Newsletter 13th

July 2018

Welcome to the final newsletter of this academic year. We would like to say a fond farewell to our Year 6

pupils as they move onto their secondary schools in September. They have made us so proud throughout the

year including their fantastic end of year performance ‘We Will Rock You’.

Years 3, 4 and 5 have been working incredibly hard completing their assessments and I look forward to seeing

them develop further as they move up through the school.

So many of our children work constantly to be the best that they can be, so it was very rewarding to see them

all having fun on their Golden Day today.

I would like to thank all the staff for providing the children with such great learning experiences. They are all

very hard-working and dedicated individuals and together they help to make NAJS such a good school. Thank

you also to the Governors for their support and to The Friends for all their fundraising efforts this year.

Finally, thank you to you and your children for entering into a partnership with us and hope you have a lovely

summer break.

Thank you.

Year 3 - Islamic Festival of Eid

What a fantastic time we had in Year 3 learning about Eid-el-Fitr and Ramadan! The children really enjoyed

learning about the festival and how it is celebrated across the world. They particularly loved getting their own

henna tattoo designs, which helped them feel part of the experience.

Sports News

Friday 18th

May - Year 5/6 Quad Kids Athletics Competition at The Hamble School

This year we were successful in taking two teams to the competition. Each team must be made up of four boys

and four girls and requires each athlete to compete in 4 events; javelin vortex throw, standing long jump, sprint

and 600m race.

The competition ran over 2 dates, with a total of 16 teams. In the team competitions our team 1 secured

5th

place and team 2 secured 14th

place. We had some exceptional achievements by individual athletes as well!

Grace in Year 6 individually ranked 1st

in the vortex throw and also as 1st

best girl overall, achieving UKA Gold

award! Ella also in Year 6 individually ranked joint first in the standing long jump with Wellsted, gaining UKA

Silver award. Milly in Year 5 achieved UKA Bronze award too!

For the boys, Ben in Year 5 threw an impressive throw at our event, ranking 3rd

best boy in the Vortex throw.

The team - Year 5: Milly, Mia, Harrison, Ollie, Ben, Dylan, Emilia, Alfie, Caleb, Charlie and Thomas.

Year 6: Sophie, Grace, Ella, Jess and Martha.

Wednesday 6th

June - PE Reward Trip

A reward trip was organised to show recognition to the children who have represented the school in PE and

sports events in numerous competitions this year. Thirty children were invited to go to Pizza Express and

Rock Up in Whiteley for a celebration of their commitment to the sports teams.

The children were a delight to take and they all had an amazing time!

Tuesday 26th

June - Lower School Handball Festival at Wildern School

There are unfortunately very few lower school competitions currently in the Cluster Diary but this one is a

great one! It encourages children to have a go at a new challenge and try a new sport.

At a festival, children receive some coaching and tips for playing before they enter into competitive games. We

played 3 matches and won all of them! A great triumph especially as we defeated some of the favourites.

We secured 5 points overall, which meant we came first in the whole event.

A superb achievement!

The team - Kaci, Archie, Joey, Magnus, Lily and Sienna.

Thursday 21st

June - Hampshire School Games 2018 at Aldershot Army Barracks

Again, this year Netley Abbey Junior made it to the Hampshire School Games to represent the

South Winchester & Eastleigh Cluster. This time we were going to play hockey!

The Upper School team was successful in the preliminary cluster event earlier in the year, where they came

second to Freegrounds School, Hedge End.

For all of the team this was their first time attending the games and the excitement continued throughout the

day.

The team successfully won their pool without a defeat, giving us full points into the next round. The next game

was against Amport and was extremely tight throughout but unfortunately went their way with a 1-0 win!

I am extremely proud to have been fortunate to watch the team play and grow through the tournament. They

were a credit to the school, regardless of the very long day and missing most of their Year 6 Disco due to

traffic!

We finished an impressive 7th out of 22 of the best schools in Hampshire!

The Team - Lucas, Shani, Amelia, Jessica, Ella, Grace, Laura and Ben.

P.E. Leader

Second Hand Uniform

For those children moving onto secondary school in September, we are happy to accept any second hand

school uniform, especially shirts/blouses which are useful for when children do painting in class to protect

their clothing. Good quality PE kits are also welcome.

Please hand any donations into the school office.

Thank you in advance.

Pupil Voice

This section is written by groups of children within our school and the following report is about Sports Day.

Sports Day - The Grand Opening

On Thursday 28th

June, Netley Abbey Junior School had an amazing start to the day. The parents were scanning

the field to find their children when suddenly; to their surprise some talented children started dancing. The

adults loved watching them try their best.

The Awesome Activities

After this amazing start to the day, the parents were eager to see more. Every time Miss Kenway, our PE

teacher, blew the whistle the children were gone, they had raced away doing whatever activity they were

supposed to be doing.

Staff Update

The end of a school year brings about inevitable changes in staffing and this year is no exception. I would like to

take this opportunity to thank our colleagues who are leaving us at the end of this term and would like to wish

them all the best for the future.

Miss Smith moves to Birmingham, Miss Warraich has promised to send some wedding photographs and we

hope she settles in to married life in Southend and Miss Broderick is looking forward to working with a

Reception class in Holland.

Miss Barwell is looking to gain a new challenge outside of school life and Mrs Parmiter has decided that now

her children are grown then it will be great to have term time holidays! She remains working locally for a

charitable organisation. Mrs Forest-Hill’s family are looking forward to her spending more time at home

following their move.

I would also like to welcome our new team members. Mrs Bundy has recently joined our admin team;

Miss Taylor joins us as Progress and Attainment Leader for Year 3 with Mr Oliver also joining Year 3.

Miss Whittlesea takes on Wykeham Class and also leads Year 6 as our Teaching and Learning Development

Leader. Mr Cull is our new Sports Coach and Mrs Hull and Miss Watts join our class based support staff.

Mrs Sawyer will join Mrs Osborne to lead the Lighthouse, our nurture group.

I am lucky to work with all of the staff at Netley Abbey Junior - the wealth of talent is immense!

Lower School Music Concerts

It has been a pleasure as always to hear the music showcased by lower school in our instrumental concerts this

year.

On Tuesday morning, Priory and Grange performed a range of rhythms on the samba drums, working well to

improvise and showcase a range of call and response rhythms within their performance.

Then on Thursday morning we heard from Denzil and Castle as they performed some fantastic pieces on the

descant recorder. It was exciting to see so many children attempting the treble recorder this term too.

Finally, on Thursday afternoon Seaview and Westwood performed with Mrs Barnett on the keyboards, showing

their hard work from the summer term.

I would like to congratulate all children on their efforts in their music lessons and concerts this term. It has

been rewarding as always to hear the results of your learning.

See you in the autumn term for our music and Christmas concerts!
