stored. Thesevariations are the product of a kind of
technological determinism in which the
market dictates the survival of certain
media and the disappearance of others.
Art is sometimes a parallel universe where
other species survive, where specimens at
risk of extinction are defended and techno-
diversity is encouraged.
In this scenario, a work with a more complicated
setup and a wi de var i ety of t echnol ogi caldevices that are hard to maintain is less
likely to become a collector's item than
other simpler specimens with more easily
replaceable technology.
However, there is another factor to consider.
This factor is artistic determinism, in
which the artists-brands compete in the
art market ecosystem and some works attract
attention while others are easily forgotten.
Should we preserve the ones that survive
the struggle or the ones that won't?
Yet there is one question that stands out
above all the others, a question that points
to a nal horizon for all living organisms
on the Web. We could put it thus: How can
we expl ai n what t he I nter net was t o f utur egenerations?

Net.art works will face a problem far greater
than the future obsolescence of computers
and browsers the Web as we now know it will
no longer exist. The already outdated TCP/IP protocols and other structures that make
the Internet work will be replaced sooner
or later, making it impossible (for either
technical or nancial reasons) for data to
migrate from the old format to the new. It
is something irreversible; and whether they
appear in 10, 20 or 100 years, the networks
of the future will be radically different.
We are already moving from desktop computers
to mobile browsers and geo-locators. In the
same way, we will move from the current
network to another to which humans will be
able to connect along with machines, robots
and, in all likelihood, "works of art" as
well.
The di sappearance of t he I nt er net i sinevitable, and unfortunately it cannot be
replaced in the same way we replace our
video devices, moving from one format to
another. A Google page without the rest of
the sites that make up the Web is nothing
more than a series of empty instructions
a dead code, an ant without an anthill.
In the same way, net.art requires the pre-
existence of the net.
And in any case why do we need to preserve
them? What do artworks ask of us? They
demand our attention, and we might wonder
i f per haps the onl y reason they at t r act us
versin a otra.
mquinas, robots y, seguramente, tambin
conservarlas? Qu pretenden las obras de
arte de nosotros? Demandan nuestra atenciny podramos pregntanos si acaso no nos
atraen slo para que las conservemos. As

is to make us preserve them. We might also
wonder if ideas use man to ensure their own
reproduction. But why do works of art want
to be preserved? Is there something in themor in the imagination of society that made
the author decide to give them shape and
exhibit them, and later makes others want
to reproduce them?
Darwin would ask: And if this were so, what
would be the best tactic to guarantee their
survival? The most costly and scientic
practices of conservation and safekeeping,
in dark climate-controlled domes sheltered

Volvern a

All of this may not matter too much in a few
years; in the future, works may preserve
themselves and perhaps even gure out how
to reproduce on their own. And perhaps weshould focus more on controlling their
reproduction than on their conservation.
Will we build prisons for art? There are
countless prisons that have been converted
into museums. Will they revert to their former
use? Sooner or later, advances in robotics
will pose "social" problems that will need
to be legislated. We can already see the
rst signs of attempts to research the root
of the different protocols of communication
and languages among machines.
Speaking of robotic art, perhaps the time
will come when we must consider where we
should conne the works that break the law
or have behavioural problems. Will it be the
museums that once again open their doors to

On the TV I watch one country after another
ash by Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and
Mexico, or rather UY, PY, BR, MX, as well
as CL, PE, VE, CU. These abbreviations may
seem enigmatic to us, but they are no more
mysterious than using Tachycineta leucopygat o ref er t o a spar r ow, a pr acti ce t o whi chwe have already grown accustomed thanks to
Darwin and his colleagues.
I think about this and also about the
fact that the action of museums, unlike
that of an explorer, is more akin to the
action of a botanical garden than to that
of a nature reserve. A botanical garden
i s a col l ecti on of i ndi vi dual s sel ectedaccordi ng to curatori al cri t eri a where t heend result differs from the combinations of
species found in nature. But faced with this
situation, we could ask ourselves: Are the
works not interrelated? Don't they dialogue,

artworks or artists? Is it possible toisolate a work, take it out of context and
still preserve its original meaning? Should
we preserve individual specimens or the

Una premeditada coleccin o una fortuita
recoleccin?
Paraguay, Brasil, Mxico o mejor dicho UY,
PY, BR, MX y tambin CL, PE, VE, CU.
No dialogan,
generan alianzas o batallan contra otras
obras o artistas?
